Department for Culture

All cultural endeavours, personas and opportunities available to you will appear below. Anything marked as 'unconfirmed' may have a variable output, otherwise these should be considered well-known issues

Snapshot - 48 NS (Turn 18):
  • Language - Business is conducted primarily in Rim-Swahili, though Finnic, Bantu, Anglic and Sino-Urdu are spoken in various regions. Almost all Exodus records are in Rim-Swahili, Finnic or Anglic
  • The Arts - Literature and theatre comprise the dominant 'high' art forms, with music and cinema more popular but considered a lesser form. Drums, percussion and woodwind remain the predominant instruments, with various vocal and choral forms.
  • Religion and Faith - Where practised it tends to follow Saganite, Stoic or Rationalist belief systems with a much greater majority of Atheist or Agnostic practitioners. Actors and celebrities, including the comedy bromance star Todd Kruz, have in recent years flocked to the New Stoics
    • Saganites - Based very loosely on the thinking of Carl Sagan, that is "simultaneously emphasising the value and worthiness of the human race, and the relative insignificance of [humanity] in comparison to the Universe"
    • Rationalists - Closest to Humanists, believing in a higher power but that is is focused on humanity as a whole rather than a specific sub-group or humans or an individual. Drifted to incorporate the Brin Hypothesis of humanity being steered or uplifted by now absent progenitors
    • Stoics - Believe in a variety of spiritual self-care methods, and seek "a god worth worshipping."
  • Focht Epidemic - Defining two generations and still within living memory, the epidemic has left it's scars on the Federation. Cynicism, wariness and a broad hatred of losing control of situations are among them
  • Sport - Until recently this has typically been athletics, martial or hunting biased. With the reintroduction of 'football' and motorsports by the Jacinto League this has shifted and a variety of road, rally and gravionic styles have been established. Daredevils in Usiku have constructed a subterranean blackwater rafting experience that utilises gravionics

Opportunities:
  • Cultural Datavaults - Broad range of topics retrieved from the recovered starships of the Exodus Fleet
  • Gharistan - With private investment in the NSBC media conglomerate and a slew of successful productions for Red Moon, JNC and HBN the otherwise sleepy township on the Nezem side of the Anderbacks has established itself as a centre for the nascent film production and distribution industry, significantly so since the launch of GSEN

Progressing or Prototypes

Programmes:
  • Limited cultural exchange programme between national politics is in place.  Grants from the Federation fund the establishment of a handful of small Baradari Centres in the towns of the Northern District, easing some of the tension between poorly integrated communities of frontiersmen and skilled migrant workers and scientists from the Rafiki.
