Out of Character (OOC):
This thread is to discuss all other game related stuff that is not In Character (IC).

I'm currently looking at the following two adventure locales, though I'm open to suggestions.

Dragon's Den: A wilderness adventure up a mountainside, with the final destination of a dragon's lair long thought to be dead. Based on the map from UK5: Eye of the Serpent. Characters will be members of an Adventurer's Guild sent to explore the valley and discover what treasures remain in the lair of the serpent.

Caverns of the Unknown: A delve into a long forgotten cavern system of unknown size. Characters will be members of an expedition sent to explore the newly discovered caves.

Whichever location is selected, both will be for parties of levels 2-5 using AD&D (with houserules) ruleset.

Re: Out of Character (OOC):
I've rolled abilities, and it's a solid field of numbers. I'm equally happy with either a cleric or a thief. I'd rather play a cleric than play in a party without a cleric. Please let me know if either of you have preferences for classes, and I'll work around you to make a complementary and enjoyable character.

DM, what guidelines do you have for selecting magic items? I'm thinking of a simple armor +1 or weapon +1(depending on class), along with either a potion or low-level scroll.

Re: Out of Character (OOC):
Well looking at your scores (Player3) you might consider the PHB bard variant. You'd be 3rd level with 3d6 HP, fight as a cleric, have 3 1st level druid spells, and operate as a 1st level thief.

A druid could be an option as well, you would also start out at 3rd level but have access to 2nd and 3rd level spells.

Well, the player(s) tells the DM the magic option they want; 1 permanent and 1 single use OR 3 single use items in your case. The player(s) may also tell the DM what sort of magic items they are looking for (e.g. I'd like some form of magical protection, preferably armor, and a scroll). The DM will then provide you with magic items.

Re: Out of Character (OOC):
Yeah I had the magic item question as well so I'm glad that got answered. I do have some other questions.

1->The standard rules indicate that multi-class characters would receive bonus spells for qualifying stat scores. Reading your notes seems to imply that multi-class would not. Is that true? If so, I'd humbly lobby for the standard rules version since multi class characters are already taking a hit on xp and hit points and you have an additional boon for humans.

2->Do magically enhanced stats count as qualifying for demi-human levels? So, for example, if I have a 17 in a stat and I get a +1 magic item that brings it to 18, can I then advance to the higher max level?

3->Warlock/Templar fighter types can cast scrolls of magic user/cleric type. Can they also use magic items from those classes?

4->When we roll stats can we assign the numbers to the stat we wish or are the stats in fixed order?

5->If we roll an 18 stat and have a +1 due to racial bonus can we add that 'extra' point to another stat or is it just lost?

Thanks for all your work on this. Really looks like to be shaping up to be a great game.

Don't feel the need to fill all those roles on your own, unless you want to. I expect we'll get some more players on board.

I'm not interested on the bard or druid options. If P2 goes with C/MU, I'll go with a thief. If P2 does not fill a cleric role, I'll take it. Either way is fine with me.

By all means..*please* take cleric role. As multi-class I'm going to be 2nd or 3rd to any single class character...and I'm ok with that. I'll only step in if the main can't handle the position for some reason. In the perhaps uncommon but not impossible event of the main cleric being disabled, put to sleep, or knocked silly and someone needs urgent healing then I'll step in. Depending on what faith/deity you chose I may even be your acolyte! :)

Last time I DM'd for the table-top group, they named their PCs after famous people who overdosed - Hendrix, Joplin, Ledger, quite creative for 10 PCs. After the TPK, they decided to try their luck with naming them after Presidents.

Sadly, the game fell apart due to real life and another player took the reins when we started again.

Re: Out of Character (OOC):
Yes, all classes (except the Monk and Bard) receive a 10% bonus if they qualify.

On another note, I updated the Barbarian (get 10% for high Strength and Constitution), also gets +2 damage on all melee attacks. The damage bonus for the Paladin was changed to +1 per 2 levels.

Finally, I've closed the game at 8 players. There's no rush on getting characters created so take time to discuss amongst yourselves about party make-up (if you like). But most of all, play the character you want to play.

Also, if no one has any preference on which adventure they like, then I'll just choose one.

I'm going for a thief.  It's doesn't hurt to have more than one, though.

Player 7, I'd recommend against an illusionist, because two of our players are straight mages, and I believe one multi-classed player is also.  A bard would be kind of cool.

Since the question came up in a PM, I figured I'd post here:

quote:
I notice you don't want to use the UA, but I was wondering if you'd allow from the same book, adjustments to thieving skills based on armor?  (Leather is normal, no armor is a bonus, studded leather and elven chain a minus.)

Thief skills will be modified by armor types as detailed in Unearthed Arcana. Any class that is eligible to use a Thief skill(s) will benefit (or be penalized) for use of armor. This includes (assassins, barbarians, bards, monks, rangers, and thieves).

I'm still debating what "route" to take for my fighter as all his stats are mid to high average except strength (essentially my usually fighter)

So far I'm debating those 3:
■ Militia: +1 to hit with Crossbows and Polearms.
■ Soldier: Soldiers gain a +2 AC bonus from shields, instead of the normal +1. In addition, +1 to hit with spear.
■ Templar: Templars may use cleric scrolls as if they were a a 1st level Cleric, though no spell may be higher than 3rd level. Cannot be of Evil alignment.

The Templar could allow a tie with the Cleric (Same temple maybe).

Re: Out of Character (OOC):
I'd encourage a melee focus as we'll need at least 2 main full-time melee fighters up front and we already have a large contingent of range combat characters. Of the 3 choices I'd probably take Soldier. Templar second though any scroll usage would probably be during non-combat time. I'm thinking we'd invest in some potions at some point in case the cleric gets taken out. Which gets back to having 2 full timers up front so the cleric doesn't 'have to be' front line all the time which means he has better 'up time' for the rest of us. My character is similar to the cleric where I can help out on front line occasionally but certainly not a main pillar to stand behind and my character prefers ranged combat. My character also doesn't have very many hit points.

IMPORTANT
Okay, I've finalized the rules with the exception of the sections on spellbooks (essentially the number of spells they can hold), the section on death rules, and how combat will be handled (i.e. initiative), and any info on hirelings.

With that said, I'd like to have everyone's sheet done by next Friday (Feb 6th) at the latest! Once your character is ready, I'll review it and if all is good, I'll add you under your character's name.

In addition, I'll need the following:
  •   Request for generic Magic Items (e.g.  Enchanted heavy armor or shield,  Scroll with a useful cleric spell)
  •   A list of desired known spells for spell-casters
  •   Request for any normal items not listed in the PHB (e.g. grappling hook, crampons)
  •   Request for any potential hirelings (e.g. torch bearers, shield bearer, porters)

Finally, I've modified the starting magic items list (essentially giving most a boost of one single use item). Double check the list for seletions.

There was something else but the wifey interupted my train of thought.

Re: Out of Character (OOC):
All, just to let you know that Player 7 has been removed from the game.

He had an issue with my request of switching his short swords to daggers for the purpose of two-weapon fighting. Since he was a halfling, I related it to a human wielding two long (or bastard) swords.

Prior to me reversing my decision and allowing him to use them, he announced "good luck on my game" and proceeded to delete his character sheet.

That said, a section of combat rules has been updated as follows:
Combat Update:
In lieu of any to Hit Bonus due to Strength, a Fighter (including all sub-classes, the bard, and the monk) may apply their reaction adjustment when using the following weapons: Dagger, Hand Axe, Horseman's Mace, Horseman's Military Pick, and Short Sword. In addition, a Fighter (including all sub-classes, the bard and the monk) may use any of these weapons as a secondary weapon.
Note:Characters are still restricted to weapons useable by their class and characters under 4' in height are limited to using weapons less than 2' in length as their secondary weapon.

Okay, players that have characters created have been renamed. In addition, I've sent magical item selections to most players. I hope to have the prologue up this weekend so we can officially start the game on Monday.

Again, thanks for the patience; between RL, the custom magic items, and the fact that all the tiny rule changes were not quite posted slowed me down. But blast it, I think we're good enough. I'll post summary of any rule changes to come.

Thanks.

Great posts so far folks. I'm looking to get everyone on board before having Tolfdir arrive. This is just a get to know you topic so RP away if you want.

Remember, each of you, in some capacity, has worked for Tolfdir before; whether it's gathering mushrooms and flowers for spell ingredients, or exploring some forgotten tomb to recover something for him.

I'll have family in town this weekend starting tonight (unexpected); but will monitor the action and post as needed. Thanks!

I'll throw this out there...

I'm in favor of asking our GM to put our characters' Race and "Class" as Tags. That leaves our Bio lines for other things, and gives a reminder to each other of who's who and who's what...

Any disagreement?

Example:

Dalscyr Nettlewill
Halfling Rogue

Bioline 2

Re: Out of Character (OOC):
I've got a question about our equipment "slots" or how many items we can carry. I didn't see on the list anything about armor/clothing, only weapons and shields and a few other things. Are we to assume that Armor is either not counted or occupies 1 slot, 2, or?

If we're going to use Unearthed Arcana armor rules, I'm just trying to wrap my head around how to configure my character to be an effective thief. Depending on how this gets answered, I'll probably not have Dalscyr wearing armor and only carrying just the barest of essentials so that he will be able to do his job. Hence the need for a hireling/henchman.

Dalscyr only has a STR of 10, so that means 5 items for unencumbered. A bow, quiver, dagger or sword and thieves' tools fills 4 of the 5 right? Armor might mean 5/5. He's gotta stay fast and light. I admit, I'm really rusty at AD&D, I'm more familiar with earlier and later versions, so please bear with me and help me out with suggestions. I hope I'm not holding things up, but this probably makes sense to get this all out now rather than get a couple days into a dungeon and find out we goofed somewhere. ;-) Been there before! LOL.

Or... maybe we just don't worry about it? (wink, wink)

Edit: Also, under Encumbrance, it says here 10 arrows is one item, but arrows are sold in a dozen in the book...?

Yes, armor fills one of the slots. As for the arrows, probably an oversight on my part.

LOL... If we get there and find out we don't have something we need, we can just send Gus and the mule back to town for it, while we kick back and tell campfire stories...

How about this for a solution? How about each of us donates a third of our remaing gold, and we'll just consider that between Gus, the Mule, and our Guide, that we've brought everything we needed along? I guess I've gotten soft by playing in games where little account was kept with regards to equipment, encumbrance and all of that. ;-)  I apologize, but for some reason I'm having a real mental hurdle with this right now. I'd be happy to just put my gold on account and when the time comes for something I would have needed, but didn't get around to putting on my sheet, that I just deduct the cost of it and we pretend Gus had it all along... Again, not trying to be a pain, just eager to get on the adventure. It must be the Kender in me. ;-)

Here's the list Dalscyr and Gus came up with for the mule. I've put the total cost down for which we can each pay a share to Tolfdir, or as I understand our contract, he will deduct it from our pay at the completion of the job. Dalscyr will pay for Gus, and Gus will pack Dalscyr's essentials, like food and bedding and whatnot. Feel free to add to this list of anything I might have missed. I did just think a canary might be a good idea... GM, could Dalscyr keep a canary in his pouch? ;-)

Mule                    20gp
  Tack                   5gp

Candles (25)                            25cp
Oil flasks (20)         20gp
10' Pole (5)                            15cp
20'x20' Canvas Tarp      2gp
Rope-Hemp (300')                24sp
Block&Tackle             5gp
Spikes (50)                             50cp
Torches(20)                             20cp
Arrows (5dz)             5gp
Arrows Silver-tip (10)  10gp
Lanterns (3)            30gp
Crowbar                         20sp
Hammers (2)                      5sp
Shovels (2)              4gp
Misc. Repair kit        10gp

We building a fortress or going on an adventure? 5 ten foot poles! What, we doing circus acts now on the side? List of items are ok if a bit over the top on quantity. If you were thinking of using the poles to hold up the tarp we can substitute any party member spears or staves for the task. Surprised you didn't go with a tent. Heck why not throw in an inflatable Jacuzzi. We probably could get a cleric to create water for it. I'm sure their god will understand. :)

Just in case it's not clear I'm bustin' chops here.

Like I said, Gus has Dalscyr's stuff, and besides he won't need a tent, we can just go back to the lodge...! ;-)

And I had to look in three different books and portable Jacuzzi was nowhere to be found. We'll need a GM's ruling on that one I suppose.

Re: Out of Character (OOC):
I (me, the player) have been a Boy Scout leader for several years now, and one thing I've learned in that time is to watch out for myself! There is nothing worse that planning a "menu" and having to rely on scouts to cook a meal. Between eggs getting broken along the trail, ingredients being forgotten, dirt and debris floating in the food, and everything tasting like a partially incinerated cat, group food only seems to work if you're camping with a group of world-class chefs who are completely outfitted with portable kitchens and pantries. I've learned that if I want to eat, I need to bring and prepare my own food... ;-)

So, I'm not sure about the rest of you besides Calaron who narrated stealing some cheese from breakfast, but Dalscyr has brought his own supply of edibles for himself, assuming that none of you can cook and that Myrah forgot. Dalscyr will need to tighten his belt many notches by the end of this outing, but at least he won't starve... I hope.

~~~~
Ok, all kidding aside, I thought we hired our guide to handle this sort of thing for us. Surely we'd have arranged that with her before moving out this morning. I mean this isn't our first rodeo, right?
And Gus is carrying Dalscyr's camping/cooking supplies...
Cal has everything he needs including rations.
You just had such a food focus for your character I thought that would carry over into the adventure.
---
Scouts...fond memory of tin foil cooking...that was until one kid started tossing in m80's into the fire...
Ground beef..mixed in 2-3 chopped vegetables..like potatoes, carrots, celery, etc. wrapped it up in tin foil...put in fire for like 20 minutes and voila..good meal to enjoy.
Well, we finally passed 100 In Character posts, so everyone receives 100 XPs! In addition, I'm giving everyone an additional 100 for Easter and another 100 for being patient with the game taking off.
New totals can be seen in the Party Details Thread.
Re: Out of Character (OOC):
Might I suggest that if a week goes by with little input, or at least here at first while we're still figuring each other and our characters out, that the DM gives some gentle nudges? I think that we might need a few little bumps from time to time until we get into the swing of playing off each other. I don't mind lots of DM input and I think there's a big difference between that and being railroady. A true Neutral referee works great around a table, but on rpol, we need just a little bit more "guidance".
For us players, what are our posting expectations? I know we all signed on with the understanding that we'd be posting about once a day, but we're far from that. I'm not complaining mind you, I'm super swamped right now and can probably manage only about 3 solid posts per week. I just think that characters who are quiet due to their players being busy or whatever should just fade into the background. We're all creative, so let's make sure we do our part well so that DM can do his well...
Ok, all of that was probably obvious, but I see a great grouping of players, characters and a DM who loves the game, and I'd hate to see it fizzle because we're not communicating well. I hate to sound off, but I've just been doing PbP long enough to know that if we all don't work together to keep the game moving, it will stall and go the way of so many others which have started off with high expectations but fizzle due to lost momentum...
Not a downer at all... More of a pep-talk going in. I'm not really very good at that, but picture Dalscyr on a pony riding down the line with his little sword waving and shouting, "FFFFFRRRREEEEDOOOOOMMMMM!" ... or something.
Well the posting guidelines state that there will be 2-4 posts a week. We are probably more on track for the latter. While I don't expect anyone to post daily, I do appreciate responses to IC posts. Even if it's posting "my guy yawns as the group discusses marching order".
Once we get in the caves, I'll post every 48 hours or so, regardless of who responds. If people want to let other PCs drive the bus, then so be it, we've got caves to explore.
Hey all, sadly I need to call it on this game. I thought I'd be up for recruiting additional players for the missing characters but my interest has waned in this game. I guess I was just a bit too grand with my plans for this great dungeon. I think it would be better suited to a table-top group. I still have an urge to DM but I think I'll go with a simpler rule set and a more organized adventure. Thanks for taking the time to play along and being good role players who play nice with one another.
