The scion of a wealthy New England family on his mother's side, Jonathan has travelled to England for the reading of his father's will as heir to the Deville estates. Age 21
Captain George Yates
A retired Calvary captain and family friend, Yates taught Jonathan to ride, hunt and shoot and has always taken a paternal interest in Jonathan's welfare. Age 40s.
Christopher 'Kit' Cavendish
One of Jonathan's cousins on his mother's side, the black sheep of the family due to his career choice and bohemian lifestyle. Plans to visit potential publishers in the UK. Age 20s
Father Father Glenn Alden
A close confident of Johnathan's mother, he promised to protect, comfort and look after her son to the best of his ability. Plans some fraternal visits to the Anglican hierarchy. Age 28.

Rupert Everett
Junior partner at Jonathan's legal firm, Everett, Everett and Hobbes, "an anaemic-looking gentleman, with a high forehead and lank black hair".
Julius Everett
Senior parter of the law firm Everett, Everett and Hobbes, "a portly, red-faced old man"

Junior parter, "a lean, dark-haired middle aged fellow"

Manager Northumbrian and County Bank, "a small and rotund man, his round face glistening with sweat"

Joseph Deville
Jonathan's father, who recently passed away after two decades in an insane asylum.
Mary Deville ne Cavendish
Jonathan's monther, recently deceased, who moved back to live with her father in America after her divorce from Joseph.
Charles Deville
Jonathan's grandfather, a rather unpleasant man by all accounts, who died shortly before Joseph was comitted.
