Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
After leaving his prized horse with the stable boy, Fletcher walks over to where he finds the artifacts being transferred.

Greetings, good gentles.

Fletcher bows to the professor and the sheriff.

Professor, the good fellows and I are pleased to offer assistance to the the honorable Sheriff Blunnde in protecting thee from any form of banditry whilst handling the beauteous artifacts.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Marek looks over the skinny bespeckled professor and says,

Professor, at first, I thought you were just a con artist.  But perhaps you are who you say you are.

Marek sets the pack on the ground and unties and unrolls it for all to see.

He stands up and faces the sheriff getting nose to nose with him.

But you, sheriff, you I think I have pegged right.

Marek doesn't wait more than a second before turning back and standing with his other companions, slapping Wangs back.

You see, sheriff, you nearly got us all killed.  And by all, I mean your little Black Banner friends, as well.  I'd just like to know why you chose to make it a contest.

Marek pulls out Nirishi's scythe and the goblin dagger and drops them at his feet.

I am laying claim to these items that were found on our journey.  Do I have to go find anything else before this is my property?

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Not yet, Mr. Wang.  And don't worry, I'm not going to make any trouble.

Marek picks up the weapons and puts them back onto his person.

He leans against a barn post very nonchalant, OOC: His best James Dean

I just want to see this through.  I am interested in what the professor is going to do with this stuff.

Ah, I like the way you think, Mr. Wang. Let us have the maidens draw hot baths for us! Mr. Marek, whistle if you encounter any unpleasantness.

Fletcher slaps Wang on the backpack and marches off to the inn.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Marek steps in front of Fletcher before he leaves,

I thought you were interested in this Professor's work.  I thought that's why you were here in the first place.  Don't you think that you have some say in this?

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Oh, looks like you have it well under control. I'd wager the professor will be busy for quite some time. Just give a whistle when you are in need of relief.

Well Mr. Wang, shall we? Last fellow to the washtub is a gnomish farmer!

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Marek steps out of Fletcher's way.

Of course, my friend.  How bout sending someone out with a bottle of brew or something for me and the sheriff here?

Marek reaches into his pouch and retrieves the 30 gold and 2 platinum that he was given earlier.

Here...this aught to cover it!

He turns his attention back to the professor and Nod, always keeping tabs on the sheriff.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
That is far too much for a bottle, friend. One gold should suffice.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Oh...but I insist!

Marek looks directly into Fletcher's eyes as he shoves the money into his hand.

Buy the everyone a round on me!  After all...it's not like we came here to get wealthy....what with all this wealth of knowledge, and all.....

Marek puts on a sardonic grin.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
It could be days before the professor's work is done, as the work seems complex to me. I assume that we will have to alternate taking watch. Believe me, I do not intend to leave this place without being rewarded for our work.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Nod rolls out the uncured bear skin and the aroma of a dead body fills the room.  The professor recoils from the smell and the sheriff chuckles at him.  "Oh my, did you kill this beast in the forest?" asks Professor Krane.  Undeterred, he kneels over the relics, "Yes...  Yes...  That's the one...  I do believe you have them all here.  Wonderful!  I believe the process for making one shroud will take a couple of days.  If Nod helps, perhaps we can shave a bit of time off.  If we get to work in the morning maybe we can have them complete in three days?"  He looks over at Nod waiting for confirmation.

The sheriff chimes in, "Well it looks like you held up your side of the bargain and your names have been cleared.  As for the Black Banners, I haven't seen or heard from them.  I figured they split town.  Either way you fellows won the prize."  He pulls Brightflame from his cloak and tosses it to Fletcher"Well done gentlemen.  My work here is done and I have business to take care of."  He walks over to his horse and leads it out of the stables.  "Farewell..."  He hops on his horse and rides into the darkness.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
With the Sheriff's exit, we should probably keep at least three on watch til we are done here. Take turns sleeping.

Fletcher hands the dagger Brightflame to Nod so that he can examine it later.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Frustrated that his target of aggression up and left, Marek is visibly steamed.

I've got first watch.  I daresay that Nod will stay with me.  I think it might be easier to get a tick off a cat than to get him to leave now.

How bout we set up a bed or two in here.

Turning back to Fletcher, he says, And again, if you would be so kind, have the barman send out some wine and food?  And perhaps the stable boy.  I need him to fetch some tools for me.

No one else should come in or out of here without authorization, eh?

He stomps over to the his bear skins and collects them.  He takes them to another part of the barn and being laying them out, on the ground and on top of stable partitions.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Nod shakes his head in agreement.

"I'll be most keen to assist in the work. Might I suggest we work somewhere more civilized? I'd think an inn room is more secure than this stable. I can take the smaller items in my back pack, and the larger ones can be moved individually under cloaks. I see no reason to walk in horse shit while we work."

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher speaks to Marek before leaving for the inn.

We are in this together, chap. These coins are yours. I have my own. I gather that you have an important goal that requires a sizable bankroll, as do I. Let us keep working on that goal together, eh? This is yours.

Fletcher hands the coins back to Marek and pats him on the shoulder heartily.

I venture that we come out pretty well on this operation, once it is complete. But tis but a droplet of goblin squirt in the creek compared to what lies ahead for us. Now, I will see about some food and bedding.

Once done at the stables, Fletcher will find a stable boy.

Lad, here is a piece of gold for you. Go to Sir Marek and assist him with everything that he requests, within reason. If he finds satisfaction with your labor, you will receive more gold when we take our leave.

Fletcher points out Marek to the stable boy, then goes to the inn.

Mr. Ostler! My good man! I have a very special request for you. Please prepare your finest feast, with ale and wine, enough for ten men. We wish to eat in privacy. I will send word to you once the dining location is determined.

Fletcher places five pieces of platinum on the bar in front of Ostler. Then pauses.

Ah, my friend and I are in immediate need of bathing, if there are any maidens available to assist us...

Fletcher slides another piece of platinum to Ostler.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher and Wang head off to enjoy the comforts of the Inn.  Nod and the professor take the relics to his room and begin their work.

OOC - If there is anything you wish to accomplish over the next three days other than rest and relaxation feel free to post about it.  Otherwise, due to the relative safety of the Inn I will fast forward three days.  Be sure to mark off room and stable rental as well as any extras you procure.  Room = 2g per night (includes 3 meals)  Stables = 5s per night (includes feed and walks)

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
During any available down time, Nod will evaluate the dagger he received from Fletcher, copy any spells that were made available through the analysis of the Professor's research, and see about acquiring some of the materials and equipment used for alchemy, in particular, those used in potions and low grade alchemical trinkets, as described in the Craft:Alchemy skill section.

Marek will continue to work on his bear hide, trying to get it at least partially cured.

He will also ask around whether anyone has seen Grelm or Pudge.

Wang will attempt to find someone that can make him a new monk robe or the material to do it himself. He will also make any necessary repairs to his backpack and fill it with meat cheese and bread. In the rest of his down time he will jog meditate and practice with his new javelins. Wang will also seek out a local family and donate the money that he found at the forest shack to them.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher spends the bulk of his free time inviting the bar maids to his room.

He will also take Gunda out to exercise each day, and do some jogging, push-ups, stretching, etc.

On the first evening, he hosts a great feast for the fellows, the professor, the stable boy who is assisting Marek, and any bar maid's who can manage to fit it into their schedule.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Ostler put together a hell of a spread.  Roasted boar, glazed yams, three kinds of breads, a cheese wheel, a steaming pot of turnip greens, and apple cobbler for dessert.  Not to mention a bottle of red wine from the coast.

The next three days are pretty quiet.  Everyone takes care of their separate business.  They weren't a perfect team but they got the job done, and that was a pretty good feeling.
