Geography - Coridan

Planet Name: Coridan
Class : M
Moons or Rings: 1 moon
Gravity: 1.1 G
Climate: Standard atmosphere, 65% hydrosphere, cold temperature
Demographics : Billions of natives
Resources: Plentiful, minerals and metals

Location
Coridan is the fifth world of twelve orbiting a small yellow sun. It is close to several Corrino worlds, notably Salusa Secundus.

Climate
As a large world orbiting a rather dim sun in the outer edges of the habitable zone, Coridan is a cold world. Most of its cities are found along its equator. While colder than standard, the equatorial regions have enough temperate zones for significant agriculture in the summer months, and Coridan supports a population of more than two billion. It has a relatively standard atmosphere, even given the high density of the planet, which contributes to Coridan’s growth.

Geography
Coridan is known for its extensive mountain ranges, most particularly the Bendacons found on the western edge of its largest inhabited continent. The pressure of two colliding continental plates formed the Bendacon mountains, which were further shaped by the relatively common (in geological terms) ice ages on Coridan. The Bendacons were also the first mountains where valuable minerals were found and mined.

The three habitable continents (all equatorial) are large—easily capable of supporting the rather underpopulated inhabitants on Coridan. The rich mineral deposits on Coridan have also promoted a strong tradition of industry— the planet is known for its vast ore processing plants. Coridan cities are circular, with higher class and commercial buildings near the hub of the wheels, and less affluent and dirty industrial concerns radiating out to the spokes. During much of Coridan’s history, the downtrodden and underclass of Coridan lived in the outlying areas. There is a truly beautiful canyon called the Jorinal, found along the southern edge of the Tessen continent. It’s far enough south that ice covers the canyon, and glistening rock formations and spires make the canyon seem like a palace of light, when direct sunlight strikes them. It is considered the most widely known landmark on Coridan.

Civilization
The circular cities of Coridan follow the equator, where a temperate zone exists year round. In the early days, the closer to the city center one gets, the better the standard of living gets, but even in the outlying fringes the people of Coridan are educated. As Coridan matured, so too did its society, until the standard of living was slowly raised for all. Despite this, the society is very stratified, with a huge gap between Governors and senior technicians and the general workers, even skilled ones.

The cities are each run by governors, who in turn form the Council of Governors. They in turn elect a Chancellor, who acts as the Chief Executive of Coridan. Coridan is essentially an industrial world, with the still rich mineral deposits being mined, refined, used and shipped throughout the Empire.

History

As a mineral rich world, Coridan became an important strategic resource. Being in close proximity to Salusa Secundus, the Corrinos quickly brought the planet into their sphere of influence, and created a House-Minor owing allegiance to them to rule it , House , ruled unusually by an elected Chancellor.

In due course, the ever cunning Corrino saw Coridan as their personal alternative to the industrial prowess of Geidi Prime. The planet was unusual in its administrative nature since it had Minor-House status but was not ruled by a family. Instead, it was ruled by an appointed Chancellor. The Chancellor’s role became the way that the Corrinos used to maintain their tight control of the planet since they usually favoured one candidate and used all means available to have it elected.

The planet evolved from a simple mining world to that of an industrial power, which provides a ‘turn-key’ service ranging from complex mining to transformation of the ore into finished products. Not only that, but they also sell their expertise and have a growing series of companies that provide these same services across the Empire.
