Chapter 1 - the Good Book
Nika saunters up to the Phoenix and, as casually as possible, scopes out the street before taking one last drag off the cigarette dangling from her lips, crushing it out, pocketing the butt and, sliding into the meeting. On her way to the table the young Garou's eyes flick over the interior noting potential exits, places to take cover and the general mood of those already present.

Nodding the slightest of nods to the group, Nika addresses the good Father in a voice that has just the barest hint of an accent, Father, I hope this is worth the tips I am missing and not just an introduction to your vacation coverage. Without waiting for a reply she chooses a seat with no windows or doors behind it and, nudging it a jar with a toe, slips into it, assuming a posture of relaxed indifference with her body only half facing the table.

Chapter 1 - the Good Book
The Golden Phoenix was a one room dining hall with mostly round tables equipped with lazy susans for serving family style. The front was a wide pane of colored and gilded glass depicting the restaurant's namesake. The back had two doors for servers to enter and exit the kitchen. There was also a side hallway leading to restrooms.

"Of course not," Father Sandy replied, "I, or rather Brother Angelo here, has a proposition for you."

Like Nika, Brother Angelo had chosen a seat facing towards as many exits as possible. Like Notch, he seemed to be looking around nervously. Unlike either of them, he was nervous and suspicious, though more of his surroundings than his meal companions.

"There's a manuscript," he said quietly, as if he were afraid someone would hear, "it's old and it's rare. Someone stole it, and I'd like you to get it back."

In reply to the Beast (msg # 7):

Stole it from who? You? And why not get the cops? I hear they handle robbery cases all the time. Not effectively but still...
Offers up some of his chow mein to Nika.
He kept an eye on Father Sandy. If this was all hush hush, why meet in public? Did Sandy know this place was safe? Had he told the paranoid one?
He arched an eyebrow at the padre wondering what ace was up the sleeve....or what boot was about to drop.

Chapter 1 - the Good Book
"It was stolen from a...private foreign library," the nervous Brother Angelo replied carefully, "but prior to that, provenance of the manuscript is...undetermined."

Father Sandy rolled his eyes at Angelo's reticent explanation and began to clarify.

"What my esteemed associate has failed to mention, is that he's from-OW!" someone, probably Brother Angelo from the glare Father Sandy sent his way, had kicked him in the shin, "fine, an independent enclave in Italy. There's no record of ownership, and to have it reported through Interpol would be...embarrassing."

Chapter 1 - the Good Book
Glancing sideways at John Henry's chow mein, conflicting emotions of pride versus practicality chase briefly across Nika's face as she considers his offer. Finally, her features set in a sardonic smirk, she replies wryly, "I am not the beggar but, I feel I can not be the chooser either.  If someone with your roots sees me and offers charity, I must not look much better than the beggar. So yes, I will have some chow mein...  Thank you."

The matter of filling ones belly settled, Nika regards Father Angelo quietly. Then chuckling dryly at the nervous Father's retasense says, If you want me to play fetch, you are going to have to be a little more forthcoming then that Father. For starters, your whole attitude is wrong for the victim of a simple robbery.  You act instead, like the victim or witness to a more violent crime who is afraid violence will find them again for seeking help. So, is stolen the only word you are going with here or should you be adding words like assualt or murdered to the mix? Also, what kind of manuscript would send you looking for our kind of help? And, you can save the embarresment line, artifacts and manuscripts go missing all the time and few if any warrent people like us getting involved."

Chapter 1 - the Good Book
"I told you they would need more," Father Sandy said to Brother Angelo, winking at John and Nika, "I'm sorry for all this cloak and dagger business, Brother Angelo insisted--embarrassment is a big thing, when we're talking about the Church."

"The Church keeps a collection of items that it considers dangerous or heretical in a vault--mostly, it's looted goods from the Crusades to the Inquisition."

A secret vault in the Vatican of stolen artifacts? That was a huge scandal.

"Supposedly, the thieves stole an original copy of the Ars Paulina--part of a larger text on the summoning and binding of angels, demons, and spirits."

"Not that we believe in that old world nonsense," Brother Angelo was quick to add, while Father Sandy rolled his eyes again. He knew full well about the hidden world of spirits, even if Brother Angelo thought it was hooey superstition.

"We just want it back, quietly, with the minimum amount of publicity."

A secret Vatican vault with books about demonology? Yeah, that was getting into international scandal territory.

It's not my charity. The Pope-mobile is footing this bill. Plus Chinese food is a social thing. We eat from the communal plate.
Now last time I checked we were in Oakland. What makes you look to us for help amigo?

Handing Notch mostly food it wouldn't be odd to see her eat with her hands.
Wiping any grease off his hands he pulls out his phone and begins doing preliminary internet searches about this book. Hopefully Google will understand his best guess spelling.
Couldn't just be a thank you lunch from Sandoval, sheesh.

"The thieves came to Oakland," Brother Angelo replied, "and Father Sandoval suggested you might be better suited to finding them than a private investigator."

"we are."comes Vladislava's rich, smooth voice from the door. "Am I late?"
He also takes his time to note exits and count the number of heads in the room before gliding up to the table in his hand stitched, custom tailored clothes.

Chapter 1 - the Good Book
In reply to Vladislava Ramirez (msg # 14):

Notch only half listens to the conversation.  The food is considerably more interesting.  She repeatedly reminds herself not to just put her snout . . . mouth . . . to the plate to eat and at least pick it up with her paws . . . hands . . . like John seems to be indicating she should do.

Manuscripts are a fancy name for paper.  Paper is really just good for piddling on.  Except that people write on it and then it suddenly seems important to them.  It’s probably one of those papers.  She has no idea why they would call her in for this unless they want her to piddle on the manuscript for them but she is sure they could just do that themselves.

Notch is bored.  She stopped listening to this ‘Church’ man a while ago.  She likes the church though, they always give her free food and warm places to sleep when it is cold if she runs in homid form.  She half watches Father Sandy and John to figure out what cues she should be taking and otherwise focuses of her food.  If they like the man she will go with them.

The fancy garou who bought her clothing has come in . . . Vladislava, she remembers.  She leans towards him to sniff him and stops.  Homids bare their teeth when happy.  She turns to Vladislava and shows him her canines in a way she hopes looks friendly.

On the other hand she doesn't know this the other woman.  No one has introduced them.  She leans towards her to sniff greetings then remembers she should bark greetings, not sniff.  Homids are strange.  Abruptly she interrupts whoever else might be greeting Vladislava and says to Nika, “Hello!  Who are you?”

What is our budget like?

If this was someone else he would pester more. Seeing who his companions were, figured he better cut to the chase. Sandy though was always a straight shooter, so if he brought this group together, these were the ones he really thought would help.
John knew the newcomers by rep only. There was not much he didn't hear about. Better than working with Get.

Chapter 1 - the Good Book
In reply to Notch (msg # 15):

Vladislava stalks into the room. he takes a deep slow breath through his nose to catch scent off of everyone at the table. He eyes the gang and tries, as best he can through body language and eye contact say that he is like them. Garou, if born of a different tribe. He tries to introduces himself in a way that is know able to the Assembled Garou but inconspicuous to outsiders.

Publicly, in a gesture of precticed smoothness, he extends his hand first to Sandoval with a, "Father." and then he goes about the table offering a hand shake to everyone. "Vladislava. Quite pleased." if you do not shake, he doesn't seem to mind. he just gives his name and gets yours, repeating it to himself to memorize it.

If you do shake, his hands are warm and his grip is firm. He trembles slightly with unexpressed Rage coursing through his body. There is no challenge in the grip. No manly pissing matches. Just a good shake.

He saves his last shake for Angelo. This shake DOES have some challenge in it. and while introducing himself he looks at Sandoval as if to say, Is this guy ok?

Chapter 1 - the Good Book
Father Sandy gave a little nod to Vladislava to indicate that he did indeed trust this man before answering John's question.

"Sixty dollars per hour for each of you and a twenty thousand dollar bonus to share after the manuscript has been recovered," Father Sandy replied, with a sharp glance at Brother Angelo's expression of dismay. Father Sandy might trust his fellow Catholic, but he didn't always agree with him.

Noting with amusement the other woman's obvious struggle with human social graces but, making no comment on the effect her conversational gambit might have had on the flow of Vladislava's greetings, Nika smiles without barring teeth and replies, "My name is Nika, and you are?"

In reply to Nika Dragomir (msg # 21):

To Nika, “I’m Notch.” She continues on speaking more to the table then any individual, “I know all the others, except the friend of Father’s.  I know my skills.  I think I know some of John Henry’s.  Fancy guy doesn’t fit with us.  I don’t know Nika.  Why us four?  Why of all to gather would us four be the right for this fetch job if it is an item that would be dangerous or hire-something-or-rather?”  Notch stops and pauses, still processing the conversation in her head.  To Father Sandy, “Why did your brother kick you for trying to say where he was from?”

Chapter 1 - the Good Book
Father Sandy was always good for an honest chat. He wasn't keen on lying--there was that whole commandment thing and all. On the other hand, he could be rather chatty.

"Let me start with the last one first, because that's the easiest," Father Sandy smiled, nodding to Notch, "Brother Angelo doesn't want people to know who he represents because he's afraid it will reflect badly on his leader. This is a terrible metaphor, because human society is ridiculously over complicated, but Brother Angelo is trying to gain respect by retrieving this item for his alpha and also protect his alpha by keeping other alphas from knowing he let something valuable get stolen."

"As for why you four, it's because I know you,"
Father Sandy shrugged, "First, I don't know what skills you will need, and the four of you represent a sufficiently diverse set of skills that you will at least know how to approach any problem you encounter. Second, you're polite enough that I can trust you to at least attempt the job after accepting it. And third, well, not to be crass, but I don't imagine the money would hurt."

"Also, Brother Orsini might not believe the supernatural can hurt you,"
Father Sandy finished, earning him a glare from Brother Orsini, "but that doesn't mean that the supernatural isn't going to try.

"Stupid superstitions," Brother Orsini growled, passing over four large manila envelopes while glaring at Father Sandy, "this is everything we know about the perpetrators, including their last known aliases."

"That first one is Vladamir Wazeluski, a known collector of antiquities. He offered to buy the item a few years ago--how he even knew it was in the vaults I don't know--but his offer was declined. We think he's their buyer, but we can't confirm his whereabouts."

"The other three are Gavin Gutierrez, Adriana LaRoche, and Devlin Lucas. Everything you need to know is in those envelopes. Now, if you'll excuse me,"
he said rising stiffly, "I have other business to attend to. Father Sandoval has my number if you find anything."
