Reflecting on Humanity 01

'Not a bad day' thought Max. Nobody gave him the full story, but he figured they'd made about forty tons. It was heartening, at least to him, to realize that producing the steel from scrap had lowered the carbon footprint to an almost non-threatening level. Pushing such concerns away, Max headed for home. The Pearson family was expecting number eighteen, and they were going for an ultrasound on tonight's episode. No one else at work watched the stuff, but they had their own families. Max still wasn't sure his mutation would allow that.
At least, watching the Pearson's show, he could engage vicariously with his dream.

While watching the show, there's a knock on his door.

Max heads to the door and opens it enough to look out. "Whaddayawant?" he mumbles, as if woke from a nap.
Blinking rapidly to suggest he's bleary-eyed, he looks to see who knocked at his door.

"Max! Thank god you're here!  Can I come in?"  It's Felipo (friends call him Fil) a co-worker and semi friend from your last construction job.

"Hey, uh... look man, I got in some trouble, you know.  I had a tip those Nets were a shoe in against Philly.  Heh Heh.  I bet it all!" He looks around nervously.

"I saw you on the news, you could get those goons off my back?  They're gonna kneecap me if I don't pay up tonight.  Or maybe let me stay so theys don't find me?"

"Fil. Fil. Fil."
"You know the only way you'll get out of this is ta go to the cops. If you want to hang around, I'll stand up for you. But I can't go calling out the hoods you owe money to, wouldn't be proper."

"Max, Yeah... I'll stay here, thanks a ton.  You know they got the cops in their pocket.  Hey, we could go to work together, if you're still workin' construction. Someone that can throw a chunk of asphalt like a frisbee oughtta be able to make a lot more, like a forklift operator without the cost of the forklift! Heh, heh."
