Westra begins to butcher the large animal with a stone knife. It looks like she should be done in about half an hour.

The ad-hoc band of wanderers sits for a time around the fire and contemplates their situation. Aldridge spends some time very carefully examining the fallen rocks near the back of tha cave.

Westra completes her task and produces a pile of freshly butchered smilodon meat (about 10 lbs.), a large uncured pelt and two piles of random animal parts and offal, one larger than the other.

It is now about the fourteenth hour.

"Would anyone like some of this meat to carry with them?" Westra asks the group. "I have no bag nor room on my person to carry any of it. Also, does anyone have any salt? Curing everything would help it last longer, especially these bits," she gestures at the small pile of animal parts, "which I could use to improve my healer's kit and keep all of you standing should we encounter any more wild beasts." Westra smiles ruefully at the carnage in front of her.

"You are also welcome to grab some meat to cook and eat now. There is too much for any one person." She grabs some of the meat and sets it on a stone that she places near the fire.

"It looks like it'll keep up for a while," Airdsgainne says to no one in particular, with a nod toward the whitewashed entrance.

"Did you see any way through those rocks, Aldridge?" he asks the bard, "I don't fancy meeting more teeth from behind."

With nothing better to do, Airdsgainne wanders around the cave himself (Perception check of the cave, Investigation check of the rocks).

"I think we can go further into the cave past these rocks," Aldridge says to Airdsgainne. "I can move the rocks, but if we're not careful we could cause a cave-in. There's several cracks in the ceiling that are being supported by the rock pillar. Can one of you, I don't know, summon a tree to form a new pillar? If someone can permanently support the ceiling, I can remove the rocks from a distance. Further in, I say!"

Airdsgainne inspects the cave.

While Airdsgainne inspects the cave, Aldridge turns his attention back to Westra and the bloody floor. "I have some salt to cure the meat, but I was planning on trading it with the next clan we come across. I'm willing to offer a pound of salt for the pelt and enough meat for me and Saphira here." The drake perked at the mention of her name. "And, Saphira will probably willing to carry any of the extra supplies for you at no added cost." The drake snorted. She didn't understand the tongue, but she'd heard that tone before.

After inspecting the ceiling, Airdsgainne scrambles up the rocks and places his hands on each side of the cracks, one a time, and they pull together until no trace of a seam can be found (cast Mending). He scrambles down with a gnomish grin.

"...Or you could also repair the ceiling," the bard says, impressed. "Who's strong enough to lift these rocks?"

Westra smiles around the dripping meat she holds up to her mouth. "Deal."

After a few minutes more of gnawing on the meat, Westra stands and begins throwing meat, animal parts, and Aldridge's offered salt into various bags hanging from Saphira's sides. "Take the pelt and do with it as you will," she says to Aldridge.

"Now," she says, wiping her hands on her trousers, "Will some of you big, strong men help me with these rocks? Aldridge, make sure I can see back there, would you?"

The five wanderers begin work on the heavy stones blocking the way into the cave. Although the lot of them are not exactly paragons of strength, they make up for it via perseverance. In relatively short order, the stones are cleared and the party can see down the passageway.

The passage leads to a thin underground stream, perhaps a hundred paces from the fallen rocks. As the party approaches the stream, the cave widens into a room.

The room is large, but flat and open. It's about a hundred paces front to back and perhaps a hundred and fifty side to side. The stream runs from the right to the left, as the party faces it. The ceiling is about 15 feet high.

Floating over the river, there is a large grey bulbous eye, rotating slowly toward the party. The eye is covered in tentacles that each have smaller eyes on the end. Suddenly…
