In 21st century Australia I believe you... most of the US is the same, but not all of it. Think back to the Hippie generation with 'free love' and all sorts of partner swapping, sometimes with drugs to be sure, but not always. It still exists in a few places.
Then think of other societies ... Germany is somewhat more promiscuous than we are (can't speak for the rest of Europe) and even Sydney was a bit looser when I was there in the late '60s on R&R. Other places vary as well and polygamy is still extant ... as close as Northern Arizona and Southern Utah! Some "devout" Mormons still think of it as God's Intent. Then there were the Polynesians... they had sex about as often as we shake hands and considered it about the same, if you like it, do it, everyone can ask and not so many refuse, any more than you would refuse to shake hands with someone. Of course, since sex was everywhere and unencumbered, men didn't act like jerks either.
Now we transition to a different time, with medical ability to prevent unwanted conception and cure most all if not all STDs. These women haven't much inclination to settle down and feel free to carry on with whom they please when they please. Basically good for the Goose, Good for the Gander. Certainly there are women who expect to settle down in a marriage and raise a family, but these aren't those sorts of women for a variety of reasons.
Sdian isn't so mad that the girls had a fling as he is that they wouldn't fling with him, but then did with some total strangers. He thought they had all helped each other out of a spot and were happily working together; so his shorts got in a knot when they shred with others what they wouldn't share with him.
He feels close to both Nelly and Jurelda; he'd cheerfully please either and expects to take care of them when need be. He expects them to not be jealous of each other or any of the other girls ... and of course if they want to fool around, that is their right. If they want to settle down with someone, he will bid them well (but no longer feel any obligations toward them). So sort of a loose free love society with some of the Polynesian overtones ... I am aware that couples did become monogamous in Polynesian society by mutual agreement for as long as they both agreed to be monogamous.
