Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
The weary adventurers again make into the forest, baring east.  Through the forest, the travel wears on them.  The moisture from the previous nights rains is being brought into the warming air by the mid day sun.  Cuts and scrapes, nicks and bumps accumulated over the course of last couple of days are being irritated by damp clothing and constant movement.  After thirty minutes the forest begins to change.  The trees are older and grow much taller in this area. Carried softly on the breeze is a strange thumping noise. A massive hollow tree trunk towers above the surrounding woodland—once truly a forest giant. Upon one of its remaining upper limbs dangles a bone scroll case, swaying in the wind and thumping against its hollow side.  Strewn around the base of the tree are rotting logs and branches piled haphazardly where they fell.  Many are crumbling, and the earthy smell of mold and rotten wood flood your senses.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Nod strings the composite bow he got from Merek, and knocks and arrow. He begins to study the method by which the scroll case is secured to the limb, and the sturdiness of the limb itself.

Fletcher looks up and squints, sizing up the tree, trying to determine how much difficulty it would present in climbing to the top.

Marek sites down his cross bow to gauge the distance from his position to the scroll case.  He pays particular attention to where the strap is hanging on the limb.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
From the look of it, the branch upon which the scroll case is dangling is a good twenty five feet up.  When Wang picks up a rock everyone looks at him skeptically, but all are quiet...  Could he do it again??  At that range and height...  He takes a deep breath...  Holding the rock low to the ground, he seems to use his entire body like a sling shot.  His clothes whip with a "pop" as he unleashes the rock, and with a familiar whistle the rock zips through the air hitting the branch about ten feet away from the trunk.  The branch bounces from the impact...  Once...  Twice...  On the third bounce, the entire branch releases from the main tree and falls silently through the air only to crash with a thunderous THUMP!!!  All is silent for a moment when suddenly earth and rotten debris explodes from the base of the old tree and an insect the size of a wolf leaps from it's burrow.  It looks like some sort of beetle and the shiny exoskeleton of it's head, thorax, and appendages are burnt orange in color, while the large ridged plates covering it's abdomen are dark emerald green.  It makes a strange clicking sound as it waves it's antennae in the air and scans the scene with it's black compound eyes.

OOC - Wang is within 15 feet, everyone else is 25 feet back or so.  Give me your actions and rolls.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Round: 1

Nod fires his short bow and hits the giant beetle between the plates of his shoulder and it writhes in pain.  Fletcher fires his longbow, but the beetle just ducks under his arrow as it flies past.  Marek runs up just to the right and behind Wang and fires his crossbow.  The bolt hits the creature in it's hard thick exoskeleton and the shaft splinters on impact as it bounces off doing no damage.  The beetle makes a strange shreaking sound as it runs up to Wang, who responds with a duo of spinning kicks at it's head.

15:32, Today: Dungeon Master, on behalf of Wang, rolled 4 using 1d20+3.  unarmed attack.
15:32, Today: Dungeon Master, on behalf of Wang, rolled 11 using 1d20+3.  unarmed attack.

The first kick comes up short as the creature pulls back instinctively.  The second kick smacks into its head but does no apparent damage.  It then straightens its back legs and contorts it's body so that the tip of it's abdomen is pointing forwards underneath it's body.  The tip of it's abdomen ends in strange looking nipple like structure and some greenish liquid sprays out all over Wang and Marek.

15:44, Today: Dungeon Master, on behalf of Wang, rolled 7 using 1d20+6.  Reflex Save.
15:43, Today: Dungeon Master, on behalf of Marek Kreegan, rolled 4 using 1d20+3.  Reflex Save.
15:45, Today: Dungeon Master, for the NPC Giant Bombardier Beetle, rolled 7 using 2d6.  acid damage.

Marek and Wang both take 7 acid damage.

The liquid burns and sizzles on their skin as the acid eats away their flesh.

Actions and rolls please!

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Marek feels the immediate sting of the acid on his exposed skin and winces.  Still running full bore at the beetle, he makes the decision that it is now or never.

He whips around Nirishi's scythe and prepares to sweep at the creatures legs, moving past the creature in the process.

Round: 2

As Wang turns to run, the beetle sees an opening and bites at his back but he easily evades the creatures attack.

05:45, Today: Dungeon Master, for the NPC Giant Bombardier Beetle, rolled 13 using 1d20+4.  attack of opportunity.

Wang
runs back thirty feet and rinses himself off.  Nod reaches into his spell component pouch and retrieves a small piece of cured leather.  With that, he utters an arcane word while making an intricate gesture with his hand and the leather is consumed.    He quickly moves up to support MarekFletcher fires again at the beetle, but again it ducks under his arrow and it flies into the woods.  Marek draws Nirashi's masterwork scythe and brings it to bare on the giant insect.    He rears back and steps into the beetle as it recoils from it's missed attack on Wang and brings the blade up into the intersection between it's thorax and abdomen separating them cleanly.  It's abdomen thumps to the ground while it's front half flails wildly before turning on it's back and curling it's legs inward.  Its movements slowly diminish until it comes to a dead stop, milky yellow fluids oozing into the leaf litter.

Nice one.  Combat over.  Experience awarded.

Nod attempts to corral Merek and Wang together in order to treat their wounds. Nod empties his water skin onto the worst effected areas. Nod looks around to see if there is an additional water source, or a natural lime deposit, or mossy soil (high in pH) to help treat the wounds

11:47, Today: Nod rolled 14 using 1d20+9.  Alchemy check to assist in treatment.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Marek begins stripping off the breastplate to check for damages, as well as the rest of the equipment he had that might be affected.

He is in a considerable amount of pain but appreciates the effort Nod has made to make him feel better.

Thanks, Nod!  That does take a little of the sting out.  My gratitude.

He looks at the severed insect and then back at the tree, where a simple stone sent the recent chain of events started.

Staying where is is, letting Nod tend to the burns, he scans for the scroll case.

Fletch!  Locate the scroll case before another bug comes up and swallows it!

"Yes, Fletcher, see if you can retrieve the scroll case, but do be careful."

Nod digs through his pack and retrieves the Vial of Pure Water, and the 2 Vials of Unholy Water. He sets to work identifying the properties of the items to see if they could lend assistance to the current situation.
