Ethiendar watches as the conversation continues. He glanced at Grabthar when he spoke; then turned his gaze back towards Emerald and Ayleurian.

"Perhaps, perhaps not." he said in a normal tone, as though somewhat preoccupied.

Emerald felt a warmth inside and her expression softens as she reaches a hand up to put it on Ayleurian's hand. She continues speaking softly.

Ayleurian looked dumbfounded at Emerald for a moment, then she smiled and said something.  Ayleurian then held up a hand as if to ward off questions and said something more, seemingly at length.  Ayleurian then looked thoughtful for a moment before adding another whisper.  She then added in another quick whisper.

Ayleurian didn't seem all that non-plussed about what Emerald had just said.  Ayleurian smiled.

Just then a pop pop-pop pop could be heard as 4 people, er, creatures? They resembled Ethiendar, so Strix. They popped in to being in the center of the camp. They immediately took up positions, 2 guards with spears, one with a gnarled staff and the other looking quite elderly and wizened. The elderly Strix looked around before catching his eye on Ethiendar. He didn't look too pleased with what he saw.

Emerald started to smile "Thanks, Ayleur-", but jerks her head to pay attention to the matter at hand and looks worried. She makes no other sudden movements, however, opting to merely be ready to defend.

Grabthar was ready to attack whatever invading monst...

Oh.  This must be the Strix inquisition and they're here to excommunicate Ethiander for sharing space with humans for longer than half a minute without killing them.  Even so, since relations are strained as it is, and if you so much as take notes in the presence of a Strix they take it as an "attack" that breaks the truce, Grabthar simply stands stoically, watching to see what will happen next.  Probably best that the first to address them not be one of human heritage.

"Everyone except Ayleurian leave the camp now! Do not return into it under any circumstance. Grabthar, Emerald: see to it immediately! There is to be no violence here!" Ethiendar orders moments after the 4 strix appear in the camp; his voice raised so that all there can hear him. Throughout his gaze never left the other Strix.

"Lower your spears, there will be no violence here." Ethiendar says, switching suddenly to his native language; which to everyone sounds rather similar to the screeching of an eagle. He would meet the gaze of each of the newly arrived Strix, the elder last of all and then not look away from him.

The elder looked scornfully at Ethiendar and told the guards to hold their actions. The guards just stood there, spear butts on the ground. "We come in peace, Ethiendar." Elder Grekan spoke, surprisingly in Common. "We merely came to observe this... rabble lead caravan, and to see what area you deem worthy of the Stryx race." He emphasized the 'you' with contempt in his voice.

Ethiendar relaxed, if only a little. He also looked very annoyed. He switched back to common so Ayleurian could join in the conversation.

"I made it clear that it would take time to get there; and that I would return when I had located several possible areas for our kind to settle. What really brings you here, Elder Grekan. If you wished to only observe, why bring so many armed guards with you?"
he said, emphasizing 'elder' with contempt to match that coming from the elder.

"One cannot trust those who would seek their... annihilation. Would you be so trusting of those who have been seeking your destruction since you were but a lad? I bring but a small retinue to show I am at least honorable enough not to bring a full regiment." With that Elder Grekan looked about the camp with scorn at the many humans in attendance.

Ethiendar was quiet for a moment, thinking.

Ethiendar speaks, his tone less challenging than when the elder first arrived. "No, I remain distrustful of the humans; though I do believe Ayleurian is worthy of trust, and she has kept the humans well under control." Ethiendar scanned the area, making sure none of the humans (his gaze lingering for the briefest of moments on Emerald) were trying to approach them. While looking around his gaze passed over the remains of the frogs

"I would recommend your guards remain vigilant for things other than humans. The lands around here are home to frogs large enough to eat an ox whole. There also was a giant eagle flying around earlier."

Emerald has not moved from her position. She looked like she was going to, but the invaders basically said for the humans to stay put where they can see them, without saying it precisely that way. Besides; Ayleurian and/or Tarsis have not said anything about moving. (I forget who is technically the boss of this caravan)

Ayleurian straightened up and brushed her apparel into tidiness. She then glided welcomingly over to Elder Grekan. "Greetings, Elder Grekan." Ayleurian greeted the elder with the ceremonial greeting of the Strix, as well as one could without wings. It was an odd gesture. Not quite a curtsy, and not quite a bow, but something in between. One could imagine that with wings it would be quite ceremonially pompous indeed. "I find your trip was uneventful? Teleportion can sometimes be... quite exhilarating." Ayleurian shuddered slightly at the not-too distant memories of that morning's teleportation fiasco.

The elder looked abashed at Ayleurian's display of respect, "Who... Who taught you that?!" Elder Grekan looked disdainfully at Ayleurian and then glanced suspiciously at Ethiendar. "Very well." He resigned himself. "That was almost acceptable." He then gracefully returned the greeting, this time with wings present for their part. "Greetings... Lady Ayleurian. My trip was... uneventful and satisfactory. You humans are rather proficient with magics such as that one." The greeting was very much as pompous with wings as one would have imagined, probably even more so. However, the elder's voice seemed to grate at the words he exchanged, undoubtedly due to his distrust of any human. Elder Grekan straightened from his posturing and got down to business. "Now, since we are only here to observe," he put more emphasis on 'only', "I will be taking myself and my retinue to a location where we can... observe. Ethiendar," Elder Grekan called out. "Do see that you do not dishonor your race by being around these humans too much. Remember who you are." Elder Grekan then turned towards a direction and flew off a good distance. Far enough to be not part of the camp, but close enough to be visible, and unforgettable. His retinue followed close after.

Grabthar remained stoic and vigilant during the exchange, silently on guard for sudden violence from either the new visitors or some random monsters.  When the Strix delegation heads off, he looks impressed.

"Well.  That certainly went much better than expected.  For all of his careless racist hate speech, I was expecting him to order Ethiandar executed for Ayleurian's show of respect.  Well my earlier promise stands.  Should someone attack Ethiandar, I will defend him.  Especially now that his concern for the well being of others - even those who insult him repeatedly - is more apparent.  So glad cooler heads prevailed in this case."

Ethiendar stood still, thinking of the encounter. Grabthar's words caught his attention anyway.

"You would do well to show more caution. Each of those Strix the elder brought could gut you with ease; alone. You also should remember that all humans and strix are under truce."

Ethiendar went quiet for a moment more, then approached Ayleurian (walking away from Grabthar) and whispered something urgently to her.

Emerald lets out a sigh of relief once the Elder left. She isn't surprised at all that Ayleurian knew the strix' greeting of respect; the lady has already proven to be knowledgeable on strix and their behavior. Her mind burns it into memory in case she will need it to survive some day.

Seeing Ethiendar walk over to Ayleurian, Emmy figured whatever he was saying, he is best off confiding in Ayleurian for now.

Ayleurian looked thoughtful for a moment before responding. "You're right. We shouldn't have lingered this long anyway. It's time for us to get moving." She then turned to the rest of the camp and signaled everyone to wrap up what they were doing and to get ready to move. "Emerald and Grabthar, you're in the wagon behind me. Ethiendar, you're with me for now. I need your eyes. We're entering dangerous territory." Ayleurian headed for her wagon and climbed up.

ooc: I'm going to assume Grabthar is doing just that.

Once all the wagons were reloaded and the caravan was all ready to go, Ayleurian guided the first wagon out of the circle and towards the west along the river. The others soon followed and everyone was on their way.

Ethiendar noticed that the eagle was no longer in sight.
