Scene 16: In the Valley

After the nuts are offered, NPCs begin emerging from the queen's cave. The first to come out is the hunchbacked scout, Vem. She pays the men no attention and walks a few feet down the path to enter a different cave. A few seconds later, the tall and gaunt-looking woman who had been attending the queen emerges. She shoots a hostile look at Vug as she passes by him. Immediately behind her, the male slave from the queen's cave trails. This slave passes a worried look to Bone.

The slave also makes a hand gesture known among the slaves. The meaning is included in a private line to Bone's player.

Scene 16: In the Valley
As the two crouched together there, Schfung came walking over.
He noticed the hand signal the slave threw Bone, and it added another question to his list.

He sat himself down, and smiled at Vug with a nod ...  Vug being older than Schfung.
Then he turned to Bone; "Will you answer me some questions, friend?

Why is it you appear to be a slave here like so many others, but have so much freedom?
And what was the gesture that slave made to you? What did it say?

Schfung watched first Vug, then Bone, rise and wander off.

Shrugging to himself, he stood again.
He'd hoped to discuss his plan with his fellows; but the women hadn't joined them, and the men didn't seem to be listening.

So Schfung decided to just do what he could.

The men of this place were treated like dirt ... They were made to do the dirty work that nobody wanted to do, and just stand in the corner until called upon.   In short, they were in the perfect position to see and hear everything.
They likely heard every whispered conversation from their dark corners. They likely saw who sneaked around, who carried what, who gave who the stink-eye.

Schfung felt confident that they knew much more than the 'powerful women' of this place.

They were also the ones most likely to benefit (even if just a satisfaction in spite) if one of these women died.

If some man, or men, around here weren't behind this, Schfung was sure they'd know who was.

Either ways, it was not going to be easy to get it from them.  By definition, Schfung was working for their captors.
Of course; even if it was one of them ... if they could be convinced to give up another of the women for this crime, that would be TWO less captors tormenting them, right?

Schfung wandered about some, looking for any men that he might speak to away from prying ears (and eyes?)

Re: Scene 16: In the Valley
Vug visits several of the caves that night, and soon he has compiled a complete list of all the remaining women in the tribe. None pay him enough attention to see through his disguise and half are asleep when he passes them anyway. The other slaves who slightly outnumber the women now do take notice of him, but they do not alert anyone when they see Bone accompanying him.

Besides the queen, these are remaining Scorpion Women:
Zolkur-Dakia, a warrior who usually works alone as a scout or hunter, respected for her skill but considered a little naive by the other women (PC)

Vem the Slaver, this deformed woman usually works as the queen's messenger, but she also searches the wilderness for lone wandering men who could be useful to the tribe as slaves.

Shala the Scavenger, a short woman with beads in her hair, brave and ferociously loyal

Vorea the Hunter and Shaman, a pallid and gaunt woman with crazed bloodshot eyes; rumor has it that Vorea wants the job of queen when the position becomes available. She is the most feared among the slaves because those slaves who work with her tend to never be seen again.

Shulu the Medicine Woman, is a shaven headed woman that wears bone jewelry, including necklaces and bracelets made from lizard bones. She carries a slender stick, the top of which is decorated with a carved scarab gem, which is her fetish. She has publicly declared that she wants to be the next queen, and she is frustrated that she hasn't been named such yet.

Vulala the Slaver is a young woman with a muscular physique, with scarab tattoos on her arms. Vulala is in charge of training the slaves. She was just an apprentice until a week ago when the previous slaver-trainer died. She is unnerving talented with a whip. Vulala believes that coming to this valley was a bad decision by the queen and she hopes that the queen dies soon so the tribe may relocate.

Lokala is a crazed woman who foams at the mouth when she fights. She has no particular position nor responsibility in the tribe.

Varen the Warrior is recognizable by her gray fur tunic and a jagged scar across her face. Varen is the sister of the current queen and confidently believes that the position of queen will simply be given to her as an inheritance without much fuss.

Most of the slaves have no unique names. They are called the same names as materials.
Bone the Crafter (PC)
Dirt the Gatherer
Grass the Gatherer
Water the Fisherman
Mud the Fisherman
Feathers the Mystic, oldest of the slaves
Stone the Brawler, youngest of the slaves
Clay the Trapper
Bark the Fire Maker, a blind man
Shell the Cultist
Reed the Cultist
Sand the Cultist

Shell is that slave who was in the queen's cave when everyone arrived. Bone and Vug find Shell sitting by himself and praying to the Scorpion Spirit for assistance. Shell confesses to Bone that he does know something about the poisonings. Shell has a corn on his toe which aches on the day before someone is poisoned, and the poisonings always happen at night. It's aching tonight. He believes that someone in this tribe will be killed before dawn. He has a hunch that it may be Vulala, but he doesn't dare tell the women out of fear that suspicion will fall on him.

Re: Scene 16: In the Valley
Vug grasped Shell's hands.  "Thank you for this information.  We will do our best to keep anyone from getting killed tonight.  I will have to speak with the others."

Vug quietly shuffled back to the cave where the others were, grateful for Bone's company.  Once he was near the cave, he ducked behind a bush and reappeared in a less withered posture.

He sat down next the Schfung, and told him about all that he had learned.  "We must watch Vulala tonight, and keep our eyes open if someone else is the real target.  I wonder what the rest of our people have uncovered, speaking with the women in the cave."

Bone sat in close to Vug Shfung listening. He continued working on the tool.
When Vug said his piece Bone spoke quietly,The queen fell ill eight nights ago and has gotten worse every day science then.

Bone continued working without looking at the two.
The spoke againThe gestures mean the slavers are angry.

Vug grimaced.  "If they're angry now, they'll be furious if one of them is poisoned tonight. What do they do to the slaves when they're angry enough?"

Re: Scene 16: In the Valley
Bone slows for a moment to think then begins to speak,"
Scorpion Women react differently. The crazier among them lash out and beat random slaves when upset. Most of them are practical and will not harm a slave enough that he cannot work. If there is a food shortage, it is the practical Scorpion Women who are the most dangerous because they are quick to eliminate a few hungry mouths."

Bone begins to work at a steady pace again.
