Re: The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

Turning to Taskmaster: "Clearly, you have an out. This place is about to explode, and you haven't got a care in the world."

"Also...you need a shower. I mean, seriously, why would you keep using Hai Karate? Are you a hipster? You do things ironically now? It's horrible, cheap aftershave, so...ooooooo...you've just GOT to use it. Nice."

Once again, Tony's too focused on his chosen path. He's so intent on trying to live up to Cap's example, argue with Barney, entertain himself, and save one group of Hydra goons, that he doesn't see the others in time to take evasive action or even just go up a few feet, out of their grasp.

Reaction to Hydra Soldier Army B 12d8 Mob (msg 339):

Illuminating Blast d8, Team d8, Mass of Panicking Hydra Soldiers d8, Superhuman Strength d10, Business Master d10

21:35, Today: Iron Man rolled 4,1,1,2,1 using d8,d8,d8,d10,d10 with rolls of 4,1,1,2,1. Reaction to Hydra Soldier Army B.

3 opportunities for El Watcher (+1 PP)

Roll: 4, Effect: d10

Complication Succeeds. Extraordinary success. The complication steps up from a d10 to a d12.

As the mob drags him down, Tony doesn't give up on his verbal assault: "Guys, this is a big mistake...We can save you, but you've got to help us take down Taskmaster! Look, now there's 30 of us. He's no match for us."

Iron Man gets Dragged Down d12 Complication

One Hydra agent grabbing Iron Man's ankle on its own would not be enough to take him down, but when one is followed by another, then another on the other foot, and they lower him just enough that the rest of the group can grab him as well, it's not long before the hero is pulled beneath the mass of them. His words are lost as he goes under the bodies of the agents, all grabbing at him like he will offer relief. That pile grows to include not just those who grabbed at him, or dragged him down, but the hundreds of other Hydra soldiers desperate for escape. Even more debris falls from the ceiling, crashing to the floor and crushing Hydra agents, yet the building does not disintegrate enough that any means of escape are revealed.

"Why should I be worried?" Taskmaster calls down to the pile of bodies that Iron Man is now nearly under. "The Avengers are gonna save us... right?"

The Black Panther digs into the flesh of the inert blob, even as the computer banks around him find more material the explode and the fires lap dangerously close to him. Just when he reaches the blond, buried man and uncovers his face enough that the man can heave a dazed breath, the blob comes to life once again and, like an enormous tsunami, rises above the Wakandan prince to come down and bury him in itself as well!

Re: The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

Iron Man, somehow, is able to come to the surface once again: "No, Tasky...The Avengers aren't going to save you." The weight of the mass of panicking Hydra Soldiers pushes him down again, but Iron Man keeps getting back up. "You, sir, get to go to prison. But the ones that asked for our help...The Avengers will certainly save them. It's called doing the right thing."

Iron Man is able to momentarily stand, members of the second mass of panicking Hydra Soldiers still holding on to his feet and legs. Struggling against the grabs and pulls of the soldiers, he tries one more time to rally them to action.

"You guys that want my help...want me to save you...want me to be a hero. Be my...heroes. Help me save you. I'm not a very heroic guy...but I try to be. I fail all the time...but I keep trying. I'm lucky. I've got a high IQ and tons of money. So I make suits. I make suits to cover up the fact that I'm just a man...a weak, fallible man. I make suits in the hope that my tech can make a difference. Now, you...you all make a choice. Make a difference. Turn away from Hydra, and let's work together to get out of here. Show Taskmaster that he's the one that needs saving."

Even with his armor's voice enhancement, Iron Man's words are lost in the noise and pandemonium. The ocean of soldiers under and over him continue as if he said nothing at all. Now that they've dragged him down to immobility, they only scurry in circles, looking in all directions for some way out of here or any scrap of hope and, failing either of those, beat each other since violence is all they have been trained to do. By now many of those bodies are bloodied and lifeless but there are plenty more to replace them in the mass of confusion.

"What?" Taskmaster calls from atop the platform, his voice carrying because of the height over the throng. "Can't hear you! Kinda noisy in here! Not really the place for speechifyin'", he hollers, as another chunk of debris falls and crushes at least three Hydra minions. Slowly and carefully but not showing any particular effort, Taskmaster takes an arrow from his quiver and nocks it to his bow. "I thought I heard you say something about doing 'the right thing,' but that doesn't count when you leave people to die." More debris, more bodies crushed. He raises the bow carefully, to aim at Iron Man. The only trick to the arrow is that there is no trick, besides being the sharpest, strongest, deadliest arrow there is available in existence. To anyone who knows Hawkeye and would notice, Taskmaster's aiming stance is exactly the same as the hero's. "That was funnier than your Barney Toastmaster gag. Which wasn't funny at all. But if you want to keep it going, then I'm your master because you're toast!" The eye slots in Iron Man's armored mask might be covered now but the Taskmaster knows the weakest parts of his suit. The villain aims for only a moment, as if he's not bothering to aim at all, yet when he lets the arrow go it shoots exactly toward its mark.

The suit's targeting system locks on to the arrow, and Tony fires a hurried shot from the repulsors in a muscle-memory reaction born of self-defense. The repulsor blast connects, and the arrow breaks apart a few feet from its target.

His hands still up in a defensive position, Tony can't help but take a shot at Taskmaster: "Well, that was close...and, yet...not quite close enough." Lowering his hands, the Billionaire Playboy in the Formerly-Golden Suit continues to run off at the mouth: "Hey, I could make a better bow for you...or maybe a better targeting system...you know, after you rehabilitate and are released from The Raft in...like...200 years. You know, that was a nice impersonation of Clint. The difference, of course, is that Clint would make the shot."

Taskmaster lowers his bow and shrugs. “Oh, well,” he says, his voice loud enough in a relative calm just before the storm. “You’re gonna die anyway!” He pauses for just a moment to survey the scene then throws back his head in an explosive guffaw. “HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA--” his laughter cut off as the chunk of debris bigger than an automobile falls from above, crushing the platform like it was paper and flattening the soldiers on the floor under it.

Re: The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

Capt. Marvel’s blast extinguishes when the entire observation room detaches from its place in the structure and, in an avalanche of masses of metal and computer components and fire, crash to the floor, not sparing the hapless Hydra souls who happened to be beneath it.  The clamor of destruction is the only noise that could rise above the extreme disarray in the rest of the facility, amounting to a bludgeoning force of deafening sound.  Sections of the suite of rooms on the second floor go with it, but it's only another component of the oncoming obliteration of the facility.

With a yawning crash, the roof starts to finally collapses, affording the possibility of a hope of escape but only for a second until the rumbling beneath the floor finally surges upward, buckling the group to a wide half-circle then erupting forth from the explosion originating below the facility.  All of the matter below is violently thrust upward just as the ceiling falls inward, the explosion kept within the place when the walls and ceiling do not give way.  Everything inside is blended mashed violently at once leaving nothing left standing or intact, followed immediately by an implosion when the roof and walls collapse, crushing everything from the top down.  Only then does the ceiling finally collapse, leveling what was once the structure, and leaving everything that was in it it buried beneath the tons of rubble. The contents of the rest of the place are crushed completely beneath the weight of the collapsing roof.  By the time there are any rifts in the structure to allow escape, the tonnage has already borne down and the building is flattened into a horrible mess of metal and debris and deadening fires.  There is nothing from the interior that is saved.  It was all caught within, everything that was in the facility crushed beneath and within.

Those outside didn’t hear the ear-shattering pop before the concussive force from inside upended the ground beneath their feet and knocked them about.  Even the powerhouses She-Hulk and Wonder-Man are forced sideways.  The crowd of media and onlookers were only jostled about by the force, a few thrown off their feet, luckily at some distance so they were not badly harmed.  The ground in the alleyway and leading to the fish market are completely disrupted, the asphalt left in crumbles and large holes uncovered leading to sewers and contents under the city.

The building is flattened, only tons upon tons of smoldering debris sitting atop what once was.  There are no survivors who rise from the wreckage.

END OF ACTION SCENE

(We'll have a dramatic pause here. Later I'll post what happens next and we'll have the aftermath.)

Re: The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

The wreckage of the warehouse smolders and some embers still blaze and smoke rises but otherwise nothing moves and there is only silence. Those in the crowd outside collect themselves and rise cautiously, unsure if there will be more violence.  The reporters also stand but keep their distances, for now.

She-Hulk and Wonder Man, powerhouses with rare equal on Earth, were knocked down, such was their proximity to the explosion/implosion of the building less than a few dozen feet away, being outside of the blast but still being affected by its tangential concussive force.  They have no further injuries, though their clothes, now covered in soot, will probably need to be disposed.  In front of them lie the remains of the facility, a flattened husk of debris and rubble.

Iron Man's most immediate feeling is of being trapped.  He cannot move but there has no immediate pain -- his armor and whatever shields that went up during the explosion held well.  Movement becomes minimal, but only after some great effort.  His armor’s internal sensors might blink online but sight from the helmet’s eye-slits is non-existent, as it is covered in red.

Black Panther is also immobile, but alive.  Movement is free to an extent, though it is through some thick, viscous liquid.  His face is covered but there is an air pocket that affords some breathing for the moment.  A carpet of wet, coarse hair brushes over his arms where his costume has been torn away, and there is a sense of flesh-on-flesh with whatever bubble he is inside.  The rancid smell is also familiar, but this time considerably more concentrated, as he realizes his face is pressed against the matter that he fought against just a short time before.  The blob is all around him, but the hero is uninjured.  His surroundings are soft and warm even though they offer no escape.  Whether the creature meant to or not, and even though the Wakandan is trapped now, the blob saved his life!

(From here is the aftermath of the scene.  No need to keep track of initiative or order -- jump in where you want, act and react as you like.  Assume that any action you attempt will succeed, but do not write for NPCs or the environs. Anyone else from the adventure can jump in here where they like.)

Upon the voice command, the system buzzes to life but only after an ear-piercing screech from which Stark is unable to cover his ears or turn away. “Good morning, Mr. Stark. This is Friday. There is currently an amount of weight totaling approximately 81.26 tons providing pressure upon this suit. There is an advisement to alleviate this weight. The day is not currently Friday. There is currently 2 minutes and 35 seconds before the breathable air available is depleted and you will begin suffocation. There is an advisement to find a new supply of air. The current day is not currently available. A medical check of your person reveals a 73.9% chance that you have sustained no harm and a 27.1% chance that every bone in your body has been shattered beyond any use. The current level of power in the communications module is Communications module shutting down.” Then static louder than it should be.

Re: The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

She-Hulk slowly stands up and looks around. She bangs herself on the side of the head a few times to try to stop the ringing in her ears. That's when she feels a cooler breeze than she should across her chest and she looks down to see that her clothing has been shredded. Not the least bit modest, she looks towards the cameras to see if they've managed to get a topless shot of her. She winks at one of the camera men as she takes an extra second or two twisting a piece of metal garage door into a makeshift bikini top.

That business taken care of, and the ringing in her ears finally giving way to a low rumble, she looks around for Tigra and Wonder Man. She sees Tigra's arm sticking out from under a pile of rubble and rushes over, tossing car-sized chunks of concrete and metal this way and that like it's little more than balls of paper, frantically digging her way to the fallen Avenger. The rubble finally cleared away, she lightly pats Tigra on either side of her face. "Come on, Greer, wake up." she says.

She quickly carries Tigra's limp form over to the bystanders and points to the camera man who's day she made. "Call an ambulance. Avengers emergency code Alpha Victor 37 November. Oh, and you owe me dinner too." she adds before turning around and rushing back to dig through the rubble for more survivors.

"Wonder Man! Wake up! There were Avengers in this thing when it went up. Wake your Hollywood butt up and get digging!"

Re: The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

Iron Man’s communications systems sputters back in blips and beeps back through the static.  “The organic matter above and surrounding this suit is no living.  Warning, Mr. Stark: Grapefruit.  Grapefruit, Mr. Stark. Gggggggrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaapeffffff --”  Then the deafening screech heard when he first activated it again, only louder this time.

“Dinner…” the cameraman drawls, shortly before picking his jaw from the ground.  As the first camera operator to have his gear ready after the explosion/implosion, he probably has an exclusive.  But this one he might keep for himself.

Tigra stirs only slightly but it’s a sign of life.  The bystanders gather around her, less gawking and more forming some kind of circle of protection around the Avenger, knowing she nearly sacrificed her noble life on their behalf.  A show of New York solidarity.

While waiting for Wonder Man to catch up, She-Hulk frantically digs into the wreckage of the warehouse.  Not knowing what happened inside the facility, she has no idea what to expect from her excavation, and would not be blamed for fearing the worst.  The top layer is the usual debris: iron, steel, machinery, trash and debris, everything twisted and broken beyond use or recognition.  She does not have to notice the small fires that lap at her skin.  As she gets deeper, having no direction on where to dig, she comes upon the horror she dreaded but did not want to imagine: a mass of human bodies, now bloodied and torn apart, casualties of whatever appalling event happened in there.  Their thrashed costumes are green with yellow stripes: it’s not a secret from an Avenger that these were Hydra agents.  But the sheer number of them is stupefying, as she could reluctantly claw through them only to find no end to corpses, a thick layer of bodies crushed under the tons of material on them.

Areas of the blob around T’Challa become warm and almost liquid, allowing him to swim through the creature, being careful not to breathe the thing into his mouth or nostrils.  Rationing his breath and taking advantage of other pockets of air that he encounters while making his way through the ghastly thing, he is able to feel around enough to find another body.  While there is a possibility that it could be the Sentry, he recognizes it as the blond man strapped into the machine, from what he can make out with the blob’s matter pressed against their faces.

Carol is in the dark. Hunched, with what feels like a ton of metal and wires pressing against her back. Safely under her is Black Widow, unconscious.

Her power is exhausted, she is exhausted. Her legs are trembling--not in fear, but in tremoring weakness. She still stands, though, her friends are hurt, maybe dead. The only thing she can hear is her ragged breath. It's hot and stifling from the metal heated by her power blast that has come down like a rain of boulders.

She focuses on her breath. Drawing deep breaths and centering herself. Giving herself clarity that had escaped her in the midst of battle. She can feel the power inside slowly, in pulsing waves keeping time with the beat of her heart, fill the cells of her body.

Her legs stop shaking and she shifts her stance by inches, giving herself the leverage she's going to need. She moves her arms under the metal, seeking purchase for her hands. She braces and metal explodes outward as she springs up, triumphant!

She sees that her extrication has also revealed a huge chunk of ice and she can see figures inside. Taking care not to endanger any of the people imprisoned within, she uses her internal power softly, like a firey warmth and not a pulsing blast.

With a quick look to make sure Widow isn't in any danger, Carol pulses and melts the giant ball of ice.

Re: The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

In a small section of what was the warehouse, the surface of the wreckage bursts upward, revealing the triumphant figure of Capt. Marvel and clearing away debris enough so that the block of ice can be seen.  Around it was wrapped a layer of vibranium coils, courtesy of the Constrictor's only gimmick, now falling to the ground.  Though the ice is massive, there can be seen four bodies inside.  Just as Marvel is warming the ice from the outside, inside it is a red glow, emanating from the chest and hands of the one of the figures, and slowly the ice around that body sweats then finally melts to reveal the Human Torch.  "Whoa," he says, brushing the moisture off his body, adorned in clothing torn since the last time the heroes saw him.  "I only like that much ice if it's saving my life."  Sufficiently dry, he turns back to the ice, his hands turning into a low flame and begins warming it from the outside, moving his hands slowly along the surface.  The next body to emerge from the ice is Hawkeye, or at least the hero who could be presumed to be Hawkeye, as his suit has been torn away with only a sliver of his mask remaining, his body exposed from the waist up, with numerous cuts and bruises covering him.  "Well, if it worked for Cap for however many years that was, I guess it could work for us for however long that was.  I'm not an old fogey now, am I?"  Hawkeye steps from the ice and pulls the Constrictor's coils away just as the villain becomes the next figure to be freed from the ice.  He nearly falls out of the ice as he is released but he staggers to his feet, dropping into a  combat stance, though a sloppy one when he realizes he no longer has his coils.  He quickly looks around him, measuring up his opposition, but no hero bothers to move toward him, as he is so clearly outmatched.  Hawkeye turns to the last body in the city as the Torch moves toward it.  "Now we just have to deal with these last two.”

As the heroes collect themselves, the Black Widow rises to her feet and coughs.  She looks at Marvel's battered form.  "You've seen better days, Carol.  But then," says says, rubbing her throat, "So have the rest of us."  She looks around.  "That was rough.  Rougher than it should have been."

Grapefruit? There must be some damage to the suit's computer core. Good thing I have a few spares at home.

Taskmaster said I was going to die. Maybe he was right. Maybe I'm dead and this is...purgatory?

What kind of food do dead people eat? We ate Shawarma after New York. Hey, Thor promised to get me some Asgardian Ale, and he never delivered. It probably slipped his mind. I should remind him. Yeah...once I get out of here, I'll remind him.

Tony tries, once more, to be free of the rubble above him. The suit's nano-servomotors, millions of them, in consort, reinforce his actions. Slowly, he slides his hands together in front of him, the large pieces of concrete and steel pressed up against the suit giving only centimeters for him to work with. Tensioning cables, rebar, and electrical conduit all hinder his progress, but there's alien alcohol on the line...and, after a day like today, Tony's thirst can be extreme.

And, I'm supposed to go to Elon's test site and try out that new electric jet we talked about. An electric jet? I just don't see it...but he's done some amazing stuff. May as well give it a look.

As he now presses outward, and hopefully upward, Tony feels the resistance. He feels the debris move just barely, and then more...and more, until he can finally engage what remains of the suit's flight systems. To any on-lookers, the rush of debris pushing upward would resemble an ant-hill, if ant-hills were made of broken concrete, and other industrial construction materials.

Re: The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

Iron Man bursts from the wreckage, debris bursting from his eruption from below, but not all detritus is metal and concrete -- body parts are strewn about, leaving the hero covered in human remains as much as mechanical.  Limbs and hair and shreds of uniforms and entrails cover him, the color of his armor changed to red, from the blood of the obliterated minions.  Looking back at the hole from which he came, it is a cavern of corpses, once human beings now reduced to rubble left in the wake of the destruction of this section of the city.

Not far away from Iron Man are Capt. Marvel, Black Widow, and those emerging from the block of ice, now mostly melted, and with the last figure, the Blizzard, presently emerging from it.  Keeping his eyes on the villains but addressing no one in particular, Hawkeye grouses, “‘Rough’ is like saying Galactus causes a bit of panic. What happened here?”

T'Challa quickly cuts the bonds holding the blond man to the chair and "swims" as best he can through the mass of organic matter, holding the man in a perfect lifeguard's hold.  Once he reaches the surface, he takes an explosive gasp of air.  Before removing himself, he heaves the blond man onto the surface and out of the remains of the blob, before pulling himself out.  He quickly begins to check the man for life signs and to see if any first aid is necessary.

Re: The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

"What happened, Hawk, Is we failed."
It hurts Carol to have to say that, but it's the only answer that's honest, and right now they need honest. They need some integrity.

Carol looks at the carnage and destruction and a deep sigh, almost a choke, comes out.
"This shouldn't have happened. We're Avengers. Avengers don't kill and we sure as hell don't let people die if we can help it." She sweeps her hand out in a wide gesture,"All this? It's on us. Hydra or not, these people shouldn't have had to die. We're going to have to make this right. I don't know how, but we are."

Carol is wavering between utter fatigue and determined resolve. She knows they can't blame anything on being set-up or mind-controlled or any of those tricks masterminds use to get superheroes to stop believing in themselves and their abilities. It weighs on her, that nagging doubt that this is as simple as it seems. Where did it go wrong? Maybe some supervillain is messing with them?

Looking at Tony in his gore-drenched armor dripping with offal makes Carol realize that each of them, even if they don't actually look like they flew through an abbatoir and have costumes made of chum, they do have blood on their hands.

But Carol has no answer, only the desire to do better. She's going to figure this out. She's going to fix this. Somehow.

“‘What happened?’” the Constrictor spits. “What happened is that we were minding our own business -- doing nothing wrong -- and you superhero jerks burst in there and the place blew up!  Now they’re all dead!”

The Human Torch pauses, taking in a measure of the man, then, “But you wouldn’t be there unless you were getting paid, so there had to have been some purpose, and, knowing you and the rest, it wasn’t good.”
