Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
"Judder!" Eliana's shriek rang out across the hanger bay.

She stumbled, tripping on the body of a fallen fighter. His arms were slender, wiry, like her son's. Eliana sucked in a sharp gasp and pulled herself up, struggling to breathe through the panic that pooled in her chest.

Her eyes met Irulan's, and she saw her own fear mirrored in her friend's eyes. "We told them to stay with the ship."

Eliana raced across the bay to the Iron Dawn, and in three frantic sprints she was up the ramp and inside.

"Judder!" she shouted again.

Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
Inside the Iron Dawn, the ship was empty. Chairs were tipped over, drawers pulled out with their contents scattered. The control panels throughout the ship had been blasted apart.

Out in the hangar bay, the crew could hear blaster fire coming from deeper within the base.

Kami'atra's gauntlets seemed to glow in bright white ethereal energy as he took a defensive stance yet adavanced forward slowly toward the direction of echoed blaster bolts.

Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
Eliana jogged down the ramp and took up a position beside her husband. She pulled out her blaster pistol and glanced at him, her cheeks flushed, eyes bright. Judder could hold his own in a firefight, Alan had seen to that. She would find their son alive.

"Let's go."

Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
As the group moved toward the large blast doors leading into the base, the doors slid wide open. Standing in the doorway stood three large stormtroopers in dark grey armor. They each stood one and a half times as tall as any of the heroes.

Armed with large, imposing blaster rifles, they raised them and unleashed hell, firing on the heroes.

Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
Irulan's lightsaber crackled to life. It whirled and spun through the air, becoming a blur of green as she deflected blaster bolts.

But they were too many, and too fast. One narrowly missed. The next one grazed her arm.

She rolled behind the cover of a speeder, sheathing her lightsaber, she pulled out her blaster.

Alan grabbed Eliana by the forearm pulled her around behind Durasteel containers and took cover from the trooper's Blaster fire.

"I'll draw their fire and try to take the left flank. Cover me." Alan said, then  he bolted across the room to the next support pillar.

Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
In this moment, Kami'atra felt as though it had been an eternity since he had skirmished with such mechanized soldiers; even so, he was reminded of a story his father used to relate to him and his siblings about a young man who toppled illustrious giants with nothing more than a sling and a few stones gathered from a river bank.

A smile creased his lips as he leapt forward between the nearest dark armored trooper and his sister, who now found partial cover behind the durasteel crates of the hangar bay. The repetitive flash of their blaster rifles caught Kami'atra slightly off guard, yet he continued to bring his hands up to absorb or otherwise dissipate the hot energy of each shot. One trooper's shot blazed just past his left ear, but fortunately only singed the wrappings about his head.

He found surer footing and began to change his tactic toward the offensive; instead of absorbing the shots fired, Kami'atra exhaled sharply and tensed every muscle of his upper torso and extremities. . . Refocusing his energies, the blaster bolts began to be deflected back toward their origins. So powerful were the bolts from these sinister troops that it was difficult to direct the flow of their return trajectory; none of the reflected bolts hit their intended Imperial targets, but it made it clear that he would soon need to change his tactics once again. . . As Kami'atra contemplated bringing the fight into closer proximity, he was able to focus his concentration enough to reflect two bolts back at their origin. One shot struck the nearest trooper in the left shoulder pauldron and the second arced deftly into the lateral knee of the middle soldier; though the second buckled the troopers stance momentarily, neither seemed to even draw much attention aside from causing the middle trooper a moment of pause between his barrage upon this crew.

One of the Dark Troopers turned and unleashed a swarm of blaster fire. Kibur blocked the shots, causing them to glance away. He wasn't quick enough, however, and one bolt hit him in the side, knocking him to the ground.

"No!" Irulan jumped out from behind the speeder that was her cover and ran towards Kibur, deflecting further shots. She dragged him behind some durasteel crates then looked at his wound. "Kibur, talk to me...."

She glanced out at the troopers and shook her head. They were too powerful.

Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
Alan had only just made it to the pillar at Troopers flank before seeing Kibur fall in the corner of his eye.

"Nooo!" Alan yelled as pivoted out and let loose a lethal barrage from his repeater, hitting each Trooper once but not enough to take them down.

As they returned fire Alan slung the repeater to his back and tossed two grenades at the feet of the troopers.

Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
Setting aside the sudden injury the Kibur had just incurred, Kami'atra quite literally leapt upon the chance that Alan's grenade had afforded; moving slightly closer to the troopers that had been thrown by the blast as if tossed by a child at play, though careful not to arrive within the blast radius of a potential self-destruct detonation, he extended his hands toward the two droids and stretched forth with his keen senses. . .

Suddenly, with a slight twitch and extension of all his fingers, Kami'atra severed the remaining connections between the droids' central computational circuit boards and the rest of their motivators, not unlike the sudden quadriplegia and loss of consciousness in any sentient humanoid. One dark trooper shifted itself with one last jerky motion of all four limbs before lying motionless, while the other did not move at all as if the initial grenade blast had already finished the task.

Now finding himself at the right flank of the remaining dark trooper across the hangar bay from Alan, Kami'atra retrained his focus upon defending Irulan's exposure while she tended to Kibur's wound. "Stay strong, my brother, this too shall pass. . ." projecting his thoughts over the skirmish din.

Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
The Dark Trooper turned its focus to Kami'atra, raising its heavy repeating blaster.

The Dark Trooper exploded into shrapnel. Turning, the group could see a Firespray-31 hovering in the entry to the hangar bay. Through the cockpit window they could see the Ubese who Page fought earlier in the day.

Alan smiled as he watched the Dark Trooper reduced to scrap. Page brought his gaze up to their fire support, the Ubese that appeared to hold no hard feelings for their previous sparring match, he offered the pilot a casual salute.

Alan made his way back to Eliana and led her to the group over Kibur.

"Kam, as soon as he's stable we gotta find the kids and get out of here." he said, as he secured another pair of grenades to his belt.

Chapter 3: The Gauntlet
A cold fist clenched around Eliana's heart.

"What do you mean, not here," she said. "Not on this base?" she wrapped her arms around herself and forced her voice to remain steady. An image of the troop transports exiting the hangar just seconds before they'd returned haunted her mind. "Or not on Arda I at all?"
