Whispers in the Night

It was a dark night, though there were no storms present. Mist rose up from the ground, shrouding the streets of the town of Root. Occasional torch light could be seen flickering as the town garrison made their nightly rounds. The streets were almost preternaturally quiet. Even the taverns had closed. Only the infrequent clatter of stealthy figures making their ways across the rooftops disturbed the silence.

Three dark forms lumbered their way out of the mist. Two slim, cloaked figures carried a large body between them. Had the streets been busier the trio could have been confused for two beleaguered souls taking their drunken friend home for the evening. But as the streets were empty, the pair was not even trying to pretend that the body they carried was still alive. They carried the body more like a bundle of dead weight than a concerned friend. Yet even under the load, one of the figures was glancing around nervously.

“You know,” the male figure spoke as he casually shifted to balance the load. “A lesser man might have problems carrying a body which is slowly stiffening from death. Good thing we’re blessed, right?”

“Silence,” the female figure hissed. “We still have some distance to cover and we must not be noticed.”

The male smiled, his feline eyes flicking around. “Right… that is why you would choose not to continue on that train of thought. That we might not see someone prying, at a time like this.”

At this the female figure said nothing.

His point made, he paused before continuing. “Well, no matter. It’s just weight.”

The pair lapsed into silence. Their footsteps, heavy under the weight, were muffled by the mild fog enveloping the streets. “You think me to be a monster,” Nessa said softly. “I have seen it. I have seen the way some of the others look at me. Even my (proverbial? Hypothetical?) master looks at me oddly when he believes I am not paying attention. It is fine and well that I gather the information, but nobody dares think about the means. As if any of us can claim to be bloodless and pure.”

Rikuto listened carefully, humming in thought. “I believe your fears are merely phantoms. I can only speak truly for myself, but I do not believe any of us reserve these thoughts for you. In my eyes…” There was a noticeable pause here, as he tried to gather his thoughts, and lowered his tone. “I know little of you. However… from what I have seen of you your trade is merely a means to an end; an end we most certainly need. Not every threat or contact will present itself in a manner we can handle... publicly. You are trusted, in this Circle, to choose the right path for your own and our interests, and...” He sighed, defeated. “I can only repeat what you already know. . . . Our worlds are far and near at times.”

The pair silently navigated the city streets for a while before Nessa spoke again. “It is… difficult here. Being in this group. In my village it is easier. Ninja are as tools, wielded at the hand of our Kage. Any contract with a client is investigated and considered by wiser heads. As the hand I merely have to think about how the task is accomplished. These decisions over when and who to kill… in the village it would be years before I would have to decide such things. In the field these are the decisions of Chunin, not a Genin such as myself. I believe the choices I have made would be considered justifiable in my village, else I would not have made them. However, it is difficult sometimes to bear the looks of others who have not had to wield a blade with such a bloody hand.”

A Lesson in Etiquette

Nessa looked around, taking a scene of decadent revelry. The group had attended the arena that night, with Nessa taking her usual role as Handmaiden to Qin'ai. The festivities at the arena had wrapped up and the nobility had moved to a set of after-festivities set up at various locations. These parties were quite regular, and as much a chance to tour the homes of the wealthy and influential as anything else. Nessa did her best to stick to the edges of gatherings, staying within calling distance of her master but otherwise out of the way... as an attendant properly should.

Still, even the most obedient of servants must make a run to the food table every now and again. Especially after having just brought a few plates full to one's master and the current circle of people he was flirting with.

"...but perhaps you grow bored of hearing it from me. Excuse me, good lady. Would you mind giving my students and I a moment of your time?"

"What?" Nessa looked around, bringing her hand to her throat in a gesture of gentle surprise. An older woman with the look of an upper crust servant was in the act of standing up. At the table she'd been sitting at sat a pair of girls in their early teens. The young ladies were clearly noble by their garb. The older servant curtseyed, an act Nessa half-heartedly returned while taking in the trio.

"Good evening, fair lady. My name is Sur-Pai of house V'Neef. These are the ladies Ichi and Ni. We have been invited to take in the festivities as an opportunity for education." Sur-Pai continued on, but Nessa began to filter the words out as she took in the situation for herself. The two girls were clearly excited to be out at a party for possibly the first time of their lives, and also just as clearly wishing they could be anywhere but chained to this teacher. The smaller one, Ni, looked particularly put upon. Nessa recalled her own days immersed in study when she'd have rather been at play. She gave the girls a sympathetic smile.

The older woman had stopped talking. What was it she wanted? Oh, yes. Something about an etiquette lesson. Nessa nodded politely, an evil idea taking root in her mind. "Good evening to you, good woman. My name is Nessa Petulengro. As it happens, I do recall a discussion of etiquette which the young ladies may benefit from. You see, I happened to be attending my master when he was asked a very similar question by someone giving a lesson in manners to two young men."

"Now then," Nessa said as she was silently invited to seat herself  at the table with the trio. "Two young men, perhaps a bit older than the young ladies here, were being instructed in the ways of the court. The instructor had posed them a situation. 'Imagine that you are at a party with a young lady,' he'd said. 'You find yourself in need of the bathroom. What is the best way to excuse yourself from the lady's company?'

"The first of the two young men immediately spoke up. 'Just a minute, I have to go pee.'

"Well, of course that wouldn't do. 'Such language would be rude and impolite,' the instructor said. 'Perhaps you should think on it some more before you try again.' Then the man gestured at the other boy. 'What would you do?'

"The boy took a moment to think before he spoke. 'I'm sorry, but I need to go to the bathroom. I'll be right back.'

"At this the instructor frowned. 'That would be... adequate... were you at an informal gathering or even at low court. But it would not do to speak the word bathroom while in High Society.' Then the instructor noticed my master, who had been listening to  all of this with a somewhat bored expression, and turned to him. 'My lord, would you grace us with the proper wording for such a situation?'

"Now you must understand that my master had simply been nearby while attending other business. He was of such a noble standing that it was frankly a little insulting for a servant to have addressed him so. But my master has never cared to be strictly formal unless he is required to be, which added a somewhat ironic tone to this conversation. My master nodded to the instructor with a tolerant smile. 'Were I in such a circumstance, I would respond thusly: Darling, may I please be excused for a moment? I have to shake hands with a very dear friend of mine, whom I hope to introduce you to after dinner.' "

Nessa smiled gently at the shocked servant, much like Qin'ai had smiled at the male instructor, before sinking in the final knife. "And that, young ladies, is a lesson worth remembering. Proper etiquette and good manners are the social framework of the court, but a frame does not stand without purpose. Should you want to excel in society, you must understand how to frame your words correctly without tying their true meaning down to such rigid structures."

Nessa glanced from the paling white face of the school marm to the reddened faces of the two girls, both of whom were biting their lips to stifle their laughter. "Please excuse me, but I feel myself growing a bit faint. I believe some strengthening victuals are in order. I hope all of you have a most enjoyable evening." She stood, curtseyed a goodbye, and continued on her way. Behind her, one of the girls let out a muffled snort. Nessa silently tsk'd. Such unladylike behavior.


(Note: The tutor servant's name Sur-Pai comes from the Mandarin Chinese word 挫败 which means to foil, frustrate, or defeat.)
