Back in the US

Many, many hours and three flights later (one had been diverted due to a terrorist hijacking and hostage situation on the tarmac at Bogota) you arrive at JFK and finally meet Robert in the flesh. From there it's a short hour and a quarter hop to Portland, ME, and only about 2 and a half hours later than expected.
Stepping out of the terminal the chill hits hard after the tropical warmth of Cuba - it's barely 10 degrees celcius (50 F) and expected to drop to freezing that night.

Melissa Messervy, now wrapped up in a thick coat and winter trousers, stepped out into the Portland air and smiled.

This felt more like home. Wheeling her suitcase, she quickly walked over to the SUV.

"Can you open the boot please?" she asked, forgetting that was not the term for the luggage area of a vehicle in American English.

Back in the US 1500 hrs

Once everyone was in, Jack drove to the cheap motel where he'd arranged accommodation.
"Antonio and I checked out Boston while you were getting a tan down in Cuba. Spoke to the police and surviving band members, their roadies and hotel staff, even a few groupies still hanging about."
"Everyone says basically the same thing. Black-clad roughs burst into the hotel hallway via a service stairwell after blowing the fire door. They used 9mm uzis, and killed six hotel employees in the service stairwell. Four of the bands security and two friends of the group were killed in their rooms and out in the hallway, while one off duty police officer was killed when they made their getaway in a stolen van, which later turned up abandoned and burnt out in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The attack was estimated to have taken just three minutes, with the main hallway assault taking just over 55 seconds.
"No prints were found and besides the copious amounts of brass and the doors broken in with a sledge hammer, no other traces were left."
"Fiora's husband, guitarist Richard Kalmer, and five others were injured and are still in hospital. Two are still critical with one of them not expected to live."
"The FBI is looking into left-wing hate groups as possible culprits due to Fiora's conservative leanings, but that trail is going nowhere."
"The attackers were brutal. One of the security had surrendered when it looked suicidal to keep fighting. One laughed as they shot him in the back of the head on the way out."

As he finished speaking he pulled into the motel carpark.
"Go get some sleep and we'll talk about what you've found over dinner."

A few much needed hours of sleep later (for about half the group anyway) and everyone gathered for dinner in Jacks room.
"So what's the plan? Are we going to try talking to Smith in his office, grab him off the street, sneak in after hours, or what?"
A look through the local phone book had shown many, many "Smith's" as would be expected of such a common name. There were only a handful of listings which possibly matched his initials ("J", "S", or "L" depending on which bit of intel you were looking at), none of which looked like law offices (all residential).

She was mostly refreshed and looking forward to cracking on with this case.

Re: Back in the US 2000 hrs

Karl, Melissa and Antonio jogged past the target house, stopping outside to tie a shoelace and take a drink or two while they quickly observed the property. Not much had changed since the house had last been advertised for sale - no obvious work had been carried out besides a few different plants in the garden, all currently denuded of leaves as they prepared for their winter dormancy. An expensive late model BMW sat in the driveway alongside an even more expensive Aston Martin. Several lights glowed through closed curtains with the occasional shadow passing by inside indicating there was at least one person home.
On the street a battered minivan drove slowly past and around the corner, and across the street a man shrouded in a heavy coat was walking his dog. Otherwise, the neighbourhood was quiet, most smart people staying inside out of the cold.

"Nice cars," commented Karl.
"Must be about a quarter of a million just sitting in the driveway."
Shoe "re-tied" he slowly jogged on, turning the corner and heading towards their pick up point at Fort Allen Park a few hundred metres away.
"You get any video as you drove past?" he spoke into his radio to Robert as they moved on. He hoped Michael had the forethought to pass his phone to Robert for the task.

Re: Back in the US 2000 hrs

The three runners moved on to the pick up point, noting the battered minivan had stopped about halfway between the target house and pick up point in the park. A quick glance showed at least two people, a man and woman, were still sitting in the front. A shadow seemed to indicate a third in the back but the light was too poor to confirm.
Several other vehicles were parked at the pick up point. The park seemed a popular location to look out over the harbour, or leave your car when running along the waterside trail below. One of the cars started up as the runners approached Robert and Michael, driving slowly past before rapidly accelerating with a squeal of rubber once they reached the street.

There's at least one smart phone in the vehicle. I have no problem with you using google earth or some other mapping website to check the area out, in fact I actively encourage you to do it!
The target address is 22 Eastern Promenade, East End, Portland. Use any and all online resources you can find to scope out the property and the neighbourhood. It's unlikely you'll find a floorplan, but there is a walkthrough on one of the real estate sites that should give you a good feel for most of the property.

Melissa hadn't had anything metal in her navel since a stud at the age of 18 and that was long done.

She looked back at him, drawing on her SIS training to remain calm.

"He ain't my pimp, Napoleon", she said, "You shoot me in the street, you're going to get the entire neighbourhood out here and trust me, that isn't going to be nice. Seriously, I put up with enough jerks like you at the club".

Both of the man's companions moved to back him up, the woman to a position where she might attempt to intercept Antonio, the second man a little further back.
Even through the thick winter clothing the woman was clearly very fit. If she and Antonio were to have a child, they'd probably have a good shot at taking out almost any body building competition.
The second man was rather more unassuming. Although somewhat heavier in build that his two companions, he was in almost all other ways the average of the three.
Besides the revolver allegedly pressed into Melissa's midriff, none were showing weapons.

You were just the bait, but now your also a human shield and hostage all at the same time. You see I knew the scene was all wrong the minute I saw the CIA issue Suburban and all the silhouettes inside."

He relaxed the arm he had around her waist a little, "You called me over here princess. What's the point if you and yours aren't trying to get the jump on me, because this totally reeks of set up. Mongo hasn't jumped me yet because he hasn't decided if I'm buffing or if it's worth risking the gun going off in your belly. And a couple gun shots? Most civilians don't like the idea of gun in their neighbourhood so much that they will dismiss it as something else. A car backfiring. A dumb kid playing with fireworks."

He then shrugged, wiggling the pistol in her belly, "So why are the lot of you wasting my time?"
