Life on Alizarin

It was the 01 Nov 2171 by the time the Dastavka surveyed Alizarin. Just 4300 miles in diameter, 57% of which is covered by water, the planet looked pleasantly hospitable, with similar atmosphere and even climate to earth. The small moon gives smaller tides, so the weather is milder, but there is abundant plant life, and  considerable animal life as well.

Alizarin is basically a prehistoric version of earth, with large dinosaur like creatures wandering around. It is not hard to imagine it as a mecca for hunters, and also a good place for hunting for supplies. At least one large herbivore was found to be edible. Similar to triceratops, you got 3 tons (0.25 dTons) of meat from just one carcass!

Alizarin, it seems, is just beyond the worlds known by the Vilani, and seems set to be a perfect location for setting up a military base of operations. Hence the Karl Marx vessel, John Locke, was sent with a number of colonists to Alizarin, where she will emptied her holds before going to recover the small craft, returning them to Alizarin to assist in building up the colony, before returning. From this point on, Alizarin was used as a supply depot.

To the average visitor in 2172, planet seems lifeless from a distance but as you approach you note a small island seems to have been tamed. On landing, you wonder whether the people have become wild on the planet, or whether they are in fact taming the planet. A rough bunch, the bar is still a couple of packing crates with an open keg controlled by the 'bartender', but the spirit here is undeniable.

The current date is towards the end of 2177, and there has been considerable effort in developing the starport to a Class B starbase in order to have significant repair facilities. The town is really a growing city, with significant perimeter defences that can kill any dinosaur they tries to eat them...a fact proven quite often. However, there is not that much outside the island. The current population of about 5 thousand are on this island, but that naturally creates interest in traveling out further. Problem is...the dinosaurs!

The Atmosphere is neither dense nor thin. The gravity is just 0.73G, high enough to live healthily but lower than earth. Both plants and animals grow large, very large, and the danger is not just from carnivores. Massive herbivores when angry can cause great damage defending themselves, and even when hungry they can bring down the 100 ft high trees as they eat. Massive reptilian birdlife soars through the skys, as large creatures crawl along the floor of the forest. Some of the creatures noted are as follows:

Quetzalcoatlus:
This purplish-gray furred flying creature has a 45’ wingspan. They are cumbersome gliders, easily overheated in bright sunlight. They generally make one pass and then fly away.

Move: 2 (Ground)/10 (Air), Weight: 95 lbs, SM: +5

Stegosaurus:
This quadruped herbivore is 20’ long with two ranks of rainbow-colored plates running along its back. The tail – its weapon – carries two great spikes. When attacking a mounted person, there is a 4-in-6 chance that the Stegosaurus swipes at the horse. Because the creature is so stupid, it has one turn for attacking even after killed.

Move: 4, Weight: 3.5 tons, SM: +3

Parasaurolophus:
This gentle herbivore, a type of Hadrosaurus, has ducklike bill and a skin-covered projection at the rear of its skull. It can move on two or four legs. It lives near water, but it feeds on tough land vegetation. It has excellent hearing, eyesight, swims well, and can “honk” through its tube when danger appears.

Move: 6, Weight: 2 tons, SM: +4

Dryptosaurus:
An active, small-sized carnivore, the snarler is an active climber and leaper, running on two legs or stalking on four. A snarler in an encounter always attacks from ambush – leaping down from trees or overhanging rocks, surprising a midnight campfire, etc. It snarls in a distinctive manner. They are good climbers of trees.

Move: 10, Weight: 130 lbs, SM: 0

Allosaurus:
The most effective of the carnivores, this biped is 30’ tall, runs with 6’ strides, and can swallow small animals whole. On the river, jawbones hunt in pairs. Their tails can be very dangerous as well.

Move: 11, Weight: 3 tons, SM: +5

Tyrannosaurus:
Huge at 40’ long, this 16’ tall biped carnivore is ponderous but mighty, with six-inch-long teeth.

Move: 17, Weight: 2.5 tons, SM: +5

In addition, strange fires have been seen moving through the undergrowth, though the source has not been identified. They have been chased out with fire trucks, seeming to be some sort of fire resistant animal that uses fire as protection, seemingly immune to laser weapons for that reason. Thee have been of some interest.

But in reality, there has been a lot of interest in finding the secrets of this planet, and developing it.
