Bonny smiles at Luretha and says, "You look dangerous with that. Not sure if that's acutely dangerous or dangerously cute. Ha! It's ok, just talking. Not making a move or anything. Have to try that line with Jurelda."

The Minnow Ii in the borderlands

In reply to Bonny Taching (msg # 29):

"I do too."

After about 50 miles west from Smalltown the forest, as mentioned, gave way to lightly wooded hills. The gravel trail began to wind up the hills avoiding rocky outcroppings that began to appear with increasing regularity and the thick forest gave way to less and less trees and the altitude got higher.

After another 10 miles the track came to a fast flowing river, at which point it turned south and traveled up the river for about 5 miles, coming to a wide alluvial plain where the river expanded to a stony plain nearly a mile wide but barely a foot deep. The track led across the plain, which looked safe.

The map indicates there is 155 miles to go, winding up the valley before crossing into the next valley. Light rain has started to fall.

The Minnow Ii in the borderlands

In reply to Bonny Taching (msg # 31):

The crossing is slow as you pick your way across the alluvial rock plain, so it is approaching mid morning by the time you start to climb back up the opposite incline. The stoney rise angles abruptly upwards, forcing a driving test for the drivers as the vehicles list sharply, but once you start the climb, it becomes more straightforward. The track is clearly defined, and over the next 25 miles you travel up the valley before crossing over a pass at 5,000 ft, before decending to a valley 3,000 ft above sea level. The travel speed is slow, but you notice magnetic rocks that would make contragrav travel hazardous, and this is compounded by the weather.

As you reach the valley floor, the light rain gives way to snow, which is beginning to be heavier and heavier. As you travel up the valley, the clear sections between the trees which mark the track get wider as the trees become more sparse. By the time you reach 3,500ft, you arrive at a lake at the head of the valley, but the track, which the map says heads up over the ridge, had disappeared completely.

In reply to Bonny Taching (msg # 33):

Despite the snow falling, the lightly wooded slopes comes down on light shale into the the lake ahead of you. There is evidence around of rockslides, but the trees growing among them indicate they were not recent. The ascent looks to be a difficult one, but is probably safe of you stay on the slowly disappearing track.

You have 110 miles to go by the map, but continuing in the snow is risky when you cannot see the track. It is now about midday. Jurelda is in charge, do you want to continue, or camp for the night and hope for better weather the next day?

We will need to start it and let it run for half an hour every three hours ... not as worried about the battery, as we have cables for that, but if the oil congeals we have to light a fire under it which is far less than optimum.

But it is the crankcase...the oil we ned to keep liquid, i am not sure the reactor alone will do that. As for security, yes, we certainly need that too, which is why two on duty each shift ...i wish we could afford to do three on, but we do need rest too.

"Electric motors have no crankcase, ma'am. There is only the oil inn the bearings that concern me, and the reactor will keep the reservoirs warm.

What is the duty roster?

I thought it had a low and high range gar box... if not, there is no need to start it every three hours. That's a load off.
Who want'son which shift?  I want a spot on Mid shift and Bonny would you take the wee hours of the Morning? Other wise ask for what you want.
