Re: The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
The Sheriff turns to Lan and answers Grayst Sevilla. When my patrol found him he was babbling crazily. We couldnt get any information that was coherent out of him and turned him over to Erin Habe, who runs a private Sanitorium East of here. I can write a letter of introduction to him for you. Something else of note, a letter similar to what was found on Banny Harker was found on them...same parchment. same handwriting. but this one had nothing to do with any of you. The Three men who were killed were Tarch Mortwell, Lener Hask, and Gedwin Tabe...three swindlers...merchants of ill repute known for the way they bilked money from unsuspecting customers. I have the note at my office. Finally are you sure you dont want to question Thorn before you leave?

"Aye, we'll speak to Thorn. And I want to see that note. May I bring it along? I want to compare the writing style with Zenfira's note and others. If we can identify the author of the note....I'm quite certain just a simple comparison can convince you that Ven did NOT write these notes. Saying he is a suspect, well you had to say something lest it panic the crowd. A suspect is less frightening than 'an unknown' killer." Lan concludes.

Re: The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
taking Lan, Allura, Tanis and Talon to his office he shows them the note first...

in very scribbled writing...in the common tongue. Blood stains on the note.

it says.

Messrs. Mortwell, Hask and Tabe-
A Deal has come about that I need capitol For. It invloves property and gold, and though I am not at liberty to tell you the exact details, it will make us all Rich. Come to Bradley's Barn, on Cougar Creek tonight. We can meet there to discuss our Futures.

"I assume the merchants worked the area around Magnimar primarily? Good thing we have a noble contact in the area who might give us some insights as to how many nobles in the area might be called 'Your Lordship'. All right, time to speak with Thorn." Lan turns to Thorn and waits for comments from the others.

Lan shrugs. "Agreed, but I'd still like to question him. Tell me Thorn, was anything unusual happening before you discovered the bodies? Any folks out of place at the Mill?"

Talon was glad to see Param offering to go after Zenfira, wherever she was. There had been something off about her recently, but the elf had been so caught up in himself and his studies that he'd procrastinated asking her what was going on. The tragedy tonight was probably making things worse for her, Talon guessed. He followed the others to question Thorn.

it wasnt unusual fir Banny and Katrina to stay overnight in the mill. Banny lived on.the premises. he handled the business affairs for the Scarnetti's. when i came on duty in the morning ...I found them like that. Checked to see if they were alive. Then came up here.

"So anyone who bothered to do a little research would be aware that Benny stayed there and that he and Katrina would be alone. I wonder if the local prelate can pray to speak to the dead? Perhaps Katrina's spirit still lingers and we can bring it justice." He hadn't thought Thorn could contribute much, but it didn't hurt to ask.

Param Tullo:
Param can see the look of concern on Zenís face, well more in her spirit than on her face, but either way as she asks to part ways he says, "I have a few things at the tavern I would like to gather before we ride out, not the least of which is my armor. Will you allow me to accompany you Zenfira?"

Zenfira pauses for a long moment, clutching the note tightly against the tankard pendant that she wore on a long chain around her neck.  As much as she wanted to rush onwards to the tavern, she did not want to be alone.  Not at this moment, not when she was feeling the way that she was. "...I...that would...be fine..." she said.  The note had been left for her, on murdered townsfolk.  People that Tanis was close to.

She glanced over in Tanis' direction but quickly turned and strode swiftly towards the tavern.  What must he think of this?  Those were friends of his and they had been murdered in order to deliver a note to her.  Would he think her responsible?

What had she done to deserve this?

Re: The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
"Tell us about how the mill works. Does the mill close up at night are things locked up, or are there men working through the night?" Talon asked as he ran a hand through his silvery hair, wiping away a cold film of sweat as the images of what he's seen flashed again through his mind.

"Can we get you anything for your wrists?" he asked, noticing Thorn was rubbing them.

Re: The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
At times the men worked through the night but not often usually a few hours after dark Banny would send them home then go upstairs for his bookkeeping. I'd hang around to do some clean up and maintenance for a bit then get on home.

Banny looked at his wrists and Talon notices that the ropes had been tied loosely and there's really no marks...must be nerves

Talon looked over to Lan. "I stepped out with Tanis, did anyone take a look at the books?"

"Sheriff?"

"Maybe..." Talon mused. "Do we know anything of the Scarnetti holdings in Maginmar?"

Re: The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
Noticing Thorn's nervous gesture, Lan says "didn't know Benny was the bookkeeper. Oh, excuse me" Lan stumbles as he approaches Thorn. He falls against the man and as he extracts himself his fingers surreptitiously searches the man for deeply-hidden wads. It just occurred to Lan that Thorn might have been bribed to look another direction, so Lan's fingers search for the reason for Thorn's nervousness.

Re: The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
Lan, on the sly, checks Thorn out and finds nothing on his person that would raise eyebrows.

However it is apparent he is very nervous.

The Sherrif pulls Talon to the side and says have a care. Scarnetti is one of the founding families and as such about a quarter of the properties in town are owned by him and since all the other Lumberjacks in the area are out of business he is our source of wood and paper. He's a powerful man Talon.

"Sometimes power is wielded as a shield... but thank you for that Sheriff, I'll keep that in mind."

Turning back to the man they were questioning, Talon probed further. "You look nervous, you're not in trouble, it's just... this may only be the beginning of something very terrible. If there's anything else you can tell us, please, don't hold it back because you're scared. Are you sure you didn't notice anything else that was strange or out of place? Did you notice any doors or windows open? That sort of thing?"

In reply to Zenfira Cazal (msg # 106):

Param could tell that Zenfira was upset so he walked beside her quietly as they ventured toward the Inn. "Zen, you seem really bothered. I know that was a disturbing scene, but was there something specific that has bothered you?" He asked as they neared the inn finally breaking the silence.

Zenfira stopped in her rush to get to the Inn.She looked over at Param, unsure if she should say anything.  What could she say?  It was almost impossible to put words to the torrent of emotions and anxious thoughts that were permeating her soul at this time.

"...I..."  she stammered.  Tears started to glisten in her eyes as what little composure that she had slowly eroded.  In a sudden burst of movement, Zen threw her arms around Param, sobbing.  She buried her face into his chest.  "...I got those two killed!"

In reply to Talon (msg # 112):

Lan notes "You're right, Talon. He is nervous. Perhaps some Elven Magic will verify this Lan proclaims. Speaking nonsensical terms mixed with Arcane syllables in Elvish, Lan jettisons a blue-flame firework into his left hand from his sleeve hold-out. As the flame billows the blue flame, he proclaims "See? He IS holding something back! Come on, Thorn. Out with it!"

Re: The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
In reply to Zenfira Cazal (msg # 114):

Param had been disturbed by the scene but was practical about the nature of the deaths and their cause. To say he was shocked by Zenfiraís response would be to put it mildly and though heíd thought about what it might be like to hold her in an embrace, he hadnít quite imagined this scenario.

His arms quite naturally wrapped around her and he knew more than anything she needed comfort. He didnít say anything at first, unsure what she meant about getting the people killed. And then after a long pause he said, "Zenfira, the ghouls that killed those two would have killed them no matter what. They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Their deaths are not on your head, but now finding their killers is definitely in your heart. I will aid you and the others in that endeavor in whatever ways I am able. Perhaps Sarenrae will bless me with some insight..."

Ibor started stammering and stuttering and sweat dripped down his forehead. Then he burst out look it was Banny not me. he's been skimming from Scarnetti for months now. Ever since he started on with Katrina. Said he wanted to take away maybe to Maginmar or Korvosa. When I found out he started giving me extra time off with pay ...cut my duties a little. Scarnetti finds out in done for. Please

Re: The Skinsaw Murders: Murder Most Foul
Talon blinked, surprised that Lan's shenanigans actually cracked the shell which Thorn had raised to protect himself. This revelation was very compelling. It made Thorn a suspect.

"Thank you for telling us this. I can understand why you would want to hide your involvement in shady dealings... but now you might also be a target if whomever did this - assuming it wasn't you - finds out that you were in your own way complicit."

"The question now becomes this: who else knew about the skimming?"
