Chapter 1: These Violent Delights Have Violent Ends
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

Star Wars

The Iron Dawn
Episode IV
Infinite Empire

A new hope has appeared in the galaxy. Striking from their hidden rebel base, the Rebel Alliance has destroyed the Galactic Empire's most fearsome weapon, the dreaded Death Star.

The Empire's wrath was swift, driving the Rebellion further and further out into the edge of the galaxy. Now, the war has arrived on the Outer Rim world of Pii IV.

The peaceful farmworld, home to a pair of heroes who battled the Empire in the distant past, is in grave danger as an Imperial Star Destroyer appears in orbit over the planet...

Chapter 1
The Adamant condensed as it dropped back into real-space. The Imperial-class Star Destroyer hovered over the green, lush world of Pii IV, a stark, ugly grey over the serene landscape.

"Report," Captain Plaats demanded, reaching his hand out to receive a datapad.

"No initial readings to report, sir," a junior officer said, looking over a computer system for clarification.

"Nothing at all?" Plaats asked.

"Farms, a few droids... We are getting one reading, sir," the officer replied, "but it shouldn't be anything. Plasma readings from something mid-sized, perhaps a freighter. No recent traces, so it hasn't been used in a while."

"I've been tracking rebels across the entire Mid and Outer Rim for months now," Plaats said.
"If there's a chance we finally have our prey, I intend to investigate." He turned to the stormtrooper sergeant who stood nearby. "Deploy a platoon, bring me any rebel sympathizers."

The sergeant nodded, and began heading down the gangplank toward the bridge's exit. Captain Plaats looked out over the large plastisteel windows at the green planet below. 50 million worlds, he thought. If one must burn to root out the rebels, so be it...

Chapter 1
Kibur popped his head up from the hood of the landspeeder he was repairing. The wind whipped across the shi'a grass, causing it to whistle. In the distance, he could see his children playing near the farmhouse. That wasn't the sound that alerted him, though. There was something else. A klaxon bell.

He froze. That could only mean one thing. The Empire. He rushed across the field, past the house.

"What is it, dad?" Mala, his daughter asked. He ignored her, running. He headed toward the barn, where he stepped inside and pushed aside a large pile of shi'a. Lifting a hidden hatch, he stepped down a ladder into a narrow hallway. The computer there was sounding the klaxon. He flipped on the screen and looked over the charts. A squadron of TIE-Fighters. A dropship. There was no time.

He pulled himself out of the hole, closed the hatch, and threw the hay back over the top.

When he arrived back at the farmhouse, he threw open the front door. "Irulan? Irulan!" he searched the house, trying to find her. The children followed him, asking what was wrong, but he had no reply.

Chapter 1
When Kibur entered the bedroom, he stopped. Irulan stood there in the darkness, her back to him. In her hand was an ignited lightsaber, its green glow crackling and pulsing.

She turned towards him. On her face was a look he had not seen in many, many years.

"How did they find us?" she whispered.

Chapter 1
"It's all my fault..." Kibur muttered. "No time, Iru. The point is, they're here. We need to go." He began shoving things into a bag. "We need to get far, far away form here." He opened his dresser and saw his lightsaber. He pulled it from the drawer with reverence. He hadn't touched it in years. There is no emotion... there is peace... He clipped the lightsaber onto his belt. "We need to go now!"

"Go?" Irulan followed him as he continued to pack. "And how exactly do you plan to do that? We have no way off this planet."

Chapter 1
Kibur led Irulan and their children out of the house. As they stepped out onto the porch, an Imperial Dropship Transport settled on the ground, only a 50 yards away. Imperial Stormtroopers poured out. Twenty in all. Kibur looked back at his family. "Run!" He shouted, pointing toward the barn. "Now!" As they bolted, he ignited his lightsaber, falling back but facing the Imperials.

Chapter 1
Irulan grabbed Mala's arm, and broke into a run. Torin was ahead of them.

When they were almost to the barn, Irulan felt a blaster bolt graze her shoulder.

"Get inside!" she yelled to the children. She whipped around, igniting her lightsaber, and deflected two more bolts.

"Kibur!"

Chapter 1
Kibur stumbled backward into the barn, slamming the door behind him. He rushed over to a pile of grass and pushed it aside, revealing a hatch. "Let's go."
The children clambered down inside, and Kibur gestured for Irulan to follow. "I've been working on something. In my free-time."

Chapter 1
Irulan dropped down the hatch, and haltingly walked forward. A durasteel door slid open, and she took in a sharp breath.

Inside was a cockpit.

Her fingertips brushed over the seats, the control panel. All so very familiar.

She turned to Kibur, her face shining.

"But... it was destroyed. How did you...?"

Chapter 1
"I've been working," he replied. "For the last ten years or so. I think the Empire picked up on its signal." He strapped into the pilot's seat. "You might want to strap in too." He flicked a switch, turning on the intercom throughout the ship. "Children! Seatbelts!"

Flipping a few more switches, the ship roared to life. He could hear pounding on the hatch above as the stormtroopers attempted to force it open.

"Gonna be a bumpy ride," he said, pulling back on the throttle.

The ship ripped through the barn, throwing debris everywhere. The stormtroopers still outside were thrown to the ground as the building exploded.

Chapter 1
Irulan clung tightly to the sides of her seat. Looking down, she saw a squadron of soldiers move in towards their home. Moments later, the farmhouse was burning, the smoke blackening the landscape.

She swallowed, fighting her grief. This place... the place they had raised their children. The place they had finally found peace. All of it, destroyed in a moment.

They would never be able to go home.

Chapter 1
Kibur could sense Irulan's sorrow. "I'm so sorry. I..." He paused, looking down at the controls. "I'll fix this." He opened the com system after punching in a few buttons.

"Iron Crew, this is Brightsaber. If you can hear this, meet at Rendezvous Seven. This is a Class I emergency signal." He turned to Irulan as the ship began to break atmosphere. "Begin astrogation, hon. We're nearly..." He froze as the ship emerged into black space. The Star Destroyer Adamant loomed before them.

A compliment of TIEs, at least two squadrons poured from the bottom of the battleship, streaking toward the Iron Dawn.

"Damn..." Kibur muttered.

Chapter 1
Without a word, Irulan leapt from her seat and ran out of the bridge to the gun turret.

She slid into the seat and grabbed the controls, swinging sideways until the first line of TIE fighters were in her sight.

She focused her mind so that Kibur could hear her. Just say the word...

"Light 'em up, Iru!" Kibur shouted. He banked hard to port, dodging the first swarm of TIEs. He rapidly punched in a series of coordinates, hoping his calculations were correct.

"Your numbers are all wrong, dad," Mala said, sliding into the seat next to him. "You focus on flying, I'll do the math." She got to work, furiously typing.

Chapter 1
One fighter was coming directly at them. Irulan aimed, took a deep breath, and squeezed the triggers. The orange bolts shot ahead of them, and the fighter burst into flames, spiraling out of control. She exhaled, then spun to the left and fired at the next oncoming ships.

Then a bolt struck the side of the ship, and she clung on tightly.

"There's too many of them! Get us out of here!"
