Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
Three days after the adventure in the tunnels, the hills still show no signs of drying after the drenching rain which lasted for weeks. The plains below the hills remain flooded with only a tree poking through the shimmering water here or there. Fish have made their way into the flooded plain from somewhere, and the fishing is quite good at the water's edge, thus the Cloud People enjoy a food which they do not eat often.

On the third evening, Munia announces that she has seen a vision. As one of the three elders of the Cloud People, her statement is taken seriously by most. It is surprising though because Old Hak is usually the one who interprets visions in the clouds. Munia speaks adamantly that she was a visitor in the clouds approaching the village. The visitor will arrive soon and should be greeted warmly.

Another two days later in the morning, the hills are finally beginning to feel dry again, but the plain remains flooded. A visitor does arrive on this fifth morning from the west.

A hunchbacked and scarred woman hikes to within sight of the village and calls out, asking permission to enter. She answers to the name Ven and she seeks audience with Nin-kagina. Ven is a messenger from the tribe known as the Scorpion Women.

Ven explains her mission thus, "I came from the Scorpion Women who have settled in a valley to the west. We followed a herd through the hills until we came into the territory of a tribe of men who ride on the backs of beasts. The men would not let us pass, and we would not surrender the herd. A conflict was soon to turn bloody between the tribes when the skies opened up and the rains began. We sought shelter in the valley in have remained there since. A great evil has befallen the Scorpion Women in this valley. We thought that it was the storm charged with bad magic, but even after the storm died, our fortunes continued to turn ill. Our leader is too weak to travel, and our slaves have died from poisoning in their sleep one by one. Now, the free women are starting to die. We believe that a murderer is stalking us. Some still blame the beastriders for hexing our tribe. We keep a strong watch, so the killer must be one of our own. No one in the tribe trusts one another right now. We are all suspects -- all except the one Scorpion Woman who left the tribe before the evil befell us. You, Nin-kagina, are the only person in the world who our leader trusts. I was sent for you, and I ask you to return to your tribe and root out this thorn in our side."

Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
Nin-kagina was only slightly peeved that it was cloud-seers who predicted the whole thing. But then, she wasn't the best at seeing the future, herself.

"I will come, though I am sure my mother told you about my legendary powers of perception." It was slightly sarcastic on her part. As a child, Nin-kagina had had to be physically shoved back to keep her from stepping on a scorpion. "But I will come with men, and they are to be treated not as my slaves, but as honored guests. Even more, some of the men I bring may be wise men." The idea of a male hunter would be understood if mistrusted, but a male priest or shaman of any kind would be seen as frankly ludicrous. Best to get that dealt with off the bat.

That evening, she asked for the tribe to gather together. "The people of my birth tribe, the Scorpion Women, have called for my aid in hunting down either a murderer or a curse. I cannot say that my parting from them was particularly amicable, their ways would be strange to you, and under most circumstances, they would seek to capture our men rather than ask us for friendship. Yet I am apparently the one that they trust most, and I cannot simply abandon them to their deaths. I am not Gremm, and we are not faced with the starving-time."

"I would like a small band to accompany me." She looked at the others. For a moment, she considered inviting Sulea, but she knew that Sulea was busy dealing with the thousand little complaints that the rain had left behind. "Neerga. Capin. Vug. Mishlei. While you have all more than earned a rest, we have all worked together before, and our skills have been tested in the escape and the recapture of our prizes. Will you aid me?"

"I'll need to make more arrows, seriously, but could craft some on the y to they are simple however with the water we will need boats. I could make those with help. Your my wife I would insist on going even I not asked. And we should learn more bout the Beastriders they seem to be a mighty tribe and we may need to deal with them at some point.," Neerga said.

Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
Boats will not be required for this journey. The messenger, Ven, came over the hills without using a boat herself, and she knows the way back to the valley which was claimed by the Scorpion Women. The arrows very much may be required if the feud between the tribes is as serious as reported. Ven will not rush this squad away from the village before they are ready for the journey, so Neerga may take as much time as she likes to prepare.

Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
Mishlei spends most of his time in the last week in Hak's lodge.  He helps Hak where he can with the every day chores, but has been spending a lot of time alone in his little corner.  All anyone can ascertain is that the Neanderthal is working on something, crafting something, and doing a lot of strange chanting.  New inkings appear along his arms, neck, and thighs.  They are very much like the first inkings, but strikingly in contrast.

When not in Hak's lodge, Mishlei wanders the village, helping Sulea with any healing he can, but also getting to know the denizens.  He talks among them all, except for the woman he has come to know is named Tulu by the Cloud People.  He attempts to speak to her, but she does not socialize with him.  So, instead, he begins to watch her.  Not stalk her, but watches the way she communicates with gestures and body language.  He notices every nuance and puts them to memory.  One day, he will speak with her... in her language.

On the day the Serpent Woman visited, Mishlei is finished with his project.  He has fashioned and imbued with totem magic a fetish in the form of a gnarled, carved scepter. The visages on the surface are gnarled, twisted, and each seems to be terrified, in pain, or suffering.  The top of the scepter is adorned with the coarse hair of the cave bear, a powerful totem spirit.

Mishlei begins preparing for the journey... considering what he may need to bring with him.

In reply to Mishlei (msg # 7):

Capin thought his shrink fetishes went very well.  He wants to replace the kill stick he lost but...preparation goes a long way.  He begins working on a variant of the howl skulls, except instead of howling when they see danger, they howl if

a) a murder takes place before them

and

b) they see the murderer again...

It would be tricky knowing where to leave them, but still.

He searches the area around for new supplies and then tries to make it work if can find something.

OOC Can roll?

OOC Am I regular size? :D

Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
Neerga works on a new kind of short weapon designed to use agility over strength to use a long pointed weapon of black stone, handle wrapped in leather and designed for one thrust and broken to leave much of it in the body the sides edge serrated inward. It will go in easy and taking it out will be hard and causing damage inside when someone is moving or active like in battle. She calls the dagger design a Quick Thrust Knife. And will make say eight of them for a practical close combat weapon.

Besides that she'll make a new quiver and 24 arrows, 18 stone and 6 black stone the ones good for bypassing armor making them "normal style boring ones" she can do with her eyes closed and taking her time on them.

And plan to do a stone shaper for a new bow using her layered wood design the bow will go in the shaping stones to set into a proper shape after the wood is prepared, it will be a long project, but if it works she can make the finest short bows in the land. Something she can be proud of as a master crafter.

Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
While the others crafted items and strengthened their tribal bonds, Vug wandered through the wilderness gathering herbs and berries for the tribe.

He crept from one shadowy thicket to the next, keenly aware of the predators around him.  To mask his scent, he frequently paused to rub flowers, herbs and dung onto his body.  Occasionally, he even managed to steal eggs and stored food from the dens of various wild beasts.

Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
The foods which Vug has foraged are a welcome diversion from the fish and birds that the Cloud People are mostly eating right now. The berries can also saved for the trip to the Valley of the Scorpion Women.

Neegra does not need to roll for crafting arrows. The knives, however, are a new design, so luck is a significant factor. She ends up with six quick-thrust-knives that gain the attention of tribe's eldest hunter, Zan. He sees usefulness of such weapons in hunting large beasts. He suggests giving one to Vug so that the strange quiet man might use it to perform a sneak attack against megafauna and wound it the hunters to bring down later.

Mishelei finally gains the attention of Tulu that he has been wanting. Unfortunately, it seems that she begins to pay attention to him just as he is ready to leave on a new quest. She gives him a small soft stone which he does not recognize. Although she doesn't speak to him, she does understand his questions. Through a series of questions and hand motions, she indicates that the stone will counter-act any poison if swallowed, but the treatment is only good once.

Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
Nin-kagina, meanwhile, spent her time mostly observing and providing priestly aid where asked and available. She did, however, ask Sulea to spend some time gathering incense for the trip.

21:10, Today: Nin-kagina rolled 5 using 1d6-1.  Sulea - Gather Incense.

The day before the trip, however, she made sure to get an early bedtime. In the morning, finishing as dawn came, she made sure to stand by their fire-circle, casting incense into the flame and calling on Sun and Flame to strengthen her hearth-mate's arm and arrows.

21:13, Today: Nin-kagina rolled 3 using 1d6-1.  Reroll #1.
21:13, Today: Nin-kagina rolled 5 using 1d6-1.  Ritualist - Protection.
21:11, Today: Nin-kagina rolled 0 using 1d6-1.  Priest rerolls at dawn.

Neerga has a +1 combat bonus for one day. I still have two rerolls left for the day.

Of course, Nin is totally unobservant, so it's entirely possible that all of this will be wasted by the trip taking more than a day.

Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
She gives two of her new knives to Vug showing they thrust in suing the deadly sharp stone edge and point then it breaks off with a side movement and twists breaking it leaving a deadly object in the body to continue doing harm and bleeding inside. And shows Nin she is very proud of her new knife and it can use ones quickness and accuracy with it over strength making it for her a good close combat weapon not being strong. And took a great deal of skill to craft.

Neerga has yet to be inducted as Nin-kagina's second wife so will prepare her furs and herself to be bedded properly by her wife, not wanting to leave on the trip a virgin. Likely Sulea will get taken care of first but she will watch the couple to learn how to women mate not having any experience. Then offers Nin her company removing her clothes. [Hopefully some Fade to Black pleasantness will ensue.]

The young storyteller presented himself to Nin-kagina, the day before the Priestess was to leave.
"I would come with you, if you permit.
I'd like to see these people, and hear their tales.
And I'll do everything I can to assist you with your task

In reply to Capin (msg # 15):

Sorry Capin, I thought I had replied to your query already.

Capin feels good to stretch out on his furs at his normal height. Hiking with the group on short legs was tiring.

Capin's new model of security system skulls are a problematic design. He lacks materials that are associated with murders. If he had the hand of a murderer or the skull of a victim, he feels certain he could make this work. Nonetheless, he does have some time to burn, so he might as well try. Capin will only succeed on a roll of a natural 1 to create his murderer-detector gadget.

Nin-kagina receives all of the incense she requires. A young woman from the tribe, Azala comes to the rescue and gleefully shares the needed materials which she has foraged. Azala is full of questions about the rituals, however, and makes it a little difficult to get the work done.

Neegra's gift turns out okay, but it's not a pretty as she would have hoped. It's worth a gem.

Vug defeats his shadow in an epic knife fight. These new knives feel very light and fast in his hands, but they are also brittle and may break before he gets a chance to use them if he is not careful.

Scene 10: Return of the Scorpion
Neerga indeed would not be a virgin by the time the trip occurred; Nin-kagina encouraged both her and Sulea's attentions, and did not sleep alone any night during her work. Once inside the hut, she was every bit as lustful (and, truth be told, lecherous) as Neerga could hope for.

Azala's questions were met with good-humored answers, though Nin-kagina couldn't simply tell her the secrets. Nin was, after all, the great priestess - it took a certain understanding to use the Flame to call upon the Sun's strength. But she encouraged Azala's interest in her practices nonetheless.

And then Schfung's request came, and Nin-kagina nodded. "I will not forbid you from coming, but I must warn you. They will not understand the idea of a wise man very well, and doubly so a young wise man, so be cautious and listen before you speak." Nin-kagina knew it would be good to shock the Scorpion Women out of their existing expectations a bit - but she also knew that it was wise to avoid being too callous about a tribe's taboos. Her clashes with Gremm had taught her that lesson.

Neerga worked on gifts for the Scorpion tribe including a hopefully nicer necklace of the black stone smoothed out for the leader, a matching black stone mixing bowl for sacred paints or to hold something lighter with cover and a black scorpion statue using all her skill.

The necklace is more than good enough, the bowl isn't worthy and the statue seems to have turned out alright. So packs the necklace and statue for giving them and the bowl will go to Sulea for the hut to use.
