2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

OOC: The following takes place about a week after the assault on the Vanderboren mansion.

The party spend the next week trying to track down the dhow with magenta sails that belongs to the House of Porphyry. Even with the help of 'Young Master Cadogan', the grandson of the harbourmaster himself, this proves to be quite difficult. For sure, it helps a lot that Kassius has unrestricted access to the ship register that records the ownership of every decently sized vessel in Sasserine. The 'register' isn't a single book, but rather a large office filed with filing cabinets and documents strewn over several tables. The previous harbourmaster (the one who choked to death on his own manhood after the 'Lotus Lady' got to him) did not keep the documents in good order, so it takes many hours to make a list of all the dhows in Sasserine - there are about 100.

The register obviously does not include information on what sails the ships have, so then the fun bit begins. Splitting the list up by district the party begin painstakingly investigating every one individually.

The big risk is that the incriminating purple sail would be stowed below deck, but this proves not to be the case. Celene finds the dhow tucked away in a small wharf in the noble district on the fifth day of their inquiry - the vessel in question is called "The Lost Diva" and has the distinctive purple sails furled on its mast.

Celene is shocked when she checks down the list and finds the name of the owner - Magnus Eseriel, second cleric of the temple of Wee Jas... Celene's mentor since childhood...

2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene had been doggedly determined to find the ship with the purple sails and when she did was elated. She had hurried back to find the owner only to be stunned by a familiar name. Eseriel. Her mentor. She went through shock, disbelief, finally settling on anger. The fire within her grew but Celene managed to lock it down before she set the piles of records on fire. She brushed wisps of purple smoke away from her face and left. Unsure how to proceed.

To be clear this will just a thread with Celene? Just want to check before I take further action.

2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

With Remi gone, Alohan was spending more time with his companions. It wasn't that we was lonely- no- more he wanted to develop a closer bond with those he had shed blood with. So when Celene explained that she was going to take point on finding the dhow in question, Alohan offered his assistance. He simply escorted her to the various districts (not that she needed an escort) and helped as an extra pair of eyes filling the silence with small talk and jokes. They conversed about the past, the weather, and their favorite foods (coconuts for Alohan).

When they had spotted the dhow, their excitement carried them back to the harbormasters but as Celene checked the registry, the air began to turn warm. Alohan stared wide eyed at his friend while he could only assume she had put the pieces together on who owned the ship in question. There was an immediate rise in temperature, comparable to how he himself felt when often angry and could only assume she was releasing her own inner pele. He kept his silence for as long as he dared.

"It... it not be lookin' good?" he asked, raising a curious eyebrow. "Ya be lookin' a bit red in de ears."

Celene turned to face Alohan ”Things are not good Alohan.” she said her breath coming out with plumes of smoke as if the room were extremely cold ”The woman who owns the Dhow is my sponsor and mentor at the temple of Wee Jas. Magnus Eseriel.” She said the name as if it were a curse. ”I need to calm down. Then I’ll need to speak with her alone. I’ll need you nearby though in case things go wrong. I have seen her take care of things before. She is a powerful woman but perhaps I can goad her into revealing information.” she said.

I don't have much in the way of precautions to use. Other than making sure Alohan is within shouting distance. The ship is called the Lonely Diva correct? I know that Eseriel was friends with the Opera singer was she ever a singer or dancer herself?

Hmmm, tough question. Eseriel is famous for her generous patronage of opera in the city, and yes, she appears to be 'friends' with Nylaria Absalee, the manageress of the opera house. Celene has never heard that Eseriel was an opera singer or dancer herself though. Does that help?

You can get Alohan into the temple, but not into the private quarters. He will be within yelling distance though.

Alohan frowned as the idea of him tossing with magic users. He didn't quite understand the arcane but knew enough that if he couldn't get to them in time they packed enough lethality to destroy him. That or turn him into a goat or permanently curse him. He knew from previous experiences his mental fortitude was a bit lacking. Regardless, his friend needed him and he would assist her in what she wanted to do.

"What if de be wantin' dis artifact for study or maybe dey be wantin' to lock it away in de dungeon," he asked. "Maybe dey had de good intentions but Vandus be drowing de coconut into de oceana, so to speak. Now why dey be calling demselves de House of Poop-ery I not be knowin'. Admittedly der be some secrets afoot."

"So we be going to de temple? Should I get me dings?"

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene thought about Alohan's word as they walked back through Sasserine. Finally she spoke up "Why would the church send a privately owned vessel? If they were intending to capture the pearl for the greater good why wasn't there a contingent of guards? Why didn't anyone follow up when it wasn't delivered?"

Celene took a deep breath "Someone who wanted to serve this Prince of Tides would want to release the pearls power in a city like Sasserine. It would cause the most chaos in the name of their Lord; spread much more quickly."

"I still think this might have something to do with Karthach Feldspar-Ash. I recall overhearing a bit of conversation between him and an ambassador from some city, I can't recall the name, that spoke of green gas clouds and savagery destroying cities along the coast. What stands out is that he gave no credence to the man's words. Showed no remorse. That's not the way a cleric of Love and Beauty should have reacted. Why would he not even worry that the same thing was headed this way?" she let her words sink in.

"The reason is he already knew what caused the problem and intended to do the same here. Perhaps there are a number of high ranking cleric's involved. Maybe they have created their own alliance. The Hose of Prophyry; led by Karthach himself and employing my own mentor." she looked intently at the barbarian "Does it sound so far fetched?"

Celene looked determined she strode ahead of Alohan looking back over her shoulder she said "Yes. Get your things."

Heading to the opera house first to ask a few questions.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Alohan shrugs at Celene's question. Was it far fetched that some of more prestigious religious leaders in Sasserine followed some demon lord capable of spreading some poisonous disease that mutated and drove mad? Maybe. But to Alohan, it seemed more likely the actions of a select few went unnoticed rather than a unified effort to dismantle society. Regardless, he kept his opinions to himself and went to fetch his belongings, newfangled magical stick included.

As they set out into Sasserine, Alohan broke his peace. "I be rememberin' you speaking about your..." he paused, looking for the word. "... mage day party. De day ya be getting into de church of Wes Jas. Ya be seein' purple flames and talkin' about how de party seemed a bit off. If dis Magus be workin' for this demonlord den would her deception be drowin' off de ordination? I not be knowin' much of dese magic types but if dis Magus be evil, how do she be going about her duties so freely?"

"And dis be de same woman who be restorin' Logan from de dead... twice! Can she be doin' it if she serves some evil demonlord?"

”You’re right Alohan. My anger is causing me to forget important details.” Celene closed her eyes  and recalled the Ordination ”I was given a crystal by Eseriel. It was supposed to shine white showing that I had been accepted by the Goddess. Everyone in attendance was shocked that it was taking so long and then finally it glowed purple. The same color as the ships sails.”

”Eseriel was upset about it at the time. When I questioned her later she brushed off the whole event saying that the crystal turned orange because of my innate ability with fire.”

”What if the crystal wasn’t reacting to me but to Eseriel instead. Giving some kind of warning?” Celene was silent for a while ”When I implied that it would take something equally divine to cause such an occurrence she brushed my worries aside. I remember clearly she said ‘And forget any silly thoughts about intercession from another divine power. We are in the center of the Temple of Wee Jas – only one goddess held sway over that ritual, and I am sure which one it is.’ Exactly what one would expect from someone who feared the intercession of another Divine being.”

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

The mounting evidence that Magus Eseriel was somehow in league with the this Savage Tide was growing and Alohan was immediately beginning to frighten. A few bad clerical eggs could be dealt with but Eseriel was a different beast. He had watched her bring his friend back from the dead on multiple occasions. She commanded magics stronger than he could fathom. All he commanded was a bad temper and a fetish for women.

"I.. I be dinkin' you solved dis mystery... at least, workin' to de important parts. Ya be known' dis lady better den any of us. I be trustin' your mind." He continues on for a bit more, maneuvering around Sasserine citizens and parting the stubborn with girth and taiaha, following Celene as she directed them. "But how do dis be tyin' into Feldspar-Ass? I admit I not be remembering much about dat one other den what Logan be saying but hasn't she helped his Makuahine? Do Ass and Magus be knowin' de oder?"
Onward to the opera house then.

Alohan Nuari:
referencing thread: 1C - TiNH - Part Three: Celene's Ordination. Any hints in there? Maybe a Religion check to see if it is possible?

OOC: Johannes followed it up immediately after it happened and couldn't get much info - Eseriel was tight lipped about it and said little more than to not worry about it, and that it was just Celene's sorceress powers having a slight effect on the ceremony. A check in the library just revealed that it might indicate some sort of interference by unknown forces.

Celene:
”I was given a crystal by Eseriel. It was supposed to shine white showing that I had been accepted by the Goddess. Everyone in attendance was shocked that it was taking so long and then finally it glowed purple. The same color as the ships sails.”

OOC: Yes!

Celene:

OOC: Oh hallelujah, yes! Somebody is actually reading their character arc story!

Celene:
”Volsh even called Eseriel a fiend once. We know him to be an honorable and just man. Why would he do so if he didn’t know something of her past? I’m starting to think we have even more questions to ask. I wonder if Volsh is still in Sasserine?” she asked rhetorically.

OOC: :D Logan knows the answer to that question...

The odd couple head over towards the opera house. Alohan already has all of his stuff with him (do you really think he would leave anything valuable in that hovel he calls home in Shadowshore?) so they waste no time and reach the large building within a quarter of an hour.

The front door is locked, what with the evening performance not being for several hours, but Celene knows another route. She shows Alohan round to a small side alley where a raised loading dock leads to a set of double doors. The doors are open, and a man sits in the doorway, indolently smoking a self-rolled cigarillo that looks like it is in imminent risk of collapse. Celene sees that it is the same half-orc that Eseriel shooed out of the way during their last visit.

Alohan smirked and chuckled but otherwise remained quiet. As they moved about the corridor, he watched the doors, one hand gripping his taiaha in white knuckled anticipation. There was a certain mystery afoot that could prove to be their undoing -the kind he wasn't particularly equipped to handle. If there was a threat, he would do what he knew best, body slams and elbows. He kept alert, moving ahead of Celene around blind corners and doing as she asked when needed. Debauchery or not, he was there to protect his companion.
Hovel: And I would imagine Alohan has graduated from Shadowshore to their new Lotus Lair, especially now that he is less of a tourist and more of a "I am about to save the city from uncertain horrors."

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

The pair enter the backstage area and Celene uses the same bluff to extract some directions to Nylaria from a small group of stagehands who are busy moving furniture around in preparation for the night's performance. One of them gestures towards a large goods elevator and grunts 'downstairs'. As Celene and Alohan move off, they hear crude comment about 'midgets and natives? Is it some sort of theme night?' followed by some crude chuckling.

The elevator is a strange device - a room which you walk into and are then slowly lowered by means of counterweights, dwarven engineering, magic and <DM waves arms in the air> other stuff. The opera house has one of the few examples of this technology in the city and it is used to bring up the heavily props from the downstairs storage. Just as Celene is about to flick the switch to set the contraption in motion, a hand appears from outside, forcing the door open.

"On second thoughts, I think I'd better join you," says the coarse man who'd given them the directions. With dismay, the sorceress sees three more men entering the lift. Then the metal door is swung closed. The man flicks the switch and the floor starts lowering, making the walls start slowly sliding past. The elevator creeks alarmingly - with six people in the lift it is very crowded in there and probably close to its maximum weight capacity as well.

"Oiy, bud," says the man, looking at Alohan. "No weapons down below, even if they are props. It's the mistress' orders." He holds his hand out expectantly, waiting for Alohan to hand the taiaha over. The rest of the men glower at the native. They are all cut from the same cloth - orc blood and tough looking faces with at least one facial scar each. Celene sees one of the men slip his hand into his pocket on the side of his body facing away from Alohan. When the hand returns from the pocket it is holding a metal knuckle duster in it.

Celene:

The man's indignation is cut off as Celene begins the chanting of her spell. The man's face drains of blood, and his fellow ruffians don't look happy either.

"Oiy! Cut that out, you ain't casting no spell on us!" The man reaches out and grabs Celene's shoulder with one hand, while covering up her mouth with the other, instantly interrupting her spell (charm person takes a round to cast so he has plenty of time for this).

"What do ya think you're playing at. You ain't one of the sisters. You ain't got no right to do that." He shoves Celene back against the wall of the elevator shaft and holds her there, both knocking the breath from her and causing her back to scrape painfully along the surface as the elevator continues its crawl downwards.

Oh, you meant that Alohan was being taken down to the villain's secret lair so he could show his crazy native dance so it could potentially be used in an upcoming performance in the opera and ballet house? Yeah... that was far too cerebral for the thug. He is just following orders.

The good thing about this style of writing is that you are free to write yourself out of trouble anyway you like, and of course you have Alohan's heafty support as well.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Alohan had no qualms handing over the weapon. He was equally deadly with his hands and feet if not a touch less lethal. He was in the process of doing so when Celene began her incantation. Before he even had a chance to react, a scuff was breaking out in the elevator.

Regardless, he continued his plan and tossed his weapon at the third bruiser -the one whom otherwise hasn't made an action. The rather large for an enclosed elevator, quarter-quarter staff, sailed horizontally into the man forcing him back out of sheer weight of the blow while he used the moment to throw his elbow into the bruiser clutching Celene. He knew he hit the man in the head -on the soft spot at the base of the neck- and used the man's sudden moment of disorientation to spin him around. With the thug facing Alohan, dazed but alert, the Pearl Islander headed butted him square in the face. The resounding creack alerted all in the elevator to know- Alohan had done some damage*.
typical Sasserine white girl lumps all us dark skins together.
Ready: Keep in mind, IF the Charm is an action to cast, I imagine it might still take control of the leader while the guy scruffing up Celene may still be able to act and force her mouth closed. Anyway, I will ignore the potentially charmed leader, throw the taiaha to the third guy (non threateningly [like in the movies causing them to reel back]) and strike out against the bruiser holding Celene.
10:14, Today: Alohan Nuari rolled 17,27,8,5 using 1d20+7,1d20+7,1d6+2,1d6+2 ((10,20,6,3)) FoB: Normal, Stunning Fist.
10:15, Today: Alohan Nuari rolled 12 using 1d20+7 ((5)), Crit Confirm.

Standard Action: FoB the guy holding Celene- first strike is normal (headbutt the neck shot) then the second strike(headbutt) (potential crit) is a stunning fist.
DC 12( or was it 13?) Con save or be stunned.

Celene dislodged from her attacker by Alohan she tried to think of a quick way out of this situation. She has no ability to fight these men and while she had seen Alohan do many great things she was worried about him taking on three men by himself. She spread her hands out in front of her kindling flames at the tips of her fingers. Purple smoke rose into the elevator and pooled along the ceiling ”I might have little choice but to roast you alive. This elevator will be a deathtrap and the shaft will act like a chimney. The fire will spread and spread quickly. I don’t know the layout of your basement but I am assuming this might be her only way out. She’ll perish along with all of us. Is that a risk your willing to take.” Celene’s eyes flashed purple once more ”My life has just been turned upside down. I don’t have much to live for and besides I might even survive it.” she bluffed.

I don't have much of a way to help. Everything I can do is fire based or make them fall on the ground but I can't be sure that won't effect us. How big is the elevator?

OOC: Yeah, I reakon. Celene, Alohan is from the Nuari people who populate the Pearl Islands to the north of Sasserine. Since he is a member of the royal family he has his people's name as his family name.

Alohan Nuari:
Keep in mind, IF the Charm is an action to cast, I imagine it might still take control of the leader while the guy scruffing up Celene may still be able to act and force her mouth closed.

OOC: I totally screwed up the charm person thing - of course it only takes a standard action to cast charm person otherwise what would the point of it be? I got it mixed up with sleep.

But anyway, my post stands. The leader interrupts the spell casting.

Alohan Nuari:
Anyway, I will ignore the potentially charmed leader, throw the taiaha to the third guy (non threateningly [like in the movies causing them to reel back]) and strike out against the bruiser holding Celene.

OOC: NB: The leader was joined in the elevator by three additional bad guys meaning there are four of them in total.

The target of Alohan's throw reels back as the taiaha is flung at his head. Then the native warrior pulls the leader off Celene and very quickly stuns him with a cracking headbutt to the bridge of the man's nose.

Alohan Nuari:
10:14, Today: Alohan Nuari rolled 17,27,8,5 using 1d20+7,1d20+7,1d6+2,1d6+2 ((10,20,6,3)) FoB: Normal, Stunning Fist.
10:15, Today: Alohan Nuari rolled 12 using 1d20+7 ((5)), Crit Confirm.

OOC: Dude, what the heck is all this? We're not rolling dice anymore. Just tell me what happens.

Celene:
Purple smoke rose into the elevator and pooled along the ceiling ”I might have little choice but to roast you alive. This elevator will be a deathtrap and the shaft will act like a chimney. The fire will spread and spread quickly. I don’t know the layout of your basement but I am assuming this might be her only way out. She’ll perish along with all of us. Is that a risk your willing to take.” Celene’s eyes flashed purple once more ”My life has just been turned upside down. I don’t have much to live for and besides I might even survive it.” she bluffed.

The leader cradled his busted nose in one hand while looking up at Celene balefully. He takes in her determined demener and the purple flames now writhing up around her wrists. He holds out his free hand, indicating for his men to stay back.

"Alright then miss," he says, glowering at her. "Let's just get down to the bottom then, shall we? And see what happens..."

I don't have much of a way to help. Everything I can do is fire based or make them fall on the ground but I can't be sure that won't effect us. How big is the elevator?</quote>

OOC: The elevator is 10'x10' and therefore very cramped with six people in it. The floor is made of wood - there are no walls other than the walls of the shaft and not ceiling either... it is possible to look back up the shaft at the entry door.

The elevator continues its slow shuddering decent while Celene and Alohan continue their face off against the four stagehands. The leader looks Alohan up and down as he feels his nose, trying to figure out if it is broken or not. The half-orc shakes the blood off his hand in disgust. "You ain't in no dance troop," he says, sneering at the Pearl Islander.

Behind the man the rock face of the shaft changes from the dull, grey stone that the backstage area was constructed off to a hard purple rock. Celene sees the line where the rock changes slowly creep up as they continue downwards in the squeaky contraption, feeling uneasy as the rough men continue to stare at them. They must be at least 40' before the surface now, and when the purple rock is about 10' above them the elevator finally stops at the bottom.

The leader of the men tenses, poised to act.

Celene steps back quickly drawing in her power. She thrusts her hands forward and a cloud of glittering purple particles envelopes the half-orc band. Celene reaches forward when she is done and grabs at Alohan's shoulder not wanting him to wade in until the particles had cleared. The purple motes sought out the half-orcs eyes blinding them and covering their skin.

The motes clog the four men's eyes, causing them to yell out and curse. Alohan takes the opportunity to push the metal door open, revealing a 50' long corridor of violet stone on the other side. The way is lit by torches that give off no smoke, and ends at a set of double doors.

"Ahh! After them!" yells the leader. "It's our balls on the chopping block if we don't stop them." All four men draw small knives or knuckle dusters and step forward, gropping at the walls of the elevator.

Alohan rubs his head in relief, pushing against his skull where he impacted the thug. He closed his eyes and exhaled out the nose, thankful they had just escaped what may have been a deadly fight. Needlessly deadly. He turned to Celene, admiring her idea. "Dat was smart," was all he managed, turning to look down the far hall. Not waiting for the command, Alohan crept forward, stepping lightly but still staying alert for any trip wires, depression plates, or anything else that may give their position away. When it was safe (assumingly) he turned to wave Celene over.

OOC: This is free form role play. You only left it there if you think your character left it there. Did Alohan leave it there?

Alohan leads the way down the corridor, doing his best to watch for any sort of trap. This proves to be difficult because: 1) He has never bothered to learn how Logan checks for traps. 2) The spluttering lights provides only dim illumination and throw up wandering shadows across the violet walls providing plenty of hiding places for traps. 3) He is very aware that once the elevator finishes its slow journey to the top those guys will be coming straight back down... probably with reinforcements.

But that said, they make it to the double doors without knowingly setting any traps off. Alohan pretends to listen for noise at the doors - hears nothing - and carefully opens one of them.

They are both surprised by the size of the room on the other side. They are in a 80' by 40' roughly semi-circular room made out of the same porphyry rock. The huge chamber is lit with numerous violet crystal chandeliers that glow dimly, coving the whole room in a purple haze. The walls are covered with purple and red curtains, and a large collection of erotic paintings. Similarly themed statues stand in various places along the walls, and a set of four large pools dominate the edges of the room. Most of the centre of the room is taken up with low tables and purple couches.

Despite the opulent spender of the room it does not feel welcoming. An unpleasant musty smell of dirt and sex reaches their nostrils, and even from the doorway they can see that the couches are covered in disguising looking stains.

The room seems to be empty and a single door against the far wall leads out.

As Celene slinked ahead, Alohan cautiously entered the room with taiaha at the ready. He gave the couches and sexual implement a wide berth but kept his eye on them in case they came alive to eat him. "What de hell is going on in dis place..." he mumbled to himself. What? Oh, shit. Okay, totally ignore my last post then.

The door opens at Celene's touch into a large 50' circular room with breathtaking architecture - even more impressive considering that it has been chiselled out of the rock beneath the opera house above. The vaulted ceiling of the room is 30' high and a large figure eight shaped pool stands in the centre of the room, with the feet of a massive porphyry statue resting in each side of it.

The statue is huge cherubic young man that is so tall his head scrapes the ceiling. His angelic smile is somewhat marred by his naked form and massive erect manhood that he holds in two hands. Around the perimeter are almost a dozen other porphyry statues - these are nine feet tall naked young women.

A twin pair of staircase arc gently downwards on the far side of a room to a small doorway to the south. To the east and west there are small flights of stairs leading up to alcove rooms someone reminiscent of a cathedral.

Celene has little time to focus on the statues or architecture though. In the middle of the room, at the base of the statue, her mentor Magnus Eseriel and Nylaria Absalee are locked in mortal combat, their spells flying around the room as they dance around the pool and try to gain an advantageous position and advantage over each other.

"What are you doing here girl?!" shouts Eseriel, as she spots her young student. "Do you have a deathwish?!"

Nylaria hisses and points a finger at Celene. A magical bolt of purple energy shoots out of her finger and Celene only just manages to throw herself against the doorway in time to avoid the blast. It travels through the doorway and hits the lead thug (the one with the broken nose) full on his body. The man screams as the purple light seems to eat into him, and falls to the ground where he quickly crumbles into a puddle of mush. The rest of the thugs pause in their advance for a second.

To prepare for the ass whoopin', Alohan instinctively touched the newly bought magical wand fixed to this loincloth but decided against it -Celene had her own problems. He instead found a particular corked coconut with magics inside that would help protect him. He identified the coconut due to its texture, uncorking it and downing its contents.

They may have stumbled into the beast's lair and Alohan had no idea how they were going to survive this one. Their best course of action would potentially be to flee. "We have ta get outta here" Alohan called over his shoulder.

Celene times her shot well and the purple flames catch Nylaria exposed. The opera house manager disappears in the blaze for a second, before throwing herself into the figure eight pool in the middle of the room. The woman screams and curses at the sorceress.

Eseriel laughs. "See. She has the gift Nylaria, it is in her blood. It comes naturally to her and she does not need to strive for it like you do."

Nylaria's face curls into a sneer. "Little good it will do her once I have finished with her." She gestures towards Celene and a wave of purple acidic globules shoot out. Celene has to throw herself flat on the floor to avoid being enveloped by them, and by the ferocity with which the acid begins to etch into the rock behind here it appears it was a good thing she did. One of the men advancing on Alohan is caught in the leg by a globule and drops to the floor, screaming as his leg is eaten away. The rest of the men spread out and keep out of line of sight from the battling clerics.

Meanwhile, Eseriel is tried to push forward her advantage, but Nylaria has taken shelter behind the leg of the statue. The opera diva looks up at the huge cherub. "Awaken! Awaken and serve the mistress of the House of Porphyry!"

Eseriel looks up in surprise as the 30' purple statue starts to animate, then a look of concentrate fills her face. "There is only... one... mistress... of this house... Nylaria... and it is me!"

For a few seconds both women are caught up in the test of wills, or perhaps more the contest of authority. Then Nylaria howls in joy as he statue turns towards her and Eseriel slums to the floor dejectedly.

"Yes! Yes! I am the mistress now! Porphyry boy. Kill them! Kill them all, starting with that blonde cow!" The finger pointed at Celene by Nylaria makes it clear who the target is.

The angelic grin never disappears off the boyish statue's face as he grabs his manhood in one hand, lifts it up high and then slams the end down onto the spot where Celene is still lying on the ground. The sorceress rolls away in desperation and the spot where she was a second ago is pummelled by the blow, cracking the paving stones and sending fragments of rock up into the air with a roar.

Meanwhile, Alohan is not directly aware of what is taking place in the next room. But by the acid globules flying past and the sound of cracking paving stones he guesses it is pretty crazy, but maybe not 'gargantuan living statue breaking up the floor with its penis' sort of crazy. He enters into hand to hand combat with the stagehands as they get close. Their hesitation in standing in front of the open doorway prevents them from surrounding him.

Eseriel shots a beam of light at Nylaria, misses, but advances towards Celene as she pulls something from her hair. "Damn it girl! We need to get out of here, use these!" She isn't close enough for Celene to see what the small items in her outstretched hand are.

Alohan experiences a burst of light as he is whisked out of the combat and reappears somewhere else.

He is in a small sitting room with two comfortable pink armchairs and a tiny fireplace in one corner. Magnus Eseiel, second ranking cleric in the temple of Wee Jas, is in the process of putting a tea pot onto the fire. She looks up as Alohan appears, no hint of surprise on her face.

"I should have guessed it would be you that Celene had with her. You're the big native boy that always carries the sack in when it is time for me to resurrect your thief, hmm?"

She steps away from the stove and straightens her grey and black clerical robes a little. They have several holes burned through them and a big rip across one side. A second latter Celene appears, stumbling as she appears in the room in the middle of a jump. It looks like she spent her final few seconds in the House of Porphyry running for her life.

Eseriel sighs. "I am glad you made it out a live girl, but damn it, what were you doing in there?! If I hadn't been in there Nylaria would have lured you to your death, she is not..." Eseriel gasps, clutching at her chest.

"Oh my... oh my..." she whimpers. She sits down in one of the cushy armchairs with a thump, he hands gripping the arm rests. "Oh, I guess that was that then..."

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene caught her breath for a moment as Eseriel spoke as she gathered herself her eyes narrowed and a scowl set on her face "What do you mean that is that..." she said acerbically "Why were you there in the first place?" she asked the question but didn't wait for an answer "Our friend..." she said motioning to Alohan "was torn in half by a savage creature created by the artifact that you tried to bring into this city! And you have he audacity to ask why I was there! I should call the authorities and have to drug through the streets to be tried. I want answers and I want them now!" Celene began to pace in the room "Not just about that damned woman and her massive pornographic statue, about why you interfered with my ordination, the Sisters you seemingly belong to and your need for that pearl, and why you and that wicked woman were discussing using me prior to battling one another." Purple smoke wafted away from Celene's hands as she gesticulated wildly. She settled herself next to Alohan facing Eseriel and waited.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

"Ahhhh.... <sigh> So many questions deserving answers. Well, we have time enough to answer some of them at least. Nylaria and the rest know where we have gone, or at least they will be able to work it out. The temple guards will keep them out, but three of the serving girls are also worshippers of the Lady of Porphyry and could walk right in here... and I will not be any help in resisting them..."

"But in order to answer your questions I need to tell my story from the beginning, how far back shall I go? Where should I start...?"

"...with a cup of tea. Young man, be so good as to take that kettle off the stove and fill the teapot up with hot water will you? I'll take a herbal blend, one of the stronger ones is in order I think. From the small black box with the silver leaf... no, no, at the back... yes, that's the one. A couple of teaspoons, don't be shy..."

Eseriel looks up from her chair at Celene. Steam is literally coming out of the sorceress' ears.

"Right... no more delays. So I begin with a question, my young protégé. Do you believe in fate? That out paths are fixed? Do you believe that once we figure out the path we are on and don't like it we are able to change it? And most importantly do you believe in redemption? Understand that the answers to those questions affect YOU much more than me, my girl.<sips tea and grimaces at the taste>"

"My story begins in the Telvanta Academy of Dance about 50 years ago. I was a young ballet dancer and good, skilled and above all beautiful. Unfortunately the school was corrupted, little more than a hiding place for a sect to a succubus goddess called Shami-Amourae, the Lady of Delight. <shakes head> It's not important who she is, she has been wiped from the celestial pantheon, what is more important is that the sect was discovered and wiped out by a fallen paladin called Larcos Dengrin <pauses> Now he is known as Vorsh.<sips tea> At least, he eventually wiped us out. First of all the enchanted blade forced him to use our services, something which I don't think he has even forgiven himself for."

"After he gain his freedom from the swords he became a harsh and single-minded man. He put the entire sect to the sword... it was a massacre... only a few of the youngest children who were considered to have escaped the corruption were allowed to live. I was one of those children. Nylaria was another. I think he may have spared me because he felt guilt over what he had done when he was possessed, at least I was the eldest of those he allowed to live.<sips tea>"

"And because of his guilt he failed in a way... for he was not harsh enough. Both Nylaria and I had been tainted and were unable to change our desires or... appetites. Over time we both became successful in our own way, me in the temple of Wee Jas and her with her opera singing career. Then we formed another succubus sect, this one with the patroness of the Lady of Porphyry. Yes, Celene, I was only ever pretending to be a servant of the Grey Lady, my power came from another although I did well to disguise it. Well, I think you know how it is, my girl. <sips tea> "

"The opera house became the centre of the new cult - it had been involved with the first one, but only tangentially. A massive temple was dug out below it... ha! It is amazing what you can accomplish with summoned demon labour and decades of patient work. The power of the House of Porphyry grew as we managed to ensnare more and more of the nobility of the city with its passionate embrace. <drinks tea>"

"And then you arrived, young lady. I was visited by the Porphyry Lady in a dream and told where to find you... wandering in the streets, poor little orphan girl that you were. I changed your name to make you harder to find and then took you into the temple so the power of your lineage could be developed and exploited. <takes a gulp of tea and coughs> It seemed like that was going well at least, although you kept your passionate and chaotic side well and truly locked up. That is why I decided you were not ready to know the full truth yet. I mean... 'pornographic statue'? Come now girl! We are all adults here and that is the least of the perversions in the House of Porphyry!"

"We were also told to arrange for the shipment of the Black Pearl, although not for the reasons you think. The pirates of the Crimson Fleet have previously been a free-spirited bunch <chuckle> sure, they conducted the usual acts of evil that piracy entails: murder, theft and rape, but an altogether much more evil shadow has been passing over them. And now they are making these Black Pearls somehow. We used our contacts to get our hands on one, the idea was to investigate it - but our ship abandoned the mission when they saw a magical green explosion - cowards! Do you know more about this?"

"As for the falling out between me and Nylaria? Well, after the failure of the mission to get the Black Pearl and considering your continued stubbornness in displaying the required... *ahem* traits we are looking for, she decided to take matters into her own hands. She has decided to transform herself into a succubus, or at least some imitation of it. For that she needs to sacrifice a dozen virgins... I couldn't countenance that. Who would know! Even I have a limit! In the power struggle that ensued she gained control of the temple and then I helped you both escape and... <sips and coughs loudly>"

"...that resulted in the Lady of Porphyry stripping me of my powers. I am no longer a cleric of any denomination, Celene. I am just an old lady waiting for the end... <studies the dregs in the bottom of the teacup and then downs them in one swig. Grimaces.> The end will be coming soon enough now and there is nothing any of us can do to stop it. Nylaria will hunt you down once she is transformed and she will be more than a match for you."

OOC: Okay, is that enough exposition for you?!

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Alohan sipped his black tea (no sugar or creme) and listened to the Lady's explanation. It was a wild one, a story with many points and peoples of interest. It was difficult -at least for Alohan- to follow along with most of it as he only a passing knowledge of the peoples in play. He met a Vorsch when they battled talking weapons but Alohan wasn't sure it was the same one. He knew of Celene. Knew of Wee Jas and knew of... well, that was about the extent of what he knew. Even at the mention of the Black Pearl, Alohan wasn't sure he understood. 'People were making multiple pearls?' It was an odd thought, especially if Halriss told them they had received the Pearl from the Icendi pirates. Could be she is sailing into a trap -a disconcerting thought.

"Let me get dis true..." he began breaking he silence. "Ya be gettin' together, havin' de fun, little drink, little herb, havin' de sex... normally I be dinkin' dis all be good but.. ya be summoning de demons and devils? Dat is a bit too kinky for even me self." He placed his empty tea cup on the table and leaned forward in his seat.

"But why ya be gettin' dis pearl? What be a sex club be wantin' wit dis... dese... artifacts? I can be understanding some grease, perfumes, and coco.. but dis pearl? Dat is not someding to be used in de sheets." Well, that wasn't entirely ture. Alohan could think of several uses for something like that but the Native hardly thought the Lady in front of him was using it for that purpose.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

"It is not about sex, young man, at least not once you go pass the surface. It is about seduction and influence. And at a level beneath that, corruption and defilement."

"Obviously the Black Pearl was not going to be used in one of our... rites. We were told to get one and study it, try to understand what it is capable of and what it was going to be used for. Which demon lord or minor deity made it? And why are so many being made and why is the Crimson Fleet involved? Of course that was all ruined when something exploded in Kraken’s Cove – what happened there?”

Alohan is not able to drink the tea. He takes a sip and screws up his face at the bitterness of it – it barely tastes like tea at all. His royal training means that he is able to discretely spit the drink back into the cup rather than spraying it all over the room.

Eseriel looks at a clock on the wall. "We have a couple of minutes left and then you'll have to leave me. Unless you want to stay here and fight three of Porphyry's best." She gasps at some unknown pain and slumps down more in her chair.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Alohan weighed the pros and cons about telling Eseriel what exactly the pearl was, unsure if it was the right thing to do. She was adamant that her end would be soon -at the hands of Nylaria- so it wouldn't hurt to fill her in on how horrible the artifacts were. He doubted they were anything more than a collection of highly sexualized dominatrixes uninterested in bringing the end to everyone in Sasserine. But her patron? The demon lords they bring forth to assist in the sodomy and defilement? Perhaps it was using them under the guise of good natured loving.

"Dat pearl be fallin' and splittin' open, releasing some green gas dat be reshaping a man's body and mind. Turnin' dem savage. Turnin' dem into murders. Dink about dat Lady, if dis pearl was brought to dis city, dink of all de people dat gas be gettin' into. I dink you were taken for fools- whoever be asking for you to be getting de pearl to... study... be wantin' you to unleash someding on dese people de likes dey never be seein'."

Alohan stood -glancing to Celene- her anger had obviously consumed her at the moment. "Who was it? Who be askin' ya to get de pearl?" he asked with as much authority he could muster. Of course, when he released all this talk of defilement and virgins has left its mark on him, his inner pele came out in a flash of crimson across his ebony face.

Eseriel doesn't seem indimidated by Alohan at all, but is very surprised about what the Black Pearls actually do. But then she seems to give up and if anything she is more relaxed in her chair than before.

"Hmm... <chin nods down to her chest a little> who asks for us to get one and study it? The Lady of Porphyry, Malcanthet, the Queen of the Succubi herself. She is my deity. Or at least she was. She stripped me of my powers an instant after we teleported back here."

Her voice grows softer and quieter. Her chin lands on her chest and stays there. "Not that I care, my heart has gone out of it. I hope you have more luck with her than I had 'Bend-wills-to-her', you have the gift if nothing else."

She continues very quietly. "She just said study it. Why would she want us to activate it? You can't seduce savage beast. It makes no sense that she would us to use it. Just study it..."

Celene looked at her mentor questioningly. The woman seemed to be growing weaker. Had she poisoned her own tea? Is that why she told Alohan not to drink? If she had there was little time. It was hard to keep the fire of her rage stoked as she looked upon the pitiful woman. ”What did they want me for? Who is Bends-Wills-To-Her.” Celene asked with urgency.

"They want you because you are rare child. You have succubus blood in your bloodline - in fact I guess you might even be a half-succubus. But your outward... <gasps in pain> ...outward appearance gives no sign of it. You have been slow to take to the worship and delights of Malcanthet too. Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene's eyes close as she tries to reconcile the sorrow of her mentor dying and the pain of her deception. The realization that she was to be used by House Porphyry sickens her to her core. She leans down and gives one last embrace to her mentor. She whispers to her "I'll see that Larcos Degrin's work is finished." not sure if the statement would give the woman hope or not in her final moments.

When Celene finally straightened her face looked more determined than it ever had before. She turned to Alohan. "We need to find the others; but first we need to escape these Sisters of Porphyry." Celene looked around for any clothes they might use as a disguise. She was sure someone would notice Alohan leaving the chambers of one of the temples high ranking officials and she didn't want to raise any more of an alarm. Especially when the woman would be found dead.

He put his hand on her shoulder and squeezed, giving Celene the silence she needed.

"Ya be tryin' ta hide me?" he said with mocking sarcasm. He doubted anything in Lady Magnus's closet would fit and if it did, he doubted it would hide his frame. "what, I be puttin' on de skirt and fancy myself a priestmen?" It took him a bit to realize his attempt at humor was a bit condescending. He frowned and tried to smile apologetically.

OOC: Damn, you don’t let get sentimentality get in the way of looting, do you!

Celene bows her head in sorrow… for a few seconds, after that she is going through the old lady’s pockets for loose change.

Celene finds two more hairclips like the one that she and Alohan used to escape just before, and up to 5,000 gp of magic items that a high ranking cleric might have on her person. There is not time to more thoroughly loot the room as they have to make their escape.

Alohan Nuari:

The pair search Eseriel’s closests and find nothing but the grey and black ropes of a cleric of Wee Jas. Eseriel wasn’t a short lady, but even so it is clear these are going to look ridiculous on the broad chested native – the hem of the robes only come down to mid way between his knees and his ankles making it look more like a half length skirt.

Celene is no problem, she already has her clerical robes on and by putting her hood up she will not be easily recognisable.

OOC: Celene reakons that they might just be able to make a break for it. Of course men are not generally permitted to enter the residence areas of the temple (only women can become clerics of Wee Jas), but the guards are there to prevent men from coming IN, not out. And most of the guards are on the perimeter of the temple anyway.

Men do come in sometimes. Craftsmen for example… But using that subterfuge will take time and increase the risk of bumping into these ‘sisters of Porphyry’.

Men also come in as ‘consorts’ for the ladies (clerics of Wee Jas don’t take vows of chastity, and some even marry although this is frowned upon), but these trysts are kept as discrete as possible.

She headed in the direction of the nearest exit moving as slowly as she could. She needed to grieve but this wasn't the time. Once they were safe she could break down.

She wouldn't happen to have a headband of alluring charisma would she? To bolster her ability to channel? Wand of Shield of Faith. 5 potions cure light wounds? That's 5000 gold.

We will be making the assumption that everyone survives 'The Chimes of Midnight' in that they will all be present here for 'The House of Porphyry'.

Yeah, should could conceivably have that headband. Go for it. Confirm that the items total 5,000 gp.

I'm going to have to think about Celene and Alohan's exit from the temple and get back to you. So he doesn't have the robes on? That would have been funny at least.

Yes, she was a high ranking cleric so her rooms have some big windows - big enough for Alohan.

But the room is on the second floor.

But there are vines to climb down.

But the windows open out onto an inner garden where the cleric take strolls.

But it is in the heat of the day so it should be quiet now.

It was hard, but nothing he didn't expect, straightening himself, and looking up to the open window above him.

He glanced about the inner garden around him to make sure the coast was clear before turning back to his friend and holding his arms out wide."Come, come!" he loudly whispered.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Alohan lands a little harder than he would've liked to, but is pleasantly surprised to find the soft grass provides enough cushioning that he doesn't take damage. Celene's exit is much more ungainly. She squeals a little as the vines pry off the wall, but at least has the presence of mind to come down feet first. Alohan tries to catch her, mainly ends up just getting in the way, and the paid end up in a jumbled heap at the bottom of the window. As she gets to her feet Celene finds that she is also unhurt.

The barbarian and the multi-class sorceress/cleric head across the garden towards the door that Celene figures will put them closest to the back exit from the temple. This involves crossing the centre of the garden and moving along the side of leaf shrouded gazebo. Celene's breath catches in her throat as she realises that despite the afternoon heat, there are several people in the wooden building.

Magus Annah Teranaki, the aged and shrill high-priestess of the temple of Wee Jas sits inside, surrounded by several of her clerics holding court. The High Magus herself is lying down on a bamboo divan, and being fanned by several acolytes, and like usual, barely seems to be awake. Her vast brown bulk seems to simmer like an egg on a frying pan, even though she is shaded from the hot sun. Exactly like during Celene's ordination ceremony, the old lady surprises the sorceress with her perception.

"Eh? What is this?" enquires the priestess in her shrill, warbling voice. "He's not a gardener!" The Polynesian woman tries to move her vast bulk enough to prop herself up into a sitting position as she peers at Celene and Alohan through the leafy holes in the gazebo.

Indeed, although all of the gardeners are men, and it is common enough for them to be moving around at all times of the day, none of them walk around in loin cloths...

“So boy, you made it all the way to Sasserine only to pimp yourself out to fatuous blonde bimbos and old ladies?” she asks, surprisingly addressing him fluently in his own language. “Is this what you intended when you set out on your way to this great city, hmm? Answer me boy! And tell the truth, I will know if you’re lying! Which island are you from?” she snaps at him.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Alohan bristled his chest at the woman's words, upset he had to remain 'in character' so as not to draw attention. Much of him wanted to promptly put the woman in her place but Alohan knew it wouldn't do much more than bolster his own pride. He didn't need that. He was confident in his own identity not to challenge every overweight Islander he met outside his island's shores. Still, what he wouldn't give to see the woman's face after she learned he was heir to the throne. For now, he would have to play the part. For now, his pele would remain.

He shifted into his own tongue, giving Magus Teranakia proper island courtesy. He hung his head low, arms wide, showing a sign of submittance that looked -to any outsider- nothing more than a generous bow. "Lovely lady," he began in his native tongue. "It pleasures me that you have showed interest in a pimp such as myself. Please, I do not mean to ruin your day with my presence. I am of the Isle Nuar -Pearl Harbor specifically" he explained, preferring to use his capital's native name versus the foreign Seagirt. "Sasserine is filled with many opportunities -don't fault me these fatuous blondes and old ladies enjoy an island man such as myself. I am providing a service that is in demand."

"But I would be remiss if I didn't mention how unsatiated these women leave me. They are no match for the ladies at home... or a lady such as yourself." He left himself trail off, stealing a glance at her in hopes his flattery was enough to divert attention.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Magus Teranaki ignores the cheeky islander's last comment, already drifting away at the mention of the sparkling Pearl Harbor. She continues talking in the native tongue that she shares with Alohan.

"I was just a girl last time I saw the pristine water and sparkling white sands of Nuar. Mighty Kamakou towers over all! A legend of a taniwha around every corner. I wonder if it has changed much. I always meant to go back. Just never found the time."

The lady has sunk back onto her cushions and the adepts have resumed their fanning. Her voice trails off and Celene and Alohan begin to wonder if she has fallen asleep. But she speaks up quietly, this time in the common tongue. "Be more discrete next time. I am running a temple here, not a brothel. Eseriel should know that. I have spoken to her before about this, I see we need to have words again..."

She dismisses them with a wave of one chubby wrist, not bothering to even open her eyes.

With relief the pair make their way to one of the gates leading from the garden. Celene can't resist one final look back at the window to Magnus Eseriel's quarters - the woman who had been almost like a mother to her over the last ten years. Whatever her ulterior motives, the cleric had taken her in off the street, hadn't mistreated her and had encouraged her to develop her native talents. True, only so she could be enlisted into some sort of succubus sex cult, but in a way was that even Eseriel's fault?

Celene's heart jumps as she sees a figure at the window. Eseriel? Was she okay? No, it is Belinda, the serving girl that Eseriel always used for sensitive missions. As the sorceress watches, the buxom blonde girl's face turns upwards in a snarl, much in the same way that Nylaria's face changed when Celene moved her along during the first day of Carnavalè. Then the girl's face changes back to normal... and she begins to scream.

"AAAAAAAIIIII! Magnus Eseriel is dead! Murdered! STOP THEM!" Belinda is pointing directly at Celene and Alohan across the garden courtyard.

Celene doesn't wait for anyone's response; she also didn't have time to deal with her emotions. She ushers Alohan out of the gate and then lays down a layer of grease to slow any pursuers. Her mind races as she tries to remember the quickest way out of the temple and she takes a moment to create another trap at each turn.

Upon seeing Celene taking evasive measures, all Alohan can do is dutiful follow along. Although he has his own tricks to evading pursuers, he forgoes doing any of them -the temple of Wes Jas is not his enemy. It would not sit well with him if any of them got hurt. Well... that plump Nuari lady could get herself hurt.

"We run, get away. What den? Dey not be findin' us?" Alohan barks in-between gasps of breath. "While I be dinkin' we carry enough weight wit de guard, I not be dinkin dey look away from murder..." He knew they would be able to get out of the charges eventually but the time wasted trying to clear their name will be a determent to them stopping whatever savage plague is about to befall Sasserine. Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene and Alohan dodge and weave their way through the temple, moving via the shortest route through the kitchens to exit the building. There is the sound of pursuers, but also the sound of cursing as the various obstacles that the par has left behind take effect – the grease spell cast on a step flight of stairs particularly causes a lot of consternation.

They don’t stop running when they get to the streets. They move as quickly as possible to the safest place in town – the former Lotus Dragon lair that now serves as Angati’s home. Thankfully, they find that their colleagues are back from their various errands and all three of their friends, Logan, Angati and Kassius are in the base enjoying afternoon tea.

OOC: Yay! Now this thread has all of the characters in it!!

As the sorceress collapses into one of Angati’s fancy armchairs and then begins to consider her situation. True, in a city where high level clerics and truth spells are available she will be able to clear her name, but it will take time. Does she have time to do that and stop Nylaria’s nefarious plan? Eseriel told her not to bother to even try – the old lady considered the temple guardian way beyond their abilities to destroy. They need some help, but who would be interested in taking down a demon tainted nest at such short notice?

Celene caught her breath and then interrupted afternoon tea "We need to find Vorsh again!" she half yelled. "He owes us for all the help we gave him with the Cabanites and the Revolutionary Guard. Never mind that he is responsible for the whole mess to begin with. He'll want it done as much, if not more, than I." waited to see if anyone knew where the man was completely forgetting to give any type of explanation for her ranting.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene has never read anything about a porphyry construct like this before, but assuming it has similar properties to a stone golem they party are looking at this following:

- adamantine weapons required to bypass an impressive DR
- immune to magic effects that allow spell resistance

What worries her is that this 'porphyry boy' is much larger than any construct she has every heard about. She thinks that the party really needs assistance in order to defeat this foe.

They all gathered in their dungeon fortress, Alohan now glad his life wasn't in jeopardy. He listen attentively while Celene had relayed to the rest of them what had happened underneath the opera house adding small details here and there (like how he critted the guy on the elevator but no one was there to see it). He was at an agreement -Nylaria needed to be dealt with but her powers were a bit, beyond their capabilities. Small time thugs and rogue guilds were different than sexed up demon worshippers.

At the topic of finding allies, Alohan looked to Logan. "Dat church ya be findin' with de help from ya mum- Whirlin' Swords or someding. You be dinkin' dey can help us?" Just the other day Logan was finding Vorsh empowered by some sort of warrior clergy hell bent on extinguishing demon cults. He didn't think much of it at the time, still attempting to puzzle how that factored into the Black Pearl but this new lead could be exactly what they were looking for.

OOC: Hey, thanks guys! It's been nice to break free from the dungeoneering a little just go crazy with freeform. It's let us be more cinematic, I think.

Yes, let's assume that Celene brings everyone up to date on what happening underneath the opera house, the giant porphyry guardian golem, and the fate of her mentor.

As for putting the other thread on hold, well, that depends on you guys. I want to get a post in each thread from each character at least every second day - are you guys up to doing that in TWO threads? We'll see how we go, but I always imagined putting one of the threads on hold at this point.

OOC: Logan, you're the crucial link in all this. Is Logan willing to make the introductions? He met the Whirling Furies about three weeks ago and has been training with Vorsh since then. He has also been on the lookout for someway to prove himself to the group in order to convince Lady Silvermane to cast that commune spell and figure out what is going on with his Mom. Maybe this is that opportunity. After all, this is a cult with demonic influence, it should be something that the Church of the Whirling Fury is interested in.

With Angati putting her armour on, it seems that the decision is made. The group head over to the windowless building in the Cudgel district which serves as a church for a group of barbarian demon hunters who style themselves the 'whirling furies'...

As a probationary member, Logan now has a key and is able to open the padlocked front door. Still, he receives a frosty welcome when the two men sitting on guard in the first room see that he has brought his entourage with him. They are told to stay put while Lady Silvermoon and Larcos Dengrin are summoned.

The two Whirling Furies who'd been guarding the front door whooped. "Time to open up a flask of whipped ass!" screamed one - Logan recognised him as Torin Freddricksdatter, the barbarian from the northern reaches. The man ran out to assemble the troops.

Less than one hour later saw the party assembled outside the back door of the opera house with ten boisterous Whirling Furies joking and jostling by their side. Vorsh and Lady Silvermane were also with them, the lady eldarin dressed in a highly ornate set of mithral armour that gleamed in the setting sun. "Sorry about betraying the secret, Vorsh.  There wasn't time to separately coordinate all of this.  I thought it was more important to catch this sect 'in the act', as it were, and wipe them out than to waste time trying to preserve the secret of the Church.  Besides, these are all people we can trust - you've worked with them, and you've seen how much they care about the well-being of Sasserine."

He recognized the familiar barrier as it manifested around his skin, the dull vibration that he was beginning to get all too accustomed to. It was simple enough, armor granted courtesy of the very expensive wand they had invested in, but it was beginning to become a necessity for him. As the enemies were more adept at killing and capable of summon dangerous magics, Alohan was beginning to worry about his person.

As they were traveling, Alohan moved to pull Celene aside, keeping his voice low enough so not many of those heard -especially Karthach. Satisfied the dwarf wasn't in earshot, he leaned in low to sneak in Celene's ear. "Ya still worried about dat one?" he asks, pointing to Karthach. He had remembered her conversations earlier, recalling how the young cleric put together clues regarding Karthach's family name. Alohan doubted it was a coincidence- Feldspar-ash couldn't have been some randomly generated surname. It had to be linked.

Better to stay cautious.

Angati:
Well mage armor is certainly long duration, but shield of faith goes by minutes... I don't know if we could do it... Angati would certainly want a shield of faith, and would suggest armor on pets, familiars and Alohan (no pun intended... yeah sure!)

Heh! :D

Celene:
We can use the shield of faith on the elevator ride down.

Agreed. There might be some minor skirmishes before that, but it's pretty clear that the real action is waiting for you down in the basement.

Angati:
Either that or I do protection from evil.. which is less AC, but it also adds to Saves... which might come handy... handier even... It might be worth it casting it on our selves... better than Shield..

Prot. from evil is another great option. Again, if you want it then don't be shy. Just say you get Angati to cast it on you instead of / in addition to the mage armour and shield of faith. You have 12 hours to post to that effect...

Alohan Nuari:
...Alohan doubted it was a coincidence- Feldspar-ash couldn't have been some randomly generated surname. It had to be linked....

Oh, oh, oh, you, you scoundrel! You are a scoundrel sir!!

Okay, pausing to give a final chance for buff selection and also because the next post is going to be a monster and I need to set aside some time to do it right.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene listened to Alohan and nodded. She had her suspicions about the man and nothing had yet changed her mind that he wasn’t part of this. While it did seem strange that this league of women would involve a high ranking male cleric; if it did it would be one dedicated to love. Love that can easily turn to lust. A steely look came over her and she called to Vorsh. She stepped slowly allowing the others to walk ahead and hopefully getting a chance to speak to the man in private.

”Vorsh; I’m concerened about the presence of Karthach. How well do you know him?” she asked the paladin.

Mage armor for Celene and that’s about it. Also thanks Alohan for the segway into conspiracy theory. :)

Angati would cast Prot. from evil on herself, and any other party members that prefer it to Shield of Faith... (let me know how many, I have max of 7 in total but that would leave me without 1st lvl spells).
She would cast Divine favor on herself if enough 1st lvl spells left after prom from evil.
Would ask for armor on Omi (just in case I have to use him for touch spells).

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene:
”Vorsh; I’m concerened about the presence of Karthach. How well do you know him?” she asked the paladin.

"Karthach? I've known him for over fifty years now. And little lady, trust me when I say that in this matter you can count on him." Vorsh hangs back a little more to make sure that the dwarf is out of earshot.

"Karthach lost his entire family - wife and children - to the original House of Porphyry in the Dance Academy. It was after that happened that he changed his name - 'Feldspar' because apparently it is one of the minerals in porphyry and 'Ash' because of his loss and the oath he took to burn such 'houses' to the ground if they were ever to reappear in the city. The gods know that his decades farting about in the shrine of beauty haven't done much to help prepare him for this day, but I wouldn't deny him the chance for retribution."

OOC: There you go Ron... saved it. Slightly better than 'plan A' I think.

Information about all the buffs acknowledged.

Before they enter, Vorsh gives the party a run down on the plan - such as it is.

"Logan, I thank you and the rest of your people for bringing this to our attention and you are welcome to come along as support... but you need to leave the front line combat to me and the Whirling Furies. If last time is anything to go by, your crew simply doesn't have the experience or resilience to contribute here... So stay back, stay out of the way and we'll let you know if we need any help."

Then the large group - including the twelve Whirling Furies, the party and Karthach they now number 19 - moves into the opera house via the loading dock door. The benefit of having a dozen experienced warriors proves obvious as they make their way through the waiting defenders. An expression involving 'butter' and 'hot knives' comes to mind as the Whirling Furies carve a path through the assembled stage hands. Within a few minutes they arrive at the lift down to the basement.

The lift has been sabotaged and lies in a crumpled heap at the bottom of the shaft, but the Whirling Furies arcane spellcaster, the lich with the glowing green eyes and the lisp casts a modified featherfall spell that allows all NINETEEN of them to reach the bottom without problems. The abilities of the group really are very impressive.

OOC: Okay, the party buffs up and the clock starts ticking now. The shortest duration spells the protection from evil and gravity bow get cast last. The Whirling Furies likewise receive a massive assortment of arcane and divine buffs from their spellcasters.

They run down the short corridor with the spluttering, smokeless torches and the lich blows apart the heavy doors at the far end. This is followed by another sprint across the room with the grimy couches so that they enter the room with the central pool... and Porphyry boy. Nylaria is waiting for them there as well - but so transformed as to almost be unrecognisable.

"Hee hee!" lauches Nylaria. "You're too late, too slow and too stupid old man. It is time for you and your ragtag groupies to die now." She clicks her fingers at the porphyry statue. "Kill them all while I finish the ritual."

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

"Okay you scoundrals! You know the plan, hit this freak of magic hard and break him down." The barbarian start synching themselves up for the upcoming fray.

"Brrrrk! Brk! Brrrrrkk!" clucks the avian-like figure of Lord Buzzbeak as he whips himself up into a frothing fury. "Brrrk! FOR THE GYERIAN NATIONS!" he bellows as he charges in first to melee with the huge statue.

The impish grin on the boy-statue's face does not change, but the end of his manhood ripples like flowing water until it becomes a blade as sharp as glass. With one scything motion he sweeps it downwards and slices the bird-man's head right off. Lord Buzzbeak's corpse starts running around the room in circles with blood splurting out of his neck.

"Oh frak! Oh frak! Oh frak!" gurgles the lich as he watches in stunned horror.

"Frak! Be frakken careful people! This isn't a walk along the grand canal!"

"Of frak! Larcos, it chopped his head right off like he was a chicken!"

"Pull yourself together Hamish! We need you man!"

But the lich merely backs away, his green eyes watering in horror, until he is in a corner of the room.

Out of the west annex bursts another 30' foot monstrosity. This is another golem, but this one is made out of stitched together giant ladies' parts... The contruct is made of a hundred angry vaginas stapled together into a roughly humanoid figure. The beast pauses at the top of the steps and roars - each set of lips opening to reveal a row of razor sharp teeth.

"Oh frak! What the frak is that?! Logan, you said there was only one of these things you little frak!" Vorsh grabs the rogue by the shoulder and shakes him hard.

"Ahhh, I hate working with frakken amateurs. Furies! Split into alpha and beta squads, alpha take on the young man with the impressive stature."

Vorsh turns to the party and Karthach. "As for you lot, you can't help here. Follow Nylaria. Stop her completing the ritual in any way you can. We'll join you when we finish."

OOC: So... the Whirling Furies are nothing more than a fancy timer. Each round 1d2 of them are going to die in terrible, terrible... but amusing ways. If you don't defeat Nylaria before they are all dead then the constructs will come after you and kill 1d2 of YOU GUYS each round... no attack rolls... no saving throws, you just die.

Good luck!

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

The party skip through the room, using the barbarians as a distraction so they can follow after Nylaria. She waits for them in the next room (which is huge!) and she is not alone.

A dozen teenage ballet dancers are lined up across the front of the room, their blank and pale faces a stark contrast to the pink outfits they have on. For the second they seem to be just holding their position between the party and Nylaria.

Stationed behind a pool of pure blue liquid that smells a lot like bleach, three woman stand dressed in maid's outfits. Celene recognised two of them - Belinda was Eseriel's contact in the temple of Wee Jas and had been the one to snarl at her from the cleric's window during Celene's escape. The other she recognised was called Elisabeth and she was also a maid in the temple.

Nylaria herself is placed down the other end of the room, behind some pot plants and next to several more pools build into the floor with a fluid that made their eye's water.

"Enough is enough," muttered Nylaria. "Oh little blonde Bends-wills-to-her, if only you had learnt to play the game. But it is too late now, and you are going to pay the ultimate price no matter how impressive your bloodline and pedigree is."

<START OF PORPHYRY TURN ONE>
OOC: Bad guys go first since this is an ambush they have been planning for hours.

Nylaria clicks her fingers again - this time at the three maids. "Finish it," she says simply and then focuses for a moment. A ghostly shape takes form a few feet away from Celene. It is a young man with impressive physique and a barbed whip in hand. Nylaria points him towards Celene. "Kill that blonde cow." The ghostly figure strikes out with stunning speed and the whip lashes across Celene's front, drawing blood (10 hp damage).

Meanwhile the three girls behind the pool start calling out.

"Alohan! Alohan, isn't it? Why don't you come up here and play Alohan? Come on, walk right up here." says Belinda (A).

"Logan. Ohhhhhhh, Logan! I like your hair! Come up here so I can touch it!" added Elisabeth (B).

"Hey, half-orc! Come and get some!" says the third (C), not seeing the point in saying more.

OOC: Alohah, Logan and Kassius, I need a DC16 will save from each of you. Failure means that you start walking slowly directly towards your enchanter.

The ballet girls crowd in, trying to grapple Angati and Kibeti.

I think Logan has to avoid 5(!) OOC: It is only a DC of 5 + 8 (since there are four ADDITIONALS) + #10's CMD = 24

Yeah, she's only a teenage girl, so her CMD sucks. Logan therefore makes it just fine. Technically he needs another acrobatics check to get from K5 to K6 without triggering an AoO, but don't worry about it.

The shadowshore rogue disappears from view and barges his way through the crowd of tutu wearing dancers. He reappears next to the blinded maid, who is continuing to entice Kassius to his doom in the caustic pit. Without hesistation or remorse, Logan puts two blades into her side and then kicks her into the pool. The other two blinded maids don't even realise what has happened.

For future reference, if you have total concealment, you don't provoke AoOs. So unless the enemy can see invisible, Logan didn't need to use acrobatics at all.

Kassius' mind started to fog over slightly, and he struggled against the magic. The outcome was still in doubt when Logan's knives resolved the issue quite convincingly. Snapping out of the funk, Kassius turned towards the final maid, hoping to help Alohan as Logan had helped him. The arrows slammed into her chest, knocking her back and hopefully breaking the spell.

Kibeti's CMD is 20 exactly, or 22 against evil opponents (from protection from evil). Are the dancer's evil?

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Kassius:
For future reference, if you have total concealment, you don't provoke AoOs. So unless the enemy can see invisible, Logan didn't need to use acrobatics at all.

OOC: Duh! Thanks Kassius!

Kassius:
Kibeti's CMD is 20 exactly, or 22 against evil opponents (from protection from evil). Are the dancer's evil?

OOC: I've always found this aspect of protection from evil difficult to interpret. What is evil? The ballet dancers are not evil, but they are charmed...

CRB:
...the subject gains a +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus on saves. Both these bonuses apply against attacks made or effects created by evil creatures.

I'm going to classify this under 'effect created by an evil creature' and say that the charmed girls do count as being 'evil' for the purposes of the protection from evil spell. Attack away Kibeti!

Kibeti:
Kibeti meanwhile, at Kassius' command, tries to ignore the teenage girls and move to attack the spirit attacking Celene.

Kibeti's jaws snap straight through the ghostly shape. Being a construct of force, there is simply nothing physical for the great cat to latch his teeth into.

OOC: So that is the party's turn done I think. I will post the bad guy's response tonight or tomorrow morning.

Kassius' two arrow slam into the maid's chest. She wails, but somehow continues her enticement of Alohan through gritted teeth. The morose barbarian wades into the pool of bleach. At least it isn't too deep... only knee height. But the liquid in it is very strong and immediately starts burning his legs. (2d6 acid damage, roll for yourself pls!).

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene launches her successful blinding spell and then pulls back a few feet. She hears a scurrying from the corridor behind her.

"You need to be careful out there little miss!" exclaims Karthack, the old dwarf appears to be taking cover in the lee of the doorway. "Let me help you as much as I can."

The dwarf chants and then lays his hands on her - most of her wounds heal over (9 hp healed).

As the party continues its battle with Nylaria and her flunkies, the main battle is happening out in the other room. The Whirling Furies spring into action and spells begin to fly against the two golem constructs. Torin Freddricksdatter is the next to go bezerker rage...

"LET'S... DO... THIS!!!" he bellows and charges straight at the nasty vagina flesh golem. The huge contruct doesn't break its stride and merely scoops down so that the northern barbarian is sucked up into one set of labia where he is pulled apart, shrieking, by rows and rows of jagged teeth.

"Holy Frac!" exclaims Vorsh. "Be careful of that flesh golem people."

"Well, at least-ah he died-ah a warrior's death, Vorsh-san," says the Asiatic warrior called Yatsu Hoshimoto. Vorsh raises one incredulous eyebrow at him.

The purple boy takes up his Jonston in a strong two-handed grip and then slams his tallywacker down onto the charging form of the dwarf 'Bruce Skullhat'.

Elisabeth (Maid B) realises that Logan has not fallen for her charms calls out to Kassius instead. "Kassius! I can't see! Please come and help."

OOC: You know the drill Kassius. DC16 will save or walk towards her.

Belinda (Maid A) is bleeding heavily from Kassius' arrows, but keeps up her call to Alohan who has now reached her feet. "Good boy Alohan! Just stay there a little longer my lover boy..."

OOC: No save allowed as she is just continuing the enchantment...

Nylaria laughs an hysterical laugh tinged with madness and blood lust. "Fight all you want little children, this is not going to end well for you."

With a sweep of her hand she summons a bolt of lightning that rips through Angati, then Kassius, then Celene and then Karthach!

OOC: 3d6 damage, roll yourself, DC16 reflex save for half damage.

Karthack takes 11 hp of damage.

The ghostly succubus cracks his whip and his Celene again (5 hp damage).

Updated battle map. I will update the hp totals later after people roll for lightning and acid damage.

NB: The ballet dancers are armed with small knives. Angati killed the one that she used spiritual weapon on (if that is the course of action that Beni is going with), but I have not subtracted her from the map yet (#7).

Celene was relieved when the dwarf healed her wounds; but it was fleeting. She couldn’t avoid the lightning and took almost the full brunt of Nylaria’s power. With her hair standing on end the small sorceress gathered he self and flung power of her own at the horrible woman. Alohan quickly high stepped through the caustic acid- even under an enchantment he had a sense of self preservation. He recklessly high stepped, making his way as quickly as he could to the open arms of... Logan? What was he doing there?

As the thief ended the life of his enchantress, Alohan's mind came back to him, but, with his awakening came the blinding pain of his flesh burning away below the knee. He leapt out of the pool, shaking his legs in an effort to dislodge whatever liquid remained. As he danced between feet, he looked about, getting a feel for who was left to pummel. Spotting Nylaria, the native held his taiaha high and took off.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Kassius sends an arrow into the thigh of maid B. She gives a whelp and clutches at the arterial blood now splurting out, but doesn't stop calling to him. "Come on now Kassius. Don't be like that, baby. Come here darling..."

The spiritual ally is armed with a barbed whip which is technically a missile weapon and Kibeti therefore doesn't trigger an AoO when moving past him. He does trigger AoO's from the dancing girls, but his armour class is too good for them to hit him so... Kibeti makes it to A13 without incident.

As Alohan runs at Nylaria, she welcomes him with open arms. "Yes, yes, come to me my savage barbarian." She lets her robe slip from her shoulders and fall to the floor. "Behold the sacrilegious perfection of my body SAVAGE!" Alohan stumbles as the full magnificence of her naked body comes into view. She truly is dazzling and he can't help but look.

OOC: This happens as he runs towards her and before he strikes. Alohan must make a DC21 fort save or be blinded... FOREVER! If he makes the save then he manages to reach her without being blinded... and misses as per his earlier roll.

OOC: Just Angati left to play this turn, correct?

I am not sure, so your call.

Angati what the Succubus was about to do to Alohan... and left what she was doing to run towards Nylaria. She was probably the best prepared to deal with her, being female, and seeing that the woman was so resistant to spells. the decision was clear.

Angati's spiritual weapon wouldn't've done any damage against Nylaria's spiritual ally anyway so let's leave things as they are. The oracle can get into the thick of things next round.

Angati triggers AoO from the ballet girls but they are unable to get through her armour.

I've decided that I'm not going to post until after Ron has had a chance to roll for the save vs blindness since that is a very important (and tough) roll.

The spiritual ally steps forward to make sure it is at a good range to continue whipping Celene, but actually misses! (thanks to mage armour).

Nylaria steps back a few feet and then gestures in the direction of Celene again (she really has it in for you!). Another lightning bolt cracks down and fries Celene, Kassius and Karthack.

OOC: You know the drill. 3d6 damage (roll yourself) and make a DC16 reflex save for half. Karthack fails his save and takes 10 more points of damage.

"Get her! Get the blonde one!" she screams at the ballet dancers. The reluctant girls stream forward.

Then she points at Kibeti and casts a spell, chuckling to herself as she does it.

OOC: Make a DC15 fort save or be blinded Kibeti.

The last maid continues calling to Kassius (DC16 will save Kassius or walk into the pool of NaOH in front of her and take 2d6 points of 'acid' damage).

The dancing girls start leaping at Celene, ignoring the daggers in their hands for the time being and just trying to drag her down in a massive ruck. The sorceress managers to fend them off for the time being. Karthack grabs her by the sleave.

"Come on! Let's retreat into the corridor and close the door while we heal." The old dwarf's hair is on end and scorched in one spot from the two rounds of lightning he's taken.

Meanwhile, the battle is raging between the Whirling Furies and the golems. Fights-with-lightning has unstrung his bow and sends bolt after bold of lightning from it into the side of the savage female construct. The oriental barbarian slices into the porphyry boy with his katana making little impact. Vorsh makes pin-point attacks, focusing on it's calve muscles. Lady Silvermane shoots orbs of pure white light into the eyes of both of the creatures.

...and the lich continues cowering in the corner.

"Come on Hamish! We're dying out here! We need you buddy!" screams Vorsh.

The undead wizard stirs. "Come on Hamish," he mutters to himself. "Pull yourself together man. Come on Hamish!"

The robed skeleton gets to his feet and starts casting his spell... a ninth level spell with meta-magic...

High up above Mystara a chunk of rock the size of Sasserine is pulled from orbit, slowly at first and then with increasing speed it tumbles down out of the heavens. By the time it reaches the 'sky-shield', the magical barrier that stops Mystara's atmosphere from being sucked off into space [1], it is moving at the speed of sound and blasts through that portion of the barrier without even slowing down.

People across Mystara cry out and point to the sky as the meteor flames across the heavens and sheds mass as it burns [2]. Even with the massive mass dissolution, by the time it reaches the northern coast of Davinia where Sasserine is located it is still the size of the opera house. The sonic boom of it coming in over the city blows out every window and makes people out on the street deaf for days - and then it actually impacts.

The blast causes the opera house to simply cease to exist, and every house within a block is vaporised. There is extensive damage to the rest of the Noble District as the shock wave flattens walls and rips up trees.

[1] Well Kassius, how else did you think it worked? Gravity? Pfft!
[2] Yeah, yeah Kassius. I know that real meteors cross the atmosphere in fractions of a second but it is so much more fun if it travels slower so people can actually notice it. Anyway, that is how it happens in the movies.

Down in the basement, under the opera house, the meteor punches down like a missile - right above the head of the golem made of stitched together vaginas. The creature can do no more than look up at the noise before the ceiling collapses and the red hot burning projectile hits it right on the head... and then explodes in the middle of it.

The blast rips the rest of the ceiling of the room down and then a pit opens up all the way from the surface down to the basement. The day's light shines down and reveals a chaotic jumble of grey stone and purple rock with barbarians trapped underneath pieces of it. Every barbarian is covered is red chunks of bleeding raw meat.

Vorsh pushes a block of porphyry off himself and get to his feet, coughing and patting off the dust which covers him from head to toe and whipping at the crimson gore. "Hamish you crazy undead fracker, what did you do?!"

Down the other end of what was the room, the lich climbs to his feet, his green eyes glowing even more fiercely than usual. He looks around the carnage and at the spots where the two contructs previously stood.

"Yeah! How about dem apples? HOW ABOUT DEM APPLES?!" he screams out in bliss as he turns back to Vorsh.

Perhaps it is a blessing that he doesn't see Porphyry Boy throw off the debris covering it and climb to its feet. Perhaps it is just as well that he doesn't hear Vorsh's shouted warning. The golem lifts up his engorged manhood and slams it down on the lich. Hamish McDougall is splattered across the room.

"Ahhh! It's not down! I repeat, Porphyry Boy is not down!" With a groan the Whriling Furies rouse themselves to continue the fight.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Kassius fails to resist the magic, and moves in a daze forward, trying to push past the crowd of dancer's to get to the maid. As distracted as he is, he runs into the mass of women and bounces off ineffectively. As he does so, the lightning bolt flies into him, causing severe pain.
I can't actually move through an enemy's space without making a bull rush or acrobatics. So I'm going to roll a bullrush, I hope that is correct.

Kibeti looks back at Kassius' ineffective bumbling and sighs. Fortunately, the cat's distraction helps shield it from the magic, and he advances on the woman, intent on carrying out his last order, biting and clawing with typical savagery.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

The ballet dancers open ranks as Kassius stumbles through them like a sleepwalker, as per the orders they were given by Nylaria before the battle started. The hunter, mouth agape and with droll dripping out of the corner of it, walks straight into the knee deep pool of concentrated alkali.

OOC: Please take 2d6 points of damage Kassius.

"Oh yes! You are such a good boy!" chirps the maid, who judges that the half-orc is now in the pool by his gasps of pain. She is of course still totally blind and oblivious to the rogue bearing down on her from the other side.

Kibeti rips into Nylaria, raking his claws across her thighs... despite definitely hitting he doesn't even draw blood from her.

OOC: Welcome to DR10/cold iron, suckers!

Logan fells the last maid and Kassius comes to his senses - he finds himself in the middle of a pool of caustic (I8) with his calves slowly dissolving.

Celene steps back (Karthack falls back to make this possible) and sure enough the girls start crowding the doorway. If she can make it to the next round alive she will surely knock many of them out.

Alohan swings at Nylaria the way that he usually does when attacking - wildly. He manages to actually connect with her during the second half of his 'Furry of Blows' but her magically toughened skin makes the blow bounce off.

@Beni, yes, watch out for that dice roller - Ron has been contaminating it.

Angati hits Nylaria with her best shot (maximum damage), but the blow doesn't even make a scratch.

@Kassius, hmm... what are you summoning up?

Kassius climbs out of the pool (7 hp damage) and starts casting a spell. Kibeti misses with all of his attacks.

Celene avoids the worst of the lightning (6 hp damage) and retreats to the corridor where she begins casting a spell. Karthack sighs and heals her again (9 hp - all healed!).

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

As Celene and Karthack move into the corridor, the zombie ballet dancers crowd around the entrance, picking at Celene with their little daggers. One of them hits the sorceress (2 hp damage).

OOC: Please make a concentration check at DC13. A concentration check is d20 + your caster level + your charisma modifier.

The good news is that if Celene manages to launch this spell it is going to be a dozy, with all but one of the dancers now in the area of effect. But managing that is easier said than done considering that the ghostly succubus made of pure force continues to whip her again with its spiked whip (7 hp damage).

OOC: Concentration check at DC18 pls.

Meanwhile, behind Celene, the dwarf Karthack slips a heavy cudgel from his belt and into his hand. "Young mistress, do you believe in second chances? What about redemption," he mutters, repeating Eseriel's earlier words. He says it so softly that it is almost to himself, and the sorceress doesn't mark his words so focused she is on maintaining her spell casting. Karthack raises the club over his head and in line with the cleric of Wee Jas's undefended head.

Out in the room, Nylaria falls back a few more feet and then looks across the cavern, no doubt searching for the young sorceress again in order to zap her with lightning. Celene is hidden from view by the crowding ballet dancers, and Kassius is very clearly cooking up something big, so the diva points a finger at him and focuses for a second... the lightning targets him this time.

OOC: Kassius, 3d6 damage, roll yourself, DC16 reflex save for half damage. Oh, and then make a concentration check please.

OOC: Okay, I will pause here to let Celene make her concentration checks. This is important as it is going to effect the next round a lot.

OOC: Okay, two saves made.

Celene grits her teeth against the onslaught of daggers and whips and somehow keeps herself focused against he pain. The effect of the spell is dramatic as ten of the dancing girls immediately fall over and only two remain standing.

Karthack pushes past Celene and advances on the remaining two girls with his sap. "Let me handle this Mistress Celene. This time we are going to do this right... no needless deaths... <sob> no beautiful little dwarven dancing girls taken from their families forever! <SOB!>" He steps forward and whacks one of the two remaining girls on the head - she falls over unconscious.

OOC: Ha! Totally faked you guys out!

Back in the collapsing pit which was formally the Glyptothek in the House of Porphyry the battle continues to rage. Barbarians from many nations foam at the the mouth and dart in to take viscous attacks against the almost invulnerable statue of the cherub.

The boy-demon reaches out, catches the head of the horse-nomad in his hand... and squeezes. The man's head explodes like a over-ripe cherry tomato. Then the construct jumps forward and traps the finely clad merchant from the Republic of Darokin against the wall with its ass. It rubs victoriously and it is not clear what happens, but when the statue pulls back the man has been reduced to a brown and red smear on the wall.

Here's a map I made last night - I assumed that Celene was going to fail one of her concentration checks so left the dancers on there - there is now only number 12 left.

Note that square C17 is not a valid square for a normal sized character to be in due to it being half wall... You'll have to figure out another way to flank the pretty lady.

OOC: Oh, and the four pools in the south also smell like concentrated chemicals. There is therefore a restriction on the number of characters that can engage Nylaria in melee and you'll need work arounds like: using missile weapons (Kassius) or standing in the pool of caustic and slowly dissolving (Alohan?)

Kassius dodges the worst of the worst of the lightning, keeping his mind focused on the spell. He grits his teeth against the pain, focusing on saying the words of the magic correctly. The persistence pays off, and the spell is successful, summoning two ... over-sized mosquitoes? Kassius grimaces as the two converge on Nymeria. He had encountered Stirges in the jungle before, they were a nasty lot. The succubus might be resistant to normal wounds, but let's see how resistant she was to massive blood loss!

Meanwhile, Kibeti advances and continues to attack. The foe proves illusive at first, but then Kibeti's claws catches her around her pretty throat, clawing deep into vulnerable flesh. Enhanced with holy power, the claw leaves her throat bloody and wounded.

Alohan was momentarily taken aback by the manifestation of two stirges. He geared himself up for a fight but was relieved to witness both dive bombed Nylaria. They must have been Kassius's allies -he had to remind himself that the half-orc commanded forces of nature. Nylaria's positioning against the back wall made it difficult to get at her and with Logan approaching on her other flank, he was at a loss as to how they would get her surrounded.

So, Alohan would do what he did best. "Ya be keepin' me alive as long as possible" he shouted to neighboring Angati before looping around behind her and stepping into the acid.

With the searing flesh came the sensation of pain and, with that pain, came his pele. He billowed out in fury, turning skyward to flex and scream in an almost childish show of emotion. Afterwards, he sloshed forward in the pit, averting his eyes to the best of his ability and casually grasping at air inorder to grople check Nylaria into whatever hold he could muster.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Kassius' summoned creatures swoop in and attack Nylaria, but she fends them off easily. (her touch AC is pretty good).

Kibeti advances to the edge of the pool and nicks her throat with an attack. Nylaria springs back, thoroughly surprised by the tiny smear of blood on her hand after she brings it back from her neck. (1 hp damage after DR). "What? You'll pay for that little pussy cat!"

OOC: Waa-hoo! First blood to the cat. Of course at this rate you'll all be dead before finishing the job.

Celene moves into the middle of the room, setting herself up for some super spell next round.

Alohan high steps into another pool - this time willingly, but the NaOH make his hands slippery and he is unable to initiate a grapple.

Logan slips into position from the side and attacks - he bumbles his strokes and misses totally. If only someone could help him by providing flanking...

21:36, Today: Dungeon Master rolled 24,10 using 1d20+9,1d8+2.  Spiritual weapon Attack & Damage.

OOC: And I checked... this bypasses her damage reduction...

Angati focuses on using her spiritual hammer and meets with success! She clops Nylaria on the side of the head with a blow that sends her spinning! (10 hp damage) She then squeezes into the gap between Kibeti and the wall (there's your flanking Logan).

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Nylaria keeps her cool and starts casting another spell - a tricky one by the looks of it as it is taking a long time to cast.

OOC: She tries to cast it defensively, DC23.

21:42, Today: Dungeon Master rolled 24 using 1d20+19.  Casting spell defensively.

Despite attacks raining in from all sides, she casts the spell without triggering attacks from those nearby.

The single remaining ballet dancer screams and running after Celene, her dagger raised high in the air. The sorceress nimbly side-steps the strike. The vicious lash from the ghostly succubus is another question - it hits Celene across the back and when the creature jerks the barbs out they tear her flesh (7 hp damage).

The Whirling Furies begin to make some headway on the massive construct in the other room. The diminutive Halfling closes his eyes in concentration and then millions of small biting insects start pulling themselves out of the loose soil around the side of the pit and then crawl in one churning mass onto the outside of the porphyry statue. The golem actually sinks to its knees as it is distracted with swatting the stinging bugs off. Unfortunately one of its swipes catch the trident welding 'Flash' unawares and the man's face is caved in.

Whirling Furies Remaining: 5/12

With Nylaria now completely distracted, Logan smiles and aims his weapons for her vulnerable back...her beautiful, smooth, enticing back.  Without meaning to, Logan finds his eyes slipping, and he takes in Nylaria's new form in all its glory.  As his sight fades, Logan yells and swings, one of his weapons managing to just connect.  Then the rogue falls back, trying to locate his foe again by hearing.

Angati's ghostly hammer strikes Nylaria in the face gain (8 hp), but the spell is a flop.

OOC: As Nylaria's will save is +16 she instantly makes the save.

Interesting question about whether or not making he 'aged' would remove her blinding beauty power. Can old people be beautiful?...

In regards to saving throws.

SRD:
Automatic Failures and Successes

A natural 1 (the d20 comes up 1) on a saving throw is always a failure (and may cause damage to exposed items; see Items Surviving after a Saving Throw). A natural 20 (the d20 comes up 20) is always a success.

Did you notice that Kibeti had critted? I think it should be 13 damage, not 1.

Kibeti continues to press the attack, his enhanced claws capable of doing at least some damage against the foe's resistant skin. The stirges attack as well, and one of them manages to latch on, beginning to drain blood.

Kassius meanwhile tries to enhance his strength, in order to do draw the bow with enough strength to do meaningful damage. The magically enhanced bow lengthens slightly to take advantage of its owner's new strategy, but unfortunately Kassius' accuracy doesn't match his strength, and the arrows miss.

Something had happened to Nylaria. ALohan could HEAR where she was. He didnt need to see. Furthermore, the appearance of his friends allowed him to 'frame' where she was positioned. The acid had continud to sear his flesh and part of him hoped it wouldn't leave ever lasting marks but there were more things to focus on. Like killing the demon whore.

Alohan lunged forward and grabbed the succubus by the legs, pulling them out from under her. As she fell, he began to pull her, hoping to submege her in the caustic fluid he was currently standing in.

Kibeti tries his best, but can't break through Nylaria's defence.

One of the stirges latches on and begins to drain blood. Nylaria squeals and tries to fling it off (will roll for that during her turn).

Kassius misses.

Alohan Nuari:
I DID IT GUYS! I ROLLED ABOVE 10!

OOC: Waa-hoo Ron! I knew you had it in you!

Alohan graps the diva's legs and starts dragging her down into the stinging pool. She doesn't take damage from his rough handling ('raging grapple') though.

OOC: You both get the grappled condition.

Just Celene left in this round. What'ch got planned? Grease? Seems like there is little point now since Alohan has initiated a grapple...

Logan may be blinded, but he is still deadly. His skillful blades slip into Nylaria side using a move that Vorsh taught him during his recent training and the succubus wails and looses concentration on her spell of summoning. The players will never know how close they came to death.

Karthack creeps up behind the last ballet dancer, the one who was manically stalking Celene, and fells her with a quick blow to the back of her head with his sap.

She points a finger at the sorceress and a bolt of lightning comes crashing down on the young woman. Then the ghostly succubus moves in to finish her off - the sorceress feels the lash across her back again, but it seems to hurt less than before (3 hp - min damage).

OOC: Usual story with the lightning, 3d6 damage, DC16 reflex save for half.

Okay, ignore the red 1 & 2 which were the summoned demons.

Another Whirling Fury is crushed by the stone golem, and the remaining fighters are pushed to the edge of the room where the corridor leads into the caustic pool cavern that the party are fighting in. Fights-with-lighting casts more and more lightning bolts from his bow until his fingers are nearly burning, but then some of the insects crawling on the golem spill onto him. The native archer dies horribly.

"Flin you idiot! Keep the insects on that beast, not us!" screams Vorsh.

THe halfing druid swallows hard, nods and tries to refocus his spell on the massive statue. There are now only Lady Silverman, Vorsh and Master Flin left.

OOC: Okay, so a change of plans here.

Nylaria DOES still break out of Alohan's grapple, but the stirge stays attached and can start blood sucking next round. Nylaria does NOT use lightning against Celene as she uses her standard action to break Alohan's grapple. Celene still gets hit by the spiritual ally.

That is all. Take it away guys!

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

To be fair, Logan has no reason to believe that it's permanent and not a round/level type thing

Kassius glances back at the conflict in the other room, and curses under his breath. Their allies seemed to be losing, and their group needed to take out Nylaria fast. Hopefully her death would stop the obscene golems. Kassius grimly keeps firing, but Nylaria is still too fast for him to land a shot.

The unattached stirge continues to be unable to find a purchase, but the first one continues sucking more blood, beginning to cause visible weakness.

Dungeon Master:
...the stirge stays attached and can start blood sucking next round.

Stirges actually start draining con at the end of any turn in which they are grappled, so started last round. Nylaria has now lost 2 con, so loses HP equal to her HD

Kibeti continues to attack and draws blood, although the demon's speed and resistance makes it hard to land a truly solid blow.

It was rare that his enemies would be able to slip out of his grip -it did not happen all too often. When the demon succubus lurched out, Alohan was caught staring at her naked glory. Unfortunately, he paused in his tracks and suffered the catastrophic loss of his eyesight. Panicking, Alohan sloshed about in the acidic pool unable to locate both friend or foe. Things looked grim at any moment that statue would lumber into the room and start killing her friends. The diva looks down at her midriff at the spot where Celene hit with her tiny force bolt, observing how a flood of crimson ready is spreading beneath her skin. "Oh you have got to be kidding me..." she mutters. She coughs and her lips splatter with red blood.

"I will see you in the Abyss... <coughs up blood> you <wobbles unsteadily on her feet> fat <bubbles of foaming blood form on her mouth> cow <pitches face force into the pool of caustic almost landing on Alohan who jumps back in shock>"

Celene watches the Nylaria pitch forward and some kind of grim satisfaction make her want to watch the women dissolve into nothingness. Instead she turns and runs for the corridor leading to the room with the statue and the Whirling Furies. She looks out hoping to see the cocksure golem standing motionless now that its master has died. Her mind does wonder if she'd need to try and take control of the temple, as Nylaria did from Eseriel, in order to call the golem off.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene arrives in time to see the huge purple golem advances on the three remaining Whirling Furies - having expended their most powerful magics they are defenceless against it.

"I look forward to meeting you both in the Court of Stars in Arborea," says Lady Silvermane. Her voice is sombre, almost a chant. "We will feast together and boast of this battle."

"I want to go home!" whimpers the Halfling druid Master Flin.

"Ahhh! I didn't spend fifty years planning and then successfully carrying out revenge against a cabal of evil weapons just to be squished by a golem's baby-maker the week after!" screams Vorsh. "Cover me you frak-heads!"

The holly avenger charges into the free, the startled druid and cleric struggling to respond to his instructions. The man once known to Sasserine as Sire Larcos Dengrin yells a battle cry and rolls under the creatures guard, swoops up and connects with a massive two handed swing with his mithral rapier on the base of the porphyry statue's penis. The blow connects exactly with a tiny structural weakness deep in the middle of the stone and with a loud *crack* the creature's manhood woobles... and then falls off.

The golem stares in disbelief its missing appendage, its soundless mouth mouthing the words "Oh fraaaac..."

"Heh. Yeah. That's got-ta sting, huh buddy?" chuckles Vorsh.

The golem shudders, the centre of all its power gone, then with a violent shake the creature rips apart from the inside and falls to the ground into pile of shattered purple fragments.

His anger spent, Logan listens as someone goes dashing off to the north, realizing he isn't hearing the bass-like booms that accompany the fall of the massive golem's member anymore.  "Will someone tell me what's fracking happening?  Did we win?  Are any of the Whirling Furies still alive?  I need them to tell me what happened to my dad!"

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Cracks start to appear along the walls of the underground complex - it appears that the massive structural damage that was done by the meteor strike has weakened more than just the room where it hit. The party's time in this area is now limited by how long the roof stays up and also by the fact that they'd better gone by the time the authorities arrive.

Lady Silvermane and Vorsh walk back with Celene to the room with the caustic pools. Nylaria' body is slowly bubbling away as it drifts around the pool into which she fell. Alohan has gotten out of the pool and is wandering around with his hands outstretched, Logan has just realized that he is permanently blind and is mouthing off about it.

The cleric of Gwynharwyf heals all of the party members of their normal wounds, but says she doesn't have the proper spells to fix the barbarian and rogue right now. She does offer to pray for the appropriate spells tomorrow.

Vorsh pokes at Nylaria's body with his boot to make sure she is dead, then spits on her. "Good frakken riddence," he mutters.

OOC: The party's performance has been assessed and the appraisal result is:

Underperformance/Further Training Required

I have also sat down and calculated the treasure award. This hinges on the "Dick Joke Modifier" (DJM) which players scored points on during the game. These are the results:

PLAYER    BASE        DJM         RESULT       NOTES
Celene    1,000 gp    4           4,000 gp     Good quality and quantity
Kassius   1,000 gp    3           3,000 gp     Only one joke but pretty funny
Logan     1,000 gp    2           2,000 gp     Can't remember
Angati    1,000 gp    1           1,000 gp     Well at least he tried
Alohan    1,000 gp    0           0 gp         Antagonized the DM

As the party runs out of the dungeon they grab whatever freestanding items that look like they might be valuable. The totals above reflect the value of what they randomly grab.

KA-BOOM! And he lands a killer combo!

But unfortunately the scoring period is closed and this has no effect on your DJM.

But seriously, I am just going to pool the treasure and then stick it into the loot thread - you can't spend it yet though as we need to resolve the other thread which is actually in the past.

Re: 2.7 - Celene and the House of Porphyry

Celene had mixed emotions. Everything she had worked for had just come crumbling down around her in a couple weeks’ time. Her mentor had been revealed as a villain then subsequently died by her own hand. Celene still feared that she and Alohan would be blamed for her death. She no longer belonged in the temple; her only recourse would be to live with Angati in the caves that once house the Lotus Dragons. What she needed something to occupy her mind; she made a decision on the spot to find Urol and attempt to learn about alchemy. If nothing else, it would distract her.

Celene approached Logan ”Three of them survived. Vorsh a woman and a Halfling.” she said as she drew the rogue’s arm around her shoulders to help him along. The rubble from the statue and the general state of the room after the meteor strike would make navigating it difficult without help. She looked to the others ”Let’s grab what we can and get clear of this place.” she said with scorn.

Everything on him had hurt -the acid did a number to his legs and Nylaria's breasts still hovered in his mind's eye. The last thing he would see, a pair of demon tits. Still, they had done the city a service, even if it cost the lives of many whirling furies.

"Doin' de right ding is too much work. How are de dancers? De alright?" he asked as he was lead out of the temple.

Umm, well... I sort of made that bit up.

Actually, as I mentioned, the module had some very serious adult content in it that I didn't feel comfortable with so I ran the 'Benny Hill' version of it. Having a 'shlung measuring contest' at the end of at all seemed very appropriate.

Angati:

The module was pretty far out there Beni. Actually, it was that Dungeon issue plus the 'Book of Vile Darkness' that made Tracy Hickman declare that 'they've killed D&D'. There were a lot of people pretty upset about it. But no twat jokes, no, it took itself much more seriously than that.

Alohan Nuari:
"Doin' de right ding is too much work. How are de dancers? De alright?" he asked as he was lead out of the temple.

OOC: Oh, damn, I totally forgot about them!

Thanks to Celene's cunning use of a sleep spell and Karthack's gentle use of his sap, 11 out of the 12 dancers are groggy but unharmed. Only the one that Angati punched in the face with her spiritual gauntlet (in round one) is seriously hurt, but she will live. The party wakes them up and helps them to the surface.

The townsfolk of Sasserine are already gathering from the surrounding area, coming to see if they can help or maybe just to find out what happened. They are distraught to see the damage that has been done to their beautiful city - until they figure out that it is just the opera house that has been destroyed and then most of them are just... meh.

It is a simple enough matter to climb up the huge crater that the meteor hit created. Fingers are pointed and hushed whispers begin as the party and the remaining whirling furies arrive on the surface. Perhaps the stern visage of Vorsh is even recognized since he is technically still on Sasserine's most wanted list.

The party disappears into the night - Logan and Alohan still being led by the others - and they return to the Dragon Lotus lair to rest.

At dawn the next day they head over to the Church of the Whirling Fury and Lady Silvermane has prayed for the appropriate spells to return their sight to them. The 'church' is now a very forlorn place. Without any barbarians left it is quiet and lifeless - even the halfling druid 'Master Flin' left in the night meaning that Vorsh and the cleric are alone there. But the two lads get their sight back, so that is the main thing.

Celene learns that she is now a wanted woman - there is a 5,000 gp price on her head. Perhaps she would be able to clear up matters, but the instructions are 'kill on sight' due to the level of Celene's 'crimes', namely the murder of Magnus Eseriel, unauthorised spellcasting within the temple, summoning a meteor inside the city limits, and lying to the High Magus.

OOC: Yeah, 5,000 gp. Exactly the amount that you wrangled out of your DM when you robbed your old mentor. Karma is a bitch, huh? :D :P

Unable to go back to the temple, the young sorceress has a choice between shacking up with Angati and Logan in the old Dragon Lotus den or perhaps asking for refuge with the Whirling Furies - they certainly have enough space now.

The one piece of good news is that she does manage to track down Urol. The old gnome naturalist is more than happy to teach her the ins and outs of alchemy so she can begin to incorporate its powers into her spell casting. Celene is soon off to a flying, or rather, explosive start, and quickly learns the basics. It is actually less difficult than she imagined and the major problem she has is avoiding Urol's wandering hands...
