Matteus' Draw, 27 April 1945
The Church of St. Michael in Kreuzberg had been serving as a field hospital for Dr. Gro▀fahne for some time now. Every day new casualties were brought in, most of them volkssturm like himself. Though the space was airy and clean, and little harassed by artillery, it was not equipped as a hospital should be, and the priest who might provide succor to the wounded, had fled long ago. Thus it was up to Mattheus to keep it running, and that meant scavenging for supplies. Even as the Reich collapsed around him he nevertheless managed to keep his own corner of it functional, in a sense.

Today he was heading toward the lines of battle. He'd heard a school near Treptower Park had recently served as a hospital, and been abandoned in haste as the Soviets advanced. He could hear the boom of all sorts of bombs, shells, cannons- it all faded into a continuous white noise.

Entering the school, he finds its hallways filled with filing cabinets. It seems it also served as some sort of records storage too, at some point. As he nears the gymnasium, the site of the hospital, he notices one of the open cabinets has a relatively slim file labeled "Gro▀fahne, R." Could this be Matteus' brother Ruprecht?

Mattheus' Draw, 27 April 1945
Matteus takes a short draw on his cigarette and, with a twinge of guilt for his patients back at the church, removes the folder from the drawer and begins methodically scanning the pages for any clue as to his brother's whereabouts or activities.

The file contains only half-a-dozen pages, but the first sheet is written in Ruprecht's hand. Quickly scanning the page Mattheus can deduce his brother was reporting to a superior on Projekt Humboldt. Before the good doctor can read further, however, he hears the shuffle of footsteps from elsewhere in the halls. Someone is coming around the corner.

Matteus quickly puts the file away in his satchel, puts his cigarette out, and ducks behind one of the cabinets, keeping an eye out for the approaching footfalls. His hand strays to his Luger, though he doesn't draw it yet.

Mattheus' Draw, 27 April 1945
Around the corner steps an older gentleman, another volkssturm like Matteus himself. The man limply carries an MP-40, and as he rounds the corner he looks around, and calls, "Hello? I know someone is here." He lifts the SMG nervously.

Matteus slowly moves out into the open. "Hallo," he says, with some degree of relief. "Sorry, I thought you might be a Red." He pulls out another cigarette and lights it, but doesn't speak any more unless the man speaks to him.

The man lowers his weapon, and gives Matteus a closed-mouth smile. He wears his threadbare clothes like a coathanger, all skin and bones. "You shouldn't be hear without a real weapon, you know. Ivan is close." Adding emphasis to his point, a mortar strikes the building, causing dust to fall from the ceiling. They both hit the deck, but luckily it seems to have been an isolated case. Too much propellant, maybe. As he rises to his feet, the man asks, looking at him quizzically, "What have you got there?" He points to the file, which is now sticking partly out of his satchel.

Briefly confused, Matteus looks around to see what the man's pointing at. "Oh--I'm a sani. Medical supplies and files. I was looking to see if there was anything left behind here that we could use at the hospital at St. Michael's."

The older man's eyes linger on Matteus' face for a few moments, then linger over to the filing cabinet, the drawer still open, and back down to the file folder itself. As he does, Matteus stuffs it back into his bag, trying (and failing) to do it covertly. He takes a tense second to contemplate his next words, and finally says, 'Good luck to you in that.' His eyes lock with Matteus', and the corners crinkle in an understanding smile. 'You should move quickly if you want to get those supplies.'

With that, he turns and begins walking away.

Matteus takes a long draw on his cigarette, stands up, and realizes that the old man is right. He's secured the file, he can look at it at his leisure. He stuffs the folder into the satchel, firmly this time, and begins looking around for the medical supplies that he came for.

Matteus' Draw, 27 April 1945
Matteus has little trouble finding supplies. The roof of the gymnasium has a new hole blasted through it, and so it is relatively brightly lit. There are some bandages and gauze, as well as some splints and even an ampoule of morphine.

Back at the kirche Matteus leafs through the file. The writing is generally vague, and the reporting mundane. Ruprecht's characteristic curtness, to the point of being rude, shows through. "Two new candidates arrived today." "Candidate 9831 performed well." "Janitorial hygiene inadequate." Things of this nature. They are dated 30 December 1944-17 January 1945. It does not tell Matteus much else, and Matteus' superior is only identified by a serial number: 8783-01

Matteus notes as well that his brother goes by his own serial number, 4110-21

Two years later......

Matteus, working in his own practice again, where he takes barter as payment, is approached by the older man that he had seen before, now in a police councillor's uniform. A bit better fed, and better clothed. The man tells him that the SDP has taken an interest in him. He knows of an organization that can help undo some of the hurt Germany continues to feel, and may be able to help him find his brother.
