Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher halts a moment.

My horse!

Fletcher begins stammering, unable to put together the next sentence, not unlike a person suffering a stroke. Then he turns to run back to the forest again.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Oh, great. Well that's a load off my shoulders. Let me see that a moment.

Fletcher takes Wang's backpack, does two spins and heaves the backpack as high into the trees as possible.

There! Wang backpack safe now too. Maybe Marek help Wang retrieve backpack.

He turns again to jog back to the forest.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Marek watches after the retreating comrade, a non-plussed look over his face.

He turns to Wang and says, Don't worry, Wang.  What fool doesn't tether his horse when he dismounts?  Bad habit!

I'll wait for you here, until you get your pack.

Marek goes to take a seat on a random rock or post.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher rushes to the spot where he thought he had left Gunda in the forest with Marek and Wang.  He doesn't see her at first and scans the area frantically.  He cups his hands as he is about to shout for her when off through the brush he spots a glint of color.  He makes his way through the brush to see Gunda standing with a forest buck.  This is quite the mesmerizing scene with the last of the suns light filtering through the forest.  He's a large one, probably twelve points at least.  They are sharing in a patch of pink flowering shamrocks.  Suddenly the buck hears Fletcher's approach and looks at him a moment before bounding off into the depths of the forest.  Gunda leisurely raises her head to see Fletcher approach, she again lowers hear head at Fletcher with her ears back before going back to her meal.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Ahhh, there you are. Good girl. We better get back to the inn now.

I was worried that you would run off but you didn't go too far. I'm sorry those two shard-born mutton-heads walked off without you.

Fletcher mounts up and rides back to the stables.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Fletcher walks Gunda up to the stable doors.  She stops and looks back at Fletcher.  He pulls a bit harder on her reins and she eventually relents, but sighs despondently as he leads her to her stall.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Nod sees all the commotion, and approaches his companions.

"I'm going to head back inside, and try to finish this deal. You are all welcome to join me if its not too much trouble. May I have the pack full of valuable antiquities once you're done throwing it around. I believe there is someone inside who would like to have a look at them in exchanges for your freedom."

Nod walks over to the pack, shaking his head in disappointment.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Marek puts up a hand before the team heads inside:

Hold on a moment, boys.  I seem to remember what happened last time we were in a room with a bunch of strangers.  By the looks of it, there are more people in there than before.

I'm heading to the stable to the area we killed the owl with this stuff.  Bring the sheriff and the professor, and NOBODY else, eh?

Marek heads to the stable.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
"I seriously believe if they had ill intentions, they would be out here stomping our hides into the dirt. I suggest we just get this over with. If they choose to crawfish on the deal, at most we are out some labor, and if they make a big deal out of it, then maybe we'll just burn the inn down while they are discussing how they got over on us."

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Marek stops in his tracks after Nod speaks.

He hesitates a moment before swinging around.  A very frustrated look on his face.

Listen, Nod!  I don't claim to know everything there is to know about negotiation and bartering.  But I have been around my father all of my life and he was a pretty decent trader.

One of the things he always practiced was neutral ground.  He never brought customers to the armory, and he never went to his associates places of business to handle such things.  One of the reasons he did this, he told me, was to have as little interuptions, as possible.

In this case, possible interuptions may include loss of life.  Do you get my drift?  You may trust this professor, but I don't trust anybody in that room.

Marek visibly becomes more agitated.

If we go in there with these valuables, there will be talk.  When and if they are given back to our care, lots of people are going to know about it.  The more people that know, the more the talk.....

Surely the sheriff and the professor will not be too put out if we ask them to not do this in a crowded room.

Marek takes off the bearskin roll with the items in it and holds them out to Nod.

Or...we can do it your way.  Go ahead and we'll see what happens.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
"I believe we should all be in agreement before we act. If you feel uncomfortable with the exchange happening at the Inn, we can do it elsewhere. I'll head back inside and ask the Professor and the Sheriff to join us in the stables. We should probably have an alternate plan, should they be suspicious of that request, and refuse. I'm open to suggestions for a way forward in that event."

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Listen...all I'm saying is that if we go display this to the entire inn, whether there is any espionage or not, we will really have to watch our backs.  We don't have a Mercenary League detail to safeguard your investment like my father did.

I would feel better if we do this outside the inn, but if they decline, I'm all in with you, Nod.  I have your back, cause I know you'll have mine.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
As Fletcher rides back to the stables, he lets Gunda run as fast as she wants to work some of her energy off. The anger that Fletcher felt earlier begins to wear off. He holds himself responsible for the mix-up. He tells himself to always remember that Wang and Marek, while very skilled warriors and possibly very well-learned in their own special way, may not be the sharpest swords in the armory. Mr. Nod always seems to have a well-grounded and mature perception of the world around him, but Sirs Wang and Marek... well, if treated in a similar fashion as he treats his nephew Theodric, he should be able to enjoy an acceptable working relationship with them.

Hopefully Wang was able to retrieve his precious backpack that he oddly has so much affection for. And Sir Marek, a stout drink or two should smooth things over.

As the stables come into view, Fletcher sees Marek waiting by the fence. Fletcher thinks to himself, hopefully he is not there waiting for me.

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
Nod easily convinces the sheriff and professor to meet in the stables.  After a few minutes the three of them walk out of the darkness into the warm light from the lanterns lit around the stables entrance.  The professor chattering away about the process they will be undertaking to recreate the King Narven's shroud.  "...and so then the tricky part is the timing, one minute to long and it'll burn the shroud to ashes...  ah here we are..."  Sheriff Blunnde looks around cautiously, "Ya know one of the drawbacks of being out here is, if someone were planning something there aren't many witnesses..."

Re: Chapter 1: Into the Haunted Forest
"Well, I assure you, Sheriff, our intentions are nothing of the kind. Professor, I hope you find everything is in order with the artifacts we retrieved. I believe the agreement was that these fine gentlemen will have their names cleared, and I will be permitted access to your research for spells and the like. I think it would be a fine gesture, sheriff, if you would make it known around town that we are men of our word, and of the highest character."

Nod gestures for Merek to hand over the pack of artifacts

"Professor, when and where would be an appropriate time for us to exchange knowledge?"
