OOC chat
I'd like to start by asking: how much do you think you can post? once a day? more? less?

In the other game I'm currently running, posting is once a day or less frequently, unless the stars align. I can post mostly in the evenings (GMT -4 here). What do you want, and what can you offer?

Re: OOC chat
I will be able to post for certain once every other day, and probably more frequently on certain days.  I work a 12-hour schedule in this sort of two days on, two days off thing.  I should be able to check in at least once a day, and depending on how involved the post needed, I would be able to post at least briefly even on work days.  I tend to update all of my games in chunks.  ;)

Re: OOC chat
I'm OK with that rhythm. I left a charsheet template that should be editable, so you can fill it with your character details. I'll study up on the details for this adventure, wait a bit to give other people a chance to join.

Caveat: I'm leaving for a holiday in a week. For two weeks since then, I'll probably not have much internet access. I think it's best if we wait to start the adventure proper until after. Of course, you and others can introduce yourselves, setup characters, etc. I'm sorry about this.

I've put the game as requesting new players, and I've also added the "Mature" tag. It means, specifically, that mature themes can feature in the game, but not that we'll have explicit sex/gore/fungus worship scenes. Please tell me, in private if you wish, if you want a particular theme not to feature at all, for instance because it is highly disturbing to you.

I do not have any particular triggers (and I do run adult games) so I am likely fine with anything that will come up.

If anything ends up pushing a button in play (an unlikely scenario) I will let you know.

Have fun on vacation, and I look forward to starting when you get back.  :)

I'll probably have Final Command's sheet up later tonight.

So weird. I think you should be able to now, but:

- I added the CS you sent me, anyway. It lost formatting, but at least it's there. Please tell me if you can edit that. I've set the "User Editable" flag a couple of times.

Re: OOC chat
He, since you ask. Hi Fin. I actually play, or will be playing, Matt Woo in The Strange Case of the Future World. :)

Okay, so here's what I've got.

Concept 1- An Inquisitive Nano who Crafts Unique Objects.
Concept 2- A Clumsy Glaive who Performs Feats of Strength.

I picture these two as fellow Bazians-- possibly automatons themselves? --who join Fin to support and protect it on its quest. I'd be willing to take a few inabilities or other negative traits if that helped make the concept work.

Concept 3- A Varjellen Jack who Reforges Completely. Cut off from its fellow Varjellen (for one reason or another), it struggles to fit in with humans as best it can. Has taken an interest in music and poetry despite a tin ear for both.
Concept 4- An Ephrem Nano who Moves Like A Cat. A young, shaman's apprentice sort of character, separated from her teacher while traveling but not overly concerned about it. She knows she'll see him again.

These two concepts don't have much to do with Baz, but the characters would be interested in helping out of good will alone.

Re: OOC chat
Woot Mr. Woo!  Or Siai. :D

Your fellow Bazians don't even necessarily have to be automatons, but they could be strong allies to the Weal.  The Clumsy Glaive could have been the "hands" for some of the more delicate automatons, or the Inquisitive Nano could have been a repair expert for those who required a bit more art than some of their fellow repair droids could manage.

I could also see the Varjellan as being a real hoot - he might have a tin ear for music and poetry, but for automatons trying to understand some of these "organic arts," he could be their teacher (maybe not long term, maybe he visited the Weal a few times while trying to find a human community to take him in).  The automatons don't know good poetry from bad, nor does the Varjellan, but dang it they're all trying!  :D

Re: OOC chat
Hmm. I think it's between the Clumsy Glaive and the Varjellen, in that case.

I'm sort of leaning toward playing a nano, though, either way. So even knowing this can't be an optimal build, I do sort of like the idea of a Clumsy Nano who Performs Feats of Strength. Slow, but not as dumb as he looks. Not so much a skilled fighter as a 'bag of tricks' wizard....who Bursts Through Walls. Well, at Tier 6 he does.

The Varjellen also leans toward versatility, and could be a nano just as easily as a jack. I'm sort of leaning toward it being an archetypal bard...minus the music or tale-telling...but *trying*. :p

That's what I was going for. :) A glass golem full of clear red fluid? Sounds like Numenera to me. Of all the things to survive millions of years into the future, I glad that was one of them.

...but maybe a little too on the nose for a character.

Alright, I think I'm decided on the nano part, one way or another. Now it's between the Varjellen who Reforges Completely and the Clumsy Bazian who Performs Feats of Strength.

Re: OOC chat
If your Clumsy Nano is more human-ish, or at least grew up around organics, he might be Fin's gateway into the world of actual people.  Not to mention someone people might find more approachable than Fin.  Heck, even the machines might have found him more approachable!

On the other hand, Fin might relate to a Varjellan a little bit more.  She might even be a little jealous, because even though he's organic, at least the Varjellan can open up and fix his insides directly.  Fin doesn't have an access panel, and that irks her.

Re: OOC chat
I think you've sold me on the Varjellen-- who I liked anyway, don't get me wrong. I think that'll make for the more interesting potential character development arc for both of them. :)

A 'bard', quote unquote, who can't play or tell tales, who merely watches closely, remembers, and tries to keep out of trouble... Sounds like something out of a Russian fairy tale. Especially once you add in the part about rearranging his organs to attempt any task. :D

On a mechanics note, correct me if I'm wrong: I believe my Tricks of the Trade will be Skilled with Defense (Speed) and Trained Without Armor, and my skill pick for jack would be Perception. If my understanding of the rules is right, then that means I'll be specialized in Speed defense while not wearing armor, specialized in visually perceiving, and then skilled in perceiving with all senses other than hearing (because this would cancel out the Varjellen's hearing inability). Do I have all that right?

Fin is, underneath the suit and helmet, female.  However, she has no real sexual identity, other than knowing how to keep her plumbing in order, and really doesn't understand the whole concept of organic mating rituals.  It's just so... messy.

Siai has a gender as a social construct, but no physiological gender. That is, the humans among whom he lives tend to think of him as male, and he has accepted the role while among them, but he finds the distinction more curious than anything else. He would accept being called she or it just as easily.

If all the seskii wanted was water and not, say, to eat me alive, I think it would be in-character for Siai to spare some. If varjellen are acclimatized to the desert, as some of the concept art seems to suggest, maybe I don't need much? And I could always forage for more. Using my flex skill, if necessary.

If it gives you a notable advantage, it would fall under the XP use rules as written, but otherwise... Just knock yourselves out.

Re: OOC chat
Hi, I was doing some writing on this campaign, considering possibilities, and I wanted to check up with you both. I haven't seen Siai post for the last days, and I wondered if, perhaps, I cut things too drastically to a new topic after Siai's description of the new land. The situation did allow (and in fact I was kinda expecting) a different response after the dodecahedron was disabled. I kinda took the reins after Fin posted. If you were expecting more time to fully explain Siai's mind, and I cut through that, I apologize.

So, a couple of questions:
- Are you both happy with this first bit of the adventure?
- Are you both free to post at least once a day, or do you need more time? I should still be able to post once a day.
- In light of the first paragraph, do you want me to rewind the action now to the Valley thread?

Re: OOC chat
I'm happy with the adventure thus far. I especially like your introductory posts for each 'chapter'. Very evocative. :)

I'm good with the current transition out of the valley. I've just had a very bad cold this week that's made it harder to think about writing than usual. I've also got a fairly busy summer coming up. Preparations to make. People to see off. I was okay with the previous posting rate, which was what you might call semi-daily.

I'll try and get something up tonight.

I should also be able to post semi-daily.  We're trying to sell our house/move, so things are a little hectic, so if I don't post for a day or two, I didn't forget you or am bored, I'm probably just trying to catch up on RL necessities.  :)

Something big is hidden in the village?  Fin in tempted to jack in, Shadowrunner style, but I fear her mind would melt.

I'll try to do an IC-post tomorrow - These last five days were terrible.  When we weren't having house showings (and thus I was sleeping elsewhere due to my night-shift schedule) we had workmen in the kitchen, updating things for picky potential buyers.  *throws up hands*  It's a post WWII one-story slab house, wadda ya think it's gonna be made of, solid gold?!

Re: OOC chat
I wouldn't consider it an asset, no. An inability is something that hinders the PC in tasks, and this would be an advantage. Specifically, knowing what to say or not to say , and how, requires being able to interact.

If you want to avoid Fin spilling the beans, given this inability that would have to feature in the convo, I'd consider a failure at this task Fin clamming up suddenly, and souring the mood of the conversation. Taerenai wouldn't learn anything you don't want to, but it would be harder for Fin to get what it wants, too.

... Unless you can convince me on how this inability helps you, concretely, with  cool roleplaying. That's always a possibility.

That's really weird. I'd swear I've given you XP before, in more than 1 increment. I need to check.

Update: I managed to find at least this: "You earn 4XP for your discoveries in the Lost Sea. After this is done, if she's still alive, Fin can advance level, or do something else with her XP."

So, it's at least 5. And I had been thinking I'd given you more. Helluva slip. Well, as I had said: you def deserve to go up in tier now, so you can do it. I'll be more careful about actually typing what I'm thinking.

Well, it looks like the house offer has fallen apart on both ends (our buyer backed out, another buyer is offering an insultingly low amount and won't negotiate higher, and we're within days of having to withdraw our offer for the other house because we no longer have a buyer for ours), so I'm back for a while!  Nothing like the Ninth World to take your mind off of things.

For C40rla and her abilities, since she was an infiltration and observation unit, I was thinking a Scan-like capacity to accurately evaluate the world around her, as well as a way to integrate and interact with automatons.  Also a shape-changing ability like the mestigophre, to be able to shift her appearance to attract less suspicion (which might be reflected in a higher-level disguise than her base level).

Ok, I think I can grant the abilities you want for C40rla. As for the shape-changing ability, I think we can treat it -the shapeshifting ability- as an "artifact": it will be powerful, you get to say how C40rla changes, and it will have a 1/20 depletion after the first use.

Ok, so I hilariously underestimated the amount of time it would take to finish packing, then moving, then setting up the new house.  I mean, the day of moving and initial setting up wasn't too bad, but then I was like, "Ok, a day free, I'll just go on the internet and update RPoL now..."

*404 internet not found*

Then we got that resolved and I was like, "Ok, a day free, I'll just go on the internet and update RPoL now..."

*404 air conditioner has stopped working - also, you need to go back to work now*

Then we got that resolved and I was like, well you get the drift...

*Suddenly, a wild out-of-town guest appears!*

Which was fun, but then I'm a month or so behind in all of my games and I feel rather bad about it.

So, yes, now I am a bit more better situated.  Much better house, reliable internet, working AC, work schedule more or less back to normal.  I hope to update all of my games within the next three-four days.

In fact, it's better if you narrate what happens (apart from the 4 base damage). For context, Ceara is badly hurt, but not yet near death.

Re: OOC chat
Thank you for such a wonderful game!  I have run a few Numenera campaigns face-to-face, but I haven't had one complete in play-by-post.  It's been a bizarre, wonderful run, just full of the weirdness and awe that makes Numenera so great.

And by all means, let's wrap up this tale!  :)

... I am, again, sorry about this.
I'm sorry I ghosted this game. Life got in the way, yes, but it's no excuse.

If you want, please give me a couple days to set up and let's end this game on a nice note.

Re: OOC chat
Ok, still toodling through my books on what I found - with Orkmal's mind and the help from the nano-spirits, can we effect a vaccine on the virus affecting the weal?  I know the nano-spirits said nothing would quite be the same, but since the alternative is eventual deactivation for a significant portion of the Weal, Molfeen would like to give the Weal the chance to choose.  Most are very practical and adaptable, so I had a feeling most would see it as a reasonable solution to the problem they presented Final Command with.

Also, regarding what else I found, probably something that builds, something that shields, perhaps something that can identify or store information?  Spitballing here as I cruise through my Technology book...

Re: OOC chat
You can certainly build a digital vaccine using the knowledge in the Cube. After all, Ormakal and their cronies devised the initial "virus". There's no end to the available knowledge contained in the little thing Fin got back. As for the cyphers, you get:
- A L7 Crimson builder: it's actually a very detailed set of plans, indications and schematics for building a large digital/physical repository of knowledge. It's a pretty bright red color. Once activated, it prints its contents using soil molecules from around itself to generate the printed material. Maybe set it down first. It then works independently for a month, letting the user access holoscreens of the schematics
- A L4 personal force shield. You could study it carefully to extrapolate how to build a larger shield for the Weal

Re: OOC chat
... And scene.

I think this is a very nice spot to end this adventure. I have enjoyed so much to be a part in
Fin's story. I want to thank you for the honor and pleasure of running this game.

(I'm sorry if the above sounded too short: I was replying from my phone.)

To expand: I'm floored at what we both made. I'm floored at what you made with the wild guesses I threw. I'm so, so proud of this. Thank you, again.

Re: OOC chat
Thank you so much for running this for me!  This had a particularly wonderful Ninth World feel - I felt off-balance in a good way.  I felt the danger of Fin's quest, the strangeness of the world as I ventured out into unknown territory, and the desperation of trying to hold it all together as she found her mother and tried her save her known family.  This game was such a delight for me!
