Scene 21: Dragonfly Swamp
"Must be the Serpent Men, if they got this far, they are a dangerous enemy Toadstool are there other tribes of your people out here your known to? They must be warned is their a way to call them like drums of wood or something? We are here to help your people and mine your gifts are appreciated though our master healers will get them and we will study it. I suggest we find others of your kind though they with others need to fight or we will all be enslaved. I'm though a warrior so I will fight I just prefer the odds to be more in my favor.," Neerga said sad for the frog men.

"We do not use drums. We prefer to remain unseen and unheard. The marsh protects from all eyes -- until now. Our noses are better than yours, but your eyes see like hawks. If someone were to climb one of our tall trees, perhaps that person could where our people went from there."

Vug actually sees more than even he expected above the thick canopy. A little farther to the south, a very large stone pillar sticks out through the swamp into the sky. At its base, there seems to be a circle of woven-floating objects anchored together.

Scene 21: Dragonfly Swamp
Toadstool recognizes the description of the stone pillar. "You speak of the obelisk. That is the home of the goddess, a sacred place. We do not go there without an invitation by the goddess. That is the last place I would have thought to look, but if our rafts are there, then the Toad People must be at the obelisk."

Scene 21: Dragonfly Swamp
The group gathers together and climb back onto their (hated) turtle shell rafts. Poles in hands, they journey together deeper into the marsh. Only a few paces away, the village vanishes behind them, hidden by the foliage from every angle.

Following a maze-like path through Cypress and Mangrove trees, Toadstool and Mushroom lead the Cloud People into a clearing. The sudden sunlight is blinding. By the time that vision corrects, the explorers find themselves surrounded by Toad Men who are pointing wooden spear and alligator jaw bones at them. As Mushroom silently leads, the garrison Toad Men part to allow the group to pass but follow and continue to watch with clear suspicion.

A collection of rafts made in different sizes and shapes are lashed together here. They form a sort of artificial island. At the perfect center, a tall stone obelisk reaches out of the swamp water and points toward the sky. A tall toad woman is climbing down the obelisk on a series of hand holes which have been carved into one side. This toad woman is tall unlike all of the others; she is a head taller than any of the Cloud People.

Toadstool addresses the village, "How did you come to be here, in the shadow of Heqtet's obelisk?"

Another Toad Man answers him saying, "This was after you disappeared. A war party of scale-hides came into the marsh. They sought slaves, we think. The goddess saw them coming and invited us here to avoid and confound the scale-hides. Heqtet spoke to the Marsh Mother and warned us all."

Mushroom speaks next, "Marsh Mother, I have returned with my brother. We were captured by those scale-hides while hunting in the jungle. We were forced to work at their megalith. These Hue Mans helped us escape. They sheltered us for days before they came here with us. Now, they wish to speak with you about the scale-hides and seek our help."

The Marsh Mother says, "I do not negotiate. I only repeat what is said to me by the Heqtet, goddess of toads, goddess of fertility, and goddess of the star amber."

Scene 21: Dragonfly Swamp
I'm Neerga, a crafter and warrior, and speak for my people. We come in peace the serpent men are enslaving many of all tribes and threaten my people and yours. The scorpion women and beast riders. The fire tribe perhaps in time. I wish to form an alliance of tribes to join as one and drive this threat from our lands. I bring gifts crafted weapons of stone, and a sample of the black stone the scale men use and we have near our lands and I learned to craft with. Surely your goddess like our mighty spirits wish for your people to live in peace and these scaled ones bring nothing but collars and suffering to all of us, consult with your mighty goddess, talk among yourselves about what I speak and let wisdom prevail.," she takes out the stone war clubs and a black stone carefully and slowly laying them out.

"This is my wife Nin-kagina a holy woman and Vug one of our scouts who freed your two men, let that deed count, and the good care we gave them and in bringing them back to you fit and well to show our merit.," she made introductions and well Neerga in her hide armor hood up and armed looks the part of a warrior as she holds her bow in a non-combat fashion.

Nin-kagina nodded and stepped forward. "The Scorpion has demanded this of me and mine," she said, mentally telling herself to keep track of which god she wanted to invoke - in changing between peoples, she was rapidly developing ties to too many totems. "The Scorpion, wise in its ways and acting toward a greater end, commands that we seek freedom for Heqtet's people, and bring the Snake Tribe to an end. But we will need aid to do this, and we know that you and Heqtet are no friends of these beasts." She paused. "What does Heqtet say to this?"

Scene 21: Dragonfly Swamp
The queen seems mesmorized by the shiny black stones. Finally, she realizes that her guests have stopped speaking and she must respond. "Hrumph, the goddess finds your gifts worthy and accepts them, Cloud People."

"As for the rest, hrumph, Heqtet is a fertility goddess. Her people do not approve of women marrying women. This is a foolish waste to two wombs. It is not, however, our problem."

Looking at Vug, she adds, "You young man, are you mute? You look healthy enough. Will you take a toad wife for breeding?"

"Hrumph, the scaled tribe poses no immediate threat to us. We enjoy the protection of the goddess here at her megalith. They do make hunting more difficult though. Driving them away would be more useful. What exactly do the Cloud Spirits and the Scorpion Totem want from Toad People?"

Vug gulped, then thought of his obligations to his tribe.  "I am a wanderer and scout, who spends nearly all of my time out in the wilderness, finding food and threats.  I do not believe I can properly take care of a spouse.  I can't commit to a spouse of any kind right now, nor do I believe any of your women would like living in our lands.

"I do not know if our tribes can interbreed, but I am willing to try, if it will help strengthen the alliance between our peoples."

Scene 21: Dragonfly Swamp
Vug managed to talk himself out of an arranged marriage. The queen is not interested in anything less than that. "If you will not marry, then you are not worth our time," she chastises him.

The queen is hesitant to commit to any alliance. Then again, the Cloud People are persistent, and they emphasize the threat which is posed by the city of the Serpent People nearby. Within a few minutes of negotiation, a deal is struck.

Here is what the Frog People offer as their part of the deal. The Frog People will allow access to their territory and will send warriors when called. Thee Frog People will also support the alliance with supplies like food. The queen reveals a couple of secrets as well. The glowing balls of their village are made from a special type of hardened tree sap which is their most precious resource. It glows without heat and will even provide light underwater. The Frog People have one other mystic resource, an oil produced from their own skins. This oil allows them to breath underwater by pulling what they need out of the water through their own skins. The oil when rubbed on the skin of other tribes has the same effect but only for a few minutes. The queen provides three samples of the oil in small gourds and one large piece of amber with promises of more to come later.

In exchange for all of this, the Cloud People agree to lead the assault against the Serpent Men. The Toad People are to never be leading any charge into battle. Also, the Cloud People are to bring more of the obsidian stone when feasible.

Is there anything else the party wants to secure before leaving?

The queen offers her scouts to take the Cloud People through the swamps to their next destination. The Fire People live to the north, and the Sand People live to the west. Which way will it be?

Nin-kagina looked at the others. "Our next mission, I think, should be to return the Sand Girl to her homeland," she said.

Totally not because that would be an excellent start to negotiations...

I forgot to mention something. The Toad People do not trade in gems. Their currency is a cleaned and dried turtle shell. Smaller turtle shells are the standard monetary unit, called Greenbacks. One semi-precious gem is worth about five greenbacks.

"That is agreeable, its our plan we should lead the assualt, and food and support is key to stopping them. As for the stone we can get you a good amount and I can teach how to make it into things if you can send a master crafter after we bring more of the stone, who may teach others and bring cutting and working stones for making things such as clubs and tools. As for other things later goodwill and trade will be good friends are always a good thing and your people are good and just with a wise goddess. I will ask you to have one of your people come with us as a representative of your people before our elders and others who come to join us in this fight perhaps one we rescued they are both good and clever. If these terms are fair and terms are concluded as speaker for the Cloud People as appointed by our elders I offer to you our hand in agreement and may we forever prove to you our friendship.," she walks up holding out her right hand to the leader.

Scene 21: Dragonfly Swamp
The queen stares at the hand for a couple of long breaths. "I do not really want that hand, but if it is your custom, I will accept it. BRING ME MY BONE SWORD!"

Toadstool and Mushroom are bickering about which one will stay and which one will return with the Cloud People. Rafts with supplies are being prepared for the journey to the dry lands to the west.
