We get the book they get to see out ... obviously it doesn't have a lot of less recent places listed and quite a few places that we haven't been to very recently within Vilani territory listed instead.

Re: The Minnow II in the borderlands

The shuttle docks, and two teams get out. Two members head to the bridge to inspect the logs, while three members start to investigate the ship, looking for contraband. Rather than the usual half-hearted customs inspection, you immediately get the feeling of a serious military inspection by men who feel that their lives might indeed be threatened.

With good reason. They report of an attack some months ago that destroyed many ships and cost many lives, and they know of a large Terran fleet just one 2 parsec jump away. You get the impression they are very nervous as they go through the ships logs.

The second team of three, meanwhile, quickly recognised that this was not a standard Hero. The guns were an immediate giveaway. They start looking through panels, looking for false bulkheads...you are concerned that without a distraction they may actually find something. But Sdian is busy on the bridge with the first team...

And Nel is with me, but Jurelda and others are in back. Likely the first load of children they have seen in a while. Children can be a serious distraction with a lot of questions.

Yes, we are armed, as we have been attacked by pirates and criminal gangs, not that there is much difference.

We show them our various licenses and authority to act  as police in several sectors.

In reply to Sdian McGuire (msg # 931):

The inspectors on the bridge are impressed by the mercenary licences, but noting where they were issued, ask why you left the region to find work.

The three investigating bulkheads do find the children distracting, and turn instead to Bonny to take them down into the engine spaces. There are smugglers panels there you know about with the Terran mainframes...

Re: The Minnow II in the borderlands

Well we were tired of doing all the dirty work and then having the official forces come in and take all the credit, so we went back to trade as a way to make money. Fewer of our people get hurt or killed this way and as you don't know, we have a bunch of our children back there.

I'll have to leave the back to Jurelda and Bonnie.

Jurelda quietly asks them about the search warrant. They produce a document from the military, which, to their surprise, she reads through. Then she starts asking some difficult technical legal questions which unnerve the inspector in charge.

She is then able to convince him that removing panels in the engine room is dangerous, and therefore risking their health for legally questionable reasons was not warranted.

In reply to Bonny Taching (msg # 938):

The words 'But she's a woman ' were not actually spoken, but understood by all. Instead what the uncomfortable inspector actually said was

"But is it safe with all these kids around?"

Jurelda laughed, and pointed out that the children made it even more important to have the radioactive equipment behind bulkheads lined with lead on the other side.

The point seemed valid enough, and no more arguments were forthcoming. The inspectors moved on to the cargo bay, where all legitimate cargo with legitimate and authentic paperwork made the rest of the inspection straightforward. After half an hour, they returned to the bridge to report all clear.

The team on the bridge, finding nothing out of order, directed you to land at the planet, as there were few non military merchants willing to risk this system. They then got ready to depart.

Just 5,000 miles in diameter, the planet has 90% of its surface coveted by water. The high humidity is uncomfortable away from the temperate zones, with fungi spores making the air breath.

You slowly make your way to the planets surface, your scanners picking up debris from a battle a few years ago still locked in an orbit about the planet. From the size of the debris field, they have good reason to be nervous.

The starport is on a larger island in temperate waters. You land in a valley where several turrets overlook from the hilltops. It has all the feel of an active military base.
