At Argon, you are invited to a large building known as the "Colonial Office".

It is an odd structure, especially for Vilani, who have not colonised a planet in centuries.

Once inside, you are directed to a Vilani noble who introduces himself as being from Iishuni, sitting in a conference hall with a number of other Terrans. They ask if you are willing to help supply an unofficial Vilani colony on Sumerfelt on an ongoing basis. They provide the following information on the planet:

Sumerfelt(1620), Binary system with 3 Gas Giants and 8 moons, one of which is habitable
   6,000 miles dia, D class Starport, Atmosphere: Thin, 50% Surface Water, Pop: 10 k Kimashargur
Colonists have begun moving here in anticipation of an attack on Iishuni.

Thinking this might be a good outlet for some of their cargo (and also a possbile source of driving instructors) Bonny is definitely in favour of the venture. But she does wonder about the Terrans and Vilani mixing so freely.

A fair question. You would know of course that exploration within the Empire is banned. So having colonies outside of Imperial borders is not something any Vilani government would ever admit. After all, off the charts would not be accessible for regular Vilani ships anyway...

The jump into Ugemiriika revealed the same Iken waiting at a gas giant there, but your quick departure left their intentions uncertain. There was also a broadcast through the system informing you that travel to the Iishuni system required a permit or the ship could be repossessed.

So we seem to have an Iiken looking to get even with us... and they seem to have a very good ability to know where we are going and when.
Bonnie, Please go over the whole ship and look for a tracking device, likely one they can activate at will.

"Yes, boss. get back to you!" she says and heads off to scan everything, both direct trackers and for intermittant 'leaks' in other systems, including logs or signals in and out in case of any passive trackers.

The area is a heavy industrial region, with plenty of slums and while entries and exits are heavily controlled, what goes on in the slums generally stays in the slums.

There are 10 bars that are advertised as being open all hours.

1. Loaded Dawg. Advertises a good cheap local brew. Looks to be a place for port workers.
2. Wayfarers Hubbie. Definitely a seedy location that offers massages with the lot...you get the feeling you may get more than you bargain for here!
3. Iishuni Taijin. Just a bar. Nothing more is advertised.
4. Dark Corner. Someone was killed here recently, so a very rough location. Rumoured to be a mobster hangout.  Topless waiters every Tuesday and Thursday.
5. Good Cop. Sounds like anything but...
6. Handy Corner shoppe. This seems to be a favorite hangout for at least one mercenary gang.
7. Bent Inn. Non-descript place that has also seen it's share of violence. Seems to be associated with the Dark Corner in all the wrong ways.
8. Madaam Muffin's Place. Pleasures for guys and gals alike. All workers come with health certificates no more than a month old. There seems to be a medical practice in the same building...
9. Geonee Grease Monkeys. Lubricant for the tight tongued...cheap highly rated meals, non-Geonee may be asked to leave though.
10. Gentleman's Rest. There seems to be at least 4 cases of failure to pay child support that mention this location. The seem to have recently reduced their services...and possibly have the cheapest meals. Maybe to get customers back, or maybe they are just very cheap!

There are at least three locations that have been shut down in the last three months as well. Two due to drug abuse and a third due to child sex offenses, The latter one was burnt to the ground last week, when the emergency services were a little late in responding. Just 16 hours. They claim they never got the call, though the billowing black smoke just three blocks away makes that hard to believe. At least 6 of the alleged offenders were killed in the fire. Despite the crime rate, you get the idea that some crimes are not tolerated.

The tracker is passive until activated by being squeezed for 5 seconds. After a two minute delay it will then emit a ID pulse once every twenty minutes. Waveband and ID code are known to Bonny (but not me) and copied through to Sdian with a backup in Bonny's day log. It's a transparent round stick-on disk. Works for 72 hours but only ever tested on the ship. (Maybe available tech allows it to recharge somewhat from body heat.)

While the discussion regarding Terran computers gathers some interest, no-one says much of substance. You get the impression there is more interest than experience here, and several ask you about what you know of Terran computers and their programming.

Jurelda is vague on the subject, but hands you a menu when you ask about Geonee food. The menu is only that, and at reasonable prices. She orders somethings herself.

You note as the food comes that someone approaches Jurelda and asks whether she has any dealing with Terrans. From the way the question is asked, you get the impression she already knows the answer. When Jurelda is evasive, she mentions that someone called Riga Eshi has been asking about the Minnow...saying there was a Terran pirate as captain.

You can probably get an ID made locally...for a price. However, it is a significant process...

Streetwise to find a dealer, or make it yourself...you need to do the following:

a) create Birth Records
b) create school records/academic records
c) create accommodation records, either in a real family or an imaginary one. Both have risks, but finding a real one where parents have died is not a bad option....single mothers or orphanages are arguable better though. Data search may be needed to assist this.
d) create financial records
e) create a passport

Social skills would be needed to get access to most of these, plus Vilani Programming to modify Vilani databases once access has been obtained.

You should also spend 15 cp to purchase the Alternate Identity (Illegal) Advantage, worth [15], but if you put the role playing into it, I will contribute and amount commiserate with the effort put into the role playing!

That is correct. Vilani Programming is the skill of designing hard-worker programs, and understanding how to make changes to them, or otherwise use/abuse them. So you would have to use those other skills to access the databases, but to then modify the databases by adding in your identity without the proper access codes would require the Vilani Programming skill to get around those hard wired 'gates'.

OK, TY, so does Bonny know of a crewmember with top notch Vilani Programming skill?

No. She is probably best suited with the substitute skills of Engineer, Electrical and Electronic Repair, Computers. You would know that the databases are usually kept on a couple of secure HDD, with hard wired computers controlling access. Sometimes it is easier to get a separate computer and plug the HDDs into in order to modify the data simultaneously.

Thinking through, the system would likely be set up such that records could be added by individuals with the right privileges. Most false IDs would be created by such an individual who has been corrupted by a bribe, but even there there would be safeguards. Getting access to the database HDD would be most effective, but also most difficult. I would break the process down to the following steps:
- Access the computer design. Perhaps by pretending to be a certified maintainer, or breaking and entering and placing software bugs.
- Determine location of data to be modified.
- Determine method of modification. Bugs placed previously may help.
- Make changes.

Bearing in mind you are on a very tight military planet, this may not be the best location to create a false ID...it might even be easier to take the ID of pirates, though that has other risks.

OOC: Been struggling with this one for a while. problem is that I have no real cultural reference (unlike star wars, star trek, battlestar galactica or whatever I've not seen any films or series or read any fiction books about traveller universe). This feels like ad libbing in a vacuum for a process that I don't know so it's unlikely to end well, certainly as it seems Bonny has a current timeframe of maybe 12 or 16 hours which includes any travelling and other things like sleep and eating.
So, how's this: happy to take the 'establish a second ID' with Jurelda but just not here and now. Instead, how about:

"Hey, hon, the pirates steel stuff from folks. How 'bout we steal from them. Their IDs? Two of them, to be precise. One for you and one for me?" Bonny asks Jurelda. Bonny is gratified at the peer-recognition and takes some minutes to prepare a contact package for each of the few. Each package contains several methods of contacting her, bulletin boards, forums, getting advice on shares or news from the military personnel they work.. Each has a choice of several "from" tags, such as "BluAyes", "Goldigger" and so forth, but each aimed at her either with variaitions on the tag "ClevrGrl" or to include the separate words Clever and Girl. The majority are merely planet-wide but a few, for great urgency, may spread across several systems. Bonny explains that life takes her travelling a lot but she will check in whenever she can.

It does not seem like it, but they stayed in the planets atmosphere, so it was hard to get a clean scan.

You enter hyperspace, and come out a week later at Sumerfelt. What you know of this planet is little...a binary system with 3 Gas Giants and 8 moons, one of which is habitable. You come out at the habitable moon, 6,000 miles dia, with a D class Starport. The atmosphere is reported as thin, with about half of the surface permanently covered by water. The population is reported as around 10 thousand Kimashargur, farmers spread out in one area near a large flood plain. The weather seems cooler than Terran and there is a lot of snow, with very significant ice caps. It is just as well, as the Gas giants exert a lot more pull than Terras moon, resulting is a tidal range that is reported to be as much as 30 yards at the equator! Close to 15% of the planet is tidal zone, however.

The 'designated landing location' is a paddock beside a shed. It is suggested that you do a low pass first to clear the livestock. The livestock happen to be large woolly animals the size of cows but with heavy winter coats like sheep, which scatter when you pass over.

Turning, you land, and a large ATV truck, along with an ATV forklift make their way to you from the shed. Clearly, the Vilani penchant for beauracracy is not here.

There is the nearby township, and there is a river nearby that seems to feed a small dam from which fuel is pumped, but there is nothing else to the starport. It really is very basic.

A bit further is a second shed that looks to have some manufacturing. This may be where repairs are carried out, if needed. There are also two beam turrets and a heavy plasma turret overlooking the landing zone and the township.

There is a market for fresh produce, a couple of factories {carpentry, engineering workshop, hospital, pharmaceutical (the main export), abbatoirs and a food preservation ( mainly dehydration)}. The marketplace is a large hall where sellers come in from much further out to sell their wares, mainly to the factory workers who make up the majority of the towns inhabitants.

There is also a real estate agent, three schools, four militia stations (they also run the turrets) and a central courthouse. There are probably 3,000 houses, including about 200 townhouses in the city centre, sprawled over perhaps a 10 mile x 13 mile area, with the starport on the outer edge. There are no high rise buildings.

I believe it is an expatritate Vilani settlement that does not want the Vilani to know exists. The Kimashargur were dissidents who revolted against the Vilani at least once. The Vilani hold them in low regard. These would be considered traitors most likely.

Yes, Sdian is right. While many would hold fake IDs, it is likely that they aare loyal enough to each other, as sticking together beyond Vilani borders greatly enhances survival rates. Many children born here (it is a new colony, so no adults were born here) may not even have Vilani IDs at all.

Having had many discussions with Jurelda around their establishing fate identities (for off world use) with safety-net fake identities (on world) behind those, Bonnie is comfortable that she can take care of the tech engineering if someone else can take care* of the social engineering. You head in to the real estate agent. The first thing that stands out is how cheap land is, but how expensive buildings are! Land, you can pretty much claim if you go out a bit, but anything with a house on it starts at about $100,000, and goes up with price.

Sasha starts looking at a sizable piece of land, about 1,000 acres of hilly forest beside the river, starting about 1 mile upstream of the mine, or 4 miles from the township. They negotiate a price of just $20,000, so he buys it! It lacks any house though.

Going over to the town hall, inside on the second and third floor are numerous offices. It is on the third floor that the interstellar personnel offices are kept, along with the records. Mingo also wants to leave her past behind and make a new start here, so to drop her social stigma of her past, she is also applying for a new passport, as some of her past is noted in her old one.

They take Sasha's and Mingo's passport and note their biometrics, checking them there and then and recording them in the new passports. Mingo had burnt some pages out of hers, blaming an engine fire, to remove some details she did not like to admit to, and while that was frowned upon, they just took her old passport for destruction. Given pages were missing, they declared it a 'lost' passport.

Sasha's address is noted, as he is purchasing land, and this is documented in the passport as well. Noting his Romany passport is from very far away, they decide that it is beyond their remit to cancel the passport and allow him to keep both. The process takes about 3 hours and $500 each, and it is mid afternoon before Sasha and Mingo are heading back to get the paperwork for the property finalised.

The more observant wold note numerous security cameras and biometric locks on the doors.

The front door is a revolving one. No lock is visible.

Hacking the feed would need to have access to a cable to cut and modify. It may e tricky if they are optical.

The idea of a small base here is not bad, but he feels it is not an ideal location for the future.

He likes Bonny's idea of finding a way to make easily built sturdy homes as a sideline business.

Stone prefab generally works with manufactured stone, but on a low tech planet like this a stone cutter is likely the most efficient way of doing it, short of setting up a complex factory with a chemical industry to support it.

There is a significant load for the return trip. More than the 15 dtons they agreed to, in fact. You could easily take another 7 dtons, for which they offer $5,000 per dton if you are interested.

Sasha makes it clear that while he appreciates what you have done, he does at some point need to start out on his own, for his own family, and he would prefer to do that on good terms with you. He lists the reasons for doing it now;
-you have a set route, so you know who is who and where, and he is at the least secure place.
-you could use the space, both for PAX and cargo.
-the route does not need the vehicle.
-you have Bonny in the engine space. It is already crowded.
-you have Nelly as first aid.
-you have Leticia getting good at Navigation. Mingo can do a few trips as backup if needed.
-you could use a base here.
Trying not to be confrontational, he notes that the ship already has a much bigger crew than most merchant vessels this size, and the trained crew he is looking at taking long term are superfluous.

WE have a long discussion, Sdian is still not happy, but also does understand. With Sasha making housing stuff here, we can split the money 60 to Sdian -40 to him. I will look for a ship that he can start out with if he is interested. Costs are a function of many things, so he might be abe to get off cheap.  We will bring supplies and equipment for him and assist as we can.

Dahlpacker is a smaller colony. With no gas giants in the system and half the 5,000 mile dia world covered in water, it is a dry and arid place. The population is 1/10th of Summerfelt, and despite the standard atmosphere you can see why.

With no cargo space, your visit is just long enough to refuel, costing $10,000 with all fees, but with the lack of gas giants, your options are limited.

On the trip back to Iishuni via 1619 (2 GG, 1 Planet with methane oceans) I assume? Which planet/gas giant to you jump to?

You jump easily enough, and arrive back at the main base after passing through security.

Unloading is a simple affair, and you are told there will be a 3 day layover while the next loadout is prepared. Mingo also goes to find the stonecutter that Sasha has asked for...it is a large contraption (think the big roadworks plants) that uses waterjet cutting technology to cut through stone and recycle some of the water, thereby avoiding the replacement blade issue. But it is about 6 dtons, so will barely fit!

Kimashargur are Vilani who do not entirely agree with the Imperial way of doing things, and they are consequently relegated to second class citizenship within the Empire. They can be free thinkers in a rigidly controlled social structure, or disgruntled folk born into a lower caste and none to happy with it, but have not been caught breaking the law, yet. Bonny would likely be considered one, as would most of the crew. There was a Kimashargur rebellion several centuries ago that tried to leave the Vilani borders and set up a new alternative empire, but they were brutally crushed. The sector's near Terra were colonised in that rebellion.

He does indeed go over to the Iishun Colonial Office to make sure he doesn't have a problem.  I have people with too much initiative and not enough knowledge and background it seems.

"Official channels offer $4,000 per head for a bunk, might pay more for a cabin. Up to a hundred of them. Apparently mostly political refugees from the Imperial Counrt but some may be criminals. I too have stayed out of Prison, but Dad did slip in and grab a couple of his close friends out of one. They had much to say about it too. I have since talke to one or two others who manaaged to get out and have heard the stories... I have no intention of getting put in one.

You are stuck on my being young when I started, I was, but life deals the cards and then you have to play them. I hired you because I knew you and felt I could trust you more than anybody I didn't know.  You have proved me right many times over. We have been working together for years now and I trust you like I trust Nel, Luretha, and more than my younger wives perhaps. You are very much my right hand in trade, relations with merchants and officials.  At times I think you should be one of my wives, as we are so close, whileat other times I think that it might seem like a ball a nd chain to you, which I would not do to you. But I do want to keep you around. Bonnie is a strange one, very talented and yet almost too smart for her own good. Her belief in herself is sound in techncal ares, but not in the things you and I do ... at least not yet.

We do have those, although only a single cabin. My concerns were that she had agreed to something without my knowledge, so I am much relieved.  Minor criminals are not a problem so long as weknow who they are and what their crimes include. I am sure you understand that a computer fraud sort would make us quite wary of his or her being to close to the ships computers. Likewise someone who is inclined to lift other people's goods needs to be watched for different issues.

It can also mean we have come a long way from distant places, which don't update your data bases. We took a diplomat to [Vilani Home World] and back, a multi-year trip. We  have come to Iishuni fairly directly after that trip.

Bonny, you scared the hell out of me by going around me, unintesionaly perhaps, but suddenly you had talked to the officials and I had no idea of what you had said.  We are good, you made no mistakes inwhat you said, but I sure was concerned.
I am more than willing to let you help out with ship affairs, but please come talk to me first, so we don't have any surprises.  I know you got your nose bent out of shape and I am sorry, but please try to understand things from my perspective. Let's work together, all of us, rather than behind each others backs.
Jurelda, perhaps you could have headed this misunderstanding off before it became an issue. So long as we all know what the goals are and keep everyone in the loop, we will do much better.

Yes, we are open to passengers, but they come in several flavors, as I am sure you suspect, and the different sorts don't always mix well.

And NO, I am not doing anything based on our personal relations or lack there of... We seem to have a misunderstanding. Yes I am open to passengers, but I don't want the whole crew out there recruiting them. We absolutely need a central clearing for all these proposed possibilities. Surely you can see the position it could put me in if we have some high muckity muck and his family along with a couple of grubby criminals the locals are trying to ditch elsewhere. We ned to work together so we don't create a big problem. Things that draw attention to us are not desirable. Bonny looks back at Sdian, "Yes, I can see the position it could have put you in. Could have, but didn't. I was very careful. The 'misunderstanding' was obviously me taking the statement about always being open to passengers literally and the suggestion to talk to Security about passengers as permission to seek passengers. Won't do it again. If the mechanics contact me about passengers, I'll just close it down. That's assuming that that's what you want. Is it?"

Actually what I asked was that we confer before doing anything specific like that, so we don't have any misunderstandings. I want a relaxed and happy ship,but I also need to protect us. You were aware and did nothing wrong, but I was caught unaware and was veryconcerned about what might have happened or been agreed to. I have apologized, but also wanted you to understand why I reacted as I did.

Unless there's opportunity here to progress fake identities, Bonny tries to engage a driving instructor (heavy wheeled preferably, failing which, motorcycle) by day and a bit of studying programming into the evening.

The days 'ashore' pass all too quickly. Bonny's now disabused of the idea of handbrake turning Heavy Wheeled vehicles.

"Reporting for duty and, good to go, boss," she chimes in after checking statuses of critical systems.

So we go over the propsed cargo, the loading plan and passenger roster before loading anything.

They are making very efficient use of your 15 dTons...

The personnel are classed as ex military, wanted by Lemrukiri for unauthorized designs during the civil war. It seems that following their defeat, Lemrukiri lawyers were building up the cases and have started to bring in Imperial lawyers to fight the fight their Military lost. There are three individuals, two with partners and one with a family of a wife and four kids, aged 2 to 17.

Your contract specified that you keep 15 dTon free for the Colonial transport. But since you left the 4 dTon vehicle with Sasha, you have extra space, a total of 22 dTon. The Stone cutter has taken 6 dTon of that, leaving you with just one dTon extra space, after the contract space is considered. Hence, you are fine...

What building materials? ... I don't recall anything requested. Food is likely cheaper and better there. If you can find anything you think they could use, we can likely fit it in that one ton slot.

"Buy some foreign computers?" speculates Bonny, meaning beefier Terran ones.

A bit hard to find and expensive generally, unless you know something.

"You want me to ask my lady friends?" queries Bonny.
