Yes, it's after dark; but not total dark. There is ambient light, and the church keeps the grounds clear of debris. The sentries will get a penalty to notice you, but not an auto-fail.

Anton Mescher, Commander of the Riddleport Grendarmes, Warden of Superdome Prison, and Provost LeCrox's right-hand, has asked that Graham "deal" with the Church of Unity in NOLA Proper, because they oppose and disrupt his drug trade. The reason Graham and Harlon went to Superdome Prison to talk to Mescher was to secure a contract for condemned men to fight in Saul's Octahedron arena. However, Saul also told them that Clegg Zincher, the proprietor of Zincher Arena, holds the only contract with Mescher for men. Removing that contract from Zincher will not only align the Gold Mine against Zincher Arena, but will solidify the Gold Mine as Riddleport's premier entertainment venue.

I was hoping that it would have been a mini reactor powering the church. like most things would have had before the bombs fell. It being a LP generator fucked up my whole plan. I was planning to use to out the reactor into a critical state and bypass the 200 year old safeties had have it detonate a mini nuke. Making it seem like a malfunction instead of sabotages, taking the church with it. I didn't know what was in the shack until I got through the door.
