He he...

My character has an interesting history which GM and me are working out.

You just picked the wrong person to sit next to and the wrong reactions.

All will become clear in time I am sure.
Just remember this is the roman empire.  Not the safest place to be born into.

Just think how your character would react and go with it...

(One player note- that got be one best opening lines between player I ever done).

I need to know how much I am being paid to have the information required to react the way my character would. Also, you really like to press the enter key it seems.

Legionaries received 225 denarii a year.

However I think we get less and half would be in items not money.
So I would say the average solider would get 12 denarii month pay.
The roman's like there structures.

Again this up to GM.

Sorry for the slow down.  My Mom just passed away yesterday.  I had to run to Florida.  This next week will be rather chaotic.

As to pay, auxiliary got paid less than legionnaires.  180 dennarii a year (if I remember right).  And that is gross pay.  Food and uniform were deducted from that.  That brought the net to something like 100/year.

Sorry about your mum.

I lost my father a few years back.
I was very close to him.  We friends as well as father and son.

I ended up sorting everything out as I was only one willing and capable of such things.

So I understand how complicated this can be.

Good question.  Since everyone will post at different times of day, you post your intended actions.  If you think you might be preempted in your actions, you can include an "else" statement. I then combine the actions by intiative.  Include die rolls for attacks in either a private line or in an occ block.  I will change you to an "A".  :)

Do we at least get to know the order of execution?

In this instance, my move depends entirely upon if someone is in the spot I'd like to move to to shoot the german guy that's up front, or if someone rushes ahead into melee range and whatever else, or if someone comes between he and I to provide him soft cover (+4 AC). If I know I am acting first, no problem. If I know I am not, then I need to wait and see what other positions people take.

I understand the apparent convenience of "everyone post and we'll figure it out", but it is often extremely punishing to the players at worst, and at best leads to some ambiguity and actions being interpreted, perhaps inaccurately.

I can appreciate that.  And it makes sense.  Here is what we have so far:

Mintho = 20
Marcellus = 17
Quintus = 16
Malco = 14
Placidus = 10
Sergius = 10
Potitus = 9
Khnum = 7
Kittos = 3

I did not bring the German scores with me but there was a 20 and a 19 in the bunch.  This should at least help with your decision making.  In the case of a tie, the PC acts before the NPC.  Or the PC's who tie act simultaneously.

Not to break up the action or anything, but I don't have a clear idea of what Malco is wanting nor where he currently is. If something is about to happen here that requires initiative, I'd like a map if possible. If we're just going to role-play it out, then just a few more lines of detail would be appreciated.

I answered the question later on.  "OOC:  I noticed that I did not answer Mintho's questions earlier.  You could spend a turn getting to one of the trees and be up it by the end of next turn.  You could try to climb the palisade but it would be difficult and you would have to roll a 15 or better against your climb skill.  It would also take a full turn to climb it."

And do I get to know if any attacks have already dropped/downed one of the germans? I ask because if I post attacking a german that's already been knocked unconscious or killed, then that's kind of a wasted turn, which I'd like to avoid.

The reasoning behind having everyone post their actions then resolving the actions in summary is to speed along play.  If you shoot at a german that is already dead, I will move your aim to the next likely candidate or ask you for a change before posting the summary to prevent a wasted turn.

Something worries me. These dudes, or possibly just the leader, just made the decision to confront more than double their numbers.

Situation 1: They were either tactical fucking idiots or fueled by suicidal beliefs.

Situation 2: All, or just the leader, had visual or other sensory impairments, and they didn't notice we outnumbered them by so much.

Situation 3: There's a lot more Germans fairly nearby.

I would only ask all of you to keep the possibility of #3 in your minds as we progress forward after this combat.

I have been on this web site for well over 10 years now.

In that time I only really had one game that run with 4 players and gm almost all the time.  We almost 5th but it is dragon age rp so exp and level is lot slower.

I have one game I went join only to find it close down and reopened.
Got my old character back after 2 years.

A third game where we have 3 players.  I have total of 343 posts.  My closes rival has 82 posts.  As you notice I not massive OOC posters so most post in game.
That because I was starting character and other came along.

I am part of another game which has Multi- GM.  Even then both my characters have had 2 years rest times without GM.

It really come down to have GM that willing to carry on come what may.
With one or two players that will not give up and die.

Then just keep adding players as go along.

The "team" thus far consists of now three player characters (thank you Sergius) and an NPC.
The NPC does not speak latin and only one party member speaks his.  The NPC is a druid.  The rest of the party is basically fighter types.

I have two new players (Milio and Shem) that I am working out their story lines to get them with the group.  I have an idea.

so what kind of Human languages are there?  Latin I already know of, but is it classified as the common language or is something else?

Then there are the languages of other peoples of Europe eg: Brython (primitive English), Celtic, Norwegian, Castilian, Prussian or Russian then there are languages from countries close by like Nubian of some sort & Nipponese.  I am hoping that your going to make it easy and have a single Human language but... where is the fun of that?

Am willing to be an interpreter of sorts, if players want to let me know what language they use as their native tongue.  DM permitting.

There are the languages that existed during the Roman empire.  Latin is basically common.  For barbarian people groups (wilder german tribes and farther north) they would have little exposure to Latin and thus need interpreters like our poor Oleg.  Non-human races have a racial language as well but most folks in the game will have some Latin.  Greek is very common as well and may be more common in the eastern reaches of the empire than latin.

At this point, the party really does not need an interpreter.  That I can think of.

There is a rule that I have in the getting started section that no one has utilized yet - Action Points.  At first level, you each have 2 action points.  You can use them to reroll bad rolls or for any number of things.

Action Points
As characters develop, they will have the opportunity to earn action points.  Action points are non-renewable resources.  At each point a character advances to a new level, they will receive action points that they can use when attempting to improve their attempts at a particular task.

How they work:
Lets say Decurion Quintus Maris has 4 action points.  He wants to attack the lumbering Hill Giant that is shambling towards him.  He declares that he will use an action point to hit the creature.  He would roll in the dice roller his normal to hit roll but put in the comments that he is using an action point.  Then roll an additional 1d6.  The sum of the two rolls becomes the to hit roll.  The same would be true to extend damage inflicted by a hit.  The use must be declared prior to rolling (in the description in the die roller).  Also when posting your die results, copy this to the post as well in the PM with the normal die rolls.

Once a character has used all of their action points, they are gone.  They are only renewed when a character gains a new level and only at the DM's discretion.  They are rewards for good roleplay and for frequent posting.

But then it was not just one knife now was it Sergius.  You pretty much took every decent or potentially magical item listed.  Nor did you ask if anyone wanted anything you took before you took it.   So yes both Shem and Milio are out... In any case, neither Shem or Milio spell team as I.

If you had read his post you would see that Sergius was going to look at them in better light. This was in part so we could move forward as things were dragging. There is no magic hold all for group treasure and it looks like stuff has gone missing in the past as no one has put their hand up to carry them.

Also it was Sergius who found them in the first place so of course they are in his possession other then showing the German he had literately just taken them off the bodies. At no point did Sergius post he was keeping the items or calming them permanently. Had shem asked IC for the knife, well things would have probably worked out different, now not so much. Bye.

I have no interest in knife for my self (player or character).

However agreeing between player is normal for rp games.

However this is based in Roman world which not know for people to share.

On the other hand Placidus experience with Sham not a good one.
I really did stay my hand from shooting him in last battle.

A bit of give an take needs to be agree between players.

Well I am trying to get the game moving again now that I have two more NPCs.  I just went to make some listen checks and found that when Shem/Milo left, he deleted the character sheets associated with his characters.  Now I have to see if I have a copy of them anywhere.  That was not very kind of him.

If Shem is the person I think he was then I am not surprised.

He not very good at being a team player.  He out for what he can get for his characters.

He also not very mindful of other players/characters.

I am not sorry to see him go.

Anyway thank you for sticking with the game and not giving up.
Players like that can make GM feel it's not worth the time to do the job as GM.

So Thanks you for your hard work...

Thanks.  Anyway, Milo is an elf Ranger and Shem was a human thief.  Both are useful characters so I will NPC them.  Until we can find a player to take them over.

I am struggling to figure out what they had due to the character sheet deletion.

Would anyone be upset with me if I just posted my list of what I know was on each of the monsters from the last encounter.  PM me if you want to keep it secret.

The items that Shem had were a magical map that is linked to Placidus.  It enables anyone who has it to be able to find him.  (it was a cheap way to make sure he found the group.)  Also a scroll of orders informing the group that the main road to the Limes has been cut and to use extreme caution in returning.

You could try PM's to find the character sheets when he entered the game. If you want I am happy to take over a character if it frees up your time.

That would be very helpful.  Which one would you be interested in?

I went through the PMs.  Did not help.  All of the updates were done in the character sheet.  I just have blank forms I sent out.

Holy mother, what just happended?

Bah, I don't get it. I think its part of the rp to figure things out ourselves. Totaly unnecessary to delete the characters.

Probably one of the fighter types, sort of a point and shot thing. Though if you have another in mind I am very open to playing what ever fits.
