Brighid Spenser:
"No, she doesn't. Every time, she's heard a call for help or happened upon a situation."

"And you believe that?" Liadan asked. "She gets into more trouble than we ever did, she has to be looking for it."

Pinja slowly unwound her arms. Her cuts hurt. Her mouth hurt. She spotted a bottle of wine on the other side of the room and looked longingly at it, but it was out of reach.

Lek stood nearby, but not too close. He was still hoping Millie would go with him, but his heart sank as it looked like his sister was more devoted to Pinja than their father.

"I'll go ask Difyr if it's all right then," Millie said. She got to her feet and went in search of  Difyr, but she stopped by Lek. "I can't, Pinja needs attention and Difyr can't do everything herself. Sileas and Questa will be plenty of assistance for you." Before he could argue, Millie continued her search. Unable to find the healer, Millie stood undecided for a few moments before taking the bottle.

She headed back to Pinja. "I couldn't find Difyr, so just one small drink for now." She removed the cork from the bottle.

Pinja took the bottle and brought it to her lips. She began to drink. It burned the inside of her mouth where it was cut, and her stomach felt sick, but she wanted to get drunk and fast.

After a minute or two, Millie reached for the bottle. "That's enough, Pinja. Until I know Difyr says it is all right."

Pinja reluctantly gave up the bottle. Her head was beginning to spin but she was still more sober than she wanted to be.

"It should be fine, it helps... I hurt." Pinja winced and touched her stomach where Jack's cousin had wrote "Barren" with scissors. Difyr didn't think Pinja was barren, Difyr had a couple theories as to why Jack failed to get her pregnant during that month in the cabin. One theory had to do with where Pinja was in her cycle when Jack kidnapped her, and the stress she had been under being enough to throw it out of whack. Pinja frowned, even though the expression made her face hurt. The midwife had asked her about her cycle, both in the cabin and at Millie's shop. The midwife seemed pleased by Pinja's answers when she questioned Pinja in Millie's shop.

Pinja felt very scared, and very sick. She barely had enough time to get her head over the bucket before she threw up half the wine she had just drank.

Millie wished she could do more, she wished she could take Pinja's pain and fear away. She sat quietly near her. Millie reached out a few times to touch Pinja, to offer assurance but then pulled back each time, not wanting to cause Pinja more fear or discomfort.

At least with her hair cut off Pinja did not have to worry about it getting in the way while she vomited. When she was done throwing up, Pinja curled in a ball on her side next to the bucket. She still hurt and was thirsty.

Difyr came in with the tray. It had gotten heavier since she had left the kitchen, she was beginning to feel like her arms would fall off from the weight. She wanted to set the tray on the table- but there was a load of stuff piled on the table and no room for the tray. Difyr gritted her teeth.

"Please, it's heavy." Difyr gave Shawn the tray, then swiftly sorted what was on the table until there was room to set the tray down. "That will be good, thank you."
