3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

As the city slips around the bend to the stern, the voyage to the Isle of Dread really begins. Lavinia has chosen the best time of the year to brace the Sea of Dread, and the weather as they begin their trip is pleasant.

As dusk falls at the end of the first day, the Blue Nixie hoists a flag to indicate that they want to send a message over by rowboat. The Sea Wyvern shortens its sails and the message arrives - Captain Aloha, the party and the other 'VIP's' on the ship are invited to dinner in Lavinia's wardroom!

The two ships are brought close and a line thrown across between them. A pulley is mounted on it and a net seat is hoisted to allow for safe crossing between the two ships.

Lavinia looks very fine when she meets them, dressed in a silk shirt, jewellery and a dress. She leads the guests into the galley; this is a bit bigger on the Blue Nixie than on the Sea Wyvern; and a spread that even Kora Whistlegap would be proud of is spread out across the table including grouse, peacock and elven wine.

OOC: Okay, this is in the module so there is a compulsory one roleplaying post minimum here. I don't like it anymore than you do, but the rules are the rules. The people at the dinner are:

Alohan and the party
Lavinia
Avner
Amella
Father Feres
Urol
Captain Rodrigo (of the Blue Nixie)

Celene took her seat and laid her hands daintily in her lap. She turned her attention to Lavinia. ”Lavinia; Urol has been teaching me quite a bit about alchemy. I am sure in one lesson he taught me an unguent that was particularly effective in removing barnacles and other hangers-on. We might be able to work something up for you if you have the need.” she said primly and without any hint of a smile. The sorcereress then plucked a piece of peacock with her fork and chewed quietly.

Logan is halfway through a glass of wine when Celene makes her comment, and barely manages to cover his laughter as a fit of coughing. Finally recovered, he bides his time sampling some of the food before clearing his throat. "Urol?. The rogue looks suspiciously at the red-eyed alchemist who is gazing in rapt wonder at the food, obviously enjoying the simple act of eating everything that crosses his plate. "He stopped smoking loco weed long enough to teach you something?

Logan selects another piece of meat and chews it slowly before addressing their host. "I certainly wasn't expecting eating like this. I also pictured sailors eating...I don't know, salted meat and stale bread. I'm glad you don't feel the need to fit in in that regard. Speaking of fitting in, how'd you manage to find those fighting clothes you were wearing?  I can't imagine your usual clothing suppliers stock those kinds of things."

Lavinia, blessedly free from Avner for a second while the nobleman argues with Lavnia's chef over the wine, raises an eyebrow and can't stop a small smirk forming on her face. She glances back at her fiance and makes sure he is occupied, then turns back to Celene.

"Yes, that is all well and good Celene, but what I am particularly interest in is the next step - PERMANENT DISPOSAL of the aforementioned parasite."

Logan:

It is the first mate of the Sea Wyvern who answers. "Ya, matey. Salted meat and stale bread is exactly what you will be getting after tonight. On the first day out is it possible to make dinner a little special, but after that we are into the hard grind."

3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

"What the frac!" screams Lavinia, pulling back in surprise and outrage.

*CRACK!*

Avner's head snaps back as Alohan's fist connects with the bottom Young Master Meravanchi's jaw. The nobleman is flung back in his seat, which tips over, and the back of his head connects with the wall of the cabin. "Ahhh! Ggggg!" screams Avner, trying to clasp at the various different damaged places on his head and face.

"YOU NOT BE TREATING DIS WOMAN DIS WAY," roars the barbarian as his rises to his feet and flings back his own seat.

"What! You... you... miserable little COCONUT!" screams Avner, suddenly quite a bit more sober. "I will have you flogged at the post for this!"

"You... you... miserable little FRAC!" says Lavinia with surprising calmness. "The only one going to be flogged is you!"

Avener stares at her, totally stunned by her words. "It's off! It's all off. Turn this pathetic little dingy around, my family calls in its investments. You are ruined Lavnia. Ruined! You'll end up selling your body in the Velvet Hatch. You end up..." His words are cut off short as he has to dance around the table to avoid Alohan.

OOC: Hmm, it wasn't my intention to go this direction so early in the voyage, but Logan's question sort of trigged it. Any comments?

"Avner was it. You seem to be forgetting one key point. You're here, all alone on this ship, and there's a whole lot of us. I'd recommend you sit down, shut up, and stay out of everyone's way for the trip, and maybe, we won't throw you out with the rest of the bilge."
He grins at the end, half-orc fangs visible.

"Aunt? What Aunt? What are you talking about you crazy b..." he looks around and doesn't see a single friendly face among those starting down at him, just like Kassius said, and swallows hard. He closes his mouth and and folds his arms across his chest, and returns the hard stares with a furious glower.

Lavinia is one of those providing the hard looks. She shakes her head angrily and then barks, "Get him out of here," at one of the sailors in the room. Avner is hoisted up, and quickly manhandled out of the cabin.

"Oh no, oh no, oh no!" sobs Lavinia, once he is gone. "We can't go back. He will make good on his threat you know, and if the Meravanchis call in their debts I am done for. Not that I mind living without money," she says, looking at Alohan. "But everything my parents worked for. Their legacy. I have destroyed it all in a couple of months!"

Alohan puts his arm around her, but seems at a loss for what to say. She does have a point after all. Even if they just drop Avner off on the coast line and then continue sailing, once the young bachelor gets back to Sasserine the Meravanchis could launch their fleet of ships and track them down easily enough since they know the direction they are going.

3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

"Well... it all comes down to two things..." said Angati trying to think quickly. "First is, exactly... and I mean exactly, how did you word your agreement with them ?... depending on this we can probably work up a whole in the contract... Also... the second piece of information is how far are we willing to go on this ?. I do not want to kill the man but... there are different things that we need to consider".

She paused again "First... find out all about the people travelling with him. Who are they ? what can they do ?. Secondly find out all that he is carrying... does he have any magical objects or anything that allows him to communicate with his family ?. I'd surely take on this step, if he cannot communicate, then we have the upper hand, if he does... we may not. So, let's block this if we can... take him somewhere else, and we make a search of his luggage and things, and next time he comes I'll have a magic detection ready to see what he carries..."

"In any case Lavinia, there will be a price to pay, because to make this trip bearable, we will be touching him in his pride, and I think that even if his family might be able to forgive if we make them rich... he will not forgive our slights to him... so... just how much do you want to take on him ?"

"I don't know, I don't know!" sobs Lavinia. Alohan tightens his grasp on her a little.

"Der is no need to be figuring dis all out tonight. Come. I will take dis scoundrel back to de Sea Wyvern, and you take a good night's rest."

Lavinia agrees, and the party sets about returning to their own ship. Avner is thoroughly searched, with much protests from the young man, and then bound. None of his possessions look like magical communication device and he his no weapons other than a small knife.

They get to the rope basket that is riding on a pulley between the two vessels and Alohan indicates that he wants to go across first in order to set up a proper reception for their new prisoner.

"Lavinia. You not be worried about dis. I be sorting dis out. I give you de word." With that he launches himself out across the waves of the dark ocean, with only the silvery light of a waning crescent moon lighting the space between the boats.

About halfway across the rope snaps.

Lavinia screams in terror, but the barbarian resurfaces a second later, his face showing an expression more of anger than fear at the situation... until he sees the fin cutting through the water and bearing down on him. The native screams and lashes out with a fist, slamming it into the shark's eye socket and momentarily driving it off (shark rolled a nat 1).

He doesn't see the second shark as it bite's down on his leg, and the barbarian is pulled beneath the waves for a second, taking in a gulp of water. A third shark nips at his side. OOC: 19 hp damage in total. It seems that these creatures are almost playing with him, enjoying his distress and helplessness.

OOC: The sharks and Alohan are in dim light and have concealment. 20% miss chance in combat, please roll for this yourself. Map is incoming.

I am so embarrassed to post this after seeing Ron's beautiful maps in Buried Contempt, but we will just have to survive. The Sea Wyvern is on the left, the Blue Nixie is on the right. I haven't bothered with grid reference for this combat, so just describe your movements in relative terms. I also haven't marked on the NPC's since most of them are unable to contribute in this combat.

N = Alohan Nuari (Barbarian/Monk)
A = Angati (Oracle)
M = Kinstal Minare (Fighter)
C = Celene (Sorceress)¨
L = Logan (Rogue)
K = Kassius (Hunter)
k = Kibeti (Animal Companion)
Red 1, 2 & 3 are the sharks

As the sharks are in the water, in addition to concealment (20% miss chance), they also have improved cover (+8 bonus to AC, +4 bonus on Reflex saves).

Celene moved to the edge of the boat keeping calm considering the situation. There wasn't a penis trying to scuttle the boats; so things could be worse. She called upon the burning fire within and she cast out a spell towards the surf. The water seems to slow down for a moment before crashing back to its normal speed.

Free :  | Swft :  | Move : To edge of boat | Stnd : Cast Slow | Full :

Casting slow to effect all sharks. DC 18 Will Save.

Slow:
Creatures affected by this spell are staggered and can take only a single move action or standard action each turn, but not both (nor may it take full-round actions). Additionally, it takes a –1 penalty on attack rolls, AC, and Reflex saves. A slowed creature moves at half its normal speed (round down to the next 5-foot increment), which affects the creature's jumping distance as normal for decreased speed.

Hopefully this allows Alohan to move to the boat and climb up without getting attacked.

Logan's mood went from wary relief at the outcome of the "Avner Situation" to panic as the rope snapped and the hungry sharks attacked.  Having spent enough time in Shadowshore to see the kind of justice often dealt out to failing gang members at the hands of the hungry monsters of the sea, Logan had a healthy respect for the giant aquatic carnivores.  More than enough to jump in the water, at least.  He pulled out his bow and carefully aimed, letting an arrow fly.  Although he could see the sharks, he completely messed up the actual shot.

Sadly, I believe Shark 2 is more than 30 ft away from Angati, so she can't misfortune it.
Kassius is surprised to see shark's immediately go after the man. He's more of an expert on land animals, but even apex predators on land won't usually attack a human without cause.

17:55, Today: Kassius rolled 13 using 1d20+6. knowledge (nature): sharks!

Upon seeing a threat, Kassius instinctively reaches for his bow and quiver, but hesitates. The lighting is poor, and the bulk of the shark's body is protected by the crashing waves, something Logan's miss makes only to obvious. Celene's attempt at using magic to slow the foe down and give Alohan time to escape is clearly the correct one. Instead of fully drawing the quiver, Kassius turns the motion into the beginning of a spell, hoping to summon some creatures more suited to underwater combat.

Man overboard!  Sharks in the water!

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Logan misses by miles.

@Kassius, yes, shark #2 is 45' away even when Angati is at the very edge of the Blue Nixie so you are right - shark #2 is therefore not slowed.

Kassius doesn't know that much about sharks, although just like Logan he has occasionally seen smaller specimens swimming in Sasserine's waterways, especially during his time spent dredging the canals. He has never seen sharks anywhere near this size before though.

He realizes that these musth be the great white sharks of the open ocean, the legendary apex carnivores that dominate the top of the food chain out here in the Isle of Dread.

Yes, it is strange that they would randomly attack a human. People don't look or act like the great white sharks normal food and these creatures therefore normally only attack men when they confuse them with prey fish or they are in a feeding frenzy.

It is Kibeti who spots the oily trail of blood and meat parts that lead away from the Sea Wyvern. The cat growls at the metal copper smell - a lot of raw meat has been thrown overboard and this must be what attracted these killers of the sea.

Kinstal sounds the alarm and searches for a rope to throw to Alohan. Skald, the pale faced bosun, and Lirith come charging up from below decks. They quickly take in the threshing white water and the mortal combat that Alohan is in.

"Swim, swim skipper, swim!" screams Skald.

"No! Play dead," screams Lirith. "They only eat live prey. They won't touch you if you just float there!"

Kinstal finds a rope and can throw it overboard next round.

OOC: Just Angati to go I think.

She flicked her gaze upwards toward the shark that was moving at a normal pace and one by one the motes of energy zipped towards the sharks sleek form hitting home regardless of the water in their way.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Alohan reaches the rope and starts to climb, but only gets his chest out of the water before one of the great whites in on him. He kicks out desperately, deflects the beast, and spins in a small loop on the rope. Before he can start climbing again the next shark is snapping at him and he has to lift his knees high in order to keep the 'Royal Eel' out of the water.

The sea churns as Angati's sharks and whatever critters that Kassius summons are added into the mix, then Celene's magical motes make the sea boil. The respite gives Alohan a chance to tighten his grip on the rope, and the next second he is being hoisted on board as Kinstal and Skald pull him up, hand over hand. The captain is ungracefully pulled over the gunnel by his loin cloth and then collapse on the deck like a landed fish, big gulping coughs clearing out the salt water from his lungs.

Those on board the Blue Nixie continue to watch the combat, but it turns out to be disappointing. A few seconds later the sharks seem to have been scared off as they disappear from view.

"You... <cough, cough> saved me dere hoaaloha," says Alohan gravely to Kinstal and Skald. "I not be forgetting dat, I promise you."

Logan breathes a sigh of relief as Alohan is pulled back onto a boat - manhood and all.

Then the rogue glowers and points at the trail of meat that Kibeti spotted.  "That was either sheer incompetence or a plot to attract the sharks."

The rogue moves over to grab one end of the line that broke, casting Alohan into the water.  "I bet this rope was tampered with as well."

The rogue starts pulling the line ashore, eager to check the spot where it broke.

Logan pulls in one end of the rope onto the Blue Nixie. Sure enough, the break point is not frayed, it has been cut most of the way across with something sharp.

The Blue Nixie and the Sea Wyvern are maneuverered next to each other so that it is possible to walk between them.

It is then possible to track the trail of blood and guts back to its source... a porthole near the stern of the ship.

OOC: Avner's still standing right next to us on the boat, right?  Alohan went across first, and the rope snapped with him.  Avner's not the person who "pulled the trigger."  It's probably not related to Avner, honestly, because I don't think he had a way of telling a compatriot on the other boat that everything had gone south, nor did he know who would be going across first.  I think this is more general sabotage and not actually related to the Avner thing.  Or at least not directly related to what just happened at dinner.

Logan:
OOC: Avner's still standing right next to us on the boat, right?  Alohan went across first, and the rope snapped with him.

OOC: This is exactly right, after Avner was taken out of the captain's quarters / dinning room on the Blue Nixie he was just held on deck while the rest of you stayed in the cabin and discussed what to do. Then Alohan was the first one to try and get over on the rope. Avner was in full view of the entire party when the rope broke and was at the party before that - it seems unliekly that .

Angati:
Angati examined the rope and the trail... "From which ship was this rope thrown ?..."

OOC: Thrown? you mean cut? It was cut at the Sea Wyvern end, close to the point where the rope went over the edge of the ship.

Angati:
...and out of what ship is the trail of food coming ?...

OOC: It was coming from a porthole in the stern of the Sea Wyvern.

Angati:
"You are going to sport some nice shark wounds... this one even shows each of the teeth mark... hey wait ... she said smiling... I am sure this must be good look charm or something". She said pulling out a shark tooth that had remained dug in Alohan's skin and handing it to him.

Alohan chuckles, some colour returning to his face. "I be thanking you for dis, Angati. You are a good friend."

He grabs hold of the gunnel and pulls himself up onto his feet, then he gazes out across the moonlit ocean. The bloody trial is still visible. "I would like to know why the sea was being soaked in de blood," he mutters. "Der be a rascal on board, dis is clear at least."

Kassius:
"Whether it's that rascal or a saboteur, we need to find out. Let's see if we can figure out who was near that porthole."

Just as Kassius finishes speaking the porthole above the offending trial of blood opens, revealing the lit interior of a cabin. A small stream of guts is thrown out the window, then the porthole is slammed shut again.

Without hesitation, the party sprint down to the hold and head through the main bunkroom to the stern of the ship. This leads them to the last cabin in the vessel... the galley. When the door is flung open a scene from a slaughter house is revealed.

Two gutted pigs lie spread open on the table, their innards spilling out onto the floor. It looks like they have been recently gutted, rather inexpertly judges Kassius, and their internal organs ripped out. The cook, Shefton Rosk, stands at the other side of the table cheerfully whistling and scooping the lower intestine of one of the pigs into a wooden bucket.

"Ahoy there!<b> he says cheerfully as they burst in. <b>"Did the party finish early over on the 'nixie? Ha! Let me guess, the food was rubbish, right? Well I am cooking up a feast in here, although you're a bit early. I'm not gunna have these two done until dinner tomorrow." Blood trickles down ou of the bucket onto the deck of the galley.

As Kinstal stays above deck, he catches the little drama that plays out there.

Amella, the first mate, walks over to the end of the broken rope that is hanging over the side of the Sea Wyvern (since it was the other end that Logan inspected, the end of the Blue Nixie) and pulls it up. Once she has the broken end in hand she checks it carefully, then finally mutters something to herself. She turns and faces the crew who are now on deck.

"Mister Skald! Front and centre please!"

The pale skinned half-elf raises and eyebrow, but makes no comment as he walk to a spot in front of her and stands... well, not at attention since this is not the navy... but at least at alertness.

"MISTER SKALD!" bellows the first mate. "ARE YOU OR ARE YOU NOT AWARE OF WHO HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY ON BOARD THIS VESSEL FOR THE CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF ROPES?"

The lean sailor seems a little taken aback, but answers her question quickly enough.

"That is the bosun, ma'am. That would be me."

"MISTER SKALD! CAN YOU THEREFORE EXPLAIN HOW THIS ROPE CAME TO BE SEVERED AND HENCEWHIST DROPPED OUR GOOD SKIPPER INTO AN OCEAN OF MAN EATING SHARKS?"

A frown appears on the bosun face. "I checked all of the ropes before we left port ma'am. I remember it clearly that..."

"THIS ROPE HAS BEEN DAMAGED BOSUN SKALD! THIS INDICATES NEGLET AT THE VERY MINIMUM. PERHAPS HAVING A WEEK'S PAY DOCKED WILL HELP YOU REMEMBER." Amella puts up her hand to stop Skald's rebuttal. "TAKE THIS MISERABLE ROPE AND YOUR MISERABLE SELF OUT OF MY SIGHT BEFORE I GET SICK."

Skald finally gains some colour in his cheeks - the flash crimson as he walks past her to gather up the rope with a furious look on his face. He heaves the wound rope over his shoulder and walks towards the stairs leading below decks muttering to himself.

"I checked the damn ropes..."

"...checked it again just before it was strung across..."

"...that end was cut...must have been done just now..."

"...only one on deck was..."

Skald seems to figure something out and looks at Kinstal, a deep scowl growing on his face. Indeed, the burly fighter had been the only one on deck during the party since he'd had the watch.

The half-elf 'accidentally' lowers his shoulder into Kinstal as he walks past. The impact doesn't make any impact on the seventy-five hit point warrior, and the sailor merely ricochets off, almost pushing him off balance. Skald's scowl deepens.

"Whaa?" is the only response from the reformed Lotus Dragon thief. When the recent event involving the captain and sharks are explained to him he looks horrified.

"My... by the gods! Skipper I am so sorry! I had no idea. But, I mean... where else should I throw the slops? It's not like I can bag them up until we reach the Isle of Dread after all, is it?"

Celene:

OOC: Well you're easily convinced. Great!

As the party turn to go, Shefton continues his heartfelt apologies despite Alohan saying it was nothing to worry about and no harm had been done.

Just before he leaves the room, Logan realises where he has seen those pigs before - they are two of his prize breeding pigs that he bought to make a profit on trading! (You just lost 5% of your investment). Shefton sees the look of understanding flash across Logan's face and nods, his fingers dancing as they spell out a message in Thieves' Cant - no doubt a heartfelt apology to the Shadowshore rogue.

The party decide that there isn't much more to be done to track down the saboteur - if indeed that was what happened and it wasn't just Skald's sloppy maintenance of the rope that was the cause. There is one significant result of the incident though. Alohan doesn't through Avner out of the captain's quarters. The barbarian is actually thankful to be in the forwards bunkroom with some of his old friends (Logan, Kassius and Kibeti are also bunking in there) watching each other's backs.

A week of smooth sailing passes with fair weather and pleasant winds. Kinstal finds a quiet moment when Skald has calmed down a bit and questions him (see other thread). The journey passes pretty much as per plan until day eight.

Shefton Rosk comes on deck one morning holding a bucket of water. "Ugh! Taste it! It's turned in pure filth!" It turns out that the water has been drawn from one of the barrels carrying the Sea Wyvern's water supply and it has turned foul. Shefton reports that ALL of the barreled water that they purchased in Sasserine just over a week ago is no longer drinkable.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Angati, of course, has not been wasting the last week and has used that time to spread her charm around the other people on board the vessel. At first it is hard going - Skald just refuses to talk to her, and the other sailors seem tight lipped as well since she is a friend of the captain's and they assume that whatever they tell her will get back to him. The ship's cook is the only exception - he happily tells stories about his colleagues.

She makes break through when she realizes that one of her old acquaintances from the shrine of 'Love and Beauty' is on board. Old sister Agnes (yes, the NPC mentioned in the first post of the first Angati thread) is on board, although the old lady doesn't recognize Angati at all. Apparently the shriveled old woman is on the way to Farshore to serve as the new clerk in the hall of records out there. The old busybody is full of information on everbody on board and very happy to tell all what she knows.

LEADS
- Shefton Rosk (the cook) has noticed that there are some dates missing from the ship's stores. Dates are a very expensive, so this is no laughing matter, and he'd been saving them to make a fancy desert for Mistress Celene! Shefton has seen Logan hanging around the stores a couple of times and thinks that it might be him who is stealing them.
- Shefton Rosk says that he has seen Skald having nightmares when he sleeps.
- Sister Agnes has noticed that one of the female passengers who claims to be sailing to Farshore to work as a fishmonger only has 'fancy lady' clothes with her.
- Sister Agnes has noticed that Lirith is spending a lot of time around Avner.
- Sister Agnes has noticed that the cabin boy Tavey Nash is spending a lot of time in solitude with the first mate Amella. It just doesn't seem proper!
- Sister Agnes has noticed that one of the sailors, namely Kinstal, spends an inordinate amount of time in the head. Why does he spend so long in there!
- Amelia thinks that someone has smuggled Zzonga powder on board - a lot of the colonists seems dazed and confused.
- No leads on Lirith. If she did smuggle something on board she is doing a good job of hiding it.

OOC: Any character can peruse any lead they find interesting. This will be at the same time that we handle the spoiled water situation.

Angati asked Kassius and Logan along with he ship's surgeon to inspect the water, take samples and empty all the bad barrels to check the bottom for depots of something... see if they could identify through their different knowledges what it was that had caused the water to go bad... "As for spells causing that... there is something that goes the opposite way of purify water... and I don't know of anyone other than Father Feres perhaps that could do this.... it is important to know if it was done through some substance or through magic... it's always safer to think that we are being sabotaged" she told her companions in private.

As for the different leads, she suspected that Tavey Nash was indeed a girl... and maybe she had some kind of relationship with Amelia, she'd check on the other ones to see if anyone had actually seen the 'boy' pissing downwind....

Angati will work harder with Lirith, she will go inspect the room where she was when they first arrived to thoroughly search when no one is around, or ask Logan as he'll be probably better doing that kind of search.

She will also call up all the colonists to deck. While they are up, have someone inspect their belongings to see if there is any of the drug or anything dubious. Have the captain give them a speech on the fate of whoever is caught using up any drug of that sort. On the positive side for the colonists ask if they need anything. Also start putting people against each other, say that the water has been contaminated by someone (even if we don't have prove of this), whoever finds prove of sabotage of any kind will get a handsome sum of gold... our survival depends on all working together and that kind of speech.

Lirith and Avner, Angati would try to find Alohan in private (that includes everyone in the group). To see if we can make a little whole to the captain chamber from which we can spy and keep track of his meetings and conversations. We can make him go out at some time, and profit that time to make the whole.... I am thinking about an unpleasant stomach issue there might do the thing.

No residues are found at the bottom of the barrels and the ships cleric/surgeon (Father Feres) seems clueless about what might have caused the water to become foul. "Oh bless us all, perhaps it is dark magic at work here?" is all he can offer.

Celene and Urol set out to analyse the water for added substances. The gnome takes a goodly sized sample of the bad water and runs it through his meth lab alchemical equipment, with the sorceress assisting. At the end they produce... nothing. Urol declares that nothing was added to the water - maybe Father Feres is right, and it was dark magic.

Angati:
As for the different leads, she suspected that Tavey Nash was indeed a girl... and maybe she had some kind of relationship with Amelia, she'd check on the other ones to see if anyone had actually seen the 'boy' pissing downwind....

OOC: Damn it Beni, was it so obvious?!!

Indeed, no-one has seen Tavey pissing. This is rather unusual since pissing overboard is one of the few passtimes open to the those onboard.

OOC: But that doesn't mean he/she is innocent.

Angati:
Angati will work harder with Lirith, she will go inspect the room where she was when they first arrived to thoroughly search when no one is around, or ask Logan as he'll be probably better doing that kind of search.

Angati goes down to the lower hold and searches, but doesn't find anything. Then she brings down the rogue down and Logan starts ripping up the floorboards with such abandon that she is worried he will spring a leak in the bottom of the ship!

But they find what they are looking for. Not contraband. But a cache of various weapons, tools & equipment that an assassin might use. Vials of poison. A serpentine dagger. A garrotte. Smoke bombs. A potion of gaseous form. And a strange looking book embossed with shark skin.

Angati:
She will also call up all the colonists to deck. While they are up, have someone inspect their belongings to see if there is any of the drug or anything dubious. Also start putting people against each other, say that the water has been contaminated by someone (even if we don't have prove of this), whoever finds prove of sabotage of any kind will get a handsome sum of gold... our survival depends on all working together and that kind of speech.

Do you still want to do this? Seems like there is more serious things to worry about than zzonga powder.

Angati:
Lirith and Avner, Angati would try to find Alohan in private (that includes everyone in the group). To see if we can make a little hole to the captain chamber from which we can spy and keep track of his meetings and conversations. We can make him go out at some time, and profit that time to make the whole.... I am thinking about an unpleasant stomach issue there might do the thing.

This is set up and proves very instructive. Lirith is VERY interested in Avner and has started an sexual relationship with him. The couple spend all of the time that Lirith is meant to be 'guarding' Avner in Alohan's bed making the sheets dirty. Alohan isn't there to actually watch this, do you tell him?

Celene's diplomacy doesn't dig up much - Sister Agnes has passed on all the information she has, but Celene does get a better feel of the woman after spending a gossipy afternoon with her.

This horrible lady is just a gossip, Celene estimates. There will be a little bit of truth in each of her tales, but they will be exaggerated out of all proportion.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Logan calls and a quiet meeting with the other party members after the twin revelations about Lirith cavorting with Avner and the weapons hidden in the hold arise.  "Do you think the two are connected?  Lirith was suspicious about 'checking the provisioning' when we first got on the ship.  And now with Avner?  Was she sent to sabotage this whole enterprise?  And now maybe she's shacking up with Avner to play a different angle?  What's she playing at, you think?  And should we confront her now, or keep a close eye on her?  If it's her, she'll know that someone's caught on to part of her game by the fact that all the 'supplies' hidden down in the hold have been confiscated.  Maybe we should just watch for anyone acting paranoid after that little discovery.  Of course, if there are all those supplies, there may have been more.  Maybe something to foul the water?"

Logan looks to Celene and Angati.  "Are there any spells that do that?"

Logan's going to skulk around the ship, particularly belowdecks, and try to note anyone who is going down to the provisions (or wherever they found that stash of weapons).
15:53, Today: Logan rolled 24 using 1d20+14.  Stealth.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Logan hides in the shadows below decks for a couple of days but no-one comes down there.

Kassius summons up a clear mental image of some zzonga powder and then casts his spell (how does he know so much about Zzonga powder?!). The spell tells him that none of the drug is within range.

The party also get together and try and work out the water situation. Unfotunately, Father Feres is not able to help out as he says his god has not granted him the appropriate spells, but both Angati and Kassius can cast 'Create Water' and make 12 gallons each time they cast, and they can both cast it unlimited times a day. And Kassius can furthermore purify the water at an amount of 48 gallons per casting - again with unlimited castings so...

...suffice it to say that the water situation is soon sorted out, and a guard is put on both the food and water. Colonists are used for this - two at a time to keep them honest.

OOC: G'damn paizo, how challenging was this meant to be for 6th level characters? Shouldn't've the villain have known that? Bah! Whatever...

The next day brings the expedition its first real encounter with bad weather as a thick fog springs up shortly before down. Urol claims that fog banks like this often occur along the jungle coast in this region and normally burn off by midmorning, but the thickness is nevertheless oppressive. The passengers head below deck, and the crew grows silent as all ears strain to the port side, marking the distant sound of breakers on the shore as this is now the only trustworthy method of ensuring that the expedition doesn't draw too close to the shallows while still staying parallel to the coast. The fog grows thicker, and soon even the Blue Nixie, only a few hundred feet ahead, is lost to vision.

Then the entire Sea Wyvern lurches as though it has struck a reef. Alohan calls out and Amella, who is at the helm, spins the wheel hard to starboard, but it is too late, the Sea Wyvern has hit something.

One of the sailors (nameless sailor #1) peers over the side. "She's caught on some sort of flotsam, skipper. It doesn't look too bad..."

A giant green transparent tentacle made of ooze rises up out of the water and slams down on the man, knocking him almost senseless. A second later the sailor is pulled of his feet as his entire body is adhered to the slimy creature, and the tentacle rises up to drive him down back onto the deck.

The party see an enormous glob of transparent protoplasm filled with drift wood, animal carcasses, ship fragments, rocks and other flotsam stuck to the side of the ship. As they watch it tries to ooze its way up onto the deck.

OOC: Yuch.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Logan jumps forward and finds that the ooze is an easy target - and despite its amorphous structure meaning that he isn't able to target any particular weak spot in it (no flanking or sneak attacks possible) it is child's play to carve large chunks off it with his rapier. His short sword however sails through a spot that he would've sworn was a tentacle and thuds into some driftwood instead - it is confusing where the flotsam ends and the slime begins (12 hp damage - shortsword attack misses due to 50% concealment).

Kassius is likewise tricked by the creature's grubby camouflage. The first arrow connects (9 hp), the second passes right through the creature and out into the ocean. The hunter must have aimed at a spot that was more sea water than foe.

Kassius thinks back through his experiences in the canals and tries to recall ever facing something like this before... he hasn't. Oh sure, there were little slimes and molds that had to be dealt with,  but this thing is an irregular blot of jelly almost 15' in diameter!

Kibeti takes a large bite out of the ooze and spits it out onto the deck disgustedly (9hp),

OOC: Angati is busy summoning, so that leaves Celene and Knstal. Please go ahead and make your own concealment check from now on. d100 and 1-50 is a miss.

Celene sends out two purple rays of radiant heat. One lasers across the surface of the ooze (11 hp), cutting a path through the middle of it and sending up clouds of stinky steam. Her second beam is sent astray when she needs to divert it out of the way of a sailor joining the melee fray (unnamed sailor #5 apparently has a deathwish) - and it scorches the gunnel instead.

<START OF ENEMYS' ROUND TWO>

The battle closes in around the ooze which backs off a little, slipping down into the water to instinctively limit the number of attackers that can hit it in melee at one time.

It randomly chooses one of the beings chopping into it at close range... a green sludgy tentacle appears from the mass slams down onto sailor #5. The poor man immediately adheres to the tentacle and is lifted off his feet as he screams at the top of his lungs (DEATHWISH GRANTED MY LITTLE FRIEND). Sailor #1 is pummelled repeatedly into the side of the ship until his screams blessedly fall silent.

"Dat is it! Keep at it!" yells Alohan over the combat as he runs down from the helm to join the combat. A geyser of water erupting from the starboard side of the vessel brings him to an abrupt halt as the other half of this particularly nasty ecosystem reveals itself.

One after another, draconic heads on the top of long sinewy necks appear out of the water roaring in defiance and ripping men off the deck with their gigantic mauls. (targets selected at random between Kassius, sailor #2 and sailor #3). Three of the heads target a startled Kassius, who had been leaning over the side of the ship to get a better shot at the ooze. All three heads hit, and the hunter is soon in danger of being ripped apart as he is bitten in the arms, shoulder and leg (17hp damage). Sailor two actually IS ripped in half, and each piece is swallowed by a hungry head. Sailor three is merely killed.

The eight headed hydra is in a good position - from this angle it will not be possible to target its body with melee weapons (unless you dive overboard into the water!) and to have a shot with a missile weapon the firer would need to be right on the edge of the vessel.

She shook the thought from her mind and cast a spell into the creatures maw hoping to slow down the terror it could cause their crew.

DC 18 will save or be slowed. Technically it can affect them both if they are within 30'.

SRD:
An affected creature moves and attacks at a drastically slowed rate.

Angati started casting again, this time a Curse, on the slime, so that it would leave them alone a bit while they concentrated on the Hydra.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Logan advances to stand knee deep in chopped up ooze parts and chops at a tentacle that peaking over the gunnel. He severs it with his rapier but the creature does not react - this was apparently not a critical part of its main body.

Kinstal learns from the rogue's mistake and barrels past the slight half-elf so that he can lean out over the edge of the boat. His swings down and cuts deep into the slime (9 hp).

OOC: I will remember the bodyguard thing and the roll you made for it if it comes up in the opponents' turn.

Angati's archon appears is a blinding flash of light, and the holy creature wastes no time in attacking the hydra. A searing beam of light flashes out from each eye and each lashes across the body of the hydra... it is like trying to fry a whole pig roast with the focused light from a magnifying glasses, the little beams seem so petty against the bulk of the creature (3 hp damage).

This pisses of the little archon no end. The flying avenger seems to exploded in a cloud of bright light, which flares out and washes over both the hydra and the slime. The hydra is initially able to resist the effects, but Angati puts a stop to that (hydra fails MF reroll). The mindless ooze immediately fails. Both of them seem intimated (menaced?) by the display of power from the little creature. The hydra therefore doesn't even see Angati's incoming curse and reals back as it saps its strength.

OOC: Geez, you're ladling on the debuffs, aren't you guys? Both the hydra and the slime are now slowed and, er... 'menaced', and the hydra is also cursed.

OOC: Actually, as Beni pointed out to me in private, MF was used on the hydra in order to get the slow to work, so it can't be used on the menace. The hydra is therefore not <MENACED>.

Thanks for noting that Beni, your reward will probably be getting your character eaten, but nice work anyway.

Alohan roars in fury as foam starts appearing in his mouth. He pauses for a second, apparently trying to come up with an appropriate battlecry. "I HAVE HAD IT WITH DESE MOTHERFRAKING HYDRAS ON DIS MOTHERFRACKING BOAT!" he finally screams and then charges straight at the closest head. He strikes a heavy blow on the side of neck (13 hp) that makes the head shrink back and hiss at him.

OOC: Okay, forget the whole thing about not being able to get the body. You are always hitting the body unless you are trying to sever a head. Opps, read the rules wrong.

"My goodness!" he exclaims. "What a wonderful specimen of Flotsamous Oozious Enormious! Oh, be careful! I need to take a sample!"

Then he seems to notice the eight headed hydra and its hissing heads for the first time. He frowns "Ohhh.... you are a nasty brute, aren't you?" He unslings his magic heavy repeating crossbow (thanks Logan!) and takes careful aim...

.. and then Skald bumps him out of the way as he reaches the top of the stairs and both shots go wide.

"Come on grandpa!" yells the pale half-elf. "Let's get to work." He notches an arrow and deftly sends it into one of the creature's necks (5 hp). The gnome gives the ranger a cross look behind his back.

The door to the captain's quarters opens and Avner appears in the doorway, dressed in his nightgown and with a pointy sleeping hat with a tassle on top of his head.

"What is the blazes is going on here?!" he demands as he takes a step out onto deck. "Can't a young member of the aristocracy get a decent morning's sleep around here? I gave strict instructions not to be disturbed until noon, now who is..."

The nobleman's jaw drops as he takes in the seen. Two of the hydra's heads have finished ripping the first sailor in two and are now tossing the body parts between each other in some sort of horrific game, while the others continuing hissing and biting at the crew.

The tentacle of the ooze hold another sailor has finally dissolved through the man's skin and is quickly breaking him down into a nutritious mush.

Avner takes a deep break. "Well... Yes, I see. Very good then," he mutters. He quietly takes a step back and closes the door to the cabin.

OOC: Whew! I'm glad I have an excuse to not process the bad guys' turn right now. Kassius still play.

Kassius nimbly dodges backwards further away from the ship, moving cautiously to avoid more bites. Once he is satisfied that he is out of the Hydra's reach, he casts a familiar spell on his bow, causing it to hum slightly with power. The archon's ineffectiveness has convinced Kassius that more firepower is necessary.

Kibeti meanwhile continues to attack the ooze, shredding it despite the cat's dislike of having ooze guts on his claws. This will require significant licking afterwards to get clean!

Amella (whom I forgot about before) charges into combat behind her captain - she strikes a hard blow but it bounces off the hydra's tough hide.

Kassius backs off, avoiding the resulting AoO from the hydra, and makes it to the middle of the boat. Kibeti rips the ooze to shreads (20 hp).

OOC: I think that is it... Oh, and Angati cast curse on the slime, not the hydra like I said in the description.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Despite the ooze suffering massive damage, it continues its attack, randomly selecting Logan as the target for the next blow. Kinstal tries to throw his heavily armed body between the ooze and the rogue, but is a second too slow (despite the ooze being slowed, menaced and cursed) and the thief is totally knocked off his feet as the slam from the newly grown tentacle connects (24 hp). The sticky tentacle instantly adheres to the half-elf's leg and deftly wraps around it again and again as it lifts Logan up off the deck. The thief is left swing from one leg 19' above the wooden railing of the ship.

As the thief spins around, struggling to free himself, he sees the sailor picked up a second before him slammed into the side of the ship repeatedly until he is head is nothing more than a bloody pulp.

OOC: Logan, you are grappled and immobile. You are still able to attack the slime or try and free yourself, and your friends may attempt to sunder the tentacle with a slashing weapon. The tentacle has the same AC as the ooze, hardness 0 and 10 hit points.

The hydra, moving in slow motion, pulls back with the lower half of its body sinking deeper in the water. Then it propels itself up out of the water with its finned back legs and rises like a jumping whale out of the waves. The front half of its body lands on the edge of the ship, shattering the wooden gunnel into splinters and tipping the whole starboard side of the boat down towards the water. The Sea Wyvern tilts at an alarming slope (about 45°) and everything not tied down, i.e. ropes, equipment, sailors, PCs; starts sliding in that direction.

OOC: Everyone (well, not Logan, the ooze has him firmly secured) make an DC12 acrobatics check or slide 2 squares to the left, i.e. towards the hydra. If you fail you also gain the <PRONE> condition. Make this check before you take any other actions in your round.

Alohan: Fail
Alohan MF reroll: Pass
Amella: Pass
Sailor 4: Fail
Sailor 6: Fail
Sailor 7: Pass
Sailor 8: Fail
Skald: Pass
Urol: Pass

To Angati's horror, she sees many of her friends and other members of the crew start sliding off the decking. She can't save them all (at least not now that we are playing the MF rules properly) but does play with time so that Alohan at least stays on board.

The hydra looses its grip a little and slips back so that the boat recovers a little (to about 30°), but starts wiggling around to do it again... It seems like this isn't the first sailing ship it has had to sink and it knows its stuff.

OOC: Now that the angle is more reasonable, there isn't any difficulty in moving around the ship, although it is unnerving looking down into the hydra's eight waiting hungry heads.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Angati concentrated on Alohan so as to avoid having him fall onto the Hydra monster, but that made her loose her footing, drop and slide a bit. She swore at this, but she profited to stand up helping herself with the foremast and then she used a rope to secure herself to it, as she started casting yet another spell.

Meanwhile, the lantern archon continued to launch its ray's upon the hydra, and even though the light rays were incredibly precise, they seemed to cause little damage. Seeing the little damage the archon was causing, Angati cried to the Archon... "take that cannon ball and teleport way up just above him, drop it on him...."

Then, she finished casting Liberating command on Logan.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

OOC: Angati casts liberating command to allow Logan to make his escape artist check during her round, not his. Logan gets free before his round and may take a normal turn, i.e. to attack or more sensibly retreat and heal up, not that he ever does that! ;) I will wait for Logan to take that turn before I proceed to the enemy's round since I need to know if he is a target for the ooze.

As Kassius pointed out, Angati already used her immediate action to activate MF, so she can't use it for Liberating Command as well. Let's say she used her move action to stand up, her standard action to cast liberating command and she doesn't manage to tie herself to the mast this round (nice idea though).

She does manage to shout out her commands to the archon though.

The archon scorches the hydra again with similarly little effect (6 hp). Then it responds to Angati's command and teleports down to the deck to grab the ship's anchor (cannons haven't been invested yet so it can't use a cannonball!). It will teleport back up next round.

Kinstal continues hacking away at the ooze, but it is hard to know what is slime and what is just flotsam, he thinks hopes he might have hit something important somewhere in his wild swings (4 hp).

Assisted by Angati's spell, the cunning rogue twists out of the tentacle's grip and lands nimbly on the deck (where he gets to take his turn).

Kassius slips down the deck, and only manages to save himself from falling overboard by scrambling to his feet. This unfortunately brings him right in line with the hydra's heads and two of the leap to attack (it has combat reflexes). One of the heads manages to bite him on the shoulder... again (8 hp).

Kibeti manages to keep his feet (instantly passes due to +12 acrobatics) and rips into the ooze, ignoring the junk and driftwood to find the creature itself (miss check made and passed) with his bite (12 hp).

Celene also slides towards the hydra, but stops her 5' short of it. She tries to cast a spell up at the hydra from back, but fails (did you burn up a spell slot?).

OOC: Logan still to move.

"Get out of my way!" screams Urol at Skald as he tries to get a good angle on the hydra from behind the ranger.

"Bah! You're such an old fart!" barks the half-elf, but he makes way and casts a spell (gravity bow) on the gnome's magical heavy repeating crossbow. Two bolts crack out from it, and one lands in the body of the hydra (6 hp).

"De snakes try to be sinking de boat!" screams Alohan, rather redundantly. "Grrrraaaah!"

He slashes his Taiaha into the neck of the head closest to him (5 hp).

By his side, Amella attacks but misses.

Sailors #7 and #8 charge in and one of them actually manages to hit the hydra solidly (11 hp).

Sailors #4 & #6 resurface on the water and thrash around, trying to get away from the hydra and find a rope so they can climb back up on deck - everyone is too busy to through one down right now.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Since Logan has escaped its grasp, the ooze randomly chooses Kinstal as its next victim. A new tentacle forms out of the ooze, creeping up around the warrior's legs. Before he realises it the fighter is firmly held by the sticky tentacle up to his thighs and then he is swept off his feet and whammed from side to side against the gunnel, the mast, the decking... the damage is horrific (26 hp and grappled), but at least he is too heavy to fully lift off the deck.

OOC: Same deal as Logan, you can sudden it by doing 10 points of damage or try to escape.

The hydra tries the same trick as before... rearing up on the lower half of its body. This triggers an AoO from: Amella, sailor #8, Alohan & sailor #7. (But not Kassius as he is equipped with his bow).

The native does not waste the opportunity, and plunges the tip of his jade taiaha deep into the belly of the beast (10 hp). The first mate misses, but the two sailors hit doing substantial damage (10 hp in total).

The hydra's heads squeal and it comes crashing down on the side of the boat in agony. The ship lists even further to starboard than last time and again everybody is thrown off their feet and towards the water.

OOC: DC12 acrobatics check or move 2 squares left. And the monsters don't block you, you just slide right over them into the drink.  :D

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Skald and sailor #8 fail to regain their feet in time (I am not wasting the MF on those guys now that we are limited to one a round), and both slide into the water to join the two crewmembers already there. The hydra's front claws rake along the deck as it struggle to hold its purchase on the ship, and there is a sound of snapping timber from below as it is clear that structural damage is taking place. Finally, the huge creature seems to weaken from the blood spurting out of the wounds on its chest and it fails to entirely maintain its grip, causing it to slip back a bit. This allows the ships keel to return to the water and the vessel to return to a 45° angle. Seawater pours out of the portholes on the lower decks as the ship rights itself.

The hydra appears to be close to death (2 hp remaining).

Sailor #6 swims forwards in the water, and manages to grab a rope hanging from the ship's dingy, be begins climbing up the rope hand over hand...

...and is suddenly ripped from it by the giant great white shark that burst out of the water below him.

The man doesn't even have time to scream before he is pulled beneath the waves. There is a second of thrashing and then the sea turns crimson.

A second dark fin bares down on sailor #4 who starts screaming.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Seeing that the Hydra was dead or close to dying, the Archon lantern dropped the cannon ball on top of the slime (off the ship), and teleported back to continue pestering with it's rays.

Angati, on her side, managed to keep her footing thanks to being next to the mast. She took the opportunity to tangle one of her arms around it in case more movement was coming, and concentrated on casting her next spell... this time, it was Kinstal that needed help liberating himself so.. she repeated the liberating spell on him.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Logan misses the ooze.

Celene slides in underneath the hydra as the deck tilts, but keeps her wits about her and casts magic missile right up unto its soft under belly. The hydra's eight heads hiss and then collapse onto the deck. The creature starts sliding back into the sea and the ship returns to its normal footing.

OOC: I couldn't be bothered working out if the hydra had an AoO left or not, so you probably got a bit lucky there.

The shinning lantern archon teleports straight up 50' with the cannonball anchor and then...

OOC: I'm using the falling objets rules:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamema...les/#Falling_Objects

...and saying that he is dropping a small object from 30' above the slime and trying to hit its touch armour class. Since the range increment for dropping objects is 20', this attack is at -1 and I the archon's BAB is +2 and the archon doesn't have a dex bonus.

09:12, Today: Dungeon Master rolled 17 using 1d20+1.  Archon drops anchor.
09:13, Today: Dungeon Master rolled 9 using 2d6.  Anchor damage.

...the little archon takes careful aim, straining under the heavy weight (for it) of the cast iron anchor. Finally it lets go and the anchor speeds down into the middle of the ooze, punching out a big circle in the middle of the slime. Ka-SPLOOSH goes the seawater as it flies up from the middle of the hole like a small geyser (9 hp damage).

"Angati!" screams Alohan from his spot overlooking the body of the hydra. "Damn it, we be needing de anchor!"

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Kassius continues venting his fury on the corpse of the hydra as it slips into the sea, his arrows pounding into the bulk of the beast.

Kibeti goes berserk and jumps into the middle of the ooze, his claws randomly ripping things apart... it seems to work as the slime stops moving and the tentacle holding Kinstal becomes flaccid, letting the fighter return to his feet. The slime slow rips in two along the gunnel, with the part on the deck gently quivering like a dead jellyfish.

The action continues in the water as the men try to escape the great white sharks hunting them. Ropes are thrown over and the men start climbing up. Sailor #4 makes it up on deck okay, but one of the sharks catches Skald as he clambers up the rope, fixing its jaws around the half-elf's right leg (13 hp).

"Don't worry, I got him," yells out Urol. The gnome takes careful aim with his heavy crossbow and fires off the last bolt in the magazine - it catches the shark in one eye and it releases its prey. Urol drops his weapon and then pulls the wounded Skald up on deck (well, that last bit happens in the next round, but whatever).

The sea returns to a deceptive foggy tranquility as the sharks disappear.

A porthole in the stern of the ship snaps shut.

OOC: Congrats, another combat under your respective belts.

Are you going to heal up? And if yes, how?

The sorceress observed her friends and the crew next some of them were dead, others only injured, for a moment she almost called to Wee Jas out of pure reflex. She lamented that her powers of healing were gone if only for a moment. She approached Angati instead.

"We have a number injured. I have a wand we could use if you would rather conserve your magic." she said quietly. "I no longer have the power to heal..." she barely whispered.

OOC: Here is who is injured and by how much. PS: I took into account the CLW spell that Kassius cast.

Kinstal 26
Logan 10
Kassius 12
Skald 13

After Angati's healing splurge...

Kinstal 1
Kassius 2

The fighter and the hunter have 1-2 points of damage each. Acceptable, so on with the show...

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Father Feres, his back still to Logan, grips the table edge and makes a series of low growls interspaced with some choked words. "Gggg... my stomach... what have you done to me you cur?" The cleric looks down at his belly.

Shefton glances at Logan. "Are you fracken crazy? I ain't fracken standing down! He's got some sort of plague or something!"

Father Feres makes a choking noise in the back of his throat. "Not...gggggggaaaah! ...plague...it was the.... ggggaaaaagh! ...the dates!"

"Oh, I wondered who was stealing them," says Shefton, lowering his cleaver a little. He chuckles. "Heh. I thought it was you Logan. You know, no honour among thieves and all that."

Father Feres finally turns around. The bottom of his shirt hangs open, revealing an unnaturally distended belly hanging over his belt. Within the stomach, underneath the skin, something can be seen to be moving around inside.

Father Feres clutches at his stomach and screams. A high pitched cry of agony that changes mid-way to a deep throated roar of rage and hunger. A series of jagged black spikes burst out of the back of his shirt and the hands that clutch the table sprout grey pustule tipped fur. The cleric turns around and opens out his hands for Logan's throat, all trace of the man who was once Father Feres totally gone.

<quote Logan>"Shefton, what did you do?!" </Orange>

"What? Me?! I don't have anything to do with this. There ain't know way that a couple of stolen dates could do this to him!"

Logan blocks the savage priest's clawed hand but the creature grabs his hand and bites him on the arm (8 hp). When the rogue kicks the savage man back, he has a chunk of Logan's flesh in his mouth. The cleric roars in delight.

OOC: You know the drill, make a DC14 fort save or contract savage fever. PS: No MF allowed since Angati doesn't have LOS.

Shefton shrinks back into the corner, obviously shaken by the turn of events. He doesn't come forward to offer any aid as Logan fights for his life.

OOC: The rest of the party are on deck healing up, but I will bring them down in a couple of rounds. Think you can survive until then? ;)

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

OOC: Sorry Logan, but I am going to NPC you for a couple of rounds in order to get the other players involved.

I'll let you make the fort save though. :D

Logan attacks with his rapier and short sword, hitting with the second weapon (6 hp).

Shefton shows no sign of moving from the corner.

End of round one

The corrupted priest responds with a series of savage attacks, but the rogue nibly dodges them.

Logan strikes and manages to inflict a small wound with his short sword again (3 hp).

End of round two

The savage creature slices through Logan's tunic and a thing bead of red appears across through the gap(7 hp). The creature raises up its arms in triumph and moves in for the feast...

...only to receive Logan's blades through its heart and throat (16 hp). Father Feres spasms and wriggles up the blades, and manages to bite Logan's cheek (7 hp & make another DC14 save if you passed the other one!). Then it slumps down on the cold steel and is still.

The rogue slips the creature from his swords and then jumps away in order to avoid the spray of acid that always sprouts out of these creatures when they are killed... but not appears. Instead the thing that had once been Father Feres lies on its back on the galley floor.

Father Feres' stomach churns as the... whatever it is inside seems to fully wake up. Suddenly the unfortunate man's corpse explodes sending a spray of rancid flesh and blood other the entire room, covering both Logan and Shefton from head to toe. Inside the middle of the blast four bloated humanoid figures appear, each about 4' tall and almost as wide. The creatures are grossly fat and smell terrible. They squeal in an apparent mixture of surprise and terror, and then start launching themselves at the two rogues in the room.

The rest of the party (Alohan, Kinstal, Angati, Celene, Kassius & Kibeti) have finally responded to the sound of the combat and reach the small room as this time, all of them crowding inside it just in time to respond to this new challenge.

OOC: Okay, no map for this one, just go for it in melee - sorry, no missile combat possible Kassius due to the tight quarters and lack of head space. Celene, if you do ranged attacks then your targets will have soft cover and be involved in combat.

Celene casts her spell and two of the creatures instantly slow. Celene does her thing and a third is also affected.

Logan takes the initiative and strikes before the creature unaffected by the spell has a chance to react - despite its skin being resistance to his blades he fells it in one attack.

OOC: These creatures have DR 5/something, and the 'something' is not 'magic' since that is what Logan's blades are.

Angati activates her protection ability and then gets in position so that Logan will have flanking next round.

OOC: Kinstal, Alohan & Kassius to play.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Celene searches her memories of the many dreary hours of training spent in the temple of Wee Jas for some hint of what these creatures might be.

She remembers the lists of demons that she memorized and is certain that these nasty little brutes are 'dretches'. These among the lowest and least powerful demons that live in the abyss, but they do have a resistance to all weapons except those made of 'cold iron'. They can also use their smell to their advantage (stinking cloud) and cause fear in the weak minded. Celene doubts they are going to be able to offer up much resistance to her and her friends, but if there were a whole host of people infected with this terrible infliction then things might be different...

Kassius sends two arrows towards one of the disgusting blobs and cold iron plunges deep into its belly. The wretch squeals and clutches at the fetching on the shaft as it falls over backwards, its dirty reddish-brown life's blood leaking from its chest. Within a few seconds of it hitting the decking it is motionless.

OOC: Please cross off 2 x cold iron arrows.

Kibeti knocks his target over, biting at its face and ripping off chunks of foul tasting flesh. This small demon is quickly overcome.

The galley is slient. Covered in blood, guts and feces, but silent.

OOC: Sorry Kinstal, but you just miss out. If you want a chance to swing your sword when 'Murder Machine Inc' is in a combat, you need to be quick about it.

Celene stared at the cook thinking for a few moments. "It could be a coincidence that the Father came in asking about the dates. I'm not ready to rule them out completely. The likeliest scenario is that something or someone on this ship caused the Father's condition. Had he been infected prior to disembarking the likelihood of him reaching gestation during the trip would be low. We must proceed under the assumption someone is trying to sabotage us from within."

Celene's pleasant demeanor disappeared and her eyes drilled into the young cook "Tell me everything you remember about this merchant. His name, what he looked like, his mannerisms, no detail is too insignificant." she said sternly

Angati nodded, but it was absentmindedly, she watched as Omi, walked around the blood and even avoided sucking on it, and then carefully climbed back on her shoulder while her sister looked in horror at the resulting scene. "I can't purify food or drink... I am afraid... only create water, that's all... but this is most dire indeed".

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Celene:
Celene stared at the cook thinking for a few moments. "It could be a coincidence that the Father came in asking about the dates. I'm not ready to rule them out completely. The likeliest scenario is that something or someone on this ship caused the Father's condition. Had he been infected prior to disembarking the likelihood of him reaching gestation during the trip would be low. We must proceed under the assumption someone is trying to sabotage us from within."

"Huh? 'Ask'? He didn't ask for any dates. I never gave him any dates. *If* he even really ate any, he must've stolen them from the spice cupboard," says Shefton emphatically.

Celene:
Celene's pleasant demeanor disappeared and her eyes drilled into the young cook "Tell me everything you remember about this merchant. His name, what he looked like, his mannerisms, no detail is too insignificant." she said sternly

"I dunno," shrugs Shefton. "He was just a normal merchant." He looks at Celene and sees how resolute she looks and lips his lips.

"Well... now you mention it. He was a foreign type, ya know? He was one of those Emirates people, from Ylarium. That's where they grow dates. I hadn't seen him in the market before. Hmm... I mean, I guess it is possible he set me up. Thank goodness I didn't eat any of the dates! I was saving them for a special desert," he pauses, then continues sheepishly. "...for you... but it is all ruined now..."

Kassius:
"This is just the latest disaster related to food. The sharks were attracted by rotting food, the water poisoned, and now this. We should check the entire food supply with a fine tooth comb. That seems to be the common link."

Alohan Nuari:
The 6' tall, nearly-naked islander imperiously moves to the doorway and bellows, Lil'ridd!  Lil'ridd! Bringing your small self here dis verr'y time is NOW!  Making crew to cleaning dis being your job!"

Lilith Veldirose, the red headed tomboy sailor is summoned and appears in the doorway. She'd been below decks when the combat started, and what with being thrown around by the hydra's tricks, she hadn't managed to reach the deck before the fight was over. She is shocked by the mess in the galley, but follows the captain's instructions quickly by organizing some of the colonist to clean up the mess - she doesn't use the crew - there are now only four regular sailors left and they are needed on deck to patch things up.

Alohan Nuari:
Angati praying for cleansing for pantry is most worthy idea also, I am for thinking."

Following Kassius' instructions, the contents of the spice cupboard are carefully pulled out and brought to deck so they can be inspected in the sunlight. It is found that about one third of the dates have been adulterated. They have been carefully sliced open and small black spheres about 3 mm in diameter pushed inside them. It would have been easy enough to eat them without noticing when eating a date.

Urol, with Celene's assistance, conducts a quick analysis of the black spheres. They find out that they dissolve in acid, then conduct a carefully inspection under his special 'close seeing' glasses after cutting one in half. They have growth rings, and they have been cut from a larger natural product and then polished.

"Humph. They look like little pieces of polished 'mother-of-pearl'," says Urol finally. "But mother-of-pearl isn't black of course!"

It would've been easy enough to hide some of these in ANY of the food on board, and a 'purify food' spell will not be enough to deactivate them.

When Logan learns of the adulterated dates, he returns to Shefton to offer his apologies for jumping to conclusions regarding new cook's role in the mess.

His mind, however, still is on the threat facing them.  "Urol, these shards of the pearl...do they need to be consumed to have an effect?  Is there anyone to detect them other than close visual inspection?"  He looked to Angati and Celene. "Are they magical?  Can you detect them, now that you know to inspect it?"

He looked over the ship, and thought about the numerous hiding places available on board.  "The number of places where someone could hide something like this...even a small bag could hide dozens of these; enough to curse us all, at least!  Should we...should we interrogate everyone on board one at a time?  Who would hate us all enough to do what happened to Father Feres..."

Logan trails off, as he realizes the answer is, at this point, probably dozens of people.

The knowledge of detecting such evil, arcane or physically, is beyond Alohan, but he stands silent and thoughtful in consideration of Logan's thoughts about the crew.

Urol screws up his face and then studies the samples again in detail... he has to admit that Celene is right, these are likely small, polished pieces of the black pearl that Vanthus broken in Kraken's Cove.

Celene:
"We need to extend the search beyond the food. We need to scour every inch of this ship in case someone aboard slipped the pearls into the dates." she said a with deepening look of concern on her face.

OOC: Okay, is that an order? Each of the pieces is 3 mm in diameter, so it is going to be impossible to guarantee that a search will find all of them, but of course you can give it a shot.

Logan:
"Urol, these shards of the pearl...do they need to be consumed to have an effect?<Orange>

"Oh, um..." Urol holds one of the little spheres up to the light and studies it closely. Celene has to put a restraining hand on the gnome to stop him licking it.

"Um, yes, definitely. They need to be consumed in order to trigger the effect," he says.

Logan is pretty sure that the alchemist has no idea if that is true or not.

Logan:
<Orange>Is there anyone to detect them other than close visual inspection?"  He looked to Angati and Celene. "Are they magical?  Can you detect them, now that you know to inspect it?"

<quote Celene>Celene did as Logan instructed and cast detect magic on the dates.

Celene casts detect magic and then looks down at one of the mini-pearls - it gives off a strong light in her magical sight despite its small size...

...of course this light will be harder to spot when it is hidden in the middle of a sack of rice, or its in the middle of a slab of meat, or in the morning porridge, or...

OOC: Hmm, I don't know about that. I mean, are you asking if someone on board is acting suspicious? They all are in a way!

Skald is scared of the light.
Lirith has been trying to smuggle things on board.
Amella spends too much time with the cabin 'boy'.
Shefton dumped those food scraps.
Father Feres didn't seem to know any clerical magic... actually, Father Feres has a pretty good alibi for not being the villain now!

Celene steps away from the pieces of pearl and approached Logan "Logan would you mind accompanying me for a moment." she says quietly and once she has the rogues attention she walks away from the assembled crew so they can speak more privately "Let us check the hold and bilge specifically. Perhaps we can find some kind of clue while the crew is occupied. If nothing else if someone sees us leave we may find that they will attempt to stop us." Celene takes a moment to cast as spell of protection on herself before heading below, hopefully with the rogue following close behind.

The sorceress and the rogue head below decks to see what they can find, leaving the entire crew either assembled above or cleaning out the galley. None of the crew make any move to stop them.

Of course, there are still plenty of people below deck. Thirty men, women and children are milling around the main bunkroom in a panicky state with many of them having bumps and bruises from the rough treatment that the hydra had dished out.

Actually, not all of them are in the bunkroom. Celene and Logan find to their dismay that the dry goods hold which is on the same level of the bunkroom has been turned into a sort of 'day-room' by the colonists with many of the worst wounded now being treated out there.

They head down to the lower hold but can hardly get into it. It is a jumble of cargo with broken barrels and crates all over the place...

...honestly. If you want to do a proper search then you'll need to make landfall somewhere and unload everything, search, then reload - presumably with entirely fresh food.

Amella puts her hand around the cabin boy/person protectively and then answers. "Tavey is my niece Mistress Lidu. OOC: You'll need to take guard duty in ships because you're days away from any port. As I mentioned Sasserine is 1½ weeks back in the direction you've come from. Then there is Ravenskarp about 1½ weeks further along. But that is a Thyatian port - the Thyatians are the guys who occupied Sasserine for 100 years and are NOT on friendly terms with the city state after it managed to throw off the occupation.

With the clean-up of the cabin underway and a few of the others of talking with passengers or going below decks, Alohan finds First Mate Amelia and the two retreat to the Captain's quarters...

But it isn't long before Alohan is back on deck, carrying a rolled parchment in one hand.  His dark walnut colored skin shimmers slightly, but it is the nearly ecstatic smile that probably catches the attention of anyone looking --- especially Kinstal, Logan, and Kassius who he promptly motions to gather together. He uses a nearby barrel as a makeshift table and spreads out a map.

OOC: Anyone is welcome. It just seemed like the others are already engaged.

The Nuari was just a few sentences into his idea, when Celene joined them.
Celene:
"... I can convince Alohan to find a port--" Celene said....

"Yaa'ss!" he says with an exuberant laugh as two joyfulhands descend and give each of her shoulders a cheerful shake. "We be d-inking under de same moon! We needing new supplies. Looking here," he points to a sea map of their surrounding area, "dis be dey Wyvern's locating. We cannot be returning to sasserine, but..." he slides a finger to slightly to the northeast. "Dis be de island of D'wair. It being the southwestern edge of my Pearl Islands, and de port of Renkrue" he stomps his foot down on the deck as he says the name, "is de largest village on the island of Dwair. It is being...alone?... No, w'at dey word?" He looks at Kassius for a moment as if to read it on the half-orc's brow "....remote? Ya'ss. Remote of me Fadder's lands but having most all we be needing. Let us go to Renkrue!" and he stomps the deck again one time as a flashing smile of happiness explodes again across his face.

He looks up again as Alohan stomps. Huh, what was that? Oh right, Alohan had suggested something. "Sounds fine." He grunts.

Also Dwair is technically also part of his father's kingdom, abet very far away from the capital and therefore control is weak.

It is at that point that a dark shape appears, cutting through the thick fog. Fortunately it is not more danger, but rather The Blue Nixie which Lavinia has ordered to circle back and search for the delayed Wyvern.

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

OOC: Moving us forward a little bit...

The Blue Nixie draws close, but at Alohan's insistence doesn't pull along side. Lavinia takes the Jade Ravens (I totally forgot to mention, but those guys are on the other boat) out in a row boat allowing her to get near enough talk to those on board The Sea Wyvern. The situation with the contaminated dates, Father Feres' death and the possibility of all the rest of the food being contaminated is discussed - it proves impossible to hide this possible contamination from the crew or colonists as the word of it has spread very quickly.

Lavinia arranges for a boat load of food from the Nixie to be transported over. This is kept in the forwards bunkroom and set under continuous guard (members of the party since the crew and colonists can't be 100% trusted).  Four of the strongest men among the colonists are selected and promoted to being sailors to replace the four who were killed in the battle. And with that the fleet sets sail for the Pearl Islands...

It only takes two days to reach the village of Renkrue. It is a small town of straw huts, dirt streets and about 1,000 inhabitants. Alohan is surprised by its primitiveness - the towns and villages on the main island of Nuar are certainly more prosperous.

The Sea Wyvern docks at the single wharf while the Blue Nixie drops anchor in the sheltered bay and the village elders come down the dock to greet them. The chieften is a gigantically rotund man with a broad nose and intricate black tattoos circling down his strong arms. In a deep baritone voice he bids them all welcome.

"I am chief Ixawhani, 'He who sleeps with sound' this means in this common tongue. I am the leader of the Dwair tribes. We are glad to meet those who will trade with us and not try to take what is ours by force."

Amella shrugs. "The usual story. Her family were trying to line her up for a young marriage and she would've rather died than be with that little royal frac. She choose a crazy life at sea with her Aunt instead."

Angati:

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Dungeon Master:
"I am chief Ixawhani, 'He who sleeps with sound' this means in this common tongue. I am the leader of the Dwair tribes. We are glad to meet those who will trade with us and not try to take what is ours by force."

Alohan stands broad-legged and fully naked (again!) on the deck. He raises both hands high in the air and answers in his native tongue [Language unknown: "Seneng to Ateiventi utine Whfing. Ch es Lespreday, aterommen i us eve adssin.  E whearepre nt ac nceineortera u siho Wasounres ich p m erestaear.  Sanc ce derpr ur whisonoer pr hiloutsa, inof ie thear to it nteol onatof."]

With a gesture to include everyone on board he switches to the Common Tongue, "I speaking for d'ese visit-dors, be offering peace and follow de way of de Nuari. We be at your friendship."

Re: 3B - SWW - Part Two: Life on the Ocean Waves

Ixawhani nods at Alohan's/Nahola's answer and steps forward, loosening his loin cloth. The little garment falls to the dock, revealing his manhood proudly. He likewise continues speaking in the common tongue.

"It is good that there is one of us among them. We have had problems with pirates over the last many years. Come Nahola, we will discuss trade and… the matter of what happened to your own food.”

It is clear that it is expected that the captain of the ship plus a fair number of other people are expected to come onshore and partake of the hospitality.

OOC: Okay, we are going to divide into two streams now. One more roleplaying, the other more combat focused. Please let me know which one you prefer, and no, you can’t all go in the combat one!
