I made a non-definitive description for Luminous. I didn't like any of the pictures so I sent in one that I'm planning to use when it gets uploaded. I also put it in her description for reference.

GM, if I may ask, how many players were you thinking of for this game?

I know how that feels!

You can ask the mods to upload one avatar per month that you'll actually be using, so you can't ask them to upload a bunch unfortunately.

You mail the picture to portraits@rpol.net and add your username (or else it won't get added). They upload new pictures once a month, around the 27th.

You can find more info here: /help/?t=faqs&page=portraitsfaq

I've found that it's best to send the image in the right size yourself. I once sent a bigger one and they compressed it and it became really blurry.

The Library has no "official" authority.  In fact, its operations other than as a purely mundane historical and arts library are secret.

If you want to get anywhere an ordinary visitor cannot get, you will have to do this the hard way.

On the other hand, you do have a Sylph available- Haelee. They fly.   And there are some other powers at your command.

Fey characters can do so naturally.  For them, it's like looking at an "ambiguous image". Like the famous Duck Bunny.   You can force yourself to look at it one way, or the other.

For Human characters, we shall assume they all have some talisman, artifact, charm or other power, maybe just an inherent "Gift" that allows them to see things as they really are.

It wouldn't help for characters committed to work with the Faerie world to be unable to see it.

I'm going to assume that Winston and Kioshi link up with the others, then.

Given the length of the trip, they'd get there early evening.  So you get your choice of just where to meet:

The airport itself, near the Norwegian airlines counter.
At the wildlife refuge.
Nearby, at a restaurant
A little further down towards the beach.

Meanwhile, Evaline checked in today, so I hope she'll post soon.

I will assume it is the same time for Evaline and Julian, obviously they ran a little longer studying and then went to Bryant Park by early evening.

Let's assume the party can regroup at night, then, close to the place their Troll is currently being held.

There are available places to rendezvous, stores, parks, or perhaps at the same pizza place.

At any rate, they need to work out their next move.

It is only a matter of time before the NYPD either:

1)  Transfers their troll to some other agency.
2)  Figures out their detainee is speaking a form of Norwegian.

or

3)  Needs the cell for a more important suspect, or merely just gets bored and lets him go.

We have a potential new player with a different and I think interesting idea for a character.  A dog.  Not just an ordinary dog, of course, but a Faerie Dog.  The catch is, it's a dog.

In trying to think of a way to get a dog mixed in with the story arcs and able to go where everyone else goes (most of everyone, that is) one very interesting idea is "Service Dog!".

Service Dogs can go anywhere, and although they are normally considered just for the blind, this is not the case.  There are service dogs for a variety of things.

But, we would need a character to volunteer to act as the "dog handler" when the characters are in a public place, like the pizza restaurant where you now are.

You're not missing things, it's a good solution to Nisse catching, but you do have to have a solution to the problem of time.

Remember, your characters are not alone, they have their cell phones, and they can call in favors, and even set up a rotating watch.

We can always skip ahead to the plot points, we don't have to fill every moment of the characters' lives.

That last one is actually one of my ongoing gripes with so many RPOL stories.  Everyone wants to do everything "now".  All of life is lived in one Saturday afternoon.  There is nothing wrong in taking things like a film or book and saying "Let's move ahead to the point where THIS happens", and move past simple "ordinary" things that do not advance the characters or the story.

This is one reason why I have a Thread Request Thread.  It's there for:  What would you like the next scene to be?

Your characters would know *of* any other characters affiliated with the Library, even if they do not know them well.  You can even assume the Library has a roster.

I always find it interesting the limits on abilities... I mean if you can literally do ANYTHING then things get boring... presumably you can't just summon one of the gnomes or someone would have done that and we could talk to it, and presumably none of the characters so far could dowse for them etc... but IC and OOC I'm wondering what each type of fey can do, and what they can't do.

What makes their magic different to each other? Why are elves considered strong at magic (what can they do that most fey can't)? And what can't they do that they might have skimmed over or asked 'lesser fey' to do in the past?

I have a few ideas... but I know I'm new and I'm not sure what's already been established or what other people have in mind for their characters or what details have been stewing in the GM's brain etc...

I'm thinking perhaps the elves are more ritual magic based? They can make big powerful stuff but they need preparation to do it? (Though I'm not sure as there's another elf in the cast list but she hasn't commented on anything since Christmas, did she do any spells?)

I can imagine pre-preparing a magical shield amulet or something that they can activate short notice, or charging wands with magic etc but mostly being restricted by needing ingredients and visualisation etc... and thus doing their magic in secret. They couldn't make a cookie appear (even if they knew what they were doing) but could take an hour or so and enchant a cookie jar so that it was ALWAYS full of cookies.

Or of course if they weren't in a cookie mood they could do more dramatic things like magic swords, summoning rituals, hiding whole sections of forest from humans, enchanting someone with a powerful glamour that replicated the veil so that they couldn't see fey or be seen by other fey for three times seven years.... possibly a particularly powerful elf, or group of elves, created the veil in the first place but nobody knows because it happened so long ago.

This would explain why the description says the high fey are known for having very strong magic, but without going OP as there's still restrictions (they just might not advertise them so other types of fey might not know).

What do people think?

Rather than specific rituals (which would result in "you must get X spell book") I'm thinking it's the narratives and sympathetic magic aspects, if it makes a good story in the elf's mind that's how they channel the power of narrative into the objects imbuing them with magic that they use in the spell.

Actually, I'm a Hulda/Hulder. It's just that when they settled in America they were named Wendigos by the locals and it kinda stuck.

For those not familiar with Norse Folklore: A Hulda is a female elf who walks the woods, lures in men and then eats them. A Hulder is the male variant. A Hulda is always incredibly beautiful, and Hulders are always described as incredibly ugly.

As for the topic of Elvish Magic:

Being a natural folk, magic involving use of natural components would make the most sense to me. Ritualistic magic seems fitting as well so long as it has a traditional base. I'm used to playing systems similar to Changeling: the Dreaming, where "fast-casting" is difficult, but difficulty is lowered through "bunks" or semi-ritualistic actions.

Also, it could just be me talking, but I feel like if one is rolling with an elf or pixie, or other magically-inclined being that keeping the range of one's magic to a certain area helps to insure everyone is still rather unique. I limited Felix's own magical capabilities to be only regarding ice/snow/the cold and to be not fully controlled in an effort to give him a niche and for story opportunities. Also mostly because despite being considered int he general taxonomy for being an "Elf" species, Hulda/Hulder are not known for their magic prowess.

Hmmm.... It's not really covered (as she doesn't know it IC) but I kind of see Violet as more Sidhe court in terms of her family tree, that perhaps there was some battle between courts or an attack when she was a baby and her mother hid her from all fey including herself to keep her safe until someone could come and find her, but nobody did (perhaps they were dead or didn't know where to look because she was too well hidden or thought she had been killed etc).

I'm just trying to work out what a lost faerie princess who didn't know she HAD magic until now would have in terms of magic :P

Traditional Elf magic is associated with "Glamour" - not generally the fashion kind, but it overlaps.  Elf magic changes appearances.  It can make things brighter, and "feel" brighter as well, disguise people or things or even places.  Elves can conjure light and "play" with it.

The General OOC Chatting Thread

Mostly for our new players:

I'm going to start a new thread, skipping over the time, and allowing the characters to regroup.  The new thread is, "At the Stock Exchange"

The characters have thus far figured out that something very strange is going on with little "Christmas Elves", the traditional Nisse of Norway, who have been decorating big public Christmas trees in the middle of the night.

The decorations involve ancient Norwegian runes of magical power.  And also they've apparently abducted an important Norwegian Troll.  So things are a little bit worrisome.

The characters at the library have a good idea of when and where the Nisse will make their next appearance:  the tree at the New York Stock Exchange.  So they will set a night watch over it, and wait.

The events of "At the Stock Exchange" will assume that characters have been watching over the area, ready to spot the strange little Nisse and catch one, and find out at last what is going on.

This is not mandatory!  The library is not that kind of organization.  They can only ask for help and hope.  If you want to be somewhere else, let me know.

New Characters- we will assume the library put the word out that help might be required, as this is serious business, so characters who didn't previously participate have a reason to be there.

Hmmm, glamour always strikes me as small magic (as it only changes the appearance not the reality) and the description said elves were known for their strong magic... I mean I don't mind but this seems like a clash...  Though to be honest the veil is very big and powerful glamour, but seeing as that's already in place...

I can work with it, it just seems like the kind of magic that in stories would be had by the underdog and used skillfully to surprise everyone, not what you'd expect the 'high' fairies to be known for. *shrugs*

Re: The General OOC Chatting Thread

See now that seems a more interesting concept...

To be honest the main reason for asking everyone else is that there's other high faeries and if all the elves had similar powers (like all pixies can fly) then it'd be good for us to have consistency on what they are. But as it turns out the other two active high faeries are more loosely associated with the elves (being a Djinn and a Wendigo) and therefore slightly different, and there's no sign of Evaline... perhaps it doesn't matter.

hmmmmm... I am thinking Seelie Aes Sidhe from a royal bloodline (though there's probably half a dozen courts in Scotland alone so it's not as special as it might sound).

Imbuing magic into an object, such as an enchanted item or brewing a potion of some kind, sounds an interesting way of focusing power, light (as the source of energy for plants, and through them nature as a whole) could be seen as a diluted form of magic and shaped similarly (hence the reputation for glamour), with the reason for the name and the courts being the ability to make the Sidhe (or mound) where particularly powerful elves could create whole palaces and gardens under the ground and safe from human interference.

This is less of a concern these days with science keeping most humans from piercing the veil but it used to be that the courts were the places to seek asylum in return for fealty to the reigning monarch of the mound. (Of course modern fey are less likely to be pro-feudal when the world is full of examples of democracy, but there's been a long history where feudal was the way of the world.)

Okay, all of that was rambling and reasoning based enough to make a pixie grow 3 inches, but I think I have an idea of Elf magic now... at least the noble lines of the Aes Sidhe... (unless people have objections)

Re: The General OOC Chatting Thread

Actually, when it comes to Sidhe, there are 2 "major" courts - Seelie and Unseelie. Every Sidhe is considered generally one of the two.

Every game I've been in, all Sidhe were considered "noble" to some degree, with a large slew of noble houses both Seelie and Unseelie.

As for them being democratic, my only concern is that the Fae in general do not always have similar thought processes to Humans - they're almost alien in that regard.

For prime example, take the scene in Briar Rose where at the christening, the good "seelie" fairies have been invited, but the bad "unseelie" one was not and she shows up anyway. At first, she is cordially, asking if there is some mistake, but when she is told she wasn't invited on purpose, she finds it justifiable to curse the human princess to die by pricking her finger.

By our Human thought process, she did it because she was just so evil. When from a Fey point-of-view, the nobility had taken sides in a the grand Fae conflict between the two courts, and had made themselves the sworn enemies of all Unseelie. A Human's life is minuscule compared to that of a Fey, especially a Sidhe, and the taking of life during youth is often considered a "preferable" death for a Human, as Fey do not find the concept of aging to be an appealing one.

I would think any Fae that hasn't explicitly been raised heavily in the contact of Humans would maintain this somewhat alien thought process. Helpful at times, because different points of view allow one to see a fuller picture, and probably why the Library requires Human aides - because even for all their wealth of knowledge, most Fae just do not understand how Humans work, both physically and emotionally.

Re: The General OOC Chatting Thread

I didn't mean the fey being diplomatic, simply that they may be more reluctant to pledge fealty to the king or queen of a mound if they have non-feudal systems to compare with (depending on the amount of time they spent near humans).

I'm kind of imagining two Courts (capital C) the Seelie and Unseelie, then a few dozen courts (lower case c) each consisting of a mound with its own King or Queen that rules it and which pledges allegiance to one of the Courts, with a High King or Queen ruling the Court. So there'd be (for example) a High Queen of the Seelie in County Galway and a High King in County Wexford (both in Ireland) and these mounds were the first, largest mounds. Then there'd be about a dozen other mounds in Ireland and another 2/3 dozen more scattered across the rest of the UK and western Europe. Each mound is ruled by the sidhe who can control it, who its magic answers to, which is usually hereditary because powerful sidhe tend to have the most powerful children. If a sidhe wants to challenge the High King or Queen all they have to do is take the traditional ruling mound from them by magical force.

Most sidhe can't make their own mound, and it would be very lonely if everyone had one and nobody gathered, so they pledge themselves to the King or Queen of a mound and serve them, 'lesser' fey pledge themselves to one of the sidhe, often the King or Queen will put one of the sidhe in charge of brownies and another in charge of true fey and so forth... depending on the numbers of each in their territory (another reason why there's few new mounds in most countries, established mounds don't want extra competition).

Because few sidhe leave their mounds other than to mix up the gene pool a little and strengthen the Courts by going to an allied mound they haven't spread as far as many types of fey and there may not be many in America... though there's probably at least one court of each somewhere, perhaps a Seelie in Washington and an Unseelie in Chicago?

All sidhe have a link to enchantment to a degree (hence their ability to be chosen to shape a mound by the magic of the mound itself) but most find their power more drawn to certain elements or concepts (such as battle or love) it is rare for a sidhe to specialise in enchantment, but only those powerful enchanters can create a new mound (and other powerful artefacts, such as Excalibur because iron is very very hard to magic).

The Morgan library may even be considered an honorary mound because the protection of the veil (which on re-reading only seems to cover NYC and it's area) helps keep the fey safe from humans. But as it lacks a King or Queen (that they know of) it wouldn't be considered seelie or unseelie.

Thoughts?

Re: The General OOC Chatting Thread

Okay, I will thinks up another story arc.

There is the issue of the annual Library Thanksgiving dinner.

You see, many Fey folk do not have normal families.  Pixies don't even know how they come into this world.  (Some believe that crazy story about children's laughter creating Pixies, but then, Pixies will believe all kinds of silly things).

But, when these Human holidays roll around, many Fey see the Humans, and the bonds the Humans have with families, and they feel something missing.

So the Library has a tradition of holding a dinner for Fey Folk with nowhere else to go.

Every year, this dinner for the Fey Folk needs to be organized.

But you see what I did there?  Used "Fey" and "Organized" in the same sentence?

Those two words normally have nothing to do with each other.  This job is much, much harder than it sounds.  That's why every year the Librarians have to talk new volunteers into doing it.

Re: The General OOC Chatting Thread

Just another thought I had...

In every game, there are Player Characters, who are always up to something somewhere, and the many NPC's.

The NPC's are only around when needed for their part in the story, and fade away when not needed.  But when they are needed they can be very important.

Of course no one would want to run an NPC as a main character, because it means having nothing to do for months on end until the NPC is in a scene again.

But, if anyone wants to run an NPC as a second character, let me know.  NPC's would appear in one seen at a time, with a specific purpose from the GM (Me!) such as "Get the characters interested in this" or "tell them about..."

If you want an NPC running job, let me know.

Re: The General OOC Chatting Thread

I'm not sure what your are proposing. Is it a npc like Arna or Karl for a one shot, or more like an other Library member, one that doesn't adventure? Either case, it could be interesting, but I don't have idea for one right now  :)

My thought experiment on the gremlin origin prior to WWI (well other than being ex-goblin). They lived on clouds (like the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk) and didn't interact much with the ground-dwellers. They didn't care about the humans with silly balloons much, so they didn't show up to them. But when humans made machines "heavier than air" that could fly, the gremlins took it at an act of war. They try to retaliate, but those damn human where too fast, too many and, with time, made machine that are gremlin-proof. Having lost the war, many gremlins retreats to fairy land, like many other races.

Re: The General OOC Chatting Thread

My NPC idea is for useful and recurring characters that are partly "GM tools"- that is, characters used to advance the plot, provide information, etc.

They would have to be there just for that element of the story.

An example might be the library receptionist.  This character might know a lot of things, talk to anyone that shows up at the library, knows who is where and when, but doesn't do anything other than that.

Usually.

Violet has little control or awareness over her powers at the moment, but I think they lend themselves very well to the troll and grotto makeover... after all the Aes Sidhe are dwellers of mounds, underground palaces, so I think when she's actually IN the cave, ready to make it into a grotto, everything will just click and her instincts will kick in.

Re: The General OOC Chatting Thread

We're going to assume at this point that Johnny is yet another "issue" for the Library to deal with.  He is new to New York, having been drawn here because of the city's enormous and very anarchic "Indie" music community- there are plenty of clubs where you don't need any official documentation to play.  Anyone can play.  If you are good you can even get paid, in cash.

Being lured by the lights and excitement of the city, but being stuck with no home, no steady income, and no official identity in a world that demands it constantly, this is a common problem for Fey in New York.  Most of them learn, though, seek out the Morgan Library.  They'll help set you up, or connect you with someone who can.

And so, Johnny has been directed to the Morgan Library.

The club and music world and the Fey world in NYC have much in common and overlap.  For example, both have a whole language of strange runes and symbols which have deep meaning for them, yet are indecipherable to the general population.  The music culture tends to leave their's in the form of stickers stuck to various walls, doors, utility poles, etc, especially in the East Village area of Manhattan:

To accommodate new players and changes in cast, we are going to switch to two new scenes.

In "Luthraeg" a few of our intrepid Fey will pay a visit to one of the city's Unseelie.

In "A Night on the Town" characters will accompany the Troll Prince Dovregubbenson to see the Rockettes, and then, who knows.

Of neither are appealing, hang around the library and let me know, and other things are bound to turn up!

Re: The General OOC Chatting Thread

OK, the problem I see here is that I need to have a scene with Virana, while the Luthraeg scene is also needing me to be there. Would Virana and the GM be ok if we time-fudged it a bit? We could do the scene of their encounter, while at the same time they could post in the Luthraeg thread, and imply their meeting happened some time earlier. If we don't do it that way, then the Luthraeg scene would need to wait until Flea and Virana have finished, and I do not want to hold things up any more. I am pushing to ensure I get RPoL time to do updates at least once a day. I trimmed back on some games, but didn't want to neglect or leave here, as it is a great game, with some superb writers, and I want to ensure this is one of the couple of games I keep going.

Virana and GM: would that work for you? This way Flea and Virana can go right to the Luthraeg thread, and do their own meeting without having to rush.

I believe that the traffic would have little incidence on our commute as we are on foot; Either google includes it in its calculation, or we pass beside.

For the snow, base on my experiences in Montreal, it would be between no effect for light or already plowed, and doubling our time for fresh heavy snow or ice.

After a heavy snow there is some increase in foot travel time in Manhattan.  This is because the plows create snow barriers along the curbs, but then only a relatively narrow gap through the barrier is cleared for pedestrians to cross at intersections.

The snow in the story was unnaturally quick, but not heavy enough to cause that.

Snow removal in New York is different.  From anywhere.  It's not deeper than Green Bay, but it's run like a massive military operation.  More than 500 snow plows, plus front end loaders, dump trucks and snow melting trucks go to work.  Canadians have the same equipment, but no one else has so much of it, because New York has a different problem.  There is no place to dump snow.  So it all has to get melted or moved to the river and dumped there.

Or like earlier today, my brother came over for me to help him with a trans cooler line, we get it replaced then the other one starts leaking at the fitting on the transmission, put an extra o ring to get it to seal and it stops, until my brother is trying to put a holding bracket back on then the line suddenly pops out, so we pull the fitting to possibly replace it, only to find that non of the local part places have it in stock, so we reinstall it, hook the line back up and try it, and no leak.

My first guess, because both computers are affected, is a malware (that Mcaffee can't detect...). Try with a free antivirus. I use Avast, because AVG wanted more information that I wanted to give, but I didn't try other yet.

My second guess is, by bad luck, both have faulty hardware: memory or hard disk. I don't have much experience with any tool that could help with that.

Checking in.  I certainly didn’t intend to be away from rpol this long, but life had definitely taken a rough swerve.  I’m okay.  But, I am the person everyone else counts on.  I am the rock.  And that is hard.  It drains energy.  Sucks it right up like a great emotional Shop-Vac.  I am not leaving rpol, though, I will be around and post when I can.  Maybe things will calm down, re-stabilize somehow.

The restart I have planned will involve the Fey dealing with a mystery and a common danger:  Somehow, the Veil has completely overtaken several Fey folk, robbing them of their Fey identity entirely, leaving them to live their lives as the mortals they pretended to be.
Of course with Faeries, nothing can ever be truly required, but the crisis will provide an overall plot driver.

Heh, more or less for me.

I've had this game on my list for a long while now, ended up RTJing when the GM considered making a final run... December 2017, i believe?

Things were quiet for a while, and then GM was poking around to see who was still around, so i ended up applying.

Fun Fact: It's the same character i had planned to apply with back in 2017 XD

Just a general point.

It would be helpful if character descriptions included both the True appearance of the character, and what the character appears to be when disguised by the Veil.

Remember that the Veil tries to use the "easiest plausible solution", but can stretch when needed.

Well, i'm in uniform now, but generally speaking my appearance in both would be about the same, with hair covering my ears and usually a beanie of some kind.

Should you run into her during her offtime and on her skateboard, probably something like this:

With the added note that she does wear wrist and knee protectors, they're just under her clothes due to a sense of vanity.

If it's a college, with Alisa being a student herself she'll have an easier time blending in. A number of colleges offer courses for visiting students, so that could give her a reason to spend a day or two on the premises without attracting suspicion, should we go that route.

This update is copy/pasted to other games. I guess I am outing my alts. But this is not something I want to type over several times.

Had medical examinations internally yesterday. As some of you are aware, I have been fighting cancer the past couple of years. Well, the exploration revealed some nasty little polyps growing on the site where previously tumours had been. This could be entirely benign - a lot of people have this, and it is entirely fine and never causes any kind of problem. In my case, obviously, this is far more concerning. The doctors removed stuff from inside me, and it is being sent away for examinations. Until I get results of this (in a couple of weeks or so, I expect) I won't know for sure whether or not I'm having a relapse, and need more treatment. So I'm not likely to be at my best. I should still be here and posting away, but I would ask for a little patience if I seem a little sub-par when it comes to my posting.

And crossed fingers, prayers, and gifts of cake are all very much appreciated!

Ehhh.... We could, i mean we need to finish the current mission regardless. Alisa will have herself straightened out the following ingame day or so, but until she witnesses a major Veil event firsthand it'd be unlikely to disrupt how she's being affected by it like a human would.

Whether that means heading back to regroup or not is one thing, but we could just as easily say that Oscar and Flea went to keep an eye out, look for a fuse box or something, leaving me and Gremian at the literal wheel. In the meantime we could recruit, and meet up with the new people after they have gotten themselves acquainted at Morgan's?

Small note, as it's easy to miss: Alisa grew up with humans, so she has had practically zero exposure to the Faerie world, despite being a High Elf herself.
