OK folks, we have four firm, maybe five PCs. With four players known to me from other games, including a survivor from iterations 1 and 2 of this one! So without wanting to jinx the whole enterprise hopefully player attrition will be low :)

Am going to do the chargen for two players so might take a little time. Hope to have the first game post up by Sunday.

OK four characters are done, and a fellow student of Jonathan's will probably be joining him in London. And there is a cousin waiting in the wings.

I won't get round to the game post today, but will try and post a breif bio of everyone explaining their connection to Jonathan.

Except a game post by Thursday.

Re: OOC Chat

I was thinking that Yates could be an uncle, my mother's brother.

I'm not sure Jonathan has any need of an actual bodyguard. The Cavendish family doesn't seem to be threatened by anything and he's a pretty ordinary young man. He's not even Lord DeVille at this point.

By the way, if the family name is DeVille, Jonathan will be Jonathan DeVille, Lord (title) of (place) where the place is the ancestral residence. Can we fill in those blanks? Also, how old is the title and what degree. I presume they are only Barons, but the title could have originated with the grandfather (created by Victoria, who ennobled lots of soldiers and industrialists) or could be older, of course, going back as far as George III in the 18th century.

If the title is older than that, the rank would probably be higher, most likely Earl, created as far back as the 15th century.

Re: OOC Chat

Will do some research on the title.

I was also thinking a bodyguard doesn't really fit. Yates is in his forties and of the same social class as you. How about he is an old family friend who also spent a lot of time with Jonathan when he was younger, teaching him his love of the outdoors and skills such as riding and shooting.

He does feel a strong sense of duty towards you, as he was close to your mother, so was happy to come along at his own expense to keep an eye on you.

Works for both of you?

Well Kit is the Black Sheep of the family as he scandalously dropped out of college to write pulp fiction under a pseudonym. Don't know how old he is yet but depending on the difference they were teenage friends or Kit was the cool older cousin Jonathan looked up to.

I thought that Kit is also funding his own passage in order to follow up on offers with a few contental publishing houses. Jonathan's parents are none too happy about it, but then again he is family and George and Father Alden will be there to keep an eye on things...

OK with both of you?

Hi folks, looking forward to playing with you all.

GM, that sounds good to me.  I was thinking similar ages, with Kit maybe a year or two older.  Hopefully he and Jonathan get on well, even if some of the elder Cavendishes are less well-disposed towards him.

Kit hasn't just rejected a respectable career in favour of writing ridiculous books, he also chooses to associate with Bohemians and other ne'er-do-wells.

That sounds fine to me. I wonder how Kit and Uncle George will get along? Kit must be the son of mother's brother, since his name is Cavendish.

Hang on, George must be mother's cousin, not her brother, or else his name would be Cavendish.

I agree that Bodyguard may seem a little crude, but there is definately a need for security.

Yates is a man of independant means, an retired Army officer, well placed in Boston society, and a personal friend of the Cavendish family.
George Yates has been mentoring Jonathan in the gentlemanly pursuits of hunting with horse and hounds, and shooting etc.

You can think of George as un uncle, but no actual relation.  George is all too aware of the hazards of life,
and as Jonathan has hardly left New England his whole life, but there certainly is a need to have trusted people around you.

Perhaps George can be the Boston Huntsmaster?  Crimson jacket and all?  Hunting with horse and hounds is still fashionable right?

Not so much in Boston, but perhaps if the Cavendish family has a country estate?

It might be interesting if Yates had been one of Mary Cavendish's suitors and still carries a torch. He stood in as a father figure for Jonathan, especially in terms of sports and such, which were not in Grandfather's ken.

Did he serve in the Great War? Does he know something of England?

No.  The Us Calvaly had a command HQ in France, but were never deployed to France themselves.

Served in 7th Cavalry under General Pershing in the Mexican Border War 1916-17.

Re: OOC Chat

No investiture required.  You just need proof of ID and of direct inheritance.  The second Jonathans dad was dead, ha was Lord Deville - even if he didn't know it.

Now, being recognised in polite society as a Peer of the Realm...  Now that's a different matter.

As a Nobleman, Jonathan is entitled to a seat in the British Houses of Parliament.  Now this requires an elaborate investiture ceremony,
and there's almost no chance of meeting the King...

Re: OOC Chat

For a forthcoming family gathering I just bought Fiasco, a GM-less story game designed to let the players create their own Coen Brothers type movie. The elevator pitch is below. The system is very simple and the rules are not required to play, only a willingness to contribute. Looking for 2-4 other players, drop me an rMail if interested and if I get enough will start the game.

Things can go wrong, fast...

Maybe some dude from youth group talked you into boosting a case of motor oil, but now your cousin is dead in a swamp and you killed him. Maybe you and your girlfriend figured you could scare your wife into a divorce, but things went pear-shaped and now a gang of cranked-up Mexicans with latex gloves and a pit bull are looking for you.

It seemed like such a good idea at the time...

Fiasco is inspired by cinematic tales of small time capers gone disastrously wrong – inspired by films like Blood Simple, Fargo, The Way of the Gun, Burn After Reading, and A Simple Plan. You’ll play ordinary people with powerful ambition and poor impulse control. There will be big dreams and flawed execution. It won’t go well for them, to put it mildly, and in the end it will probably all go south in a glorious heap of jealousy, murder, and recrimination. Lives and reputations will be lost, painful wisdom will be gained, and if you are really lucky, your guy just might end up back where he started.

Crawled back?  Ohhhh, I see when I said "shines the flashlight around the chamber to see if there is anything of interest" I made it sound like I was going back to the original chamber we started in, when I meant the new "chamber" the corpse was in.  Okay, I am back in the original chamber with everyone.

Sorry for the confusion.  Did I notice anything unusual or out of the ordinary when I was at the other end of the tunnel with the corpse?

Folks, have just purchased the new offering for the Gumshoe system called Ashen Stars. Looks great! Same system with a few rules wrinkles but aiming for a specific style of story (episodic sci-fi like Firefly or Star Trek).

Take a look at the links the in Game Intro for more info on the game:

link to another game

Would rather try recruit players I know first, so if you like the Gumshoe system and want to see how it works in spaaaace would be great to have you.

Don't I plan on starting formally until April at the earliest, but the earlier the better especially as there's a fair bit of co-operation during chargen .

A question about game rules.
So I think I rolled a jackpot and lost 6 points of Stability.

I didn't use and Spend, but if I had chosen to where would it be coming from?
Where do I see what is available?

And with a stability of 4 out of 10, can you give me a rough guide as to how my character should be affected.

Thanks.

You and Jonathan have spent the day directing some police detectives into the cellar of the Soran institute, where you had earlier discovered (and killed) evidence of human experiments.
Kit and Glenn have been to London to do some research on a revolting parasite that, if it exists, infected your three comrades in that same cellar.

Okay, a bit frustrated, here. I wanted to make a spend of my own but was told that my PC had already spent the money when he was being run by another player.

I don't remember how, but I got the impression from the Great Old One that we could do a spend of your points to get information.

Now, I need the Great Old One to reassure you that the spend is worthwhile, because you should always get something for a spend in the system.

To be really, crystal clear: Kit wouldn't have offered money if he didn't have it, in-character, but I was nudged in that direction metagamely by the GM.

Re: Game Rule question

OK, let me clarify my understanding of what happened:

During a confrontation with the thug following Kit and George there was an attempt to bribe the guy for info and Kit realised that he was greedy but shit-scared of the consequences, so he would need a large amount of money (i.e. a two-point spend) to betray his employers and disappear. As Kit was out of points I allowed a pre-spend on Jonathan's behalf.

There have been no spends yet, and there doesn't have to be. What's the guy going to do, complain ;)

So Kit told the guy that he'd ask his principal for money for the man. Now he will respond by offering twenty pounds, willing to haggle up to fifty. That all seems reasonable.

Actually, he should take the guy to an observable location and end the negotiation by smiling as he hands over some money and shaking hands as if the guy told him everything. If the watcher is watched, he won't be trusted by his boss.

Anyway, I'll post now then. Hopefully more time now. The summer is almost over... ahem... ;)
