"Yehudit almost got killed today, Ais. She lost her walking stick and couldn't defend herself." Liadan said. Without warning she burst into tears and her shoulders shook. "We survived the raid but she almost got killed."

"Your mother disappeared the night she was attacked, so she didn't run away to hide you. Your mother handled things differently than I would have, but we're different people and in different positions in life when it happened. She could have stayed and let me and Aislyn help her through it, but it was her choice. I don't think she was ever ashamed of you."

Aislyn wrapped her arms around Lia. "Until the raiders and the mermen are caught or killed, we are all in danger. That is the only reason I suggested teaching her some way to defend herself, even if she is in a sitting position. I've heard of blind warriors who have impressive sword skills. We just need to find someone to teach."

"She didn't hurry back when she found out she was going to have me either. I was never wanted... She hates me." Yehudit sniffled. "I want to stay with you."

"There's no one to teach her." Liadan said miserably.

"She doesn't hate you. If she hated you, she would have treated you like Sileas's real mother treated her. Your mother has never shown you anything but love." She elbowed Shawn when he muttered about suffocating love. "Your mother would never agree to you staying with us, though we would certainly love having you."

"That's not how Mama is. Sileas's birth mother probably never knew what real love is so she can't even fake it. Mama know how to fake it." Yeahudit said.

"Please, believe me, your mother loves you," Brie assured her. "She has never faked how much she cares about you. Never."

"Or we can try going sooner." Lek looked around the room for Sileas and was started by her absence. Lek expected her to be comforting her mother, or at least with Yehudit. But there were Yehudit and Aunt Brighid but no Sileas. "Where's Sileas?"

"She left just before they brought Uncle Aron and Yehudit in. She was saying something about the manor. Uncle Shawn went after her, so he must not have liked what she was saying."

Aislyn sighed. "If blind men can fight with swords, Yehudit can learn some fighting to be done sitting down. You can't keep her in a cocoon forever. She needs to learn."

"She has five other children, and those ones with Papa... She should just let me go." Yehudit said.

"Sileas could help us too." Lek said. "She knows how to fight if we have to fight anyone."

"I doubt she will ever let you go." Brie thought this was detrimental to the girl. Yehudit was of a marriageable age and should be finding her special someone. But that wasn't her place.
