M4 WG: Imperial Prison

After a long, hard day of marching, you have cramps and bruises everywhere. Lum actually apologizes, but suggests that the upcoming day might not be much easier. "We know where the enemy are now, but they can move quickly. They may have air-scouts, and we cannot risk being out in the open."

Lum and the Aki-Varshi head from one type of forest into another. This one has trees that are much closer to the ground, with much thicker leaves & branches but much more undergrowth. You aren't here for long. The Aki-Varshi find an outcropping of rock they seem to be looking for. They pull away a plug of dirt and branches, revealing a concealed hole beneath it. Contained inside is a stockpile of polished, varnished wooden objects. They look like small boats, just the size enough to sit on.

"Grab one for yourself," Lum suggests. Half the Aki-Varshi take one each. The other half bid you farewell.

"We stay behind, protect this land," one says in Geik. "Good luck. Be safe in your travels."

Anders looked over the wooden disks and then placed it against his leg as he rubbed his face with both hands. Watching the Aki-Varshi depart the long walk seems to take hold of him and he takes a seat on the ground then picking up the disk and spinning it between his hands.

The trip across the river is alternately harrowing and refreshing. It's nice to relax your legs when they are tired from kicking and use your arms to paddle. However, it's very strenuous to keep going straight when the current keeps trying to spin you around. Your only consolation is that the Aki-Varshi aren't having a terribly easy time of this either.

Eventually everyone gets across the river, although you are spread out over nearly a kilometer of shore. As you beach your boats, you help the ones still in the water stay oriented.

Being waterlogged and dizzy seems to have frustrated Lum, and he calls for an early break. You and the Aki-Varshi work together to build a fire, which is useful for drying off. You resume your trek through the forest.

By the end of the day, you have reached the escarpment. At this point all the rest of the Aki-Varshi stop escorting you. Lum explains that the time has come to separate. "We must remain here to guard the forbidden lands. We will attempt to delay and sabotage these 'Imperials.' They have proven that even in your absence they are a great threat. We have come to agree that they are a threat separate from their war with you." Lum indicates another member of the Aki-Varshi. "This is Tok. He also speaks Geik, and will accompany you to the Imperial base. He will help with wild beasts, but I have ordered him not to fight the Empire."

You have spoken with Tok a few times over the journey. He is a polite male who has expressed some interest in your outsider ways. He steps forward. "We climb down. I show you easiest way. Still hard, but more easy. We go now?"

The sun is beginning to set. You would be climbing in the dark. This would increase the risk of a misstep, but it would be harder to notice you from all angles. After a hard day's walk and swim, you may find it harder to engage in athletics.

Resilience 2D. Failures represent Strain. Threats/Advantages will contribute Setbacks/Boosts to the climb.

The journey may be tricky but Xyklo enjoys the variety, sure it beats slogging through mud carrying everything on your back. And he was glad to have dropped the imperial rifle. As he got familiar with the board, even getting spun round was fun.

He approached the climb down in the same manner as virtually every physical challenge under Forims command, good natured optimism.
He slipped on his scanner goggles and got ready to follow Tok.

Forim does not do well on the journey.  His apparent lack of rest the night before compounds with the hard day of physical labor and he is exhausted.  At every break Forim is found napping.

When they get to the climb, Forim simply looks down the embankment in dismay, but trying not to let it show... "Team up everyone" he says "We have done this kind of thing before." with more confidence then he fees.

Though the climb is difficult, with care and teamwork you traverse the ridge safely. You are nearing the bottom, which from all appearances is a wet, weed-choked flat area, when you see something. It is to the south, out in the fields. These fields are also wet and choked with greenery. It is easy to see that something is moving, because the greenery keeps being knocked around and rustling, but hard to see what it is behind all the leafy grasses. It might be a few humanoid-sized shapes, hurrying through the trackless wilderness. It is about a kilometer away. You are still climbing down, some of you as close as ten meters to the bottom. The rocks here are slick with condensation and slime, but there are vines and creepers to grip onto as well.

The Rebels take hidden positions, waiting for further information.

The movement gets closer, and you can hear voices. Two people, breathless and desperate, are speaking to each other in Basic. Mostly they exhort one another to 'keep moving' and ask if the other has 'seen anything yet.'

Two people, a male human and a male petrusian, force their way through the long grass. They are slogging through the brush, every step an effort in the trackless marsh. They are both wearing bright blue coveralls, though the human has opened his and tied the arms around his waist. They do not notice you, focused instead on looking behind them. They are heading vaguely north, towards the escarpment.

"You need some help?" echoes the man in disbelief. The petrusian climbs up and adjusts his coverall. There's no getting any less wet right now, so he doesn't bother complaining about it.

"You had it right. We're the prisoners. Trying to escape, actually." The man swallows and looks at the escarpment.

"What do you mean when you say you're going to 'attack'? Says the petrusian slowly. "Are there... more of you?" He is looking around, as if expecting to see an army or squadron of snubfighters concealed in the brush.

The prisoners glance backwards, and then at each other. They rush towards the escarpment as fast as they can wade through the water and plants.

Anders considers what the human prisoner said, and how he said it. He didn't sound desperate, or particularly frightened. It hadn't sounded like a lie, but perhaps it wasn't exactly the truth, either.

It doesn't take long for the source of the stomping to become evident. As you predicted, it is the tall, slender AT-ST, the Imperial All-Terrain Scout Walker. A box-shaped cockpit sits atop two six-meter legs, for a total height just over nine meters. It is slightly crouched while walking, but still an intimidating height for a person on foot. You can see several weapons jutting out from the cockpit, including a grenade launcher, a blaster cannon, and the two chin-mounted heavy blaster cannons.

Warfare 2D to recall more information about the AT-ST, including strengths & Weaknesses

The top hatch of the AT-ST is open, with an Imperial Army soldier standing exposed from the waist up. He scans the horizon, and spots the fleeing prisoners. He raises a device to his mouth. His voice, casual and a little irritated, booms out over the vehicle's public address system.

"Alright, Veshra, MacNuggle: I can see you. You've had your exercise, and now it's time to go back home. Now stop running before we have to shoot you."

The Rebels conceal themselves in the tall grass, and the soaking water should interfere with any thermal readings. The Imperials certainly don't seem to notice, even as it passes over several Rebels in position beneath it.

The prisoners stop running. They turn back to look at the AT-ST, which has slowed it own movement. The walker is capable of running much faster than they can, and keeping up with a human's running speed, especially hampered by knee-deep water and weeds, is a joke. It is barely moving one step every thirty seconds. At a distance of nearly a kilometer, its guns are still able to target the prisoners easily. They have no chance to escape.

The prisoners put their hands on their heads and begin walking back. This affectation of surrender doesn't last long as they are forced to use their hands to push through the reeds again, but it seems to satisfy the Imperials. They wait patiently for the prisoners to get closer.

The officer raises his microphone again. "Did you think we wouldn't notice you had gone? As soon as you didn't show up for your shift today, we checked the holocams and saw which way you had gone. Now we're going to have to punish you both."

The Imperial officer's eyes widen as a fist-sized piece of ordinance twirls up into the air. He instinctively raises his hands to shield himself. Had his instinct been to duck, he would probably have been protected by the cockpit armour. The AT-ST's armour, light by warmachine standards, is sufficient to deflect small-arms fire at least. The Imperial officer's body was pierced by a dozen shards of high-velocity metal. He slumps over.

Well never Sithing mind, then.

The grenade bounces off the lidlike cover of the AT-ST, still open after the death of the officer. It falls inside the cockpit and detonates. Smoke and shards fly up out of the small aperture, but most of the explosion is contained within. The AT-ST pauses in an awkward mid-step, its guns tracking something. The head slowly rotates until it reaches ninety degrees from the central axis, then stops. You hear the gears of the walker whining in protest as they struggle to rotate the cockpit further.

"We should probably level with you. We weren't actually intending to escape today. Lieutenant Zem had the right of it when he said we couldn't have gone unnoticed. We and a few other prisoners were supposed to scout out the swamp, looking for escape routes and hiding places. That would be a distraction for the Boss to steal some stuff we would need for a real escape." He looks at the AT-ST, smoke rising from its canopy. "But I figure that plan's wrecked now."

After a chance to look the AT-ST over, you conclude that it isn't totally wrecked. Aside from the dead body splattered across the pilot's station, the instruments are damaged by the shrapnel. With sufficient skill, some of the consoles and instruments could be cannibalized to replace the damaged ones. Some of the simpler functions could be sliced to work through a datapad.

The prisoners look bewildered at all this. They keep looking around at at each other, as if expecting answers to present themselves.

"If we show up again and the Imps connect us to this," the human, MacNuggle, says slowly as he points to the defeated walker, "We're probably dead."

"Our leader doesn't let us in on all the details, in case one of us turns out to be an informant. She says she likes to keep the plan fluid, in case things change suddenly. For about half a Standard year, she's been asking for reports on guard activity. For the last month or so, we've been gathering food and supplies. This week we started scouting for escape routes. We're the first to get this far," says the petrusian, Veshra, proudly.

"I guess the first step is getting us back to the prison dorms before anyone notices that these guards were killed. We'll say we realized it was dumb to run. Maybe we'll get away with it. Then we can tell the Boss to meet you somewhere."

"As near as we can tell, the plan is this: We're going to gather up whatever supplies we can, then make our way into the forest up this ridge." MacNuggle jerks his thumb towards the ridge. "I don't know what the plan is after that."

"We heard through the bean-vine that the Empire is retrofitting all its blaster weapons with identity-readers, so that only the right person could use them. For some reason that got the boss really excited," adds Veshra.

"If the boss wanted to, she could slip out of the dorm at night for a quick meeting. It's not too risky if it's quick. Or, here's a thought, we could smuggle a few of you into the camp. You could get the lay of the land, see how we do things." MacNuggle begins nodding at his own idea, as if captivated by it.

The interior of the scout walker is a mess. Your close-range grenade tore the officer to pieces, spreading his blood all across the instruments. Getting him out is a burdensome job in tight quarters.

Once you have finished with that, you'll have to rig something up for the controls. The instrument panels are a lost cause; close-ranged shrapnel has replaced the levers and knobs. Just making sure the wiring is correct is going to be a job.

Once you've gotten the walker ready for work, you'll have to create an alternate control scheme. Using a datapad, you could slice into the system and send virtual signals. You've never done this before, and probably no-one else ever has either. Creating a bare-bones program would be easy, but creating a tolerable user interface is going to be more difficult.

Athletics 2D to clean the cockpit of body parts. This must be done first.

Mechanics 2D to repair the wiring.
Computers 2D or 1D1C to create a virtual cockpit program.
These can be done simultaneously, but if so you get 1S for working in cramped conditions.

The more advantages and successes you get, the faster you can get it done.

M4 WG: Imperial Prison

The two prisoners set out, armed with pistols taken from the dead imperial army soldiers. It seems that the Imperials in this base haven't been equipped with the new biometric-reader blasters that are now standard. If this surprises the prisoners they don't comment. They begin to trudge across the swamp, heading towards the detention centre.

Zeic and Forim take positions in the AT-ST. They don the dome-shaped helmets of the Imperial Army soldiers whose remains are even now sinking into the wetlands. Forim takes the datapad into his hands and directs the walker to walk.

The problem starts almost immediately. The AT-ST has a system in place, rather a sophisticated one, that prevents it from over-balancing itself. When it tries to put one leg down and meets no resistance, for example if it steps into an unseen sinkhole, the walker will automatically stop stepping, and the other leg will bend down and correct the issue. It's a bit jarring to be in the cockpit when the walker is unexpectedly crouching down, but it's a lot better than face-planting every time you step into a pit.

This feature is still in place in the repaired AT-ST, but it's not working automatically. Forim pulls the feature up as a button to press, but he's going to have to engage the auto-balance function manually.

Flipping a Destiny point. All Piloting checks involving the AT-ST have their difficulty upgraded once. 2d becomes 1d 1c.

The walker begins trundling its way along, heading for the vehicle depot. The Rebels on foot trudge to keep up with the mechanized walker. Soon you come to the first major obstacle: A river. It is shallow but wide, and will require some effort to cross for those on foot.

Meanwhile, in the cockpit a new problem has reared its head. The commlink crackles to life.

"Depot calling Scout Walker 2. Depot calling Walker 2. Ess-Dub-2, do you read?"

Crossing the river requires an Athletics 2D check. Failures and Threats indicate strain from fatigue.
The walker may make a Planetary piloting check 1C.
Responding to the comm correctly requires Warfare 2D, or Deception 1D 1C.

It isn't long after that when the Imperial complex comes into sight. It isn't a large complex: only three buildings on a field about five kilometers squared. It's on the high ground of a flattened hill, the only dry footing for a long way. The buildings are surrounded by a three-meter wall and guard towers.

The forest you noted on the map is still there. The trees are tall and thin, with a thick canopy of branches about five meters up. This creates a shadowy area of trunks and hummocks of decaying leaves.

The comm crackles to life, clear as a bell this close to its source.

"Base calling scout walker. Scout walker, respond. Scout walker, hold and respond. Scout walker, this is base."

You observe the towers. Imperial army soldiers are watching the scout walker approach. You note that there are two soldiers in each tower that you can see. One is holding a pair of macro binoculars, and one is operating a heavy repeating blaster that is mounted in the tower.

In the grounds, you can see a number of people, all wearing Imperial uniforms of one sort or other, walking around. There is a speeder gently trolling along the road towards you.

The Rebels on the ground notice it first: some distance to their North, the distinctive hum of a repulsorlift engine. They turn and see what appears to be a speeder heading in their direction.

On the south end of the base is a building that you were told stored the Imperial vehicles and 'machine - beasts.' The vertical garage doors seem to support this, especially when one slides open and an Imperial Scout Walker steps out.

The landspeeder in the base pulls up on front of your walker, about a hundred meters in front of you. A soldier steps out and waves at you. He makes more gestures that seem to indicate you stopping and lowering the cockpit.

The enemy walker is struck by your own walker's heaviest guns. It rocks and stumbles, and its armoured head is scarred. It doesn't fall over or explode, however. Its head shakes, it crouches down, and then it stands up to its full height. The cockpit swivels over to face you.

Meanwhile, the entire enemy base seems momentarily nonplussed. Soldiers stand still, arms slack, their expressions stunned. The moment doesn't last long. Then the soldiers are running for cover, aiming their weapons, or shouting into commlinks. You have only split seconds to act before the Imperials get their act together.

The landspeeder picks up its soldier and begins to drive roughly towards your AT-ST. Another squad of soldiers has started to take cover near one of the buildings on the West side of the compound. It looks like a temporary prefabricated structure made mostly of plastic.

The sentinels in the north tower quickly begin orienting their heavy repeating blaster in the direction of the AT-ST.

Meanwhile, North of your position, you can hear the sounds of repulsorlift engines becoming much louder and closer. The AT-ST's sensors detect a small speeder headed in your direction.

Everyone may make 1 free Maneuver or action in addition to their regular action this round, due to surprise. Forim already used his extra to open fire. Roll Cool if you haven't already.

Anders blasts the speeder crew. The open cockpit provides little protection against his blaster fire. They are killed immediately. The gunner falls over, causing his repeater to skew upwards as if targeting birds.

The enemy Stormtroopers are suppressed and scattered by Zeic's blasts. They return fire at the AT-ST. Their blaster rifles are of limited use against an armoured target, but the barrage of light momentarily blackens the viewports.

The Force rolled 5 successes, 3 advantages using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 3p 4a 2D.  Stormtrooper R H.
1 Hull damage.
Impose 2S on next gunnery check.

The enemy AT-ST's weapons are more powerful. It strides to the middle of the compound, firing its chin-mounted guns as it goes. The blasts hit all around your Walker's legs. Anders, who is using them for cover, is forced out into the open.

13:17, Today: The Force rolled 1 failure, 2 advantages using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 1p 2A 2D.  Gunnery. Anders loses his cover.

Meanwhile, the enemy speeder that was on patrol has returned. It slows a bit, until it is only a few hundred meters away from your AT-ST. The gunner fires the repeating blaster. It doesn't do any damage, but brackets the AT-ST's vulnerable 'neck.' The gunner reorients as the speeder gets closer.

Speeder is at Medium range band.

The Imperial AT-ST fired a volley of grenades. They plinked around Anders in a tight spread. However, he could tell from their bright pink band - and how they did not detonate - that they were dummy rounds. This AT-ST had been equipped for training, not battle. The gunner must have panicked and fired these useless shells instead of an armed weapon.

The enemy Stormtroopers fired at your walker again. They concentrate fire on your walker's vulnerable neck joint. This allows the watchtower gunner to fire more accurately. There is an explosion in the cockpit; Forim and Zeic are showered with sparks as one of the damaged consoles feeds back. Forim's slung-together program fails, requiring a manual restart.

Anders performs his internal decapitation of the enemy walker. Smoke rises from the ports and it doesn't move any more. Forim blasts the vehicle bay's doors, sealing them shut. Zeic keeps the enemy suppressed with the light lasers.

The enemy have lost the heaviest weapons platform on their side, but they have not given up. The enemy speeder skews around, staying behind your walker. The gunner fires a barrage of blaster fire.

The tower-mounted heavy repeating blaster continues to fire its deadly barrage at the walker as well.

The Stormtroopers had taken notice of Anders after he sniped their supporting walker. They fire their blaster carbines at him, a softer target than the AT-ST. The air around him is filled with fiery red energy, and he feels as though his clothing or skin may ignite!

Over the AT-ST's commlink, you hear the soldiers calling for aid. To your ears, however, the signal is near-drowned out by background noise. The blaster fire seems to be drowning out the soldiers' words.

"Depot ... rogue ... reinf... Repeat... walker... scout... prisoners! ... immediately!"

The reply comes back from another position. Though it is much farther away, the signal is clearer.

"Say again, Depot. You're not coming in clear. This is Central, say again."

This isn't surprising. You know the context for the message and you can barely deduce the meaning of the drowned-out signal. It looks like it might be a few moments more before they can successfully call for help.

The high-powered blasters slam into the tower on the east side of the compound, causing the metal to bend and snap. The soldiers desperately try to get to the emergency descent pole. This is only partially successful, as the pole itself detaches from the tower. It tilts at an angle just as the soldiers are sliding down it. They are left hanging in the air several meters above the ground.

Anders fires a flurry of blaster fire that disables the crew of the gun-equipped landspeeder. It drifts slightly to the left, then gently eases down onto the earth.

The Stormtroopers note that Anders is still alive and fighting, and refocus their attention on him. They fire a blaster volley at him. The effect is intense. He is struck on the arm, forcing him to drop one of his blasters. The energy seems to fill the air. He can hardly see the stormtroopers to get a clear shot.

According to the intelligence provided to you by the local agents, the nearest landing pad for a ship is at the compound to the south-west. That is likely where the prison riot will occur, once your insurgents get back there to inform their fellow inmates.

Your AT-ST faces the power generator. It is sparking and humming with power. Forim and Zeic are preparing to attack it when Anders sees something happening behind the walker.

A few Imperial Army soldiers have exited the building. Two of them have blaster rifles, while the other two are working together to carry a portable missile launcher. The repeating blaster fire from Anders causes the enemy to fall to the ground. One of them drops the rocket launcher, preventing the other from loading it. He clutches the rocket to his belly like a baby he is protecting as he curls up behind the ferrocrete barricade.

Zeic also blasts at the enemy, forcing them to stay down and preventing them from firing even their hand weapons.

Forim blasts the power generator with the walker's main guns. A furious barrage of high-energy blaster fire strikes the generator. It sparks and shorts out. A surge of electrical energy flows along the cable to the shed just outside the bases' walls, to the west. There is a crackling, then the shed explodes. The metal roof flies off and twirls in the air.

There are some terrific cracking noises from the east, the sound of wooden branches being snapped and trees knocked over. Out of the woods comes another AT-ST.

Forim lands, hard, on the ferrocrete. It's too high to benefit from rolling. Most pilots learn how to brace themselves for impact, but it requires timing and Forim doesn't quite get it right.

10 Damage, 10 strain. Damage reduced by soak, strain is not.

The two AT-STs collide. There is a terrible crash, then a small explosion as the grenades in the abandoned walker go off. Both walkers collapse forward in a big heap.

The Imperial soldiers refocus. The two with blaster rifles lay down covering fire as the other two pick up and load the rocket launcher. The blaster fire decorates Anders' cover, but he isn't hurt. Instead, he files down the wall he is hiding behind and manages to get into an enfilade position against the Imperials. Their cover is no use against him.

Imperials are at 3D range against Zeic and Anders, 2D 1s against Forim.

The Rebels are reinunited now, and they are momentarily safe from enemy fire. Unfortunately they also lack any transport beyond their own feet.

Forim listens to the confiscated imperial commlink. It is only picking up conversation from the nearby base, but it is enough to tell why the Army soldiers suddenly withdrew.

"... rioting, rioting at the south complex! How did they get..." there is some static. "All troops, withdraw and lockdown! The Rebels will have to wait. Make sure..." and more static.

Then another voice cuts in. The broadcast is much clearer, as if a stronger signal is broadcasting it. "All Imperial forces, this is the Warden. Contain the riot by any means necessary. Kill any armed prisoners on sight. No warning, no mercy.

"Shuttle crew, your orders are to take off and get to the orbital station. Get reinforcements and bring them back down. Do not let any prisoners get aboard. I and the command staff are at the turbolaser station. If the shuttle takes off with any prisoners aboard, I swear by the Emperor that we will shoot you out of the sky."

Within minutes, the speeder has reached the prison camp. It is a dilapidated ruin. There were once walls running around the entire structure, but they have fallen on the east and west side of the compound. A wide, lazy river runs through the compound, dividing it into two halves. The north half has a pair of buildings. These buildings are a hive of activity, with jumpsuit-garbed males of many species running around them. They are fighting a few Imperial Army soldiers, tight-knit clumps of armed men trying to make a stand anywhere they can. Their blaster carbines and grenades give them the firepower to kill the prisoners, but there are enough prisoners armed with blaster pistols and blades to keep the fight going.

Across the river is a landing pad. On it is a Sentinel-class landing ship, a favourite of the Imperial Army and Stormtroopers for combat drops. A group of prisoners has taken position in the adjacent ferrocrete pad that appears to house power generators. They are firing on it with small arms, but are not getting any closer.

The shuttle is firmly landed, its wings swung up in its resting position. The gangplank under the body of the ship is down, as if they are expecting more arrivals before taking off. There are several prisoners' corpses not far away, as if they tried to run up to it and were gunned down. The Sentinel is positioned so that its aft is pointing towards the power station. Its rearward blaster cannon occasionally spouts green fire in that direction. This is enough to suppress the prisoners taking cover there.

Forim pilots the landspeeder across the field, weaving in deference to unseen fire lanes from the stationary vessel. If they can get a shot, they don't take it. This is an Imperial landspeeder, even if the people in it aren't wearing uniforms. Perhaps the gunners haven't taken a good look yet.

The landspeeder drifts alongside the generator field. If it gets any closer, the shuttle will be able to fire on it. There's no avoiding the guns' travois at this range.

You are two range bands away from the shuttle. The landspeeder can get there in one movement. You are one range band away from the generators, but the landspeeder will bump into the generators if it drives into it.

The Sentinel is large enough to accommodate a landspeeder, but they are usually brought on board by a special lift. The gangplank is used for people, and is perhaps large enough for a speeder bike. Your landspeeder slams into the ramp, narrowly sliding into a slot barely wide enough for the chassis. In fact it is not quite wide enough, because the doors are bent inward by the doorway.

The Imperial Army soldiers inside are nonplussed. They gape in astonishment, weapons held limply as they take in the situation. Perhaps they received a shout of warning from someone at a viewport, but it would have been a second at most. The five soldiers are armed with blaster rifles. You have a moment to act before they can attempt to repel boarders!

Earlier, you intercepted a message over the long-range comms. It suggested that the prison's commander was only too willing to blow this craft out of the sky using the planetary turbolaser if they tried to escape earlier.

However, given your knowledge of planetary defences, you doubt his ability to do this while the shuttle is in the atmosphere. Such weapons are designed to attack targets in orbit, or approaching the planet. Even a craft approaching the cannon at a low angle could not be targeted, although some installations have defensive guns to prevent starfighters from attacking the cannons with impunity.

Seeing the implication Forim says "Does she have codes for the turbo lasers? Also, Shove that speeder out the back.  I dont want that dragging us down."

Forim however, Does not wait for them to complete the task as he able the handle the odd weight and drag with ease with his long life behind the stick of the controls.

"Get those guns working" he says as he moves low, ensuring he stays below what those things can target.

He sets a course that makes his flight look like he is moving behind the imperial lines to bring its guns to bear on the prisoners.  Hopefully the imperials will fall for the ruse and he can get his team some shots at them before then think to take cover.

ooc: I got 3P 2A piloting.  Its what do ;)

11:20, Today: Forim Luk rolled 5 successes, 1 triumph using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 3P 2A 2D.  Rolling Space remove 2 setback dice.

spending triumph to get us into a position behind the enemy lines, letting us take a nice clean shot at them

Anders can see the cannons are already online and it would seem they are not lock out. Using the digital sight he lines up the Imperial positions and fires off a series of short bursts.

He uses the Aft blaster cannons to fire on the Ion cannon.

M4 WG: Imperial Prison

Designed for combat drops into hot landings zones, and close-air support, the Sentinel is an ideal choice for this maneuver. It drifts gently down over the enemy position. A landspeeder, not unlike the one you commandeered, was using its mounted repeating blaster to suppress a group of rioting prisoners. The sentinel's powerful repulsorlift engines push down on it, crushing the crew painfully. This allows the prisoners to get close enough for their pistols and makeshift firebombs to take it out. Anders fires the ion cannon and disables an AT-ST that had been stomping around, wreaking havoc. The prisoners cheer. The few Imperial wardens still resisting throw down their weapons and surrender. The prisoners accept their surrender, using their own blaster carbines to hold them up.

Asak Drut rejoins you in the cockpit. He scans the field below you, before pointing. "There. I think that's her. That's the boss." He is pointing at a human woman, the only female prisoner you have seen so far. She is walking briskly around the captured compound, giving brisk orders to every male she passes. She has a bloody vibrosword in her hand, and a blaster burn on her left shoulder.

Your ship lands on the battlefield. Many dead prisoners surround a few dead Imperials. The remaining live prisoners are searching the bodies, desperately pragmatic. They look up as the landing craft approaches and begins to descend.

The gangplank lowers and you are immediately boarded. The two dozen remaining prisoners all crowd and push, trying to get on board. Their leader is shouting behind them, although whether she is trying to encourage them or make them withdraw, it is impossible to tell.

Moments later the hold is crowded with males of several species. They are nervous, terrified, exhuberant, confused, and a host of other emotions.

The prison gang leader shakes his hand while meeting his eye. She seems to be apprasing him, looking at his non-human features searchingly. Finally she says, "Call me Callie." The prisoners near her react with surprise; apparently this is some sort of honour.

"I don't know where you came from, or why you're here, but you have done more to help us than anything else that's happened in years," she says.

"Endanger us, too," mutters a nearby prisoner. Callie does not acknowledge this.

"You've managed to snatch their shuttle too fast for the report to go out. The Imperials will think it is in their hands until things get too suspicious. That's the good news. The bad news is that anything we do with it will alert them.

"The cannon they have can take it out if we try to fly straight up. My plan was to fly over the horizon, until we were out of range of the cannon." She points up to the sky. "However, the defence station up there has some fighters they can use to launch pursuit. This thing isn't fast enough to outrun them. And we can't even stay put, because sooner or later they'll send more soldiers down to finish the fight."

"So, since our choices are 'bad,' 'worse,' and 'suicide,' I assume you have a plan for getting out of here?"

Forim gives a wry smile and says "In true hotshot pilot fashion, I have no real plans for that.  Unfortunately our leader was killed in action and I took over leadership.  Im doing my best in their absence.

We could lead a ground mission to try to disable the thing, but I don't fancy our chances there.

I think our plan is to just fly low and far then break for orbit.  That said, our first ship got shot down on entry, so there is that...

Sorry this rescue didnt turn out as planned/

Dont suppose you know if the warden was taken alive?  Command would love to get their hands on an officer.

He rubs his chin for a minute before adding

"Would be nice to take out any cruisers in orbit with it before making a run for it, that would take out the fighters."

Then she leans in close to Forim and murmurs to him.

"Some of these guys are desperate, and they're all scared. If you don't keep control of this ship, they might rush the cockpit and try to take off. Take their chances with the fighters and the guns. I'll keep them focused as best I can, but after that riot their morale is shaky."

The rioting prisoners clamp themselves in however they can. Callie and her lieutenant take unoccupied spots in the cockpit. Fortunately, most of the controls in a Sentinel's cockpit are modular, and can be shunted to whichever position is available on the fly. The exception is the pilot, who must be seated at the foremost station.

It's a short hop from the main prison complex to the defensive turbolaser. The dome-shaped structure is slowly opening to reveal a cannon. The cannon is mounted on a turret that slowly swings around to take aim at the sky. A single laser cannon is mounted on the top of the cannon, which swings around much more easily.

As you approach, the ship's communication board lights up. You are being hailed on the local military comm band. Your ship's sensors also ping some alerts: new contacts detected.

Kindly roll Cool now, in case we need it soon. Also please indicate which of the ship's control stations you are occupying.

Forim is at the pilots station, buckled in tight.  With a tight nod he says "This is going to be fun" and flys low at the base.

Sensors ping the base and bring up information about the layout.  Unfortunately he is also pinged and they launch counter forces.  "Sithspit, they already have ships in the air.  See if you can convince them we are coming in with a wounded officer.  Maybe that will let us go in without getting shot at."

Forim stares at the sensor readings with his hand on the shield activation ready to activate with a millisecond notice.

With a few fortunately-placed blasts, the power supply to the planetary turbo laser is cut! The small defensive laser is still active and firing.
