The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
A month and a half has passed and winter has come to Sandpoint. The days start later, and end earlier.

The first few weeks after Thistletop was a frenzy of activity and at the same time  rest from hard work the party had undergone since the festival. Many drinks were bought for them and they were asked to share their tales.

Then the group had travelled to Maiginmar for a week and a half and spent time in the city. It wasn't a pleasurable affair and had been fairly busy with shopping trips, talking to merchants, and securing items. Then returning to SandPoint on a particularly nasty overcast day.

Every day now was overcast. Rain fell occasionally. And every so often the temperature stopped and your breath could be seen when you spoke.

The intent of the party was and has been to sit out the winter and when spring came to renew investigations into the goblin threat, and who Nualia's contacts in Maginmar were.

For that was the biggest tidbit of information from Orick. Nualias had been getting help...information fed to her..by someone in Maginmar.

But there was time.

And Lan trained with his swords learning how to utilize a different form of fighting...Allura visited the Smith with some raw platinum and had him hammer out rings of metal her and Param magicked to to float above Allura, Zenfira, and Params head.

Talon had gone crazy digging into every bit of information on Thassilon and the old elven kingdom locking himself away for long hours with old tomes and maps.

Zenfira had nightly regaled The Rusty Dragon with stories of the parties adventures and between that and Aldern Foxgloves strange comings and goings, always attentive to Zenfira...always leaving small gifts...he alluded to wanting much more from her...he was courting, but there is an arrogance to him that is abrasive. He looks down on commoners and talks of being better.

His dog was always with him...until the last time a few days ago. When asked about his dog...Aldern turned introspective briefly and said hes taken a turn fir the worse. i had to ...leave him.. Aldern looked like he was taking a turn for the worse, gaunt and pale.

Only Tanis seemed bored with the time spent.and he and Orick had gotten to know each other better and Tanis found a kindred soul in the mercenary, someone who had a strange sense of loyalty to those he fought and shed blood with.

Now here it was the 1st day of Kuthona, the first month of winter and the group gathered for the first time since arriving back in SandPoint.

id like each party member to make a d20 roll plus cha modifier for rumor gathering

Hearing and seeing Aldern look more and more sick she worried and asked Param if he could help the man or even his pet.

Param smiled at Lan's proposal. He'd spent a fair bit of time at the pub listening to the ways Zenfira told their stories and trying to help the mayor's cousin get over his loss. He'd found it good to be friends with the brewer and had kept the others' mugs of ale full most of the time they'd joined him at the Rusty Dragon.

He had spent a fair bit of time helping Allura with the halos for the three Aasimar and was more than pleased to see that his spells had come to work out in their favor.

Talon arrived, looking distracted and carrying a large tome under one arm. He greeted everyone with a nod and short remarks about how he was glad they'd made it back, but there was little emotion in his voice to let them know he really meant it. Within moments of taking a seat at one end of the table, his nose was buried in the book he'd brought here with him. His studies had consumed him recently, he seemed to pursue them voraciously. Even so, his training in the Sovyrian realm had taught him to proportion at least a little of his attention upon his surroundings. Thus he listened to the conversation around him while his sharp, almond-shaped eyes continued to digest the ancient writing upon the brittle pages.

Zenfira had been spending more and more time with Aldern.  The attention that the man was giving her was very flattering and she welcomed it.  She was not very approving of some of the abrasive comments that he made about those whom he viewed as beneath him, which was ironic considering that Zen was hardly more than a commoner herself, but perhaps it had something to do with the physical malady that the man seemed to be suffering from.  Alderns diminishing health was worrying and she was also concerned about his dog, hoping that the poor animal was alright.

Aldern had invited her to visit his family estate in Magnimar and it hardly seemed fair to have someone in poor health travel long distances to visit her.  Zen had told Aldern that she would go and visit him, and it seemed like the companions were destined for Magnimar once more after hearing tell of Nualias contacts in the city.

His attitude was troubling though, and that was something that Zenfira dwelled on throughout the day.  The way that he spoke sometimes was just...strange.  He could be charming and witty one minute and the next...something else.  Maybe she would have to talk to Param about this...

There was of course Lan and Alluras nuptials, and Zenfira was alternately excited like a little girl over her friends happiness and planning out a little ladies evening that would, by Cayden, not be quiet.

Param nursed the beer he'd gotten at the bar and when all were gathered shared what he'd learned, saying, "According to what I've learned, The Runelords of ancient lore put contingency plans in place to bring themselves back. Like the elves, they fled the planet when the meteor was going to strike to avoid the coming cataclysm. Part of those contingencies were the reawakening of the runewells placed throughout Varisia. Additionally 'servants' would be tasked to gather 'emotions' sympathetic to their power. Lust would gather those consumed with lust. Wrath for wrath. Envy for envy, greed for greed, sloth for sloth and gluttony for gluttony."

He then added, "I think our missing Paladin was investigating the return of the Runelords. I've heard tales of a Paladin of Sarenrae who'd been asking questions along the lines of what I learned..."

I heard some local children singing a song about The Varisian Bogie Man...They called him the Skinsaw Man, and told me that he was a legendary killer who prayed on the wealthy. They started talking about whether he was real or not, one of the kids who's father works at the docks said his dad told him the Skinsaw Man is real and is out on the hunt.

Lan draws a beer and regaled the group with what HE had found out.
"Seems when she was in Magnimar, Nualia dropped a name in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was hunting a 'rival' named Xanesha. No idea who or what Xanesha is, but she's also likely caught up in Nualia's goals. And Nualia was doing business with a cult. It's called the Skinsaw Cult. Doubt that's a coincidence. "

Param grew more and more concerned the more he heard. Finally he spoke up saying, "So we know Nualia was trying to open one of these Rune Wells to allow a Rune Lord to return. And we know that she was speaking to at least one other like-minded person. We also know that she was somehow affiliated with this Skinsaw cult. I propose we track them down and put an end to any others trying to bring the Runelords back again.

Talon, still somewhat preoccupied, perked up at the turn in the conversation.

"The flight of my people so long ago is something very personal to me. I feel further investigation into this matter to be very, very compelling..." to the point of revenge! He did not utter the last out loud, but he certainly felt that way. This course of action paralleled his goals very well.

"As for my research, I can verify what Param shared. I might add though, to you as my friends, that the elves also had - and still have - contingencies of their own. I believe that I am, in some way, one of those. It seems that as we've uncovered more of Nualia and her plans, the Runewell and so forth, that my magic has increasingly returned! So yes, I have some personal investment in learning more of this!"

Zenfira had been quiet during the discussion, her thoughts occasionally drifting...elsewheres. At the mention of the Sheriff, she slowly rose from her seat.

"I had heard something about a creature hunting folk to the north of Sandpoint.  It sounded too fantastical to be true but now...I wonder.  Could this be what the sheriff wants to talk to us about?"

Absorbed in both his tome and the conversation with his friends, Talon looked more than a little annoyed to be interrupted. It took a moment for the gravity of the messenger's words to sink in. There had already been too many coincidences in Sandpoint to ignore the fact that just while they were discussing oddities and connections to their recent adventures that the Sheriff would summon them. Talon glanced at Param and nodded toward the door, snapping his book shut and dropping it into his pack.

"I wonder what this is all about," he said quietly to the Aasimar as they exited the Inn. Just before leaving, Talon glanced casually over his shoulder to see if anyone had taken note of their sudden departure.

The party makes their way up to the Sheriff's office. When they enter, they See Orick in the office putting on his armor. Several of the militia are present, senior members at least and are talking to Sheriff Belor.

Behind The Shoanti Warrior sitting in a chair was Ibor Thorn. The young man was covered in blood and was staring dejectedly down at his hands which were clasped together in his lap.

The Sherrif took the party to his own private office and began "First, let me thank you again for all you've done for Sandpoint. It's fortunate you've proven yourselves so capable, because we've a problem I think you can help us with-a problem I wish I didn't have to involve anyone with, but one that needs dealing with now before the situation grows worse. "Put simply, we have a murderer in our midst one who, I fear, has only begun his work. Some of you doubtless remember the Late Unpleasantness, how this town nearly tore itself apart in fear as Chopper's slayings went on unanswered. I'm afraid we might have something similar brewing now. " Last night, the murderer struck at the sawmill. There are two victims, and they're ... they're in pretty gruesome shape. The bodies were discovered by one of the mill workers, a man named lbor Thorn, and by the time my men and I arrived on the scene, a crowd of curious gawkers had already sprung up. I've got my men stationed there now, keeping the mill locked down, but the thing that bothers me isn't the fact that we have two dead bodies inside. It's the fact that this is actually the second set of murders we've had in the last few days. " I come to you for help in this matter-my men are good, but they are also green. They were barely able to handle themselves against the goblins, and what we're facing now is an evil far worse than goblins. I need the help. But I'm afraid you'll need the help too. You see, I'm afraid that this particular murderer knows one of you as well."

Talon listened intently and made mental notes. "A moment Param," he said to the cleric.

"Sheriff, you make it sound like you already know who the murderer is... If that's the case, why don't we just go and arrest him, or her... Unless this relationship to one of us you mentioned is that much of a complicating factor.?"

"And, if you would, tell us of the other murder and why you think the two are related."

There was a growing knot in the pit of the elf's stomach. He had hoped, like many in the community had, that the defeat of Nualia and her ilk, as well as the cleansing of the underground temple, would be the end of woe and worry here in Sandpoint... at least for a while. And he supposed that it had, but a handful of weeks was but a fleeting moment to one so long-lived as the Sovyrian elf.

Sheriff Belor paused and then said as he pulled out a tattered piece of paper with bloodstains on it and handed it to Zenfira.

No I do not know who is behind it. Nor will I guess. During the Recent Unpleasantness, we thought we knew who did it and arrested a stranger passing through. The town was overjoyed until that night the another life was taken. The Old Sheriff. If I hadnt happened on the scene, the killer would have escaped. I wont make the same mistake as he.

Then he looked at Zenfira who held the note saying. That note was found pinned to the sleeve of the most recent victim by a piece of wood. Personally I think the note was left to throw us off the trail. However there are certain people in town that if they could cast shadows of doubt unto you, he would. As you know Titus Scarnetti is not a fan.

Now onto what I know...First, The most recent murders occurred last night at The Sandpoint Lumber Mill. The Crime Scene is intact and awaiting your presence. We will go there in a  moment first since I want to get the bodies buried soon. . But, before we leave for there...

Ibor Thorn outside in the chair discovered the bodies and came here. I have interrogated him and think he is innocent, however you may want to ask him questions.

My only suspect is Ven Vinder, who runs the general store, as one of his daughters was carrying on with one of the slain. But I do not believe Ven would have this work that was performed in him...a beating resulting in death, maybe...but not what you will see.

The other murders occured at a barn south of The next small town Valduria heading towards Maginmar. Three Merchants were slain. There Bodyguard was quite distraught, and acting very unstable so we sent him to Habes Sanitorium, where he is under the care of the staff. Its a few hours ride east.

I think both murders are linked because a rune you will recognize was found at both locations. The Rune is that seven pointed star like was found on the Runewell below the Glassworks.

Talon followed the others, mentally bracing himself for what he would see. If it was as bad as the Sheriff made it sound, then he hoped he had the stomach for it. This world could be so beautiful and wonderful, so vibrant and alive in a way that the Sovyrian realm was not, it being in a perpetual timelessness. Yet in his short time since returning, the elf had seen horrific things he'd perhaps read of in histories, but could really not fathom until witnessing them.

Here it begins again, he thought as he walked, his hand holding to the silvered, dragon headed sword handle in his pocket, drawing strength from the magic of the pommelstone.

The group made their way down the hill from the Sheriffs toward the river and the Mill. A crowd had gathered outside and whispers of what was going on acompanied them as they made their way.

Sheriff Belor remarked It wont be long before Scarnetti arrives. Make the most of it. as they approached the Mill. Two nervous looking Guards stood, crossbows in hand, preventing the crowd that had formed on the road and path near the mill from gaining access to the building. The 4 story building stood tall, exceptionally quiet. It was unusual because Scarnetti had his men working at all hours and the mill was exceptionally noisy. But like many things...you had gotten used to the noise.

Immediately Tanis begins looking around for tracks, but hes far too late as any chance of discovering anything unusual has been ruined by the crowd.

The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
A walkway around the mill jutting out over the river has a staircase going down to the left, to where the water wheels access point and the gearing mechanism that powers the mill. an open doorway leads to the fist floor.

The first floor has a door to the right immediately upon entry that is cracked and shows a staircase going up.

The floor of this level has bins for wood refuse of varying types. with chutes in the celing above going into the bins. Additionally there are tools hanging in abumdance both to work on the lumber and the machinery.

Going up to the second floor by the stairs , and though the stairs continue up to the offices, this floor is the site of the murders.

The floor is coated with bloody sawdust, and its obvious a scuffle took place here.

Machinery and chains hang from the ceiling to bring logs up the outside chimney to be worked on and chutes to the floor below are in 4 locations.

The Log Splitter on the town side of the Mill has been used for a totaly different thing as one of Ven Vinders daughters, the one who was seeing Benny Harker, had been pushed onto the Log splitter and her body was almost cut in half from skull to waist. Spatters of her boy were slung all over the interior of the mill.

Stuck in the floor near the Log Solitter is a hand axe, that would have been used to trim branches from the logs, but currently is stuck in the floor with the handle facing Katrina's right hand about 6 feet from it.

Benny harker's body is pinned to the wall across from the Log Solitter, near a table with several bloody tools that look like some of them had been used on him. His hands and feet are nailed to the wall and his body has been mutilated, his lower jaw is gone.

The rune you are very familiar with is carved into his chest. The symbol for greed facing upwards towards his mutilated face.

A rotting stench fills the air.

The Sheriff stands in the doorway, and unpleasant look on his face and says Nobody else in town has been up here except Thorn, and he came to get me the minute he came to work and saw this.

Shocked and sickened by what he witnessed, Lan dashes to an outside window and vomits heavily. Heaving breath in and out, he soon gets it under control. The grimmest mien he has ever worn falls into place on his face. "Tanis, Talon, and Param, we are all perceptive. Let's look for any clues we can gather. Allura, Zenfira....it's rather gruesome. You might prefer not seeing this" he says. He scans the crime scene for poisons, both active and inactive.

The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
Tanis moved over in front of the Log Splitter and looked at the horribly distroyed body of the older daughter of his friend Ven Vinder, and the Sheriffs words echoed in his mind...The Only Suspect I have is Ven Vinders The Younger Shayliss had made advances on Tanis one of the first days he had been in town, but hed never personally met Katrina. The blade still protruded from her abdomen and chest, part of her face had been tore away as she had died her head sluumped down to hit the blade. He couldnt find any clues such was the horrific vision that took his presence of mind away.

Lan was looking at Banny Harkers body, nailed to the wall with hooks mailed for moving logs.

Allura stood back fighting down the urge to vomit, her face covered with a mask again. and she couldnt see any indication of magical residues anywhere.

Param walked in and his face took a grim demeanor and he looked at the scene and immediately his eyes went to out of place hand axe. from its angle and how it was embedded in the floor he knew it had been in Katrina's hand before she hit the Log Splitter. He moved to it and looked at it...there was some gray leathery flesh between the blade and the floor...had she hit someone...something with the hand axe? there was no blood though.

Twin lines of tears streamed down the sharp features of the Sovyrian Elf. Talon looked upon the scene with a mixture of horror, sorrow, and a simmering anger. His mind and heart were split, his sharp intellect churning out possibilities, analyzing them, turning them over and over like boulders in a rushing river while his emotions ebbed like a sea with each breath of his heaving chest. Long moments passed as he struggled with the scene before him, saying nothing, interacting with no one.

Finally, he exhaled, shuddering, and the tears stopped flowing. The populace would not wait much longer, and the killer, or killers, were still at large.

Unwilling to touch the remains, Talon exercised a bit of his returning magical power to sort through the bodies and their remains as he looked for clues.

Little brother can you handle the situation here ? I need to get to Vins if he is to hear of this it should come from a friend. I'll meet you at the sheriffs when I'm finished. I agree that Vin would never have done such a thing. Please let any one who makes such an accusation know that if they accuse my friend in his time of grief they will answer directly to me. "I'll go after him," the elf said to the others. "Sometimes he listens to me... I'll fetch him back as quickly as possible."

Pulling himself from the scene, Talon raced to catch up with Tanis whose lengthy and purposeful strides were carrying him rapidly away from the mill.

"Tanis," Talon said when he caught up. "Let me accompany you. I know that Vinder is your friend, but you shouldn't go anywhere alone until we know more."

Though prideful, the elf was not so self-absorbed to think that he could help his large friend break the news, but he could be an extra set of eyes and ears during what would be, undoubtedly, an emotional situation.

He's asking me? The elf thought as he walked. If not for the horror he'd just seen and the prospect of what was about to happen looming before him, he would have laughed at the notion that anyone was asking him for advice on social tact. His countless years of study and training had left him much bereft of this sort of experience.

"Forthrightly and honestly would be my only advice Tanis, but I'm really not the one you should ask about such things. Lan or Zenfira would be much better at this sort of thing... but they're not here. You'll have to just do your best. Remember, we have no answers yet. Hopefully our companions will come to some determinations or find some clues. It is likely your friend will be very demanding. It'll be your job to try and calm him or talk him down from anything rash... Does Vinder have any other family?"

Lan and Talon both moved to the hand axe and squatted near it examining the flesh Param pointed out. Lan looked puzzled. Talon however said right away This is Ghoul Flesh. Can you smell the stench? and no sign of blood anywhere. its been long dead.

Tanis was getting angrier by the second and his eyes bulged red and he fought the rage down and stalked from the room to the stairway...Talon leapt to his feet and followed him out...and a conversation ensued in the hall.

Lan nods solemnly. "Param, can you find any references in town regarding ghouls? I think we all need to be well-read on the subject if the Skinsaw man is a ghoul or a half-ghoul. Unfortunately our best tracker just left. But it seems...how did the victims end up here? If they were carried here unconscious the girl would never have been able to hit ghoul flesh with an axe. I can't imagine Scarlotti allowing a pair of sweethearts access to the upper floor here. So the Skinsaw must have chased them here, meaning there ought to be a trail outside to backtrack. Or am I wrong? Lan asks.

Param paused and said, "Hmm, well now that i know this is a ghoul, I can tell you a few things. They are a particularly rabid form of undead. As fast as a human, able to see in perfect darkness.they are hunters and frequently do so in packs.  Their skin is like hardened leather and their claws and teeth are sharp and hardened like steel. The transmit diseases through their attacks as dead flesh gets lodged under their claws and between their teeth and it festers.  Their body produces a toxin that is a paralytic.

They are more resistant to channelling than other undead.

Their packs are normally lead by a stronger Ghoul called a Ghast...and they are more intelligent and more resistant and produce a stench that causes nausea.”

He rose from his kneeling position and made to move out of the room and the building. He'd have hoped to have caught up to Tanis, but he knew the man moved to fast for him to catch up unless he'd had his horse at the ready.

Zenfira had trailed behind the rest of the group, her thoughts on the strange note that the Sheriff had handed her.  It might have been the ramblings of a fan, someone who had seen her performances with the acting troupe, were it not for the means of its delivery.

Covering her mouth with her hand, Zenfira walked towards the bodies.  As gruesome as they were, she had to see them.  She would rather not, and avoid the nightmares that she knew would be lurking around her bed tonight, but this note had been pinned to one of the victims.  Somehow these murders and this note were connected but she could not fathom how.

Zen fought back the urge to empty her stomach as she walked slowly around the halved body of the Millers daughter.  She had not known Katrina other than in passing but that was little comfort.  Tanis knew the family and he must be torn up inside, though he did not look it.  Who could have done this to such a thing to this girl?  Undead had been here, been part of this scene in some foul manner, but none of the stories that she knew of had undead using tools to dismember their victims.  This was not the action of a mindless shuffling undead.

Turning her gaze from the millers daughter, Zenfira looked over to where the boy had been pinned.  Benny.  Poor Benny.  The paper of the note crinkled as her hand closed tightly around it.  The mutilation of the poor boy would haunt her nights for some time.  Who could have done this to him?  What did this have to do with her?  Why would someone leave a note for her here?  Were they expecting her to be here?

The note had been attached to Benny.  As Zenfira looked the body over, she was struck by a chilling thought.  Could these murders have been meant for her benefit?  Was someone trying to impress her?  Zen crumpled the note against her belly, horrified at the idea that she might have been responsible for these deaths.  Her chest began to feel tight and the air in the room heavy.  Zen was having trouble breathing.

Meant for her.

"....no...." Zen voice was a choked squeak as she felt the weight of the murder scene pressing in on her.  She turned away from the hanging body of Benny and rushed out of the room.  She moved swiftly, stumbling a little on the stairs and did not stop until she had exited the mill.  Oblivious to the murmurs of the crowd outside, Zenfira leaned heavily against the side of the mill, one hand covering her face as she wept.

And coming down the street with a mixture of Anger and Fear and sorrow on his face was the General Store Owner, Ven Vinders. Hot on his heels was his other daughter Shayliss with tears already streaming down her face.

Param, Lan and The Sheriff were still at the murder scene while Allura stood on the stais, mask on her face concealing her emotions.

Pushing through the crowd Tanis stops his friend gripping his shoulders, looking into Vins eyes, Tears rolling down his face the Shoanti try's to speak choking on the words at first then finally gaining a little control. No man should ever out live his children, Vin you don't need to see Katrina as she is now. She fought back hard and struck the creature that did this with her hand ax. The only lead we have she gave us, a piece of undead flesh stuck to the floor with her blade.

He stands there in the middle of the crowd hugging his friend both of them sobbing. I know not how to comfort you my friend, but I do know how to extract vengeance from those responsible for this deed most follow. Staring into Vin Vender's tear soaked eyes the Shoanti let the fires that burn within show in his own eyes. Allowing his friend to see the anger and rage he is feeling, I  give you my word friend and swear it on the blade of my ax I will track down who or what ever did this to your child and deliver it's head to you in a sack.

Then the warrior wraps his arms around Vin hugging him as the shop owners body shudders with grief filled sobs, the warrior whispers in the store owners ear, Allow me to do what I do best, you go home grief and prepare to bury your child. Let me hunt and kill.

"I just want you to know that I am sincerely sorry for what has happened, and I concur with what Tanis has just told you. This crime will not stand, I will do whatever is in my power to assist Tanis in his pledge to you."

What he would add next seemed hollow, "I was nearly killed many weeks ago on only my second day in Sandpoint by the product of fell necromancy. If not for the efforts of one of our companions, I would have expired at the onset of our search for who was behind the goblin attack on the town. The only real clue we have right now leads me to believe that there may be a similar power at play here. I do not condemn your feelings of anger, nor would I condemn it if you felt vengeful... Happened 2 days ago. 3 merchants, coming here from Maginmar were killed in a barn. At the time we thought it a rogue occurance and there was no note like this one. When Zenfira replied, her voice sounded distracted. "...no...it's not about...family..." Her thoughts were elsewhere as she reluctantly followed Lan and Allura.  Thinking back to the recent murder, she looked between Lan and Allura, suddenly very conscious of the vulnerability of the pair in her presence.  If the murderer, was not above murdering townsfolk that she had not known in order to deliver a message, what would he try and do to her companions?  It didn't make sense that the murderer would try to harm them, Zen companions were formidable in their own ways, but that did not stop her imagination from running wild with horrible scenarios.

Zen wrapped her arms around herself, feeling a sudden chill.  She felt vulnerable, walking through the town wearing a simple dress with her only defensive accoutrement being a knife at her waist.  The note.  Why would someone deliver a note to her in such a horrible manner?  What else was this individual capable of?

"I...I need some...to change."  She said.  "I'll...I'll meet you at the stables."  Without saying another word, Zenfira quickly made her way to the tavern where they were all staying.

When they found Lan and heard his suggestion, Talon concurred. "That's what I was thinking as well. These acts are truly heinous. I hope others don't end up spending time in the Asylum as well..." The elf glanced briefly in the direction of Vinders and his daughter. "Let's gather our things and get ready."

"Param, is there some blessing we might obtain from the Temple that would help us if we end up facing something like the suspected ghoul?"

"By the way, where's Zen?"

The Sheriff turns to Lan and answers Grayst Sevilla. When my patrol found him he was babbling crazily. We couldnt get any information that was coherent out of him and turned him over to Erin Habe, who runs a private Sanitorium East of here. I can write a letter of introduction to him for you. Something else of note, a letter similar to what was found on Banny Harker was found on them...same parchment. same handwriting. but this one had nothing to do with any of you. The Three men who were killed were Tarch Mortwell, Lener Hask, and Gedwin Tabe...three swindlers...merchants of ill repute known for the way they bilked money from unsuspecting customers. I have the note at my office. Finally are you sure you dont want to question Thorn before you leave?

If we can identify the author of the note....I'm quite certain just a simple comparison can convince you that Ven did NOT write these notes. Saying he is a suspect, well you had to say something lest it panic the crowd. A suspect is less frightening than 'an unknown' killer." Lan concludes.

Zenfira pauses for a long moment, clutching the note tightly against the tankard pendant that she wore on a long chain around her neck.  As much as she wanted to rush onwards to the tavern, she did not want to be alone.  Not at this moment, not when she was feeling the way that she was. "...I...that would...be fine..." she said.  The note had been left for her, on murdered townsfolk.  People that Tanis was close to.

She glanced over in Tanis' direction but quickly turned and strode swiftly towards the tavern.  What must he think of this?  Those were friends of his and they had been murdered in order to deliver a note to her.  Would he think her responsible?

What had she done to deserve this?

However it is apparent he is very nervous.

The Sherrif pulls Talon to the side and says have a care. Scarnetti is one of the founding families and as such about a quarter of the properties in town are owned by him and since all the other Lumberjacks in the area are out of business he is our source of wood and paper. His arms quite naturally wrapped around her and he knew more than anything she needed comfort. He didn’t say anything at first, unsure what she meant about getting the people killed. And then after a long pause he said, "Zenfira, the ghouls that killed those two would have killed them no matter what. They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Their deaths are not on your head, but now finding their killers is definitely in your heart. I will aid you and the others in that endeavor in whatever ways I am able. Lan shakes his head at the turn of events. Had the killer known about the skimming? If so, then Banny's death could be explained by the fact of the Skinsaw Cult's desire to punish the greedy. If they could but identify one member of the cult... "Gentlemen, shall  we be off? I think I want to examine the site of the other deaths before interviewing the asylum patient. I'm starting to form a hypothesis."

In the books, Lan tries to figure out where the skimming was primarily done (most likely from imports of materials and phony invoices).

With the arrival of the rest of the group, Zenfira released Param and quickly wiped at her eyes.  She could not meet Tanis' gaze.  Just the thought that the children of his friend had been killed to get their attention was still very much a tender spot, and one liable to cause her to break into tears again.  Excusing herself, she went into the Inn to prepare.

She was among the last to arrive at the stables.  A great deal of her preparation had been in prayer to Cayden Cailean, stealing herself for the coming journey and what may lay at their destination.  It was a stoic faced Zenfira who strapped her saddle bags to her horse.

He then went to the stables and readied his magnificent steed. He had grown quite fond of the horse over the past few weeks and had taken to riding much more than he’d expected.

"What did you learn of the other murder?" He asked hoping big someone would catch him up.
