General networks are a Terran thing, and would require a Terran computer to link with.

You head to the outpost that has reported the caverns. The temperature increases uncomfortably, about 37 degrees Celsius. The cavern entrance is small, about a yard across but very uneven and rocky.

How many guards do you ask for?

I think I only had 5 or 6 Terran Guards... I'm using them and the Terran computer.

Right. In addition to the Terran sociologist, Biologist and Geologist, so 10 others in total. They pack a weeks supply of food, anticipating the trip should only take a few days.You set . The corridor is full of stalagmites and stalactites, but is damp, with the water that created the features still common forming rivulets that run deeper into the planet. The lights you are wearing glistens off the damp rocks as your footsteps echo down the path, before you inevitably come to a fork after about 3 hours of heavy hiking.

Left or Right? At this point, there seems to be no difference, the caves branching off seemingly identical and seemingly endlessly. The water flows to the left.

OK, we are doing a day, not a week.  Lighten supplies to 2-3 days worth just in case.

Heading right leads to a larger cavern. Another 4 hours down that way, the cavern opens out into a large space with trickles running down the walls. You notice the warmth increase a little, but the humidity increase a lot, making it uncomfortable, to say the least. The biologist wants to stop to take samples and do some analysis.

The cavern continues on.

Make lots of notes and a rough map any way.
I two days, we'll try the left side for a few hours. Again 12 hours plus or minus total.

Do we have any ideas of what this could be useful for, besides hiding.

You map out the branch to the right, at least as far as you went, though it clearly continues on. The numerous fungi present a lot of opportunity for study to the Biologist, and he takes quite a few samples with some interest.

The interesting mineral deposits present the Geologist with some interest as well, and he too would like to study them in further detail.

Heading back, you have a large number of samples to carry, and the extra two days allows a number of geological samples to be identified, identifying a number of rare-earth minerals. However, petri-dish samples of the biological samples only has time to identify two species of fungi to be safe to eat, with 23 species not safe and one highly poisonous, likely resulting in rapid death! The poison has not been identified before.

You prepare for the next trip...do you do any different preparations?

Well one of the major points was not answered; is the water safe to drink with treatment if necessry?

We will seek a wheeled stretcher type device [rough terrain type, one large wheel and then balanced and steered by two men. Carries up to 500 pounds or so].  If not available, we should be able to make one in a day.   See  http://www.fernorescue.com/pro...e-stretcher-carriers

The water has a high calcium content, but is safe to drink, though filters might be recommended.

Best item available is a hovercart, outback model that has height restrictions somewhat relaxed. They are available in the work zones, though they need to be remote controlled, and are considered to unstable to be ridden.

How would it work over the uneven ground?

Of course the wheel would have issues as well.

By adjusting the altitude it is the best option, though the uneven ground makes it less stable. The wheel would have greater issues, as you noted.

Still a 8-12 hour trip. Once we have some idea of what is where we'll do some longer exploration trips.
We already get folks geared up to mine the rare minerals, but don't send anyone out just yet.

Starting at 0700, the trip this time down the left fork, following the rivulets of water from the fork? The trip to the fork is uneventful...though the temperature is still warm. You continue for another two hours before the path becomes increasingly steep and slippery. Some suggest ropes will be needed.
