Re: The Amazing Avengers #2: "...The Twilight's Final Gleaming"
The heroes and the woman brace instinctively against the furious torrent of energy inches from obliterating them entirely. The lady closes her eyes tight, saying a short prayer in Iron Fist's ear. Her whispers stretch across an instant, to a moment, to long seconds. There is no impact, only the noise of explosions rising above the ones constantly present since the Doombots arrived in the area. The sound, though nearly deafening, is preferable to the fate of being targeted by the robots. Cautiously, she opens her eyes, as slowly as possible, and looks up. "Wha -- ?" she mutters.
By the time she can process what is happening, the force blasts which were a mortal threat a short time again have nearly dissipated, hanging in the air. From what she can tell, even though it makes no sense, the blasts were suspended mid-air, short feet from the trio in the intersection, leaving no effect and now fading into the air. The Doombots react by freezing, looking around, searching for an answer to why their attack did not connect. Shortly, the answer is clear.
Invisible Woman stands amidst the destruction, hand outstretched, looking sternly at the two heroes and their female companion. She stands still, eyes focused. Her action seems to have no effect but only because it is not visible. Spots of residual force energy dissolve in the air above them, indicating a barrier that has been created around the three people. Though it is not visible, it is more than enough to protect those under it.
The Doombots change their focus to the Fantastic Four heroine, and pause, as if awaiting an order. Just then, another unit of robots comes behind them, blasting away at the street and heroes below as if the past moments and their compatriots' attack had not occurred. The destruction continues, energy blasts glancing off the shield around Daredevil, Iron Fist, and the woman, as well as that which the Invisible Woman has created around herself, but it still affects the street. The asphalt buckles as if it were the sea, sending shockwaves from the force brought down on it, and only the most hardy or agile are able to stay standing. This number does not include Sue Storm, who loses her footing as the ground below her bursts, sending her away and to the other side of a truck-sized piece of blacktop. She does not emerge from it.
The air around the two heroes and woman clears suddenly, slightly cleaner from the smoke and metal smell that has been at their level, both collections of air similar and now mingling after being separated. Daredevil senses it first: The invisible barrier is gone.
