Mission 2: Lonely Moof

You drop out of hyperspace on the outskirts of the Bright Jewel system. It is not the busiest system in the galaxy, but it's busy enough that one more freighter drifting in at sublight speeds goes unnoticed.

Ord Mantell is an Imperial-controlled system, but they maintain only a token presence here. It's an open secret that the real power in this system is the criminal syndicate Black Sun.

Your long-range sensors detect a space station and several capital ships in orbit around the system's uninhabited fourth planet. A dreadnought, a Carrack cruiser, and a Lancer frigate are in evidence. This token force of mostly-outmoded ships shows just how much military might the Empire devotes to this system.

This is not to say that the system is devoid of protection. Second only to civilian traffic are a host of patrol vessels. They are a truly motley collection of hardware. Firespray patrol craft, Cloakshape fighters, and the occasional Skipray blastboat are only some specimens on display. They have no common markings, although most bear the scraped-away colours of this planet or that militia.

Ord Mantell itself is a mountainous planet. Its population is mainly centred in a few key cities. The planet's main export is metal. Their mines churn out ore for the refineries. Once the raw materials are loaded onto ships, they fly off into space.

Now that you are in the system, you have to avoid detection. Two strategies initially present themselves.

First, you could attempt to conceal the ship in an asteroid field. Maneuvering through a storm of debris is challenging enough. Doing it with minimal engine output, to avoid making an enormous sensor signature, promises to raise the odds.

Second, you could try to blend in with traffic. Just drifting around between the other ships, not getting in anyones' way, is fairly simple. All you'd need to do is fly casually. You may at some point be contacted by the system's patrols. Hopefully you can convince them that you have legitimate business in the system.

You have to keep up the act until you locate a suitable target. That could be minutes, or it could be days.

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

The Force:
The datapad the smuggler provides you is sealed using an Alliance code. You open it and find your next briefing.

Alpha Team,
The Empire has begun an unprecedented military buildup. All sectors are on high alert, and they're on full war production.

They're planning on hunting us down. We need to stay ahead of them. For that, we need intelligence.

Make your way to the Bright Jewel system. Begin recon of Ord Mantell. There's patrols in the area, so don't approach the planet. Use long-range sensors and avoid contact.

Optimal target is a bulk freighter with minimal escort leaving the planet. Locate a suitable target. Then intercept and capture it.

Your primary objective is to download the ship's navicomputer data. We need to know where it's been and where it's going. (Intelligence)

Secondary objectives:
 - Misinformation on the objective. Take steps to prevent the Empire from determining the purpose of the attack. (Counter-Intel)
 - Determine if any crew would be useful sources of information. Detain them as prisoners of war. (Personnel)
 - The Alliance always needs more materiel. Locate any useful cargo and secure it aboard your ship. (Resource Acquisition)
 - Destroy any escort craft and prevent your own ship from being damaged. (Space Superiority)

Facilitate as many of these as possible. (Support)

Following this mission, report to the outpost on planet Taul. Approach codes are provided in attached file.

May the Force be with you.

-- General Rieekan

Har'kess cranes his neck, trying to see what is written on the datapad, but you keep it away fairly easily. He gives up.

"I was told that you might have some extra supplies. The market for guns is hot right now. I can take them off your hands in exchange for credits." He buffs his clawlike fingernails. "Of course, service out here in the wilderness incurs a convenience charge."

Forim looks at his indicators and checks out the density of the asteroid field.

Forim says "It might be days before our target wanders along.  I got a pretty clear path in.  I am confident that I can get us in safe and sound, then we can wait.  We show up on less sensor logs that way too.  Anyone against that plan?" as he starts double checking systems, and getting ready to head in.

He grins like a child and hops into the copilot seat, ready to assist Forim as needed to navigate the asteroid field "Maybe we find a larger asteroid with a trajectory near the perimeter of the field to set down on?  Then we can wait without constantly risking life and limb.

Net 3 successes 4 advantages
Using the advantages to get us a great spot for viewing our future target, right as he passes into a sensor shadow...

Forim expertly pilots the ship into the perfect spot to keep an eye on the incoming and outgoing traffic.  As promised, the paint was not even scratched.

With a nod of satisfaction, he flips a few switches securing them to their perch.

"So, Who wants first shift?" he asks the assembled people.  Some look rather green with his twisting, turning, accelerating and decelerating.  He made it look easy, but the pilot knew what he did was going to be a good story.

The Royal Prize is an Action VI bulk transport. A relatively large vessel with considerable hauling capacity, it is also lightly armed and not very fast. However, like many Corellian models, they can be modified for better armament and speed.

The vessel is being escorted by two Z-95 Headhunters. The venerable starfighters are outdated by modern standards, but they are durable and pack a punch.

The Prize is on its way out of the system. Although well outside the mass shadow of the planet, the freighter's stock navigation software will require it to move even farther out of range before jumping. That sort of safety measure makes it possible for large ships to sail with skeleton crews of minimally-trained hands.

Once everyone is buckled in, Forim lifts the ship off.  The only warning the crew has is a "SITHSPIT WHERE DID THAT COME FROM" before a loud BANG reverberates around the ship.

After being jostled (fortunately she'd had time to buckle in) and having seen Ikki's missed shot she flipped on the comms and broadcast a message towards the freighter and her escort (and to those aboard her ship), "Royal Prize and escort.  This is Caddanra Manitu.  Please be aware that that shot was both your first and final warning.   Stand down your escort, power down your engines and prepare to be boarded.   Doing this will ensure that you and your escort can live to fly another day.   Doing otherwise will ensure your demise."

You detect some brief comm chatter between the ships you're assailing. Then the freighter's engines kick into high gear. They're accelerating to flank speed, which is a bit like watching a Hutt trying to pole-vault. Meanwhile, the Headhunters begin to circle around. In moments, they will be in position to fire.

Dienton having occupied the ventral turrent was about to fire at the escort ship when he heard Caddys comm message.  He had lined up his target, but when he heard warning shot he got confused "warning shots?!?" He murmered "why are we firing warning shots?", he shrugged and shifted his sights to the left of the incoming fighter and fired.  His shot went wide, but likely left the pilot half blind from the lasers light.

The Headhunters turn and race towards your ship. They're hardly the fastest or most agile starfighters, but they do have shields.

This round, all attacks on the Headhunters have 1S.

The Headhunters open fire with their laser cannons. Your ships' maneuvers and aggressive laser fire leave them at a disadvantage. The Sunset Shimmer is bracketed with lasers but none hit home.

The Force rolled 1 failure using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 1p 1a 1d 1C 1s.

Hearing a more firm stance from Caddy, Dienton settles into his seat and focuses on the readout.  The headhunters had swung in towards them and were approaching fast.  With a subtle shift of vectors, Dienton watched in amasement as Forim maneuvered the ship, bringing the headhunter into prime position, he breathed deep and pulled the trigger ..

Streaks of energy shot out of his turret, at first crashing against his opponents shields, then penetrating to the hull, drilling into fuel and ordinance.  The ship began to emit smoke, but held intact.

The Headhunters roll away under fire while the freighter banks away in the other direction. They come around and attack again.

The Z-95 Headhunters are sturdy ships, but slow. During their long circle to get back into firing position, the Rebels have time to react.

The first Headhunter comes apart. Its s-foils and engines break into pieces as the ship's body erupts into flame. Shards of superheated shrapnel fly through space on its last trajectory.

The other Headhunter changes course. It angles away from your ship. Your sensors detect a shift in the enemy's shields; he has oriented his shields to the rear, to make it harder for you to hit.

The Headhunter is not flying straight. The snubfighter dives and spins, trying to avoid being an easy target.

The freighter powers down its engines. The ship continues to drift forward, but it's all on inertia.

++Attention, pirates. We are powering down our engines. Please do not attack us.++

The Headhunter takes a few hits. You can see multiple sparks emitting from the snubfighter, and it looks like one of its two engines has shut down.

The pilot attempts to fly on a direct course away from the Sunset Shimmer. He throws a roll and a sideslip into his course, trying to avoid your fire.

The Force rolled 1 failure, 1 advantage using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 2a 2d.  Gain the advantage.

Still using evasive maneuvers, but you can negate it using Gain the advantage.

The Headhunter fails to comply. It maintains its maximum speed and is about to get out of range. Dienton fires. The snubfighter breaks apart.

Your ship approaches the Action VI Royal Prize. It is substantially bigger than your vessel, making it possible for your ship to enter their docking bay.

Your ship matches engine speeds and uses maneuvering jets to get closer. Their failure to reduce their speed to zero is making docking more difficult.

You are about to do something about this when you spot something alarming. Two panels on the Prizes' hull slide open. A pair of laser cannon turrets are ejected. They turn and take aim at your ship.

Fortunately, had not yet lowered your shields. Unfortunately, you don't have time to take evasive action.

The laser cannons fire. Their shots are rushed and inaccurate, even at point-blank range. Your ship is undamaged.

Forim was expecting this to happen, but he was looking at the wrong spot for the gun turrets.  He saw the flash and threw the ship into a barrel roll over the chassis of the bulk freighter.  Just as he sees the turrets starting to track him he reverses the spin of the roll and fires the reverse thrusters.  The secondary shots pass harmelessly besinde their ship, and he pulls in neatly behind the other ship.

He says to Caddy in a surprisingly calm voice as he preforms the maneuver.  "Tell them to power down the main reactor, or they will be set adrift and without communications.  We will NOT call anyone for their pickup.  They will starve to death.  That is something a pirate would do"  Just as he finishes talking, Forim pulls up above and below the target ship, outside its potential engine wash, but trying to stay out of its firing arcs.

The ship's guns are blown to scrap. One of them is merely disabled. The other one is more severely damaged. The gunnery pod breaks open with an explosion of atmosphere. A gand wearing a flight suit is hurled into space. He looks very surprised for a few moments.

After this all resistance ceases. Their ship slows to a stop. Forim pilots the Shimmer into the landing bay.

It's not a big landing bay, designed for shuttles and snubfighters. It's empty of ships and people, although it's cluttered with junk. Boxes, crates, barrels, tubes, and piles of scrap fill the area.

You are currently on the third level, in the 'cargo bay.'

With a smile he says "All clear for disembarking" as the ship settles on the landing gear

He flips a few switches putting the ship into standby mode, ready to be activated for a quick departure.

His services as a pilot no longer needed, he stands up and exits the cockpit.  He goes back to the common area and takes out his armored coat and checks the setting on his blaster pistol.  He double checks the additional blaster packs in his tunic and then says "Ready to go".

Dienton moves towards the gangway with carbine and stim packs at the ready.

Once he sees that his companions are ready to move he will barrel, full speed down the gangway, ducking behind the nearest cover untill he could confirm all is clear, he moves while all the while humming quietly <Da da da daaaaa, da da daaaa, da da da daaaaa, da da da da da>

The other thing that's floating around in his head is that this system is somewhat under the control of Black Sun. Any pirates working this system either have a deal with them, or are very desperate.

You make it to the communications station. The door is locked shut. As you are checking it, a voice inside shouts.

And then the door open and the man leaning on it stumbles, surprised... so she steps from her moment of cover to place her blaster firmly on exposed flesh... throat, forehead... somewhere where he'd feel the metallic cold of the weapon and hopefully stop him dead (without pulling the trigger).

She raises other hand and points an accusing finger at the other man in coveralls, "Where is the Captain of this ship?"  Her voice is cold and demanding and despite her pink hair and pleasant appearance, she cuts a start picture.

The crewman glances involuntarily up at the security holocam in the corner.

It's an astromech droid. Probably an R2 or an R3 series, judging by the cylindrical chassis and domed 'head'. It appears to be painted mostly black, with an odd white whorl on its dome.

Dienton enters the main computer room and begins a download. In only a few minutes, all the ship's navigation information will be on his datapad.

For the time being, you're stuck.

You case the rooms and decide that there isn't much here worth stealing. Someone has left some loose change lying around; you pocket 7 credits. You also gather a spare datapad and a glowrod.

You'll have to do a more thorough exam to be sure, but the hanger bay doesn't look like there's much in the way of valuables. There's some scrap metal that doesn't look like it's plated in chromium, and that toolbox probably contains hydrospanners rather than glow-pearls.

Dienton has a direct tap into the ship's main computer, though. According to the cargo manifest, the other bays have actual goods in them.

Bay 2 apparently has refined materials, ceramics, and droid parts. Bay 3, the lowest level, is apparently building materials and factory equipment.

Even as you peer over the ship's files, you are interrupted. Your download stops at 17%. Suddenly the screen changes display.

"And yet you had access to and to lock the comms room?" She had to wonder if this man was lying all things considered, but she led them back into the cargo hold and after taping their mouth, she left the pair of them in a 'hidden' corner where Forim could still keep an eye on them.

Then, with Dienton, she sees the console locked remotely.   Comm-ing the ship as a whole (since they control the comms this should be easily possible) she speaks, <"Captain Vinjagga... You've defied me three times.  Your people's lives are being sacrificed for your idiocy.   Your two escorts... your gun man.   And now the first of your comms-men.">  She fires a single shot, the whine of the blaster clearly not set to stun heard over the comms.   <"Crew of the Royal Prize.  Your captain has failed you.   I offered her your lives and she's thrown them away.   I now offer you your lives.   Bring your Captain and Haruko to me - alive.   Bring them both to cargo bay.  This is my final offer.  I will give you 10 minutes to decide before your second comms-man will fall....">  She flips the comms to an automated 'ticking' sound allowing the seconds to pass.

She then taps the desk where a small sticky-note may give Dienton a clue....

[So a total of no successes and 7 Advantages.   The ruling on advantages->triumph conversion would need to be considered here.  Regardless, I could use one advantage to notice something important.  A post-it note with a password stuck underneath the keyboard :-)

Dienton was staring at the screen, deciding whether to attempt a hack or not.  In reality, he was not a great tech, just the best they had at the moment and this was likely beyond his skill.

Caddy points out the note with a simple phrase on it and Dienton shrugged, probably wont hurt to try it.  He inputs the data and waits . .  hoping . .

They seem to have come to the conclusion that whichever one is more helpful is less likely to be used as a shield.

"Yes! Eight! Eight more. And then the captain."

"And Haruko."

Another pause. "What about the droid?"

Seeing the end of Caddy's result, Forim says "Here, let me have a shot.  Let me know what you have already tried" as he gets to work.  As he gets some input from Caddy he says "You inverted the order you are supposed to apply a reverse Brathak algorithm.  What you need to do is start by laying the groundwork with a sniffer application, then hit it with an organic insertion algorithm.  This lets the sniffer see the results, and feed the insertion with future guesses."

08:38, Today: Forim Luk rolled 1 success, 2 advantages using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 3a 3d 3b.
Spending 2 advantages to give the guy trying to hack us back a black.

Next he looks under the terminal to see what he is working with.  Unfortunatly the jumble of modified wires tells him nothing.  "We need to cut the external hard line coming into this terminal to prevent any further hacks, but I cannot find that line.  Dienton, do you know where it is?"

512 characters?  Dienton thought, I wonder if its just a bunch of 1s?  Not willing to risk it Dienton crawled under the console with Forim to see what the Duros was attempting to accomplish.  The tangle of wires was indeed . . well . . tangled.  This terminal was connected to the ships main computer, a central hub directing processing traffic all over the ship.  Dienton was able to locate and isolate the feed from the bridge, where he assumed, the counter commands were coming from.  He disconnected the data feed from the bridge.

Once that was complete, Dienton jogged over to the sensor control station across the hall and began looking at internal sensors.  With nimble fingers, he looked for a display of current congregated lifeforms onboard.

You get a read on current life forms. It seems that seven of them are congregating at a
turbolift one floor up. The access on this floor is only a few meters away! Fortunately, Onyx is preparing for just this eventuality, with his barricade of junk.

Three other lifeforms are on the bridge. Dienton disconnects them, preventing further interference from that sector. He checks the live feeds, trying to see who's still in the system.

Another slicer is still live in the ship's computer. They are doing something involving the ship's plumbing system.

He did not know enough about this ship to understand how the plumbing could be used against them, so decided to take a more direct route.

Digging deep into his programming courses back in Medschool, he had slept through most of them, he figured he had one good trick to try - "Hey Forim, Im going to try and kick this dude from the system entirely from here.  If I can crack the admin accounts, I can take his rights away" here Dienton explains in techno-babble all the incredibly brilliant things hes about to do, then he incorporates any suggestions that Forim might have (assuming 1 boost die)

After a tense moment Forim says "Awesome!  Now lets see if we can get control of the turbolift.  Ideally we can lower the compensator safeties on the turbolift, and then accelerate them up to a higher level.  That should make everyone pass out if we do it a few times. The crew list is a disorganized mess. It hasn't been updated in months, and a lot of the crew are missing entries in 90% of the fields.

There's only three names that seem properly updated. You look at the publicly available information.

Tyria Vinjagga, a human female, is captain. In her image she looks mid-thirties. No makeup, a stern expression.

Haruko, a Weequay, is listed as Security Chief. Like most weequay, his face is lined and his skin is folded. He has a scar across his neck, probably from a large cut. He glowers at you through his image.

R2-E3, an R-series droid. It's painted black, with its panels grey. There is a white swirl on its dome, that would look like a spiral from above.

Caddy scans the comm channels, and passes through just as something is being said.

" -- going down the turbolifts now."

She pauses, and everyone strains to hear.

"Understood. Tell us when you're at the doors.

A few moments pass.

"Ach, it's wet down here! Why is the floor soaking?"

The rebels get into combat position and wait, ready for a counter-attack.

It starts with the hold door opening. The door slides open, revealing a group of tough-looking males peering in. There is a rodian, an aquilish, a human, and a klatoonian, all clad in dirty coveralls. They are carrying an assortment of slugthrowers.

The seem surprised for some reason. Nevertheless, it doesn't take a moment for them to aim and fire their slugthrowers. A storm of steel erupts into the hall, ricocheting off the walls and creating a terrific noise.

The makeshift cover you have pulled into position in the hall is destroyed by the fire. Onyx, lurking behind it, is skimmed by several bullets.

In their eagerness to get their barrels in line through the doorway, the crew's thugs push their way into the doorway. Without intending to, they begin their invasion of the hall. They are now defended by nothing but liberal profanity.

As the barricade collapses around them, Dienton darts from cover and hugs the wall moving towards the thugs.  Knowing his weapon would not hit them at this range without advancing, there was little choice in the matter.  The sound of combat was all around, he pulled up short and lined his shot up on the Rodian - a halo of blue energy struck out towards the thug.

In his haste, Dienton forgot to find his own cover and was woefully exposed.

With the door to the hold opening rather than the turbolift door, Caddy can only turn to watch the others lay down suppressive fire.   She, instead, slides back into the shadows near the lift she that she doesn't provide a target and so that she can still be ready for anyone coming down via the lift.

Ikki quickly grabbed his axe and went running into the line of fire. Trying to keep himself as low as possible as he tries to get in close with his weapon. He wasn't going to try and kill anyone but a wound here or there would be more convincing either way. Hopefully they would be a little unerved by a man wielding an axe charging into on coming fire.

Three of the crew are knocked back and out by the counterattack. Two are merely stunned; one is nursing a serious wound.

The crew rapidly withdraw, trying to force their way back through the narrow doorway. They are impeded in this by another person appearing in the doorway.

"Get back there and get them!" She shouts at them. It is a human woman of average height, wearing a duster coat and a ferocious expression. Her hair is tied back in a severe bun. In one hand, she is holding a blaster pistol. In the other, a vibrosword.

The two crew remaining upright turn and continue to attack. They draw vibroblades and attack Ikki. Their blades cut him with near-misses. He is forced to defend himself with the haft of his axe, having trouble getting it into line for his next attack.

Unfortunately, they are also getting in the way of their captain. She is unable to get around them to launch her own attack. Captain Vinjagga aims her pistol at Dienton, snarling as she tries to aim around her subordinates in the clustered melee.

Her pistol whines and spits energy, but it hits nothing. Rather, it causes her minions to duck and lose morale.

Meanwhile, the turbolift halts at your floor but fails to open. Forim sees some smoke gradually filtering through the crack. Over the sound of gunfire he can faintly hear cursing.

A blade is driven through the door's crack. It wiggles, as if the wielder is attempting to force the door.

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

Forgot to mention before, but attacks on Captain Tyria Vinjagga or Haruko are upgraded by one degree, as they are Rivals.

Caddy blasts the axe blade as it drives through the turbolift doors. The blade shudders and falls onto the deck.

The turbolift door pops open, and a solid-seeming cloud of black smoke pours out. Coughing and choking, a pair of crew come out. They are each carrying a slugthrower and a vibroblade, although using them seems to be last on their mind right now.

Everyone in the turbolift area currently takes 1S to all attacks for smoke concealing targets

After them a weequay emerges from the turbolift after them. His hands are empty, until he reaches down to pick up the vibroaxe.

Like other weequay you have seen, this one has a stern expression and lined face. He has a thin line of hair around the back of his head, like a balding human male. He is wearing a coverall like the other crew, but the sleeves have been removed. His arms have strange tattoo-like swirls.

His vibroaxe is a different type of vibroaxe from the one you took from Tatooine. Rather than a thick wooden haft, this one is a long metal pole. The axe head is a thin spade-shaped blade, rather than a thick wedge of metal. The weequay, Haruko, hefts it lightly and with balance.

Haruko sees Caddy standing by the turbolift door and aims his weapon towards her. One of his own men, still blinded from smoke, gets in his way as he thrusts it forward. The vibrating axe blade slashes the man across the side of his head. The crewman falls screaming to the deck.

The weapon is unimpeded. Haruko slashes Caddy with the blade. Caddy is knocked off balance by the attack, and stumbles.

The Force rolled 2 successes, 3 threats, 1 triumph using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 2P 1A 2D 1s.  Haruko melee.
8 damage presoak.

Captain Vinjagga is stunned and wounded by Forim's blast, but remains on her feet. She replies with a blast of her own, carefully aimed at Forim.

The Force rolled 3 successes, 1 threat using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 3a 2D.  TV Ranged L.

Ikki spars with a klatoonian, each trying to get the upper hand. He's clearly got the advantage in weaponry, though, as the crewman only swings a vibroblade. He thrusts in desperation.

The Force rolled 1 failure using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 3a 2D.  Crew melee.

Peering over the edge Onyx observes the fighting going on around him. Instantly he sees Caddy a blade cutting into her. As caught up as he needs to be Onyx peers down the scope of his rifle.

Caddy had certainly not been expecting that despite being ready and waiting for her opponent to leave the lift.  For them to open the door, retrieve their weapon and then attack her without her having a chance to get out of the way was... well, they were doing better than she expect.   She's therefore not entirely surprised when the men in the lift, despite the choking gasses, come out swinging and... land heavy blows on the small woman and she cries out in distress.   She can barely stand and drops her blaster as her air fails her [Down to 1 HP].   She doesn't have much change though so she draw the vibro-knife and slices at the Haruko before stumbling away in the hope of finding a retreat.

With a battle cry, he swung his axe at the weequay with all his might. Although it was blocked by Haruko's nicer, more desirable axe. The force of the blow caused it to topple out his hands. Preparing for the next round, he eyes the the two crewmembers challenging them both.

Captain Tyria is thrown backwards, stunned and wounded. She collapses limply on the deck.

The crew member closest to her was just a moment ago savouring his apparent victory over Ikki. The pirate had only run a few meters, and that to engage another person rather than to flee, but he had triumphed! Then he realized that he was staring down the barrel of Forim's blaster and his captain had just been blasted. The crewman retreats. He runs out of the corridor back into the landing bay.

Haruko takes some hits, but he doesn't seem to have lost morale over it. He momentarily drops his axe blade, but it seems to be connected to his wrist by a thin wire. He snaps it up again, just in time to resume his attack.

His grimace of determination stays rock-solid as he hacks at this new challenger. He spins the blade in a tight spiral, cutting at Ikki.

Smacked about again, Caddy has to hold onto Dienton to stabilise herself once again as she falls and has to be injected her with the second stim.  "Thank you, Dienton."  She really isn't cut out for this type of thing!

Fortunately after the beating, the attack is over - almost as quickly as it began and staggers to her feet and looks around.  A couple of surrendered crew.  A stunned and knocked out captain and a Weequay... she has to suppress anger on seeing him on the floor.

Looking to the others, "We need to secure them and confirm that there are no others lurking aboard the ship."  She's still weak on her legs but will do her best to help the others do just that and will make sure they have cable ties and the like.   If Dienton decides to patch them up as they do this, she won't complain.  They'd survived the boarding raid thus far without killing anyone (The two fighter pilots and the gunner were outside!) and if truth be told, she preferred it that way.

[OOC: Recovered 2 Strain after combat.]

Taking a moment while this is still being completed, she ticks of their tasks in her mind:

quote:
Alpha Team,
The Empire has begun an unprecedented military buildup.

-- General Rieeka

So far as she can tell, they've covered all the bases other than ensuring that the crew believe they were attacked by pirates.   Following Forim into the computer room and gesturing for the other to follow she quietly speaks, "I think we're covered.  All we need to do now is throw the Empire off our trail.  I suggest we let one of the crew go - not the Captain - one who hasn't heard us talking but has heard the 'pirates' talking.  Framing 'Black Sun' shouldn't be hard.   Also, don't forget, we've not recovered the droid and we don't want it ejecting on us considering it has seen us."

[This is most definitely spoken out of earshot of the prisoners - as noted in my previous post.  Also note that the two guys were taken out of the computer room and back to the hold quite some time ago.  This too was in one of my posts.  I'm not sure where Caddy broke cover then ;-)]

Caddy just smiles at Dienton.   "Do you really want your identity touted across the galaxy?  This is not the first time the Rebellion has had to deal with situations like this.  You heard me.  I tried every possible avenue to end this conflict without further bloodshed."

She takes a breath, "Now there are several tasks we still need to complete.  The first is misinformation.  The crewman who was hacked at by the Weequay... he hasn't seen us.  We should heal him, provide him with a 'cover story' - maybe some pirate talk and a few blaster shots, and then give him a chance to reach an escape pod while the ship is primed to 'explode'.  He'll provide all the cover we need."

"As for the others.  They can be brought back with us.   Our command can decide what to do with them."  Gaining loyalty from this group would be next to impossible but Caddy was willing to try.  For now though, the Captain and members of her crew were a 'loss' and any gain would be a positive.

"Before we do that though, we need to find the hacker and the droid...."

[OOC: Count Sofar:

Accounted:
2 Pilots (Unknown - Dead), 1 Gunner (Gand - Dead), 2 from the Computer Room, 5 from the Hold (Rodian, Aquilish, Human, Klatoonian, Human Female ('Captain Tyria Vinjagga') [Captain], 3 from the Turbolift (Weequay - 'Haruko' [Security Chief], 2 Human - 1 Possibly Dying due the cut from Haruko's Axe)

Outstanding:
R2-E3, an R-series droid - outstanding (possibly our hacker)

Summary:
So we were told 10 and a droid... possibly excluding the two escort pilots.   We are 11 sofar though maybe the guy who told us had already taken into account the dead gunner.  Alternately, he might have been lying to us (though I'd like to think he wasn't!)   So that just leaves us our hacker and our droid - possibly the same 'person'.]

Forim just sighs and says "You have never done undercover work before, have you?  Never break character in enemy territory.  Ever.  We pretty much have to take everyone now.  Maybe we "

Forim starts to work on the internal scanners to see if he can pinpoint the lifeforms.

09:59, Today: Forim Luk rolled 2 successes, 1 threat using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 3A 2d 1b.  Rolling Computers.

Her Royal Highness, Princess Ulanda Arakania almost burst into laughter but... stifles it with a smile for Forim, a really genuine smile that lights up her features, "Everyone deserves an opportunity to join the alliance.  The captain out there showed strength of character and her people showed loyalty.   These are admirable traits and given an opportunity, who knows, they could be allies in this struggle.   This will not have been an easy 'start' to any relationship, but when has that ever stopped us?"

Forim responds "For sure, but under the cameras is not the best place for this debate, if our plan was to appear as pirates.  You heard his accent" he said gesturing at Dienton "That was all so we could leave people behind to tell the story."

He says "Now we have two options.  Take everyone and leave the ship, wiping the memory so no recordings can be found.  We look like slavers.  Or we take the ship too, it just falls off the radar.  No one has any information to make a guess as to what happened.  Change the paint, IFF and scoring, and engine signature and this is a new ship our employers got from some other means."

"I am not debating what we should do with the prisoners, just your lack of discretion when it comes to discussing it and our employers by name under full surveillance."

Ikki sighed with relief as the fight was over. That previous attack hurt a fair bit yet another scar added to Sorlock.
The first thing he started to do while everyone was talking was acquiring Haruko's axe. Hopefully the wire would come off easily if not he'd look for the keys or even cut the wire with his own axe. Either way he was taking that axe.

The next step was to take the others weapons. Making be a nice stockpile of the slugthrowers and taking the Captain's Vibrosword. He looks around to see who was interested in each of them.

Ikki simply stood by and waited for everyone to say their piece before waiting around. Taking the ship sounded like a tall order, they had already tried to steal the last ship after all.

OOC: If I need to roll anything for searching the crew please roll for me.

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

The loot is a sorry lot.

Each of the crewmembers has a slugthrower pistol, but they are not in good condition. They are greasy and dirty, with many parts badly worn. You're surprised none of them backfired, as slugthrowers are known to do when poorly maintained. In addition, many of them seem to be made for different calibers of bullets; even if they were in mint condition, keeping them loaded would be a logistical pain.

The vibroblades are no better. Each is as sharp as a Coruscant courtesans' glare, but they seem to achieved this result by sharpening the blades manually, with a whetstone. This is the correct way to sharpen a regular knife, but it will cause a vibroblade to rattle apart.

None of these weapons seems worth hording. The officers' tools are a different story.

The weequay security officer's vibroaxe is a two-meter long pole of hollow metal with a weight on the end and an axe blade on the other. The machinery of the vibroengine is built into a pole that doubles as a spike.

The captain's own blaster is a standard heavy blaster pistol with a 'hot-shot' modification: It has had the trigger guard removed. This makes it a lot easier to accidentally misfire the gun, but it allows you to be slightly quicker on the draw.

The captain's vibrosword is a typical model of the esoteric art form. No-one mass produces vibroswords. Each is made individually. This one has silver-plated filigree for a basket hilt, like the old-fashioned sea pirates of yore.

Both the captain and the weequay have commlinks, and they are each carrying a stimpack. The weequay is carrying a pair of binders and a restraining bolt.

****

During the tally, Dienton checks the navicomputer. When he checks the download, he double-takes.

The download is now at 2.25%.

Dienton quickly assesses the situation and an explanation becomes clear. The navicomputer is now storing several petabytes of data, far more than it was previously. Your download is still chugging along, but at this rate it will be several standard years before it is completed. Of course, your datapad will overload long before this.

Obviously something is wrong.

When told about the events... "The hacker and-or the droid.   We need to find him... and longer we dawdle here, the more chance another freighter will come by - or indeed other pirates."  Honestly, pirates needed to talk so inanely?

"Onyx... why don't you and Forim make for the bridge.  We need to get the ship moving.  We don't now have the option of taking 'just' the data.   Dienton, since you can track the hacker, why don't you and Ikki hunt him or them down.   I'll stay here with the prisoners and and prepare my little 'script' for our escapee."

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

Dienton is not happy.  Is . .  not . . happy.  It was one thing when they were going to steal some cargo and leave the ship, maybe interrogate the crew.  He understood the need to sacrifice material and he had no issues taking a life when it was necessary, but this smacked of tactics that . . he could not support them.

Their order were to "Determine if any crew would be useful sources of information." THEN detain them.  They had not determined anything.  They were NOT ordered to bring a ship plus all hands to an alliance outpost, where they would have to be imprisoned for life or press ganged into service.  That was NOT what their orders were and was not in the Alliance's best interest - or even remotely good, by Dienton's estimation.

Dienton looked up at Caddy and glances at Forim, his frown deepening "I will work to accomplish our objectives.  I . Will . . NOT be a party to this . .  insanity.  We just finished an attack on an imperial outpost - and your worried about these people identifying you?  Our ship and probably our faces are already known.  Wiping the ships records will be all the protection we need.  You think these people will be running to the empire to point us out of a lineup?  Your crazy."  he pauses and takes a deep breath  "If you want to take the ship to a second site and leave the crew alive to tell the story, fine.  If you want to STEAL the ship like the common gutter-born thief you apparently are, then . . count me out.  Ohh, and there is no way I'm leaving you alone with these people.  I can try to find the hacker from here."

Dienton crosses his arms and backs up two steps.  He is painfully aware that the computer is where he needs to be, but until this was resolved . . .

Forim chuckles and says "And now she uses our names"  Before anyone can react, he pulls out his hodlout and shoots blue stun bolts into any of the still conscious prisoners. "There is a 90% chance that hacker is listening and recording our conversation.  He will sell it to the Empire thanks to everyone's efforts to make it clear we don't want that to happen.  This ship is not under our control yet, so lets stop bickering and get to work.  When the ship is fully under our control and we are not being recorded, lets have a private talk.  Maybe we can still salvage part of our mission.  They know who we are with, but hopefully they dont know the item we really came looking for"  He stresses the word Item in hopes that his companions pick up on the fact that is not in fact what they are looking for, and might still give the empire some false information...

"If you want to keep fighting ill stun you both and put you with the prisoners.  Now can we get along until the situation is clear?"

There's two logical places to search for the hacker. One is the bridge. The other is in the engineering section of the ship. That is on the aft section of this deck. It is also where you saw the droid retreat to. You must go across the landing bay and through the crew quarters.

Dienton, heading back to the ship, and Onyx, hunting the hacker in the engineering bay, are the first to see it. The crewmember who retreated from battle, lying flat on his back on the deck. He is right near the open door leading to the aft compartment. He appears to be unconscious -- or dead.

[Grrr.... Ok.   So...
* Forim is in the computer room... after heading out to shoot some prisoners.
* Onyx is hunting in Engineering bay... and also with his hand on the shoulder of Forim in the Computer room.
* Dienton is the engineering bay.
* I'm in the computer room.
* And Ikki... was tying up prisoners in the engineering bay.]

Dienton had a point... their faces probably were plastered 'somewhere' though whether their faces had made it 'all over the galaxy' was another matter entirely.  Even the Empire didn't quite work that well!  That said, it was rather ironic that he'd called her (and she assumed he was talking to both Forim and her) a thief considering he seemed more than happy to take the ship and gear from their previous mission and yet here, taking resource and a ship from the same 'Empire' was counter to his beliefs?  "Dienton...."  She had more to say but the Chadra-Fan turned and walked out of the computer room (not to mention Forim's show of force with the stun gun!)

Hurt, she stewed.  Forim was still hogging the console and her 'team' was far from it.  We fight a fight against the Empire and this ship provides a service to the Empire.  How is it stealing?  You seemed happy enough, Dienton, to 'fight the good fight' when the icon was bluntly obvious and yet this ship is still Empire-sourced, Empire-bound and Empire-supporting....

With no one willing to work with her she heads for engineering bay.  There's an unconscious and wounded crewman (the one hurt by the Weequay's swing) who needed healed and dumped in an escape pod and ejected....

[Actions:

* Walk to the Engineering Bay
* Drag the unconscious man to an escape pod.
- 3x Rolls for Extended Action.  Total.  1 Success.  Spent 3 Strain Total.
* Confirm the man has nothing of 'importance' on him.
- 3 Successes, 2 Threat - Apply it as a black to my next roll.  I'll use my successes to state that I didn't notice anything important.
* Detach the pod from the computer system and wipe any memory the pod might have - I'll upgrade this with a force point if I may as I want to get this right.
- 2 successes... the data should be gone.
* [Delayed until Ready] Stim the man leaving the needle in his leg and place his own hand on the stim.
* [Delayed until Ready] Ejected the pod manually.

I expect this will take some time so feel free to interrupt... and if I do notice something 'special' about the man that means I need to keep him on-board, the sequence of actions would need to change.]

Foirm checks the scanners again, and the screen is still blank.  Must be something wrong with the screen.  That Sith Spawn Hacker!  I guess it would have been too easy to get a life form reading from the system. he thinks to himself.

Forim says to Onyx "You go hunt him with our Axe Man.  Keep your Coms on, Ill direct you.  We need to load supplies on the ship and be ready to blast off if needed."

Forim Gets up and moves to another terminal, hopefully still active.  He starts typing in commands and getting no where with determining the Hackers location.  Dienton was the good one at this.

Meanwhile, Caddy is beginning the interrogation process.

In short order, you learn that the crew are all short-contracted muscle brought on for labour and grunt work. Very little of the details of the ship's comings & goings are told to them.

"Sometimes we don't even know what system we're in."

"Half these guys I hadn't met before today, when we took off."

A few minutes later, Haruko wakes up. He doesn't say anything, but that's hardly surprising.

Dienton's anger at his crew mates had subsided as he exercised his healing skills.  The man's word struck him and pieces of the puzzle started to click, hopping on the comm he spoke to the group at large "Argh!  The little droid be a fiend mi harties!  His swirling paint job be hypnotizing the crew and sendin them into the depths of slumber!  Fer what nefarious pourpose, who'cn say."

For now, it was enough that there was a common threat aboard this ship that threatened the crew and the rebel band.  Dienton could act to preserve both from the third . . for now.

It was clearish that the droid had flooded the crew compartments to either block their access to engineering or kill any crew still in their bunks.  He had to be in the engineering section, but with the flooded area, access was tough!

Thinking the problem through, Dienton came up with a plan

OOC
GM - tell me if this works.  I want to get to the engineering section, which has a turbolift right into it.  So, I'm going to drop down to the lowest level using the turbolift in the fore of the ship, run across the access corridor and use the turbolift in the aft to get to the engineering section.

If that sounds right - then I do it, telling Onyx and Ikki the plan and asking them to come.

I also, begrudgingly, tell Forim and Caddy, but recommend they stay put to watch over the computer and prisoners.

Without the ability to produce water... how is anyone flooding the compartments aboard the ship?  I mean, unless this is a tanker for water transporter?  (Which seemed unlikely?)  Caddy was still rather confused but continued to focus on the 'interrogation' (she's far from intimidating and so it is more of a conversation which, she hoped, would be obvious to the crew who, despite all odds, were still alive!

"That's excellent."  Honestly?  She could never put on a pirate accent as she smiles brightly, "Honesty is the best policy.  It's a pity your captain didn't accept my offer of parley surrender earlier and all this could have been avoided."  There, she used a 'pirate' word.  "Guys, continue to work with me and I'll do my best to ensure you end up somewhere were you are appreciated and your skills valued."  She pauses to ensure they hear her though the group seems to be a 'tough audience' as they still seem wary of her - understandable really. [0 Successes @ Charm]

Turning then to the Weequay she considers the man, [1 Success @ Xeno]"You have much to answer for, Security Chief.   Cutting down your own man?  If I had been any less skilled a doctor, he'd have been dead already."  She shakes her head to make her point, eyeing the other crew members to see what their reaction is, "So what do you have to say for yourself? You don't expect me to believe you're ignorant in all this?" [4 Successes @ Charm]

[OOC: 08:15, Today: Caddanra 'Caddy' Manitu rolled 1 success, 1 advantage using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 3a 2d.  Xeno.

At 4 successes, I'd suggest the Weequay is entirely remorseful (1 success), turns on the captain (1 success), sees Caddy as his 'key to survival (they are a very 'wild race' after all - 1 success), and blurts out some useful information (1 success).  This turn about should give a blue dice (at least) on any future charm rolls for the crew!]

Dienton, Onyx, and Ikki carefully make their way through the level ventral to their previous position. They pass through a cargo hold on their way.

Crates and crates of stuff are packed into the Action VI. In passing, you note their labels. Most of it is written in incomprehensible acronyms or codes, but you get the gist of some of it. On this level, they are shipping droid parts. Several crates have grasping appendages poking out of them. You recognize a few designations here and there.

A number of crates, large and small, are labeled with 'fragile' and 'breakable' stickers. Their labels are all the same, but the model number is not a common one.

You arrive at the engineering turbolift. You ride it up, ready for anything. Then the door doesn't open. The servos strain and whine, but the doors don't slide open.

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

Dienton glances at the crates and the strange labels as he passes, he takes note of the model numbers - then continues on.

Riding the turbo-lift up Dienton pulls out his carbine, checks the charge and waits.  When the doors wont open, he looks around at the door, looking for the cause.

Dienton recognizes the designation of the droid model in question. It refers to an Arakyd Viper model Probe Droid.

The turbolift doors are straining to open. Dienton's sharp hearing is pained by the screeching of metal straining. He gingerly touches the door seam. It is faintly warm.

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

In Computers,

It's very hard to tell if the weequay Haruko is feeling remorse or not. His stern, lined expression doesn't shift. Mostly he stares directly ahead across the hall, seemingly ignoring everything said to him.

The Weequay, for cultural or religious reasons, never converse with 'outsiders.' Anyone not a weequay is included in this vast category. Ones found off their home planet usually understand Basic and a few other common languages, but you will never hear them talk.

This one is proving no exception. The only communication he makes is to hand you something that had been tucked into the band of his pants.

It is a keycard. After handing it over, he resumes staring at the wall.

The crew don't seem to be interested in Caddy's offer. "We're in it for the paycheque, ma'am. Today notwithstanding, it's a quiet life without too much risk."

In the turbolift,

Onyx can smell the scent of durasteel. He is fairly certain that the turbolift doors have been welded shut from the outside. The shrieking of metal is coming from the servos attempting to pull them open, and failing. Very bad for the machinery.

Fortunately, such spot welds can't be very strong. With enough applied force, they may snap.

Caddy smiles her thanks to the Weequay and takes the card, "So... you're in it for the pay cheque are you?"  She considers the group, "Tell you what, as a Pirate, I love pay cheques too and needless to say, I've gotten my hands on quite a few treasures.  I'm going to have a quick word with the... captain... here and when I'm done, you guys can tell me who amongst you would like a portion of the pay cheque that I'll be getting when I sell this wreck, and be willing to join my crew?   Let's say... two... of you.  So make it worth my while, ok?"

She smiles leaves the crew a moment to focus on the captain, "Well, Captain.  Your crew is deserting you, your Security Officer has turned.  Your ship is under my control, what do you have to say?"

[08:22, Today: Caddanra 'Caddy' Manitu rolled 2 successes, 3 advantages, 1 triumph using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 1a 2P 1b 2d.  Deception on Crew.

So... 1 Triumph on the deception.  I'd suggest they'll tell me something 'important' AND with Triumph... actually be loyal?

I'll use all three advantages to negate the captain's 'emotional and mental' defences.   The rug has effectively been pulled out from under her and she's primed for a solid deception/charm invasion.

08:30, Today: Caddanra 'Caddy' Manitu rolled 1 failure, 5 advantages using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 1a 2P 1b 2d.  Deception vs the Captain.

Failure.  So the captain isn't deceived.  Clearly the ship is not under my control and to make matters worse, the captain's 'plans' are still under way.  That said, with 5 advantages, I'd expect her to babble, maybe with nerves?  or maybe she's still shell shocked from being shot?  ANd I'll save a blue for my next action.]

Forim locates the holocam security system. He begins scrolling through the holocams. First, he punches through the dozen in the cargo holds. Nothing interesting going on there.

Caddy talks it over with the crew. They look back & forth at one another. "So, we'd be pirates?" They don't seem terribly displeased with the thought. "Do we get real guns? Maybe fighter ships?"

While they talk that over, Caddy confronts the captain. She wakes up, and glowers at Caddy.

"If you're here to take goods, pirate, you'll find that you've picked the wrong target. Most of the cargo is raw materials. The best market for those is the people I was contracted to! What are you going to do with a hundred tons of durasteel alloy? Strap it to your freighter as armour?"

"You're probably thinking that you can just take the ship and turn it around. Little respray, tweak the engines, flip it for a few credits, right? Wrong. This ship has a silent partner. Black Sun. You'd be better off leaving now."

The captain seems a bit woozy from the stun blasts. A bit of blood oozes from her lip.

Caddy cocks and eyebrow and gives the crew's question an 'obviously' smile but does not actually lie.  Then, focused on the captain, she smiles, "That's rather ironic don't you think?  Our contract was with the Black Sun.  So I'm guessing you ticked someone off there.  Maybe you smiled at the wrong person's wife?  Or didn't listen when they told you what to do!"  Anger now in her tone.  "You see, doing what you're told is awfully important and lying... like telling me you've a cargo of raw materials when in fact your hold holds Arakyd Viper model Probe Droids.  You're an utter fool, a terribly liar, and you don't deserve the responsibility of looking after this crew."  While Caddy is hardly the most intimidating person around, she lightly backhands the tied up woman across the cheek.  The act is mostly symbolic and aimed at driving home the point.  The woman is tied, defeated and hunted.   She has no where to go and no where to turn to.   If she has any way out, Caddy is the one person who is listening and right now, the woman has quite literally 'no' bargaining chips on the table.   If she wants to gamble, she'd better ante up! (Also, while unintentional, Caddy's focus on the woman rather than on the ship may finally make it through to the woman that it is her life in danger rather than necessarily the cargo or the ship!)

[23:06, Today: Caddanra 'Caddy' Manitu rolled 3 failures, 4 advantages using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 1a 2p 2b 3d.  Intimidation. - 1 bonus carried, 1 bonus from the slap etc, 3d as a feature NPC.

Once again, Caddy has probably gone down the wrong path.  Maybe this isn't the Captain, maybe she's bluffed incorrectly about the Black Sun... regardless, the intimidation fails, the woman remains strong and yet... something slips. And I'll carry a blue again.]

Forim continues to scan the ship's internal sensors and Holocam feeds. He finally finds engineering.

Inside engineering, he sees a black and silver R2 with a white spiral on its dome. The droid is outside the turbolift. It seems to be using its welder to affix the turbolift doors closed.

When it has finished its job, it wheels over to the left. It plugs itself into an access terminal.

On his monitor Forim can see the droid accessing the ship's hanger Bay doors.

Meanwhile,

Caddy looks into the face of the captain and sees speculation. The captain purses her lips.

"I don't think you work for Black Sun, after all. I don't think they've ever heard of you. You're just a bunch of pirates. You're going to loot the ship, maybe take us for ransom, sell the droid back into service, and try to unload the cargo. Too bad, . No one is going to buy it. Every black marketeer from here to Kuat is going to be looking for this load."

It is at this point that the Navicomputer data finishes downloading into your device. Stripped of the junk data that the R2 put in, it didn't take very long. As soon as you connect it to another navicomputer, you will have the data that you need.

Dienton and Onyx get atop consoles or furniture. Ikki does as well, but gets a foot in the water first. An electric shock runs through his leg, causing pain & spasms.

The Rebels in Engineering are forced to take positions on objects, hoping the water won't get too high. Fortunately, it only seems to be a centimeter deep or so. It washes across the metallic floor, and electricity arcs from the water to nearby conductive objects.

As it reaches the recumbent wreck of the R2, the electricity discharges itself into his metal-and-plasteel frame. Shocks pop and the paint begins to burn.

****

The captain hesitates, then sighs. "If you look in my quarters, under the trunk, you'll find my personal cache. It's hard to see, but if you are careful you'll find the edges. This trip I've got some black market design specs. They were stolen from Antilles BioGen and I think they'll sell to a competing company."

She grits her teeth. "There's also the ship's slush fund in there. But it's in a bio-metrically-locked box. It'll only open if I'm alive."

From their current perches atop the engineering consoles, Onyx, Ikki, and Dienton can see a diode flashing on a certain one. Apparently the secondary power system is experiencing a substantial drain. On screen is a prompt:

Forim shuts down the secondary power and restores the automatic safety settings. Then he brings it back online.

In engineering, the water stops sparking and shocking everything. Moments later, it has discharged all its energy and should be safe to walk in.

Forim checks the security key. This key apparently has unrestricted access to all rooms in the ship, including the officers' quarters.

Forim & Caddendra head up to the officers' quarters. Once there, they check both rooms.

The first is an austere room with a mat on the floor, a bed-sized beanbag, and a training dummy. The walls are decorated with hanging scraps of cloth and torn pieces of armour. Near the bed is an empty weapon stand, suitable for a pole weapon.

The other room is labelled 'Captain's Quarters.' It also opens with the key.

The floor is covered with a thick, colourful rug. The walls are decorated with paintings; the neo-reformed Representative-Impressionalist school of two-and-a-half dimensions, which has been taking the Core worlds by storm lately, is much in evidence.

Her closet hangs open. A generous selection of last season's finest are mixed with hard-worn spacer's garb. A respectable collection of shoes sits beside a pair of serviceable boots.

The bed is a sumptuous king-sized affair with shiny gold-coloured cloth. Plush pillows and a silk nightdress are scattered about. Under the bed are a pair of mag-boots, in women's 10.

A footlocker is at the foot of the bed. A quick perusal reveals some cheap costume jewelry and a collection of makeup, as well as personal toiletries.

Perception 2d 1s

Following the captain's directions, you shove the locker out of the way. Careful searching reveals a panel in the floor that is a little loose. You pull it away.

Pure sabacc.

Inside the hollow is a pair of datapads with the Antilles BioGen logo on it. You also find a small strongbox, big enough to carry in two hands. There is a fingerprint reader on the seam. From touch, you estimate that it is made of titanium alloy; light, but strong.

Caddy considers the dresses and smiles at the Captain, "Not a bad selection."  The Captain's room did however lead to some rather odd thoughts (not that type!) about the woman and her time in space.

Then, with the 'hidey' exposed, she removed the tablets and adds them to a backpack that she'd brought along specifically for them.  And that leaves the lock-box. She'd obviously aware that if the captain opened it 'incorrectly', there could be something unto-wards inside (whether it be gas or gun was immaterial really) but she had to let the captain do it so... with gun readied, she moves 'away' and made ready to stop anything nefarious, "Go on them, Captain.  And remember, you're all out of second chances."

[Using one of Forim's advantages for a bonus... 19:21, Today: Caddanra 'Caddy' Manitu rolled 1 success, 1 threat using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 3a 1b 2d 1s.  Perception.

Not sure what the threat would be.  Maybe a point of stress due to paranoia?  But I'll leave that to you in case you want to use it to boost the Captain's action.]

Dienton, Ikki, and Onyx find their way back into the second cargo bay. Fortunately, they managed to have a good look around beforehand, and have a pretty good idea on where they are going.

The crates are big and bulky enough to make carrying them by hand a difficult option. This creates some debate until you see a hover-lift nearby. You load the crates containing probe droid parts onto it. With the right know-how, you should be able to build your own Viper.

The Rebels downstairs bring it up via the turbolift, and up to the hanger level. They are just about to the Shimmer, and lower the gangplank remotely to allow access.

On the level above, Caddendra and Forim are herding the crew into the escape pods. The captain is watching them like a hawk, making sure nothing goes wrong before giving up the goods.

Then the ship shudders. Everyone looks around in surprise, but it is a sensation they are familiar with. The ship is raising its shields.

An alarm klaxons out. "The proximity sensor!" Captain Vinjagga says aloud. "Something is closing in."

Roll Cool and decide what you will do.

Caddy hadn't been happy.  The Captain had once again demanded and for some reason she'd given in despite the itch to simply shoot the woman several times and then use her limp and stunned hand to activate the security mechanism.

As it stands though the crew were being loaded up (those who hadn't taken up the offer to come with them of course.   Caddy had made a rather convincing argument to these people to take follow her!)   And so when the shields were raised she looked to Forim.  "Computer Room - bring the keycard."   Hopefully she'd get a better view of what was happening from the terminal.

Seeing Onyx arrive though, she quickly asks, "Did you get to the bridge to find out who was there?"

Forim takes the hover sled and says to Onyx and Ikki "You go help with our guest, I feel she will be less then cooperative".  He knew Caddy might need some help subduing the Captain and dragging her on board.

He pushes with all his might on the hover sled until it gets on board.  He disengages the repulsors and secures the load in the hold... at least partially.

He plunks himself down in the pilots seat nodding to Dienton in the co-pilot seat.  "Sounds like this is gonna be rough."  He flicks the computer starting the calculation of the jump into hyperspace.  He knows it is going to have to be adjusted based on their trajectory after they get out, but having the computer work through the chunky bits now would help him make those adjustments later

When he hears the others get on board he says "Someone double check the hover sled to make sure it wont move around, we have some fancy flying coming up.  Wouldn't want to damage the parts at all."

ooc: Let me know if I can pre-calculate the jump to hyperspeed now, and what the Difficulty is.

Caddy would swear - but that's still not her style - and so she flicks on their team comm.  <"You didn't get to the bridge!  Those two life-signs are still up there and they're reporting an Imperial Cruiser approaching.">  She shakes her head.

Having made sure that the Captain and Security officer are strapped in aboard their ship and that the data slates are stowed (along with the as-yet-unopened) lock-box she flips the comm back on, her voice taking on a different tone as she attempts to emulate the Captain's voice - she'd negotiated with her enough to have picked up 'enough' (she hoped!)

<"Damn the BlackSun Pirates.   And damn the Imperials.   There's not enough time for either of them.  Send out a mayday to the Cruiser, set the self destruct and make for escape pods!  They should pick us up after we six these frackers.">  And with that, she'll stim the wounded crew member (the one she'd set up beforehand) and eject him.

She then turns to the gathered crew here.   "Well, time to roll the dice ladies and gentleman.  You can eject or come with us."  These are spacers, they know the risk of ejecting in space.  Few people would care for them... and Caddy was doing much to show her concern.  "But if you come with us, you're my crew.  Understood?"   Assuming some choose to go, she'll eject their pods.  Those who stay get ushered aboard and strapped in (they aren't yet freed!)

That all done, she'll strap herself into one of the junior cockpit seats....

[Rolling vs 2D 1S given she doesn't know the Captain 'that' well and there are only two on the bridge.   I rolled my deception + 1B from earlier.   00:16, Today: Caddanra 'Caddy' Manitu rolled 1 success using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 1a 2p 1b 2d 1s.  Deception.   So success.  Hopefully they will follow orders!]

Forim can pre-calculate a lot of the simpler elements of the hyperspace jump. Once on a suitable vector, it will only take one more step to finish the calculations.

The rest of the crew refuse to join Caddy. With the threat of Imperial attack so close, they dare not side with pirates. They huddle in the back of the escape pods.

Haruko and the Captain lunge for an escape pod. This is somewhat distressing, as the Captain hasn't opened the lockbox yet!

The blast connects... and the pair go down in a tangle of limps.   While they're getting up, Caddy walks over to the escape pod and hit the 'eject' button leaving the pair without a means of escape.  "You really are the most persistently dumbest individual I've ever met."

"Everyone strapped in?" he asks.  Then not waiting for an answer he throws the accelerator full forward trying to blast out of the bay.  Unfortunately, something explosive was in his wash and it detonated.  This sent the ship into an uncontrolled spin as they exited the hanger, banging the mag con shield generator for good measure.

In the second most ungraceful take off of his career, Forim exits the hangar spinning.

ooc: Ha, that went well.  Would have been super cool to be at full speed when we exited the hanger han solo style.

Side note, Ties are speed 5, we are speed 4, and the cruiser is probably speed 4 or 5.  I can push our engines up to 5, so next round I should be able to keep us away from any ties, if they have not already launched we are fine...

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

The Carrack-class cruiser is an old model of military cruiser, used since the days of the Old Republic. They are still common in small, out-of-the-way locations.

The Carrack is fast for a cruiser, able to keep up with most starfighters and freighters. Smugglers and pirates have learned that trying to outrun one is a hard task.

The Carrack has an electronic warfare suite that allows them to slice into enemy ships and interfere with their systems. Most modern military ships have countermeasures that prevent this in battle, but it is still effective against nonmilitary vessels.

The Carrack has two main weaknesses. First, it has no hanger bay. Some have been retrofitted with external racks that allow them to carry a few starfighters. They must rely on other ships for further support.

Second, the armour plating is weak just aft of the midline, near the ship's reactor. More than one has been destroyed by a well-placed torpedo or turbolaser blast.

The Sunset Shimmer leaps out of the Royal Prize's hanger bay. There is a moment of hesitation as the ship orients itself to just the right vector. Then you get on your way.

A pair of TIE Fighters accelerate and immediately focus on your ship. They begin hailing you, buzzing threats. The cruiser is aft of the Prize, not in a good position to fire or pursue. They begin changing course to get a clear shot.

Requires 1D Astrogation check to finish calculating.
Take your first in-space action.

[Aim: To get the cruiser to focus on moving out of the way of the about-to-explode freighter and 'forget' about our ship.  They will hopefully also pass this message onto the much weaker fighters who'd die with the explosion.

As the speed pushes him back into his chair, the internal compensators easily overloaded with the sudden acceleration, a smile cannot be prevented from creeping across his face.  The ship groans in protest to the quick acceleration.

This doesn't stop them from firing, though. Suddenly your sensors, detecting the discharge of powerful energy. The Carrack's ion cannons and turbolasers erupt with blinding light. The Royal Prize is slashed. You can see fire from their ruptured hull; it is venting atmosphere.

Away from danger, Dienton silently retires to his bunk.  He walks slowly through the ship, the typical bounce in his step is gone.  Secluded from the rest of the group he sits and considers the mission and the events that had unfolded.

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

No one keen on discussing matters?   Mores the pity.   Having spent the few hours gathering her own thoughts she retired to a table and began examining the tablets.  There would be a lot to take in, but understanding the value of what they've recovered was important.  Unfortunately, even after an hour or so of reading, she really just wasn't able to fathom the schematics.  Engineering simply wasn't one of her strengths and so, with the tablets safely stowed, she turned to the Captain and Weequay.  "I'm sorry about your crew.  The Imperials destroyed your freighter.   The question for you two is... what now?  You've proven I can't trust you.  Ever turn you've defied me.  From the word go even to trying to escape at the last minute.  So tell me.  What am I to do with you?"   Hopefully even the Weequay would respond.  For a warlike race, they did enjoy negotiation.  That said, could she ever trust either of these two?

While she's talking, she'll retrieve the rebreather from a nearby cupboard... and the biometric safe.  She'll then ensure that she can vent the air should there be a problem with opening the box, and then use the Captain's fingerprint (or appropriate) to open it.  She'll not untie either of the captives.  They've certainly not earnt it!

[10:10, Today: Caddanra 'Caddy' Manitu rolled 1 failure, 3 advantages using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 3a 2d.  Knowledge (Engineering).

I'll use my three advantages when I know what my options are for this pair.  My social skills aren't making a difference to their attitude towards me and with no trust on my part now, getting 'rid' of them for the 'bounty' on blacksun operatives is probably their best outcome :(]

In reply to Forim Luk (msg # 226):

Ikki chuckled "Sure, I could use the practise" he answers as he slides down into the nearest gun. A while passes by, with the sound of the gun being fired and Ikki cursing until you finally hear the satellite explode along side Ikki's sigh of relief. Shooting a few bits of debris just in case "All good....finally."

If I need to acutally roll, I'd just roll until I hit it lots?

Nah.

Ikki blows up the satellite into its component molecules. Forim double-checks his math and concludes that everything is correct. The team strap themselves in. The Shimmer jumps to lightspeed.

Not long later, you come out of lightspeed in the Kubilaï system, a little-known backwater. One of the planetoids was damaged by a collision centuries ago, and now it has a crater covering one-third of the surface.

You drift towards it slowly, using only short bursts of thrust. The fewer ion energy trails in the system, the better. Then you are hailed.

"Attention, incoming craft. Identify yourself."

The message comes from two X-Wings, approaching your position. They seem to have been concealed by drydocking on an asteroid, and are now approaching you with s-foils split.

"Rogue 4 and Rogue 5, out of Ember Base.  Good to see you, Shimmer. We've been expecting you."

"Adjust your heading 20 degrees portward. Allow us to escort you."

A few minutes later, you are directed to land. The landing site is outside a pressure dome, carefully painted in grey, sensor-reflective paint. From space, you can see a speeder.

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

Dienton feels the lurch of the ship as it swings down and makes a smooth landing, a true testament to Forim's skill as a pilot.  He looks about his quarters and picks up a bag he had pilfered from the ship's supply.  Slowly he stows his weapons, medpac, and minor personal items.  He look at his supply of Stimpacks and hesitates, then he lays these on his bunk for the crew to use.

Dienton had been mentally preparing for this moment for some time now, but he still found it difficult.  He had fought with these beings and did feel some kinship.  Their mission at Mos Eisley had been the pinnacle of their work.  They had dealt blows against both the empire and the Hutt criminal organization, then the freighter mission had begun.  Though Dienton had embraced their assignment, as it wore on their actions had fallen far below that standard.  He knew that the freighter supplied the empire, but it wasn't a military target.  The death of the escort pilots had been necessary and he had dealt with it, but within the freighter the Alliance's callous disregard for the men and women on the freighter struck home.  To kidnap, press-gang, or detain beings who were NOT imperial soldiers or, at the time, even known criminals smacked of exercising power in a very Imperial way.

In the end, the freighter was a less than honest business, but at the time of boarding they did not know that, and they had been willing to destroy or steal items far beyond their mission assignment.

Dienton sighed heavily.  As soon as he feels the ship land and the boarding ramp lower, he walks down the corridor, nodding at anyone he sees, but not saying a word.  He walk into the base to discuss his resignation with the base commander.

OOC
Dienton has lost all faith in the alliance.  He is resigning and as long as the base commander will allow it, will return to Chad.  Though he believes that he may be imprisoned for life along with the freighters crew they had just "detained".  He does not support the empire, but cannot support the Alliance if they are employing the same tactics as the empire (kidnapping possibly innocent people especially pushed him over the edge).

He has left THREE stimpacks on his bunk for the parties use, the rest of his gear is staying with him.

I've had a good time folks.  I gave the GM notice I needed to stepout about 2 weeks ago, hopefully this doesn't put much of a bump in your game.  Adieu

Forim says "Good to see you, it's been a fun day."  He adjusts his course and then wiggles the ship slightly.  The maneuver is a bit sluggish, but it tells the fighter pilots that a fellow pilot is flying this tub.

Forim brings the ship down to the speeder.  He makes sure not run an extensive scan to ensure that his sensor logs would not hold any secure data.

Forim nods toward Dienton noting the morose look on his face and decides to give him space.  He hopes the small mechanic will get his bearings and join them on future missions.

Caddy has little to do on the journey - though it was a short one - and will rest (for what it's worth).   After the docking, she'll head from the ship expecting the debriefing, carrying the tablet and whatever the contents of the safe was.

Ikki looks up to see his small teammate leave, with a sigh he returns to sharping his new weapons. Sad to see a teammate leave but he wasn't the first and probably wouldn't be the last. At least he was alive. Ikki placed a few of his weapons away with his other belongings. Not feeling like he needed to be armed to the teeth for the first time in a while. After landing, he'd walk with the reminder of his team.

Inside the locked box you took from the ship is two thousand eight hundred credits.

The area outside the pressure dome has only thin atmosphere. A pair of Rebels exit the speeder, wearing atmosphere suits. They are carrying crates that they place on the ship's access hatch.

Soon, you are inside the pressure dome. The Rebels escort you to the barracks, where you can get cleaned up and changed. "There's only a little hot water, so be quick. Otherwise no-one else gets any."

After refreshing and changing, you are brought to see General Rieekan. He introduces you to Lieutenant-Commander Taza Belami of Alliance Intelligence and Lieutenant Klivian of Rogue Squadron.

"Good to see you're all back safe & sound, Alpha Team. Since you've been in the field, we have some intelligence to share." Rieekan nods to Taza.

Taza opens a holo of a blaster carbine. "This is the E-11 blaster rifle; standard issue to Imperial ground troopers. Recent reports from the field suggest that they are now being produced with identity lockout features." She indicates a small chip present in the pistol grip. "We believe this device reads certain biometric features even through stormtrooper body-glove."

"We're working on breaking the code," Rieekan says firmly. "If you scavenge any guns, we'll find a use for them."

Hobbie has the next presentation. He opens a holo of a starfighter. "This is the TIE Interceptor, also called the TIE/In. We've been calling them 'Squints.' They're faster and more maneuverable than the TIEs that the Empire has been fielding. They're not equipped with life support systems, shields, or hyperdrives, though."

"The Empire continues to rely on superior numbers, and treat pilot survival as unimportant," concludes Rieekan. "Now, tell us about your findings."

Salutes Lieutenant Klivian and says "It is an honor to meet you sir.  I have heard so much about you!"  It is not every day you get to meet a member of the famed Rogue Squadron!

Despite meeting someone so awesome, he settles down into his seat.  When asked what they found he says "We have two prisoners.  They were transporting Viper Droids parts.  We took an in-tact one - no programming though but we thought Intel would love the chance at going over it for weaknesses.  Turns out, though I bet you knew already, they were part of an imperial shipping network.  Their nav computer data could give us a location to hit."

It was a short summary, but it covered the main highlights while glossing over all the infighting that happend on mission.

Rieekan nods gravely. "If the Imperials are constructing probe droids in great numbers, it can only mean one thing: they're opening a broad net, to catch us one by one. We'll have to move our base, to an even more remote location. Perhaps if we can work out where they're starting from, it can help us stay on the far side of the galaxy. Good work."

Taza replies. "I doubt we're going to get anything useful out of the weequay, so we'll probably end up letting him go. He seems to be loyal to the woman, so we may be able to leverage good behaviour from him with that. We suspect that Vinjagga is from a prominent family in the Core, so we will probably ransom her back for currency."

Ikki stayed quiet as he took in the bounty and info that they had given them. Considering their best gunner had just left, it wasn't looking good in space fights considering he didn't seem to be able to hit anything.  "What's our next move, sir?" Already aware that many scouts had already been sent out to find a base location.

Mission 2: Lonely Moof

"For now, take some time to train your skills and rest up. Get your gear in order, and we'll have your ship ready in time for your next mission. I'll tell the Supply officer to have your pay ready as well. Dismissed." Rieekan and Taza head for the Signals office.

Hobbie says, "I'll show you around Ember Base. There's some people you should meet."

Ember base doesn't take long to explore. The pressure dome encompasses most of it. Outside are some guard stations and satellite dishes, and a few concealed landing areas for small craft.

Hobbie shows you the Supply station, where you can collect your pay and get new gear. Unfortunately, the Rebellion is on a shoestring budget and needs every credit it can get; you're encouraged to collect your pay in munitions and supplies instead of cash. Either way, each of you has earned two thousand credits.

He also shows you the canteen, an area set aside for combat training -- "we call it the Arena," -- and SigInt, the bases' communications building.

"And this is Mechanics," he says finally. "You'll find Vreecha Springett here. He's not part of the Rebellion; he's made it quite clear he's only here for the money. We need his help, though. He's the only one for light years who can repair a fighter-grade sublight engine. He is also an armourer; if you need weapon modifications, he'll do them for cash."

Interesting... not exactly what she had suspected but at least they'd survive the ordeal - not quite what could be said for the other crew members... just a pity they had not listened to her (something that saddened her - not that she could have done more about it!)

"Thank you, Sirs...."  Dismissed.   She could do with the down-time but to be so easily dismissed was a little disconcerting.  The tour though was of 'some' interest and she made a mental note to ask the armourer what he might know of the hilt she'd discovered.  Beyond that, she went to her assigned bunk and... settled.  She needed the rest.

Onyx hands his Old sporting rifle in for a heavy blaster rifle. He was sad to see his rifle go, but after taking some practice shots, he quickly got over his disappointment. The rifle costed him a good deal of credits, but he figured it would be worth it when their next fight came around. Onyx then went to see what equipment he could have access to now that he is a rebellion specialist. It's...clothes, well at first glance. At a second it's lined with a thick material. Onyx tries it on. Not quite as comfortable as his old environmental gear, but it'll do. He shoulders his new rifle, grabs his old environmental armor and returns to the ship to go see how the others shopping is going.

Forim spends some time with the stores officer.  He sees a beautiful flight suit, and exchanges his leathers for it. It fits like a glove!

Next he gets the gaudy gold plating off the gun he salvaged, giving it more of a used steel look.  Additionally, he gets the grip replaced with a fligt stick.  He is a pilot after all.

When he is done, he is a happy camper and ready to head off on the next mission.

Ikki handed over his Vibroaxe to Vreecha, asking for a balanced hilt and Stun pulse mod onto it. Before sliding over some credits, tell him to bill the Alliance for the rest.

As he arrived at the Supply station the first thing that caught his eye was a set of Mountaineer Armour. The armour was cool and practical, from the protected to the assist on climbing, the built in areas and room to expand. Plus it kinda looked like a duster mixed with armour which also fit in with a traveler aspect.

A few moments he left with his clothes under his arm, breaking in the armour as he made his way to the Arena to practise.

Caddy wasn't much into guns and axes though when shopping, she is introduced to Synth-Weave armour. Body hugging, concealed and just perfect under her dress. Just up her street. She buys it having made only a half-hearted attempt at haggling.

For the remainder of her downtime she tinker with the sabre hilt and will generally make a nuisance of herself in the engineering bays as she tries to understand its inner workings.
