Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

Another difference with the drow of pathfinder is a shift in alignment to the chaotic side of evil now that they have demon patrons rather than the Lolth fanaticism. I'm not sure how much I like the drow being a more chaotic race and prefer to play them in the "original" Neutral Evil flavor.

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

Anyone ever play the Kingmaker Adventure Path? I've just started running it for my GF and my son and was wondering what everyone else thought of it. Any opinions/advice/suggestions/tips are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

I'm running it right now.

Overall it's a pretty solid adventure path but my personal advice is to really remember to use weather and the wandering monster chart. Because the party pretty much only deals with 1 fight per day except for a couple of the dungeons they can alpha strike and burn through fights pretty fast.

Therefore including a few more encounters or spicing up the existing ones might be a way to go if you feel like the battles are getting a bit boring. However if your players are having fun curb stomping their way through the adventure, let the good times roll!

Anyway I have tried to make something interesting for every hex they encounter. Not always a fight but sometimes they find an abandoned hunting camp or a beautiful waterfall or something so the game doesn't feel quite as empty.

Sometimes the simplest things like them finding a small pond teeming with fish can lead to a lot of fun down the line...

The Dungeon Master:
make something interesting for every hex they encounter.

That was definitely my first impression upon seeing the Hex map. I thought, how boring to spend the day exploring and not find anything at all interesting. So yeah, I'm going to try to spice up every single hex so that there's never a wasted moment.

I love your scenic suggestions also. Anyone else have examples of interesting sites upon which the adventures could stumble?

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

I sniped a few random encounters from Skyrim/Morrowind/Oblivion.

One thing is that I added a few more bandit camps just because it seems like the whole area is only being terrorized by a dozen-ish bandits afterwards.

I'm not familiar with 100% of the map but yeah... totally accurate from what I know from various adventure paths etc.

O way to spoil some of the adventure paths...
Kidding, the titles are not very far-off.  For example: Spoiled Nobles (Spain); how true did that ring home.

Seeing the map, made me wonder: After 10 years, what are is left to develop?  Or are they going to develop a new 'world'?

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

There are still the continents of Vudra and Arcadia at a minimum to expand upon, something they started in Distant Shores.  I think there may be continents far to the south that haven't been explored either.

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

It's more the areas they haven't fully developed yet, likely intentionally, for when they finished out the Avistan and Tian-Xia areas of the map.

I haven't seen much material regarding Casmaron, though I would love to see an Occult adventure path taking place in Jalmeray or Vudrani proper.

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

The "nobody cares" section is technically islands belonging to the Vikings but yeah... they haven't really done a deep dive into that area so nobody really cares about it...yet.

Plus that area has REALLY cool fey stuff that goes on in the middle of "Viking Forest" so again...why go to that area and NOT go to Fey-on-crack-Forest?

Why go to "pirates...but colder" island chain?

I do not remember playing anything from the following area in Pathfinder Society; or I have and wiped it from my brain...
What is the: Conan Vs. Magic Space Robots area?

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

It's all rural barbarians juxtapositioned against space robots and lasers...

I feel it is very much influenced by the old Might & Magic series. I haven't played the later ones but the original ones all ended up with a very sci-fi feel to them.

Short story long, the "medieval fantasy" world tended to end up being gigantic space ships flying through space so you end up with your barbarians and mages using lightsabers and laser pistols fighting robots and aliens for the big finale...

edit: OR more likely it is He-Man which was a weird amalgamation of science fiction and fantasy...

O right!
Yeah, that was the whole: John Carter and Mars episodic adventure you could take.

I still laugh at the name and symbol they designed for the region, mainly because of another Podcast that is playing Monte Cook's game: IT'S NUMERIAAAaaaaa
(That probably has little to no affect on whomever is reading this)

Anyways, thank you for the help.

Monte Cook is Numenera
Pathfinder is Numeria

THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS!!!!

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

I'm going to be running my first ever campaign in Golarion.  My group has used homebrew for a long time but this is my first time dming a d20 game so I figure an established setting is my best option (I used to dm a long running freeform game on rpol).  Is there an area that is seen as a fun place to start in general?  I'm currently working through the inner sea guide and several other PF sources to see if anything strikes my fancy.  It's an experienced group (I've been playing 3.5/PF for about 13-14 years and I'm the second least experienced player in the group) so I likely won't use adventure paths, though I have no problem scamming a few ideas from them.

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

There's really different themes to the different areas... So it depends on what you want! I guess the huge city of Absalom, with the Pathfinder Grand Lodge and other things, is a cool area... Though if you want more of a mix with wilderness and cities and space for everything, Varisia is a good area and the setting for several Adventure Paths (Rise of the Runelords, Curse of the Crimson Throne, the beginning of Jade Regent, and more I'm sure) so there's a lot of info to get about the area. Or turn east, check out Razmiran and the followers of the fake god-ruler. River Kingdoms I think is the main area for the much loved Kingmaker AP, and the countries to the south and north east of there aren't very well described and explored in current storylines (I think) if you want an area giving you more "artistic freedom".

Although I understand if you want to go homebrew, I'd gladly recommend the APs no matter how experienced or inexperienced you are :)

This is the basic summary of all of Pathfinder. It is funny but also very accurate. Mind the foul language!

In reply to Ventrikel (msg # 28):

I figure I might look to the paths for inspiration but I don't know that they'd work with this group necessarily.  It's nice to hear good things about them though.  The only other opinion I'd seen was that they were lacklustre.  Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: [SETTING] Golarion Chat

The paths are not 100% ideal but they are usually solidly written and they at least attempt new things.
