1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

Sassarine with the broken Teraknian Bridge in the foreground. Note that the city has some decent hills in amongst the canals. That is the Noble District on the cliffs to the left, and Castle Teraknian just visible inside the harbour left of center.

THE SAVAGE TIDE ADVENTURE PATH
Module One: There is No Honor... (Dungeon #139)
Chapter One: A Noble in Need

Another day dawns on the city of Sasserine, the pearl of the jungle coast. People wake up and start their morning routines; in the markets fisherman and bakers start unpacking their wares, servants come down to the waterfront to throw the contents of the night's bedpans into the canals and lagoons, then pick out the supplies for the morning's breakfast.

OOC: You can post how your character wakes up and gets to the Vanderboren mansion in the merchant's District. This is optional, just for a bit of colour.

Re: 1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

As the dawn sun speared through his window and the fish-hawkers started selling their wares in earnest, Logan yawned and stretched, immediately noticing the smells of Shadowshore.  Are they particularly bad today, or is it that I've spent so much time elsewhere?  Shelving the thoughts for now, Logan removed himself from bed and threw on whatever relatively clean garments he could find.  He ventured into the common room of their flat, where his mother had once again fallen asleep staring out the window.  Logan worried for Tessara, and hoped that a change of scenery would do her good.  He couldn't imagine spending all day staring at the place where his father had died.  He had tried to get her to leave the house, but something had broken in her the same time that his father had been killed.  Shaking his head, Logan left the flat, traveling a few blocks to buy some cheap honeyed biscuits (which were still a relative luxury to the recently-penniless rogue), and returned back to his squalid apartment.  He ate his with gusto, and then, feeling cooped up, left the other for his mother.  Picking through his room for the best clothes he could find, Logan strapped on his shiny rapier and left the apartment.  His mother was still resting, and he fully expected that when he returned, she'd be stuck to the same spot, either asleep or silently staring where that cart and the terrible accident had taken Theodric away from them.  "Bye, mom," the half-elf whispered, hoping yet knowing he wouldn't get a response.

Logan rambled through the city, up to the Merchant's district, making his way to the front door just as the clock-tower in the main square was sounding its eighth chime.  Taking a deep breath, Logan knocked on the door.

"Rowyn Kellani my ipo ahi," he muttered to himself, smiling. Alohan had just turned onto Rubble Street deep in the now wakening Shdaowshore. The downtrodden district looked to still suffer from its own hangover of nefarious dealings and binge drinking and the native moved along unmolested to his temporary home. Back to his loyal Remmi, a clean loin cloth & vest, and then quickly off once more. Last night had been the most fun he has had since leaving his isles and it was only natural Remmi wasn't there to take part. He felt guilty but Alohan never asked him to leave. He was gone by the time he returned from the Mermaid's Secret. What was a native to do!

"Morning hoalhoa!" he hollered, forcing himself inside. He hadn't much time for anything but grabbing new pairs of clothes. He still needed to take a swim and wash the grime off!

Re: 1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

Celene had not been drinking exhessively, and had retired early enough to the temple grounds, but was still groggy when the morning chimes awakened her. Her dreams had been plagued by scenes of shambling corpses tearing apart everyone around her, and everyone she had cared about. Throngs of strangers closing in around her, murmuring and pointing at her. Her companions standing securely around her but suddenly changing faces into that of the young relative of the plantation owner, who had barred her escape from the fiery death trap. Yet behind all these scenes, a menacing dread loomed, a vague green figure issuing a rumbling growl.

The only thing that could save her lay deep within herself, hidden and unknown. Try as she might, she could not reach it. And while she fought within, the enemies encroached.

The chimes had saved her dream-self, but the thoughts lingered. Rising to do her morning chores, and getting ready for the day, Celene pondered what it meant. What was that blurred threat? And what was it within her that she could not reach? What could she do to reach it?

The chimes again woke her from her thought. Having finished her tasks, she was ready to leave. Walking the short way to the noble mansion, Celene pulled the bell string.

"Goodmorning Sire!" says the young man in an unusually chipper tone. "I assume you also had a pleasant evening last night? I, myself, made the most amazing discovery. There is a delightfully establishment not two blocks from here called The Velvet Hatch which has the most wonderfully friendly women. We should go there - after I have assisted with your morning toilet of course Sire."

Logan:
Logan rambled through the city, up to the Merchant's district, making his way to the front door just as the clock-tower in the main square was sounding its eighth chime.  Taking a deep breath, Logan knocked on the door.

Vanderboren Manor is located in the eastern section of the Merchant District and is an impressive three storied mansion surrounded by a seven foot wall. The front gates are wide open, so Logan walks straight through the estate's garden and up to the towering, gothic house that dominates the grounds within. Leering gargoyles and capering nymphs festoon the eaves of the manor’s roof, and several trees give the manor grounds a nice buffer from the bustle of the city.

After a few moments the door is answered, but not by who Logan was expecting.

OOC: Running in NPC mode

"Good morning,"
says Kassius as he stands in the open door, with an ironic grin on his face. "Don't worry, I am not branching out into a new line of work! Lady Vanderboren is currently occupied with other guests and I was told to wait here in the atrium." The half-orc hunter allows the rogue to come in, then closes the down behind them before continuing the explanation.

"The Halfling servant - I think her name was Kora -  said that she would be finished shortly and then disappeared off to help. It appears that Lady Vanderboren is a little short on servants at the moment." Logan hears a whine from behind him, and sees Logan's animal companion lying on his stomach along a wall in the atrium. The room is tall - the ceiling arches 30" above - and a set of ornately carved and polished staircases lead up to a mezzanine floor on either side. A hallway runs between the staircases and leads to two sets of double doors at the far end. Beneath the mezzanine floor the ceiling is 15" high.

Vanderboren Manner

OOC: I had to bring Kassius and Kibeti along. They are too cool to give up on yet.

Celene:
The chimes again woke her from her thought. Having finished her tasks, she was ready to leave. Walking the short way to the noble mansion, Celene pulled the bell string.

Kassius raises and eyebrow. "It appears that my services are needed again. Perhaps her ladyship is merely short of a doorman and that is the secret mission she has called us in to help with?"

Kibeti yawns in agreement, and shows off a ridge of powerful teeth. Logan hadn't noticed before, but there was something weird about the cat now he was up close and seeing it in the light of day. The powerful animal's proportions are wrong and it has what appears to be an extra row of teeth behind the first set, not to mention some strange looking bulges set behind its front shoulder blades. The cat seemed to notice him looking, and opened its mouth and pulled back its lips - almost as though it was smiling at him.

Kassius opens the door and finds the young novice that Logan had been spending so much time with on the front door step. "Good morning Miss Celene," says the hunter politely. "Won't you please come in and join us?"

Angati's rest of the night was completely uneventful, and she retired quietly after a dropping quiet goodbyes to her companions.

Comming back to the shrine felt a bit of a chore in itself, and she really looked forward to the next morning. She would be expected to be doing things in the shrine, but there was really no obligation, although most of the time it was just done. Anyway, decissions might come that way in the near future, but for the time being she could just procastrinate that.

She arrived at the Vanderboren's and was happy to see everyone in the waiting room.

"Good day everyone, I trust the night went on fine for everyone ?... as for me, it was a bit depressing, but nothing that one could not get over with just a bit of sleep". It have been her first wedding ever and she had had much higher hopes and expectations.

OOC: Oh poor poor Remmi...

Remmi obeyed with a happy grin on his face. Soon they would be back in the Pearl Islands with a multitude of servants to take care of the young prince again - including the 'Royal Wipers' whose job it was to do this particular task.

The clocks in the city start striking eight. "Your eminence, what time are you meant to be at your... 'job'... this morning?"

OOC: Will his young highness be condescending to join the rest of the group at some point? :P

Re: 1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

Logan nods to Kassius.  "Huh, yes.  It seems a great many nobles are short of servants.  Or at least several I've run into in the past week.  Of course, that's not always a bad thing, depending on what you want..."  Logan trails off, the sights of the mansion registering with him after the surprise at seeing Kassius.  The rogue couldn't believe he was allowed to come into such a place.  His fingers involuntarily clenched, and it took an effort of will to stop mentally calculating the value of every object he could see.  Tessara would be aghast if he managed to save them from Shadowshore from pilfering everyone not tied down here.  No, he had learned better...

Logan's internal monologue trailed off again as he found himself studying Kassius's cat, and he cocked his head at the animal.  Does it know what I'm thinking or...  Logan shook his head again as the door chimed, and Kassius opened it to reveal Celene.  A smile replaced Logan's look of pensive worry.  "Good morning!  I wonder what the Lady Vanderboren has planned for all of us?  It must be something rather unique to gather all of us here.  I gather from last night that Alohan and Angati are also on their way?"  Logan shook his head again.  "You know, as much trouble as it is to live in Shadowshore, I think it's even more trouble to be rich.  At least they seem to have much more complicated problems.  First the, er, business we had together, then the wedding and the dopplegangers..."  Logan looked at the stairs, as if expecting their hostess to appear.  "I'm actually a little excited to see what new problems the nobility of Sasserine have found!"

At the eight chime, the native concluded he'd have to work up a sweat to make it in time. Alohan grabbed the handle, turning to Remmi before departing. "I appreciate you hoaaloha," he stated meeting his friend's eye. A moment between friends, a moment past, and Alohan was out the door.

The native cantered through Sasserine at a steady pace, looking to make the Vanderboren estate before everyone broke their fast. He was hungry and although he'd be fashionably late and Alohan had hoped he'd make it in time to meet Lavinia. Soon enough, Alohan found himself in the Merchant District deciding it was no longer proper to be running. He ceased his gallop and turned to look for the Vanderboren estate.

"Good mornin'" he said cheerily, in-between deep breaths. He waved at his companions and invited himself inside the estate.

Re: 1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

OOC: I know we are all suffering from NPC saturation, but these are the last four I promise!

The parties friendly good-mornings are interrupted by the double doors at the far end of the room (the ones circled in red) opening. Three figures stride through the doors, talking and laughing loudly - they also have some sort of animal with them.

The first is a young male half-elf with blonde hair, dressed in leather armor and armed with a dozen daggers of different shapes held in shealths all over his body. He is also twirling a dagger in one hand while spinning a round object in the other - it becomes clear that this second object is... a wheel of cheese.

The half-elf is talking in a jaunty tone to a dark-skinned dwarf dressed in green and brown robes. The dwarf absent mindedly strokes the neck of a huge furry animal that is waddling on all fours beside him - the animal has black fur on its body mixed with white furry streaks on its head, but it is so obese that it is difficult to identify exactly what type of animal it is. The dwarf breaks out into a loud laugh. "Well at least we got breakfast!" he exclaims.

A beautiful dark-haired woman walks just behind the two men, holding a hand on each of their shoulders. She is an attractive lady, dressed in green robes covered in many bracelets and necklaces, and has a tattoo of a crescent moon on one check. Her attractiveness is somewhat marred by her haughty demeanor - when she speaks her tone is arrogant and condescending. "I think Tolin is hoping to get more than a little breakfast!" she says with a mocking laugh.

With that a fourth figure stumbles in through the doors, followed by the old halfling lady they all met the night before. Kora Whistlegap is physically pushing a handsome bearded man in out through the doors with an angry look on her face. "It was just a business proposition!" he smirks, much to the amusement of the other three people in his party who begin laughing heartily.

The four of them continue down the corridor until they reach the party. Each of them splits off and talks to one of the characters.

OOC: Except Angati because... she's old. But feel free to speak up in defence of any of the others.

Logan turns his pack from the newcomer and tries to inconspicuously checks that his belongings are still safe with him, even laying a reassuring hand on his new (to him) rapier.  Finally, he turns to glare at the other half-elf.  "Wrong side of the canal," the Shadowshore rogue says in a condescending voice.  "Yes, you've surely grown up a hard life, with the whalers running rampant and the occasional exotic animal getting loose from traders."  Logan sniffs.  "But let me tell you what things are like in Shadowshore.  You ever seen a man killed before you, simply because he was in the way?  Your own father crushed to death beneath a cart, and no one caring?"  Logan makes a quick motion with his hand, intending to try Zan's trick against him, but fails.  "Well, I guess you learned a few things, even if Keltar's kept you lot safer than Dractus has kept us."  Logan glares at the others, clearly not liking the new additions to the room.

Alohan frowned more at being called the group's leader than Tolin's poor attempt at an insult. Was that how others viewed him? He sure the hell hoped not -he left Nuari to escape the pressures of leadership. He hated how the position continued to plague him.

With a delayed smile and a polite courtesy, Alohan returned the greeting. "It be a pleasure meetin' ya Tolin... and de Jade Ravens!" he began, hoping the others noticed him not indulging in their petty squabbles. "I be sure de jungle coast be better for having ya. And I assure ya Tolin, leadership is not in what ya be wearing. It be in how you treat others." He let the accusation hang, hoping their piss poor attitudes went elsewhere.

The native remained silent during Logan's rebuff, feeling the anger swell in the boy. He tried to meet his eye, hoping he'd keep a level head around those looking for any excuse to make a fool out of them. None-the-less, Logan was right. Shadowshore wasn't like anything he had ever experienced. It took a tough soul to be born and raised in such squalor.

"I am delighted to meet you, Liame, my name is Celene." Feeling slightly sorry for the woman, who apparently needed to work on her self-esteem, Celene had no mercy for bullying behaviour. "Oh, I could never hope to replace you, that's not at all within my competences, you're quite right. And I would never feel comfortable doing it for money, surely. I am sure that takes your kind of... girl."

Not sure how quick the woman in fact was, Celene continued while letting the meaning of the retort sink in. Trying to let it go there, as if saying "are we even now?", she quickly moved on to more casual chatter, albeit with a true curiosity. "Am I mistaken, or are you native to some of the Northern countries? Perhaps even the empire? I have only heard few - but fascinating - stories of the fabled empire."

Angati saw no need of using her sharp tongue on Jade Ravens, her companions were doing pretty well themselves.... there was however a question, that needed to be asked, and the moment to do so was just perfect to cut everything short and hopefully turn the Jade Raven's bitterness elsewhere...

She smiled coldly as she approached Kora, and speaking loud enough to be heard by everyone she asked "So... Kora, what is the point of this coincidence ?, has it been staged to mock the Jade Ravens? That is unnecessary and bad practice...  or maybe you were actually planning on humbling us to get better pricing ?... if anything, we do not approve of seeing other adventurers that we admire treated so!!".

She paused for a second before continuing "There was no need for this meeting and I trust you have very good reasons for it, so I beg you explain to us without dwelling on this fruitless exchange any longer".

OOC: I do not like rolling my social / perception rolls myself... it feels like imposing something, so just feel free to roll or let me know when I need rolling please. Otherwise just let me know if you prefer the imposing part :)

A look of horror appears on Kaskus' face and he steps back to cover Baxtor's ears with his hands. "It's not his fault! It's glandular!" he says abruptly.

Logan turns his pack from the newcomer and tries to inconspicuously checks that his belongings are still safe with him, even laying a reassuring hand on his new (to him) rapier.

OOC: Everything is in order. You should really get Celene to cast detect magic on it some time you know...

Logan:

"Woah man! Take it easy!" says the half-elf as he takes a step back and puts his hands up with palms facing outwards. "You shadowshore guys always take things so seriously. Look, keep the cheese okay!" he says, and steps back again until he is bunched with his friends.

Re: 1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

Celene:
"I am delighted to meet you, Liame, my name is Celene." Feeling slightly sorry for the woman, who apparently needed to work on her self-esteem, Celene had no mercy for bullying behaviour. "Oh, I could never hope to replace you, that's not at all within my competences, you're quite right. And I would never feel comfortable doing it for money, surely. I am sure that takes your kind of... girl."

"Ha!" laughs the woman haughtily, and she tosses her dark hair back over her shoulder. "Well, you'll learn if you continue on in this line of work. If you live long enough that is..."

Celene:
Not sure how quick the woman in fact was, Celene continued while letting the meaning of the retort sink in. Trying to let it go there, as if saying "are we even now?", she quickly moved on to more casual chatter, albeit with a true curiosity. "Am I mistaken, or are you native to some of the Northern countries? Perhaps even the empire? I have only heard few - but fascinating - stories of the fabled empire."

"The Empire of Thyatia? Trust me it isn't that great... or fascinating. I come from Traladara, or the Grand Duchy of Karameikos as it is styled now. But one day we will be free again. I hear that Sasserine was under the Thyatian boot for about one hundred years, and Traladara is coming up to that same anniversary. When the time comes, I will return and help my country fight for its freedom, but until then... this work suits me well enough."

Alohan Nuari:
"It be a pleasure meetin' ya Tolin... and de Jade Ravens!" he began, hoping the others noticed him not indulging in their petty squabbles. "I be sure de jungle coast be better for having ya. And I assure ya Tolin, leadership is not in what ya be wearing. It be in how you treat others."

"What? Oh, yeah, yeah! I know that!" replies Tolin, quickly taking his hands off his extremely bright breast plate.

Angati:
She smiled coldly as she approached Kora, and speaking loud enough to be heard by everyone she asked "So... Kora, what is the point of this coincidence ?, has it been staged to mock the Jade Ravens? That is unnecessary and bad practice...  or maybe you were actually planning on humbling us to get better pricing ?... if anything, we do not approve of seeing other adventurers that we admire treated so!!".

"Oh no!" says Kora. "It isn't like that, I promise Madam Lidu!"

"Madam Lidu, eh?" says Tolin, apparently noticing her for the first time. "Well, Madam. It is good to hear that you have heard of our exploits, although I must say that I am surprised to see a lady of your breeding and... seniority mixing with this rabble."

He clicks his fingers as though figuring something out. "Are you their book-keeper?! Keeping track of the team's accounts is one of the many jobs of being the leader..." he glances back at Alohan as he says this, ".. and one I do not enjoy at all. Maybe we should hire you? <chuckle> After all, not much accountancy is required here. Zero plus zero equals zero!" He laughs at his joke and Kora gives him a withering look.

"Come on Jade Ravens! Let's move out!" he says while making a vaguely military signal with one hand. The other three follow him out of the mansion along with the gigantic badger; Kaskus and Liamae are chatting happily to each other, but Zan keeps glancing over his shoulder at Logan as he walks out.

Once the Jade Ravens are out the door...

Angati:
"There was no need for that meeting and I trust you have very good reasons for it, so I beg you explain to us without dwelling on this fruitless exchange any longer".

"Oh, I am so sorry Madam Lidu!" says the little Halfling lady as she wrings her hands repeatedly. "The Jade Ravens have been in the employ of the Vanderboren family for many years, but recently it has not been possible to keep them on retainer due to... some financial issue which Lady Vanderboren will be so happy to explain to you. M'lady thought that if she invited the Jade Ravens for breakfast and was then able to introduce your two teams, they would understand that the mission would be a success and payment would not be an issue. They were invited a little earlier than you so this could be explained, but..." Kora hangs her head. "...but they were not open to negotiation. They left as soon as they had finished breakfast." It looks as though the old lady is on the verge of crying.

"Please, please Madam Lidu, Master Alohan, Master Logan, Miss Celene. Please come this way and all will be explained."

Angati:
OOC: I do not like rolling my social / perception rolls myself... it feels like imposing something, so just feel free to roll or let me know when I need rolling please. Otherwise just let me know if you prefer the imposing part :)

OOC: Agreed. What is the point in making a perception roll to see if an NPC is trying to deceive you, if you know the result of the roll yourself.

Secret roll made. Kora Whistlegap appears to be genuinely upset, and is apparently being honest with you. No roll needed for social intimidation. She is already pretty intimidated.

Re: 1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

Kora leads the party through the atrium and under the mezzanine floor. As they pass by the staircases on either side, they see that the next space is filled with a jumble of objects stuffed just out of sight from the main door. Logan automatically tries to calculate the value of what he is seeing but it proves impossible – the collection is what might be called ‘eccentric’ if one were being kind, or otherwise just ‘strange junk’. Before he loses track, the thief spots large pieces of furniture made out of rare tropical woods, strange native masks, primitive weapons ranging from flint tipped spears to bola and boomerangs, stone idols, woven mats… the most impressive objects are the large stuffed animals. All are all various types of strange lizards of different sizes, but all with jaws filled with razor sharp teeth.

OOC: Map will be posted this evening.

Through the double doors at the end of the room they enter into a small garden surrounded on all four sides by the house. The mansion was built into the side of a hill, so the garden slopes downwards from south to north. At one end a fountain sends a small jet of water bubbling up into the air, which feeds a small stream which flows down to the southern end of the building and disappears through an iron grill into a basement level.

The old Halfling leads them through the small park down a bark path. Palm trees and tropical ferns crowd either side of the path and threaten to overwhelm it – it looks as though the plants have not been cut back for some time. They cross a little wooden bridge and reach some doors into the building on the other side. Kora enters without knocking. The room they come into is a small private dining room with a large wooden table sitting in the middle, and the remains of a breakfast sit upon the table. The room is comfortable and cozy, rather than the typical ostentatiousness of a Sasserine noble’s house, and has a thick, soft carpet and large family portraits hung around on the walls.

[Private to Celene: One portrait immediately catches Celene’s eye. Directly ahead of her, the sorceress sees a large painting of a handsome young man with a short beard. He is quite some years older, but she recognizes him. He is definitely the young, dark haired man she saw in her dream… the one who was there on the night of the fire!

OOC: Picture will be posted this evening.
]

On the other side of the room stands a young lady in her early twenties dressed in a long flowing blue dress, and with her hands clasped in front of her. She smiles as the party enters.

“My goodness! I can recognize you all from the wonderful descriptions that Kora gave me of you. It is fantastic to meet all of you. Please, take a seat and enjoy some breakfast while we talk. Oh…” The young lady looks at the table, and seems to notice how much of the food is gone. And even the food that is not gone is not in good shape. Each of the remaining bread buns have had exactly one bite taken out of them, the croissants have all been roughly cut open and thrown around and many of the fruit dropped on the floor. The only things that haven’t been disturbed are the many folded napkins spread around the table. These have been manipulated into a wild variety of shapes, most of them cleverly representing some sort of exotic monster. Dragons, goblins, trolls… even a brave attempt at a paper napkin beholder. These are interspaced with a large number of the same type of flower – it is a flower that is not immediately familiar to anyone in the party.

“My goodness. The Jade Ravens ate a lot more than I thought they would. I am so sorry. But please at least have some cheese and crackers, I know there was an unopened wheel of cheese… Oh! That has disappeared, how strange! And the chocolate cookies… I baked them myself… they’re all gone?! My goodness!”

“Perhaps m’lady,” interjects Kora. “Introductions first?”

“Yes, of course Kora, thank you,” the young lady straightens a little. “I am Lavinia Vanderboren. Well, Lady Vanderboren I suppose now. But please, just call me Lavinia! And see if you can find a little breakfast at least.”

Celene is visibly paler than usual, but seems tear her eyes from the room around them, to snap back out of whatever brooding thoughts she was in. "Lady Vanderboren... Lavinia, it is most kind of you to think of breakfast for us, but I have been up early at the temple, and had my share earlier, so I am quite full." Celene happily takes a seat, though. "I am Celene, even though I understand you already know that, and it is equally pleasant to meet you. Yet, you have the advantage of knowing about us. May I request to know a bit about you? My knowledge of people around this city has been shown these last days to be quite lacking."

Lavinia nods. "Certainly. I am the oldest child of Verik and Larissa Vanderboren. My parents sadly died a month ago in  a tragic accident, leaving me in charge of the family businesses and estates. I fear that I have not been that successful in taking over from my esteemed father… and as for my younger brother Vanthus..." Lavinia nods up at a large portrait of a scowling young man behind her. "…he has not been any help at all. By the time I had managed to overcome my grief and try and set things in order, the family finances were as much a mess as this breakfast..."

Angati:

"Greetings Madam Lidu. Ahh yes, the Jade Ravens. My family has paid them a monthly stipend for years just so they would be on available when demanded - often they were paid for doing absolutely nothing. But now that I am two months behind in paying them, so they are refusing to work. It is a shame, because they are a very competent group, even if their manners are poor. Tolin, that's their leader, propositioned another method of payment but..." Lavinia's cheeks colour. "...it was not appealing to me."

"A pot of tea sounds like an excellent idea! Kora, would you be so kind?"

The old Halfling lady nods, and heads through a door in the north wall.

"It was a good idea to send her out anyway," whispers Lavinia. "Looking at this ruined breakfast was making her sad, I could tell. She was up half the night making it, and even I was up early to do the napkins... And it is also best not air family 'dirty laundry' in front of the servants... Yes, dear cousin Amarilde. She is a big worry to me, but we can only hope that marriage will calm her down a bit. I hear that they call he 'All the way Amy' down in the Azure district. <tsk tsk> I am surprised that she was able to tell you anything in between drinking. But before I begin telling you about the task and why I thought of you all, please make yourselves comfortable." She motions to Logan, Alohan and Kassius.

"Perhaps a bowl of milk for the cat?" she suggests to the hunter.

As he surveys the wreckage of breakfast, Logan scowls.  His initial distaste for the Jade Ravens grows even deeper, and he shakes his head sadly as he surveys the mass of food that would provide for dozens of starving Shadowshore inhabitants.  Feeling somewhat guilty at the wasted plenty in front of him, Logan sidles up to the table and surreptitiously takes one of the bread buns.  He nibbles most it, discarding the barest sliver of the already-eaten piece under a paper wyvern.

He fishes around his pack, and produces a wheel of cheese.  "Is this what you're trying to find?  Zan was trying to exchange this with my thieve's tools...er, that is..."  Logan blushes, awkwardly scrambling for a word.  "Er, my tools for unsticking locks.  Anyway..."  Logan trails off and deposits the cheese on the table as well, fussing with it until it arranged nicely on one of the plates, then takes the seat offered by Lavinia.

"If the Jade Dragons have grown too fat and spoiled by your largess, we're more than happy to step in."  The rogue looks at the others, expecting their response.

Catching Logans words, Celene quickly chips in, "Oh, I think you mean Jade Ravens, don't you Logan? The Lotus Dragons are another lot we've heard of, and from what we heard, they quite a bit worse, even. I think we're especially on the lookout for any signs of them. In fact, I believe we were told your brother Vanthus, whom you just mentioned, is connected with them. But of course, it's just hearsay."

[Private to GM: It was Vanthus on the picture you pointed out earlier, right?]

"He doesn't stay here, then? I mean, in your manor? You live here with only Kora? It's an impressive manor, but then again, I've hardly seen a noble mansion before, from the inside I mean."

Re: 1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

The native grins at Logan's quip as he follows the group into the private dinning and to an available seat. He absently picked up a bowl of java plums that have been discarded upon the floor, blowing off whatever foreign matter clung to it's skin before tossing the bite sized melons into his mouth. "Unlike me friends, I be not eatin' dis mornin'," he grumbles under his breath. He continues to eat as Celene asks her questions -a curious looking croissant followed by macadamia nuts scattered all about the dinning room table. The pitcher of water had something precarious floating in it so the native poured himself a glass of pear cider hoping that the alcohol would dull whatever the Jade Ravens used to spoil the beverage.

During this time of indulgence, Alohan hadn't actually been following the conversation. In fact, when he actually paused to look at Lavinia, he had actually noticed how beautiful she was. 'Oh my,' his heart told his head. While Amarilde was surely good for the eyes, Lavinia was something Alohan needed. As quickly as Rowyn entered his life, Lavinia had stumbled in.

Re: 1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

Now that the entire party is seated around the table, Lavinia also sits down and begins her story.

"As I mentioned, I inherited my parents' estate about a month ago. Along with this fine house and a plantation, came a fine amount of debt owed to the Dawn Council, the harbourmaster, and quite a few guildhalls. It seems like my parents, for all of their success as adventurers, were not as skilled in finance as one might expect. If I’m to get these taxes paid, I’ll need to access my family’s vault under Castle Teraknian where they kept the treasure from their adventures."

"Oh Kora, the tea! Thank you. Please start with Madam Lidu, anybody else for a cup?" Lavinia starts fidgeting with a paper napkin as she speaks, folding and unfolding it countless times.

"So, my goodness, where was I? Oh, so that’s the problem, you see. The vaults are magically locked—keyed to special signet rings. Both of my parents had one of these rings, at least, until recently. My mother lost hers a few months ago. She arranged for a replacement, but it won’t be done for another month or so, too late for me. Which leaves my father’s ring. He never wore it — he had a thing about men wearing jewelry. He kept it hidden somewhere on his ship, the Blue Nixie. The problem there is that the harbormaster’s seized the ship until someone pays for the last four months of mooring. I’ve paid the fines to the man the harbormaster’s put in charge of my ship, I think you have heard of him... he is a brute named SOLLER VARK."

Lavinia starts folding her napkin with more purpose, making it into a shape.

"So after I paid, I went to claim my ship but Vark’s men wouldn’t let me board, claiming that I hadn’t yet paid the fines. I spoke to Vark again, but he just laughed and denied ever receiving my payment. My complaints to the harbourmaster, have fallen on deaf ears — Keltar Islaran is a doddering old fool and deathly ill to boot. He says he trusts his men, and won't help. I think he knows death is close and just can't be bothered."

"Vark and his men are up to something on my ship, I know it. What I need is to find out exactly what they’re up to. Unfortunately, Vark’s not the type to react well to diplomacy or logic. I need people who... speak his language. Which is where you come in. After my SECOND COUSIN told me of your successes against Vark yesterday morning, I though you would be the right people to tackle him. If you can find out what he’s using my ship for, or even better, recover the money I paid him and get my ship back, I’ll pay each of you... two hundred gold. Would that be acceptable?"

Lavinia pauses, and places the folded napkin on the table. It is the same strange flower as half the napkins on the table. "Of course I can't give you anything right now. And you'll have to help me access the family vault so I can recover our family reserves after you're finished on the boat."

Two hundred gold.  Two.  HUNDRED. GOLD.  Logan said the number to himself a few times in his head.  How much money did this woman's family have?  The rogue looked to the others, to see how they were handling the information.  He calmly stood up and walked over to the table, cutting himself a piece of cheese and a cracker, using the time to steady his thoughts before he tried to speak.  But his thoughts kept echoing: Two Hundred Gold.  Finally, Logan had himself under what he thought was good control, and cleared his throat as he regained his seat.

"That's a terrible story.  We've all had run-ins with Vark in the past.  Come to think of it, he was actually involved with stealing Amarilde's dress."  Logan shakes his head, suddenly distracted from thoughts of the possible gold reward.  "That can't be a coincidence, can it?  Does Vark have some kind of grudge against your family?  Or Keltar?  Because I can't imagine Vark actually thinking of something like this on his own.  It's too..."  Logan waved his hands in the air, "Too...intellectual for him.  He's more of the smash and grab type thug, like the business with Bronson and the wedding dress.  Someone else must be behind this.  Who else knows about the ring and the vaults, Lavinia?"  Logan blushed, remembering he was addressing nobility.  "Er, Lady Vanderboren.

He paused again, then added: "I'd be glad to help, of course.  If nothing else, just to knock Vark down another peg.  I just want to make sure that we're covering our bases, and not walking into a bigger mess than we started with."

Alohan nods along with Logan, never taking his eye off Lavinia. Another damsel in distress needing his particular skillset -how convenient. The prospect of him needing to harm someone over a silly ring didn't quite sit well with him but another run in with the criminal Vark could potentially make it worth while. Furthermore, it gave Alohan the chance to mingle with the seedy underbelly of Sasserine, something he might be able to take advantage of in the long run.

"Dis...  Keltar Islaran" he began, carefully enunciating Keltar's name. "He be at de wedding, no? Coughin' his innards out all of de night. If I be rememberin', Logan be chattin' wit him. What kind of a man is dis Keltar. Type of man to be havin' such criminals in his employ?" The question was more for Logan than Lavinia. If Keltar was some form of criminal harbor boss, Alohan would like to know.

Celene sits thinking about the story and the responses for a moment, before speaking up. "Logan, you are on to something, but I think you were not present at one more piece of information that came our way. As you and Alohan were after that Vark Fellow, this girl, a side-kicks of Varks, overstepped hear bounds, as Angati persuaded her to speak of things she should not. She was rather talkative, in fact. And what she said and implied was that Vark was in fact in the employ of your Brother, Lavinia! Her words were along the lines of 'Soller and I have our own ship now', clearly meaning some large, ship. But then she followed that they 'just need to do one more load for the Lotus Dragons and then...', at which point she suddenly broke off, and blurted 'Oh frak - Vanthus said he would kill us if we said anything.', before making a surprising exit into the harbour Water. Yes, sorry about the cursing, but those were her words. I think, Lavinia, that it may be time to face up that your brother is no longer the innocent child you probably played happily with when you were younger."

OOC. Just jumping in to give Lavinia's opinion of him. Logan should feel free to answer as well.

"I don't think he is a bad man," says Lavinia. "Just too old and sick to do the job properly. He has hired more and more men to take over the day to day tasks of running the harbours, and he really doesn't know what is going on anymore. Then he is so depressed that none of his sons are worthy of taking over the job of harbourmaster, or even want to do it, that he has given up on everything."

She sighs. "And I made things worse for myself by not having a witness when I paid Vark. That was just foolish, especially considering it was a large amount of money - one hundred platinum coins!"

Celene:
"I think, Lavinia, that it may be time to face up that your brother is no longer the innocent child you probably played happily with when you were younger."

"Oh no! Vanthus isn't like that. I mean, he has fallen in with some rough sorts since he came back. And has been drinking... and gambling. But he would never try and steal the Blue Nixie. I mean, what would be the point? He could just ask me for it! I would gladly let him borrow it or even give it to him."

Lavinia Vanderboren:
She sighs. "And I made things worse for myself by not having a witness when I paid Vark. That was just foolish, especially considering it was a large amount of money - one hundred platinum coins!"

"Well, I am afraid it was a bit naive, but we all act naive at times, expecting the best in people around us, especially those authorised by people in charge. But do you have any other legally binding or confirming documents, such as a deed on the ship, an agreement on the lease of a Anchorage in the harbour or such? Or perhaps some other proof of your payment? Did it come in a secured container, perhaps?

Have you talked with the harbourmaster about it personally? Perhaps we should give him a try?

We have been foiled once before in apprehending Vark, by his hiding under dubious rules and regulation and corrupt law enforcers. Any copy of such documents, or your written authorisation, would be of great help. We would of course give you a concurrent signed agreement on our rights and limits of your authourisation, to avoid you ending in a similar but even worse predicament..."

"So, you would basically give him all of the family property and wealth? Because piecing our intelligence with your story of the missing ring pretty much paints the picture that this is what he is after... If so, should we just give in to him, if he appears and demands the family property and that we leave? that is giving us a pretty poor mandate to work from..."

Angati profusely thanked Kora when she brought the tea and listened to the whole story frowning at certain points. She was about to speak when Celene stepped into the conversation, and she pretty much summed up all that she was about to say.

At Lavinia's response she just couldn't hold her tongue any longer... "Excuse me for saying this out loud, dear, you are a charming girl and I really feel for your troubles. In fact I would very much like to help you prosper for you seem the only one with a well furnished head on her shoulders in this family of yours but..."

She took another sip of the tea, which was just delicious, "Hmm this is a great brand and finely timed, how long is it ? minute and a half resting ?... hmmm anyway... as I feel rather inclined to believe you, my only conclusion is that you are being robbed by your own brother. Was this idea of giving 100 platinum to Vark your own idea ? or was there someone else that suggested it ?".

"Have you thought about it ? have you thought, how comes that your brother... away as you say he is... can manage to contact Vark, and have him work for him from afar while you ... giving him that amount of money manage to get laughed in the face ?. Things just don't match... you are either too innocent or you are being taken advantage of... who would pay all that money just to get into the ship to look for something, and why do it with Vark, instead of directly with the person responsible, when you know or think that he is trustworthy enough ?"

"Finally dear... who do you owe this money to ?""

Logan interjected quickly.  "I think Lavinia is right about the Harbormaster.  Keltar is old and sick and most certainly not doing enough to keep us the harbor, but I don't think he's actively malicious."  The rogue shook his head.  "Vark, on the other hand, and probably Vanthus are another story."

Celene:
...but do you have any other legally binding or confirming documents, such as a deed on the ship, an agreement on the lease of a Anchorage in the harbour or such? Or perhaps some other proof of your payment? Did it come in a secured container, perhaps?

OOC: Heaven defend us from Lawful Good clerics of the goddess of Law! :P

"Oh, yes! Yes to most of those. Both the deed to the ship and the anchorage agreement are in my father's office, I think he also has... well, had... the blue prints for the Blue Nixie up there as well, he showed me them once. Oh Kora, would you be so good as to go upstairs and get those?"

The old Halfling answers that it would be her pleasure and disappears through a door to get the various papers.

"Now, as regards proof of payment of the outstanding anchorage fees... oh, Miss Celene, I have been so silly! No, I didn't get any sort of proof. But I did hand him the money in a monogramed pouch, it has our coat of arms on it. If the money is still in there when you find it, perhaps that proves something? It is exactly one hundred platinum coins, which is a large and unusual amount I am sure you will agree.!"

Celene:
...have you talked with the harbourmaster about it personally? Perhaps we should give him a try?

"Yes, Keltar was the first person I thought about going to. But he is deathly ill and says that he trusts his people. Apparently Vark is one of the people he has sub-contracted to collect anchorage dues in the merchant district, can you believe it, that brute is actually on Keltar's payroll!"

Logan:
Logan interjected quickly.  "I think Lavinia is right about the Harbormaster.  Keltar is old and sick and most certainly not doing enough to keep us the harbor, but I don't think he's actively malicious."  The rogue shook his head.  "Vark, on the other hand, and probably Vanthus are another story."

"Yes, you can take the originals if you like. And I will write up a letter authorising you all as my agents in this matter. KORA! BRING A QUILL, INK AND SOME PAPER AS WELL, THERE'S A DEAR!"

Celene:
...e would of course give you a concurrent signed agreement on our rights and limits of your authourisation, to avoid you ending in a similar but even worse predicament..."

"Oh, really? No, that won't be necessary, I trust you all implicitly!"

OOC: That's that cleric of law coming out again!

Celene:
"So, you would basically give him all of the family property and wealth? Because piecing our intelligence with your story of the missing ring pretty much paints the picture that this is what he is after... If so, should we just give in to him, if he appears and demands the family property and that we leave? that is giving us a pretty poor mandate to work from..."

"What? Oh no! I wouldn't give him everything! He would drink and... snort it all away in a couple of months. But the Blue Nixie is just one ship and he was so disappointed about not getting anything in the inheritance. If he said that he needed the Nixie to set off on his own and make his fortune I would understand."

"That said, if he turns up and demands it, of course you shouldn't just hand it over to him! He should come and see me, as the head of the family, and I can make the necessary changes to the deed."

"And don't jump to conclusions about my mother's missing ring. She probably just put it down somewhere in the house and forgot about it. I'm sure it will turn up one day."

Angati:
Angati took a sip of the tea, which was just delicious, "Hmm this is a great brand and finely timed, how long is it ? minute and a half resting ?... hmmm anyway... as I feel rather inclined to believe you, my only conclusion is that you are being robbed by your own brother. "The tea? Oh, it is Alphatian green all the way from the highlands of Bellisaria, my family has a monopoly on it here in Sasserine and yes, the timing of the 'draw' is VERY important... Hang on. Madam Lidu, are you trying to distract me? No, you don't know Vanthus like I do, he wouldn't cheat me like that. And no, the 100 platinum was the amount owed - five months at two hundred gold a month. Berthing in the merchant district is expensive, but nothing to do with my little brother!"

Angati:
"Finally dear... who do you owe this money to ?""

"Oh, don't worry. It is just the Dawn Council - at any point in time half the families in Sasserine owe it money. And then some of the guildhalls... the merchants guildhall, the smiths guildhall, the shipwrights, the taxidermist guildhall. All just part of running a big business, you know how it is. But all of them are above board and no-one would try and sabotage my family, I am sure of it."

Kora returns to the room with a bundle of rolled up documents under one arm, and quills and ink in the other.

"Thank you Kora. Oh, and here are the plans for the Blue Nixie!" Lavinia's delight at seeing the blue-prints is obvious . "It really is a fine ship, I remember my father being so proud of it when it was first built."

"And here are the anchorage deeds. See, the deed grants my family has the right to moor at the end of pier five in the merchants district for 200 gold a month in perpetuity. Pier five is the one between the merchants' guildhall and the Smiths' Guildhall, it isn't too far from here." Lavinia glances at Celene. "So the law is clearly on our side as I have now paid all of the money owing. The ship should be released."

"And now I will write something to authorise you all as my agents."
Lavinia finds a piece of paper with the Vanderboren coat of arms on top - it is a eight pointed star with several concentric circles in the middle.

Lavinia quickly and deftly writes up a document and signs it. He excellent writing speaks of years of practice in using a quill. When she is finished, the young lady passes it onto Celene for checking. "Do you think this will do? It is only in case the authorities get involve - which they won't, that's the whole problem. Vark and his bunch aren't going to care about this at all, can he even read?"

Celene nod at the paper, agreeing it is fine. She quickly makes a similar document stating their rights and what is not their right, particularly that they forfeit any claim on the Vanderboren ship and any part of the money that they might recover for her.

That finished, she asks around, "so, is our best shot irecovering the money, if it is still to be found, in the pouch with the Vanderboren crest? Or confront Vark to persuade him first person?" The first should perhaps require stealth, the second more direct means...?"

Alohan continued to eat while everyone deliberated, tossing java plums and macadamia nuts into the air only to casually catch them in an open mouth. He was finding his poor command over Sasserine's language to be a bit of a hindrance- his accent was too thick for anyone to understand and he was finding people were generally ignoring his inquiries. Furthermore, the intricate web of cousin-lovers and nefarious deeds were too much for him to comprehend. Tried as he might, understanding the Sasserine people was entirely too complex. Most were the hard working type, looking out for them and theirs but there were also a few powerful individuals lusting over gold and materials while individuals continued to live in squalor. No amount of power and gold could placate their desires and to him, this was too much to comprehend. It was not the Nuari way.

After a time, important missives and paperwork made their way to the table and Alohan had eaten his fill. He stood to pace about the small dining while the topic of infiltrating the Nixie was discussed. "I not be de as fleet of foot as we be needing for sneakin' but I can swim like de best of em'. It be doing us well to observe de boat. See how many people be on watch. If de got weapons, if de care to post a guard. See if we be seeing Vark."

Alohan stops to consider how much time would be needed. "A full sun span, maybe."
Plan: Alohan would suggest observing the boat from afar for a period of time. Just enough to get a feel of the comings and goings and determine the best time for infiltration. I would want to swim up, toss a rope, gain entry to the boat.

Anansi looked around his companions, there were far too many questions to be asked, but it seemed they'd have to trust the lady, rather than loose time trying to prove if what she said was the truth.

She shook her head from side to side, not voicing out her concerns and said "Your trust on your brother is commendable. could we arrange a meeting with him ? if he is trustworthy, he can probably ease up the search through Vark... so that he does what he was paid for... and if he is not, well, you'd learn something that you need learning".

OOC: I'd agree with Alohan. We can also try to watch for the girl that we met at the docks, and I'd touch on Logan's acquaintance before anything else. Maybe there is something that he still cares for that we could bargain with...

"Oh, my goodness," says Lavinia. "I wish I could help, but my brother is out of town. Or at least, he has moved out of the mansion and I have no way of getting in touch with him. I don't know where he has gone, sorry." The noble lady rubs her left cheek again and looks sad.

"Hmm, well the thing that you absolutely must find is my father's ring so I can get into the family vault. I don't know where it is hidden, but probably in the captain's quarters, that is the room my father used the most you know."

"As for the money - I suppose that will be where ever Vark is, but finding the ring and getting my boat back is much more important than the money really."

"Yes, I will send Kora to find you and tell you if any thing changes in regards to the boat or my brother."

Celene sees the wisdom of the suggested strategy in scouting the area and the ship. As the focus seems to be on finding the ring, she ponders, "Lavinia, how does the ring look? And as it's used to open a magical vault, I gather the rings themselves are magical? Do they have any powers beyond opening the vault?"

Re: 1A - TiNH - Part One: A Noble in Need

Logan sat in stunned silence for some time.  First the two hundred gold, then Lavinia throwing around the figure of one hundred platinum coins.  And she just gave it way.  To Vark!?  The theft didn't bother Logan so much as the...ineptness of the whole thing.  Vark had hardly had to do anything for that windfall.  There was no long con going on there, no elaborate ploy.  He'd just found some gullible noble, new to her wealth, and fleeced her out of a king's ransom.  Not even found her!  She came to him and willingly gave the money.  And now Vark was sitting on enough money to...well, knowing Vark, enough money to drink and gamble it all away.  And he probably owed a cut of it to someone else as well.

Finally, Logan shook his head.  Well, he'd earn money do, and he'd have to work a lot harder than Vark for it.

"Yes, we need to find more about this boat, and see what Vark and his cronies are doing.  Alohan can observe from teh water, and I'm sure I can find some nearby roof to watch everything from.  Maybe I can stop by and talk to Keltar as well.  We seemed to get along reasonably well at the wedding."  Logan paused.  He had his own suspicions about Vanthus, but Lavinia obviously did not share them.  "I know Vark well, and he's not the planning type.  Someone must have put him up to this, or is just using him as muscle.  I can ask around Shadowshore and see if I can find anything more."

"Oh, yes!" smiles Lavinia. "I am so glad that someone noticed! The Jade Ravens didn't seem to even see them. I have been attending the Thenalar Academy for Fine Young Ladies for the last ten years, and one thing that was emphasised again and again was that well folded napkins can make or break a social engagement. They are a real conversation starter you know!"

"I tried to go with an adventuring theme you might have noticed. I was disappointed with how the beholder turned out, but the dragon almost makes up for it - don't you think that one is splendid?"

"As for the flowers, they are a type that can't grow here in Sasserine. They are called lotus flowers - I learnt about them from pictures in the library at school. I just love their shape."
