Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher has been travelling for days, ever since he caught wind of the exhibition.  He sits up in his bed and looks down at the flyer: “The Traveling Exhibition of Doctor Phineus Krane, Professor of Antiquities and Master of Shroud Artistry.”  He had never been to the Shire of Elberwick, which was a good thing.  It was supposed to be at the Traveller's Stop Inn, on a trade route just outside the Arthfell Forest.  He had planned on getting here two days ago and hitched a ride with a lumber caravan heading north from Riverford along the Andoshen River, but they lost time along the journey after getting one of their wagons stuck in a sink hole.  He found it odd that the lumbermen didn't seem surprised, as if it happened all the time.  Fletcher helped where he could and eventually got back on the road.  They arrived in Oldfen late last night.

Oldfen from what you could tell in the dark sat upon the top of the edge of a large plateau surrounded by rolling plains.  It could be considered a small city and has large fortified walls with archer towers on the corners.

The Inn is called the Silver Bulette.  He looks around the room.  It's a nice sized room for the price, only four silver a night for two beds.  The accommodations have seen better days though.  The sheets are thread bare and the mattress and pillows are flat.  The room smells of old lumber and varnish.  There are square spots on the walls where pictures obviously hung for many years, but have since been removed for some reason.  The inn wasn't overly packed last night and there were a few customers that seemed a little shady.

Fletcher sits up and stretches.  If he's to make the Traveller's Stop Inn with daylight to spare, he'll have to be on the road soon.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher is traveling light. He grabs the few belongings he left lying on the other bed and skedaddles to the front desk of the inn. Flips a silver to any employee he sees on the way, as taught to him by his uncle. He is in search of someone who can help him locate fast transportation. Coach, horse, boat, balloon, whatever will get him to the exhibition in good time.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher steps outside and sees the clear blue sky and feels the cool morning breeze on his face.  The town is already hopping.  Farmers and merchants are hauling their wares to market.  Guardsmen are changing their shift.  Laborers shuffle off to their daily grind.

After asking around, he finds the local stables.  He is met by a large man with long blonde hair, mutton chops and a bizarre accent.  "How may I help you this fine morning?  The name's Kjell.". He reaches out to shake Fletcher's hand.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher greets Kjell with a smile and accepts his handshake.

"Well met Sir! I am told that your stables are of the finest quality and that your prices are without compare. I am here to inquire the price of a riding horse. Well rested, of course".

Fletcher scans the stable grounds, just in case it might be easier to borrow a horse rather than pay for one.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
A wide smile stretches across his Ulfen face and his thick chest broadens with pride.  "Why yes.  This is true.  My horses are bred from my fathers herd.  Durable and strong from carrying Ulfen warriors across the northern wastes."

He shows Fletcher through the stables and stops at a beautiful buff mare about 15 hands tall. "This is Gunda.  She's two years old and fresh from training.  Even at her age she is strong enough to carry a man of your...  stature."

"Excellent! I've come to the right place. Now if only her price is within my budget...".

Fletcher starts flipping through a handful of coins with a concerned look on his face.

His eyes widen and he grunts.. "Oof...  Well, my horses are the finest in Andoran.  I could not part with one for less than one hundred and fifty gold my friend."  He folds his arms and glares at Fletcher.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher does his best not to stand there with his mouth hanging open like some slack-jawed fool. He has fallen well behind schedule and needs to make something happen soon. Fleeing on a borrowed mount isn't choice #1 at the moment. If something were to go wrong then he could kiss the exhibition goodbye. Maybe his ass too. Borrowing a purse-full of coins or an oil painting was one thing, but borrowing a horse was another. Horse owners are prone to vengeance and they will hunt you down across territory lines if they have to, even if they kill another three horses while doing it. It's that kind of irrational behavior that forces Fletcher to pay for a horse from time to time, and this is one of those times.

"Say Kjell, there is something I can do for you. I do business from sea to sea. Make a lot of contacts. I'd be happy to be an ambassador for your fine stable, spreading word of the finest trained horses in the land. That's what I do, really. I promote businesses and facilitate trade in these regions. If you could bear to part with her for 9 solid platinum, then you can count on me being your ambassador for life. I'd make it a mission. It's a hell of a deal, really".

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
His expression changes instantly.  "You silver tongued devil.  Fletcher you have yourself a deal.   Can I sell you some acutraments?""  He says as he leads Gunda out of her stall by a knotted halter made from silk rope.  "Ten gold for the riding saddle, bit and bridle, four more if you want saddle bags as well.  The price is firm I'm afraid they are on consignment from a friend of mine."  He pets her nose and coos as her eyes soften.  They seem to genuinely have affection for one another.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
"Excellent! I'm looking forward to spreading the word of the world's greatest stable! And I most definitely need the saddle, bit, bridle, and bags. You've really saved the day for me Kjell and I will never forget that!".

Fletcher counts out a total of 104 gold. Not a bad deal, and on the bright side, he can always sell her for a good price if necessary. Fletcher makes haste to get on the road.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher quickly loads his gear and rides Gunda out the city gates.  He see's from here the town is perched atop the edge of a large plateau.  The road slopes down the cliff face to the west and meets with the trade route that goes off in both directions along the base of the cliff face.  As he travels down the road he passes a pair of knights in shining full plate riding heavy war horses.  They bare an insignia that looks like a golden shield with an eagle clutching a sword on it's face and a large red diamond hanging below.

Needing to be on his way he begins west to the Traveller's Stop Inn.  The journey is pleasant.  He passes several merchants going this way and that hauling wagons filled with goods.  He see's several farms off to the north in the prairie.  All the while the rusty red cliff face of the plateau rises above his left shoulder.

It's a couple hours after noon and it seems like it's been several hours since Fletcher has seen any travelers.  Approaching from the north on an overgrown farm road is what appears to be an elf of all things.  He is the first elf Fletcher has seen in these parts.

OOC - Nod, welcome to Chapter: 1.  I will let the two of you describe yourselves and make introductions.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Gunda seemed to have things under control. Fletcher leaned back in his saddle, trying to find a position that he could tolerate. The pastoral views were easy on the eyes, like something out of a Menas Dorian painting. He began to slip into a daydream that involved a future Fletcher having the wealth to construct a summer home up on the plateau when something caught his eye and shook him back to the present.

"Well I'll be the snack of a bridge troll".

Gunda halted.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Nod sees the crossroads ahead, and his adventurous mood turns spirited. The thought of order, of the learned, of art and decor, of civilization in any form brings a smile to his face, and eagerness to his steps. Nod reaches the the very spot where the roads meet, and stops to take it all in. He looks off a short distance, and raises his hand to shield his eyes. A horse. I'm going to need one of those, Nod thinks to himself. Perhaps he can convince the owner of this one to part ways with it.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher adjusted in his saddle. Yes, that is definitely an elf. A lone wandering elf in these parts must be lost, on the run, on an important mission, or out of his elfin mind. He decided to treat this one as all of the above until further notice.

Fletcher raised his left arm in something between a polite wave and a signal to halt while gripping Gunda's bridle tightly in his right hand.

"GOOD DAY SIR!".
