A Long Fall Chapter 2
The man seems to ignore Ortho's comments on the landshark, and escorts the party out into the streets.  He begins weaving around buildings and into what can only be described as the "Elf district."  The structures, while even more run down, have a particular style and several motifs.  Ortho is able to figure out the general plan for the town, and how it is cobbled together, and feels confident he could track down most any general building in the area.  The man takes the group to a small hill skirting the districts, with a old door and some recently-constructed windows.  He stares at the door, not going in, but it is clear that this is his home.  From the outside, there is nothing unusual of note.  It also seems that the house is empty, with his wife and children elsewhere.

"We could try fire," Dizzy whispers as they follow the man. "I feel like we always regret not trying fire. Also the bird thinks this is a terrible idea, and I want to be clear that's the only reason I'm doing it."

At the mention of fire, the man snaps out of his haze and looks bewildered.  "Fire?! You want to burn down my home?! It's a ghost, what do they care of fire?"

Damn he had sharp hearing.

"She's joking" Siv consoled him half-heartedly, throwing a weak smile Dizzy's way.

Siv was so used to the Tieflings muttering that it had faded into reassuring background noise. She had a point, as usual. They normally DID regret not just burning things down.

"Did you move your wife and child?"

Siv skirts the house looking for anything unusual.

"They are out of the house, yes.  But there is little room for them anywhere, I need to get my house back as soon as possible."

The "house" itself looks empty, and Sivrin sees nothing from the outside that would imply any sort of ghost inhabiting the place.

Though Menov took interest in the land shark dilemma, he did not outwardly show it. For now, they were hunting ghosts. He approached the house's door, getting a feel for the house's construction.

"We need magic, if we're to deal with the spirits." He said flatly before turning to the group.
"But we should see if there's something that can be done to appease them first. Banishing undead does not guarantee their return." Menov was unsure of this fact personally, but he had heard tales. Never before had he seen real ghosts. Certainly magicians posing as spirits, but never a phantom.

Only half listening to the conversation that the others were having, Ortho slowly moved towards the house. Though he didn't have any experience dealing with ghosts, he was rather skilled at deception and trickery. There was no telling if the man was being truthful or just trying to scam some people. Keeping tabs on the man, Ortho looks around the building. Be it ghosts or traps, there should be something that does not belong in this house.

Investigation of the house: 17 (1d20+3)

It might be best to take a look inside of the building. There might be some sort of ritual set up that is causing the ghosts to act up, or maybe it is something more mundane. We won't know until we start looking around.

Ortho also fails to find anything out of the ordinary, though there are few windows.  He knows that an investigation outside the "house" will be ineffective, and that the party will have to enter to learn more.  However, he finds no reason to distrust the man, as his words and actions seem true.

Siv stretches lazily and tests the door, trying to open it.

The door opens without problem, strangely unlocked.  Behind her, the man explains that the ghost doesn't act on a schedule, but often wakes them up or haunts them when they're alone.

From the doorway, Sivrin can see that the house is mostly one large room, with two smaller rooms to the left, and a kitchen area to the right.  A quiet shuffling comes from one of the rooms, but it's hard to tell which one.

Menov enters the room and takes a quick glance around. The house wasn't terribly large nor haunted. He wasn't sure what to expect, but this was not what he expected. A quick sniff of the air to judge how long it's been left alone, then he turned to his group.

"Let's split up."

Dizzy stands at the threshold of the cabin, abnormally hesitant to enter.

"Should we have like ... silver or some shit for this?" she asks as Menov casually passes her. Leaving her swords sheathed, she takes the yet unused pike from her armament and slowly - timidly, even - steps inside. If nothing assails her, she'll move to the kitchen and look in, without straying too far from Menov.

"This better not be like that damn witch."

A Long Fall Chapter 2
We rejoin our party of misfits.  Menov, the unofficial and relictant leader of the group, a former soldier with gaps in his memory.  He travels to slay monsters in hopes of avenging his fallen comrades.  Dizzy, the twice-cursed outcast with her menagerie of fey guardians.  She adventures to find an cure for her family curse that really just annoys her.  Ortho, the small-statured street-rat, who may have found a family with this odd group of adventurers.  Sivrin, a warrior-woman with an odd eye and a mysterious patron in the arcane arts.  She, and her trusty hammer, spread the influence of a shadowy individual who appears in her dreams, though she suspects there is more to the picture than she understands.

When the party was last heard from, they were seeking adventure in the town of Kholmsted (or fleeing a possible lynching in Frost Fjord). They had just entered the barrow-house of a desperate elf, who seemed rather tired despite not needing sleep.  His family was threatened by a sort of ghost, and the group had just begun their investigation.

Menov drew a torch and slowly scanned the darkened room. After getting a lay of the land, so to speak, he heard a noise. His eyes darted from room to room trying to guess which direction the noise came from. Yet the noise caught him off guard, and he could only guess. In that direction he was as confident as he could be and moved in accordance to his instincts.

Menov believes he heard the sounds from the nearer of the two rooms, though it is hard to be sure.  He enters the room and sees that it was clearly a barrow-tomb before being refitted.  Shelves on the walls now gold pots and pans, clothing and blankets, where bodies once rested.  A large, lumpy bed sits against a wall, and the windows let in poor lighting.  The room is filled with shadows and corners, despite its small size.  And unfortunately, Menov does not spot whatever arose such a clatter.

Dizzy notices that the rest of the house, while dirty, is generally in decent shape.  The presence of broken pottery does not fit with the rest of the house.  Upon closer inspection, she is able to find pieces of pottery stuck in the walls in a few locations, suggesting that the objects were thrown.

Ortho sticks by Menov. His mind races with the many different possible causes of the noise. He begins to search for the source of the noise. Considering how dirty and the house is, there should be traces left of something moving around.

He whispers to Menov "Hey, did you hear that? Any idea what that noise was? It wasn't the ghost was it? I mean, I don't think ghosts make noise... though I have never met a ghost before. Do you think they make noise?"

Ortho, after entering the room, believes that the noise must have come not only from this room, but more specifically from below the bed.  Looking underneath, there is nothing but a few small boxes and... something else.

It takes him several moments to examine this discovery, but he finally realizes that what he initially thought were scratches on the floor are actually runes forming a word in a language he does not understand.  The runes are shaped in a circle, about a foot or two in diameter, and there is nothing in the center.

Ortho moves over to Menov. Still whispering he says, "I think we need to get Sivrin. I found some runes in a circle under the bed."

Ortho moves off to find Sivrin and excitedly explains to her what he found."Listen to this Sivrin! So I was following Menov around. He totally needed protection from that ghost by the way. And we heard this noise which was probably the ghost, at least that is what I think. And so we went into a bedroom. We looked around and I looked under the bed and I found some weird runes in the shape of a ring. Could you take a look at them?"

Siv follows the Halfling into the room. Dust motes float in the dim light and she wonders what would possess any sensible soul to move right on in to a burial mound. She stoops to peer beneath the bed and wrinkles her nose at the scratchings on the floor board, as though the circle leaves a bad smell in her nose.
"Curious" She mutters raspily, examining the runes.

As Sivrin examines the runes, the general shape suggests magic, but unfortunately she cannot make out the language.  It looks Elvish, but more primal than any of the finer Elvish script she has seen.  It almost seems like something Dizzy would be in tune with.

Her finger traces the outer line of the circle.
It's not like any Elvish I've ever seen.

But they were definitely magical and it would be nice to know what they were for.

A Long Fall Chapter 2
The runes appear to be in a poorly written form of Sylvan, a language burned deep in the mind of Dizzy.  As she tries to read it, Dizzy realizes that it makes no sense grammatically, but might have a deeper meaning or purpose.  It uses words for "hole" and "door", but she feels that Sivrin might perhaps understand better.  Between the two, they are able to determine that it is a form of spell, carved into the floor to provide a sort of magical door, though it seems suited for only one particular individual.  Likely whoever wrote it, and possibly whoever is haunting this house.
