Lessons from the Past lead to Hidden Depths

In reply to Revan Kun (msg # 12):

A Duros in a blue flight suit is finishing business with a group of Chadra-Fan mechanics as you walk into the hanger.  They squeak noisily counting their credits as they leave.

A ZH-25 Questor light freighter sits in the middle of the hanger.

Greetings new travel companions.  I'm Captain Stazi and departure is imminent.  Please board and prepare yourselves.

The freighter merges smoothly with the rest of the traffic bound for orbit.  It only takes Stazi a few minutes to set the coordinates for the jump to Phemis.

The ship returns to sublight travel and the red rocky planet springs to view.

I have the appropriate mining clearance to enter the atmosphere  Stazi assures you as he busily flicks switches around the cockpit.

The canyon Ashur promised is visible without the aid of sensors, a narrow scar snaking across the planets surface.  However, before you can begin planning your approach, the sensors chime a warning -- several probe droids seem to be hovering along the canyon's length.  You can detect them because they are running constant, active sensor sweeps.  Trying to get past the droids may take some fancy flying, or you can settle for a landing spot away from the canyon and hike in.

well captain stazi They say you're a top notch pilot, one of the best around so why don't we put that to the test and see if you can get past those droids and little closer to where we need to be

Rolling a Presence check to look for a landing sight

Dice Roll:

3 successes, 1 threat on a roll of 1 Ability, 2 Proficiency, 2 Difficulty

I turn to the nav computer and pull up the ground scan.

There - that looks like a good approach.

Lessons from the Past lead to Hidden Depths

In reply to Mata Hari (msg # 15):

Leigh -  suffer 1 strain from the Threat rolled - mental strain I suppose

The southern end of the canyon opens up into a vast, jumbled valley of jagged rock spires that would provide possible cover from the probe droids for long enough to touch down.

Yes, I agree Stazi says
Strap in.

You are pushed back into your seat as the throttles are opened to max and the nose dives towards the ground.  The engines roar as the red surface streaks past - the freighter rolls through giant rock columns.

Do not worry.  The stock Questor is not nimble.  My Questor is not stock.

  • Traveling at max speed of 3 = 3 difficulty dice
  • Ship silhouette of 4 = 2 upgraded difficulty dice
  • Rough terrain = 1 setback die
  • Skilled Jockey talent = -2 setback dice
  • Pilot skill and agility = 3 proficiency and 1 Ability

Dice Roll:

1 success on a roll of 1 Ability, 3 Proficiency, 1 Difficulty, 2 Challenge

Stazi proves his worth and lands his ship among the rock formations without a scratch.

I must insist on comm silence due to the Imp probe droids.  Return here when you are finished with the caves.

You must now climb up the jagged rock spills that issue out of the canyons mouth to make it into the canyon proper.  Make an Average(2) Athletics check with 1(black) setback.  Athletics is a Brawn skill.  So you take the higher of the two values to determine how many Ability dice are added to the skill check dice pool.  Then you upgrade (turn green to yellow) a number of those Ability dice equal to the lower of the two values.

Leigh has an Athletics of 0 and Brawn of 2  -  2 Ability(green) with 0 upgrades
Shaun has an Athletics of 2 and Brawn of 3 - 3 Ability(green) with 2 of them upgraded to Yellow.

Shaun should roll first as he has the greatest chance for success and 3 Advantage can be used to help leigh with her dice roll.

Shauns dice pool is:
  • 2 purple
  • 1 black
  • 2 yellow
  • 1 green

Don't forget that you still have 1 light side Destiny point you can flip.
Flipping a destiny point allows you to upgrade 1 die in the pool or it can be used for "luck" which would allow you to introduce something in your favor to the narrative.

Revan makes it into the canyon only slightly struggling through one particularly difficult section.
Suffer 1 strain from the threat rolled

Mata is unable to make it through the difficult section and slides back to the base of the slide.
Suffer 3 strain from the slide and threat rolled

After collecting herself for a minute she scans for a different route up and starts her climb.

Mata fails on her second attempt when the loose rock underfoot gives way and sends her sliding down to the bottom.  But she sees what seems like a climbable path.

Use one advantage to cancel one strain.  So suffer 1.  The second advantage can be used to cancel the setback die on your next attempt

One more strain for Mata

The tall rock spires casting long shadows at this end of the canyon start to thin out as you travel deeper.  Large boulders litter the ground.  You notice that some of these boulders have been severely battered.  Some have even been cracked into pieces. A short distance ahead you see three cave entrances on the left side of the canyon.

Each make an Average (2 purple) Knowledge Xenology check.  But I'm going to spend both dark destiny points to upgrade 1 purple die to a Red for each of you.

Fail.  Epic fail.
Mata spins in a circle and shrugs.

I'm used to sneaking around imperial bases not alien canyons.  Looks like a bunch of rocks to me.  Too bad we don't have a Seeker with us.  They love leading people through the wilderness

I know its been a while.  Revan does not have a Xenology skill and a 2 in Intelligence so your roll would be 2 green - 1 purple - and 1 red

This is the link we have been using to roll and copy the html for the results: http://rpg-dice-roller.herokuapp.com/star_wars/roll

Revan scans the cavern and notices a pattern among the battered boulders.  They seem to section off parts of the area.  Following the lines from one scarred rock to the next you see piles of gnawed bones.

Mata looks at Revan with apprehension in her eyes.

It looks like something is telling us to keep out - which we can't do if we are going to get into those caves you came for.  How do you want to proceed?

Revan and Mata cautiously walk towards the entrance to the caves.  The canyon is quiet but the walls amplify and echo the sounds of pebbles ticking down from above.  Mata's eyes dart to every sound.

Almost as soon as you cross past the first smashed boulder you hear a low growl from above.  Cresting the canyon ridge is a huge four legged creature nearly 4 meters tall.  Its blocky legs stamp the ground as it looks down at you. A thick ridge of bone curves forward past the flattened face of the beast and horns curl around the sides of its head.  With a great howl it charges down at you both.

You are currently at medium range which is a few dozen meters and towards the edge of the reliable range of a pistol

Because you were approaching cautiously and the Canyon Charger wasn't ambushing you can roll Initiative with your Cool skill. 2 green

The canyon charger rolls:

Revan is the only on that rolled a success.

Order will be Revan - Canyon Charger - Mata

Revan is at medium range which is 2 purple difficulty.
Subtract 1 purple difficulty for the giant size of the Canyon Charger.
Your Ranged Light Skill is 0 and your agility is 3 so 3 green.
Using your maneuver to aim provides 1 blue Boost but you are aiming at a specific part (eye) so that would be 2 black Setback.  I leave that up to you to decide.

1 difficulty
3 ability
either 1 blue or 2 black.
