OOC: Table Talk 1

Hello all. I go by Athan on RPOL and most places. I've actually only been playing D&D (and only 5e for that matter) for a little over a year now, but I jumped in head first and went deep right away. I've been in a lot of games since then, and have began to run my own as well, which is going well. It's a huge part of my life now, which is better because of it.

Anyways though; when this game gets going (which will likely be a while I know) I'll likely be playing a warlock, partially because it is the only class I've never played at all before. I also have a pretty good/interesting idea to use for it as well, so it is exciting.

I look forward to playing with you all. I haven't decided on much of anything about my character's background yet though, so if anyone would be willing I always enjoy building shared backgrounds together; I'm Tancred's half-brother in a another game lol. I find shared backgrounds and relations really go a long way to make the game feel more personal, and gives those involved a sense of accountability as well.

OOC: Table Talk 1

Hiya everyone!  I've been gaming for a while now, some tabletop but mostly online,  I'm a disabled mother of two sons, ages 18 and 11, and have gamed on this site with Tancred for a while now ... thinking at least four years.  This is my creative outlet and I too enjoy combining backstories whenever possible.  I submitted a couple of ideas, rogue and cleric ... the roles I tend to play most, but am always willing to shift around in case the party needs something.  Tancred will likely tell you I can have some truly ditzy moments and it's all true but I redirect well.  I'm looking forward to gaming with you and thank you so much for giving me a spot!

OOC: Table Talk 1

Hi Everybody.  I go by bonni56 on RPoL.  I haven't played 5e much but am willing to learn.  I have some experience with other editions of D&D as well as some other games.  I have gamed with Tancred for only a short time when we fell to the "GM disappeared" syndrome so was glad to see that another chance to learn 5e opened up.  I play every other week in a "face to face or tabletop" group and we switch what we play periodically.

I hope to play female dwarf which is optimistic.  You can't keep a good dwarf down you know.  I usually play clerics but am open to other classes also.  I noticed Searcher that you like to play clerics too.

Wow, looks like Tancred helped recruit most the cast lol. Is he getting some sort of commission bonus?

Haha, anyways though. I know there's a lot of overlap with players of 5e on RPOL, so if any of you recognize the following names give me a shout-out; Aarken Donahue, Vahn'Galen, Marhius Marcellus, Adrien the Aarakocra, Nathak Brightheart Vathunigo, Garsenia 'Weedwhacker' Vineswinger, Ace Donahue, River Augusto Romero, Kerri'gan Haldorai, Karliah Culver, Griffith the Lost Druid, Sylvar Elro, Papal Greene, or Johan Grisson.

Sadly I don't seem to have had the pleasure of gaming with you here on rpol, Athan.  None of those names are familiar.  :(

Bonni, I think you playing a dwarven cleric would be awesome.  I love the rogue class too much but a lot of games I've been in, no one wants to be the healer and I don't mind.  I could also be convinced to play a bard.  I believe Tancred most likely remembers Isa for the little bit we got to play.

Sadly I do not think I have not had the pleasure of playing with any of you except for Tancred yet.  Of course that means we can blame him for stuff right?  (ducks the flying tankard)

I do love to play clerics.  Partly because they can fight and partly because they can heal.  Not to mention that most people like to keep them alive since they are the healer.  Self preservation is good at times.  LOL.

I have only played in one 5e PbP and I have not run across any of those characters before.

Clerics are my favorite as well for the same reasons. They sort of operate as fighters but also have useful protection spells and the ability to turn undead. I pretty much always end up playing clerics, which as it turns out is not a bad tendency to have, because it's usually like pulling teeth to get one in a game.

On the flip-side, I have DM'd and played in cleric-less games and it is possible to operate without them, it just makes it more tenuous situation for all involved. Doesn't look like we'll have that issue in this game.

Re: OOC: Table Talk 1

Sorry for the belated introduction! I was solo parenting this morning.

32 years old. Father of two (5 and 2). Canadian (but watching your election like a hawk), and a doctor.

I too come here on recommendation from Tancred, and I've played with Athan many times before.

I've been playing dungeons and dragons since I was 8. I remember THAC0 and saving throws against rod/staff/wand. I made the jump to 5th edition the day it was released and I haven't looked back.

I'm active in quite a few games on RPOL. Like Searcher this has definitely become my creative outlet.

I'm open to playing whatever the party needs, however all things being equal I was thinking I'd run with something I'd not played before, or seldom played. Druid, Sorcerer or Monk would be in the top three then as I've never played any of them. Warlock or Cleric would be in the next tier as I've only dabbled in those classes, but it seems like we already have players hoping to play those classes anyway!

Really looking forward to playing alongside everyone here!

Oh, on an unrelated note, from an N of 1 so far, Hawaiian DMs seem to be pretty darn awesome! You've got a heavy mantle to bear Shard, I'm sure my second Hawaiian DM will also rock ;)

Re: OOC: Table Talk 1

Clerics are cool, I once played a blue dragon Tempest cleric in a tabletop game, and it was awesome.

Bonni; I absolutely love both the rogue and the bard. Two of my favorite classes. I'd suggest that if Argent goes with Wizard, you go rogue, but if he goes archer or fighter we could use the awesome spellcasting powers of the Bard.

Also, if any of you who are new-ish to 5e would like any advice or have any questions, feel free to ask me. Even if I don't know the answer, I'll have fun finding it lol.

Holy cow Caduceus your name is Noah? I've played so many games with you and never knew that. Lol. Anyways though; always glad to have you in a game. If I may make a suggestion; I know you enjoy multiclassing, and two of those you haven't played before, Druid and Monk, make a great multiclass. Not to mention its one that's not done often, and its fun (to me) to think of why a character would be both. I had one for a while, Griffith, and he was awesome but unfortunately the game died.

I've only played a sorcerer once, and I haven't gotten very far with her yet. My impressions of the class so far are; meh.

Well, I will do my best to uphold the tradition of the Big Kahuna!

But it should be noted I am not Hawaiian...just live here. I was born in Los Angeles, lived there for 24 years. Left for Air Force basic training and since then have lived in Mississippi, Nebraska, Korea, New Mexico and now Hawaii. Who knows where the adventure will lead next?!

Interesting thought, Athan. I wonder how that would work with Wild Shape and Unarmed Strike. Time to put my thinking hat on.

OH!  DM I meant to mention before ... my older son just started college this August and is studying atmospheric science.  He has wanted to be involved with weather since kindergarten and is now chasing his dream ... wanting to chase tornadoes a bit too but says once he gets married and has a family that will cease.  He's hoping to one day be the next Jim Cantore with the Weather Channel.  :P

Re: OOC: Table Talk 1

Hi Caduceus!

I'm glad that Bards are mentioned as well as Monks.  I almost decided to make a monk character but the lure of playing a Dwarf was too much and I didn't want to play a Dwarven Monk.  Although I could REALLY have fun with that!   I can tell that I'm going to love gaming with this group.  You are already getting great inspiration from you all.

Of course you know that there isn't any rule that says we couldn't have an all spellcasting party.  If you're running with Dwarves, you should know now that there isn't anything  wrong with a lot of clerics.  For some reason people take exception to what we say and want to fight us.  It's not our fault.  REALLY it isn't.   :)

Can you imagine a cleric/Bard combo?  If order to heal you have to sing all your spells?  hehe
A Bard/Monk combo?  You are your own best advertisement.  Tell your tale like it SHOULD be told.

hehe

Oh my!  I needed that giggle.  All my projects this afternoon deal with excel sheets.  Sigh.  :)

Re: OOC: Table Talk 1

Hello, all,

Had some things to do today, so I am a little late to the party. Looks like everyone found the free bar and got started without me, so no worries! :)

I think that I have gamed with everyone on the board at one time or another, and it's great to see old and new friends here. I guess that kinda makes me the lowest common denominator, or some such. I dunno -- I'm not a math or numbers guy -- that would be Rob. So what am I, Rob? Errrr . . . no, wait -- don't answer that! :)

My gaming roots go way back. Like Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, I came to D&D by way of war-gaming -- the old Avalon Hill board games, to be precise. Back in the day, I rolled with German panzer-grenadiers across the steppes of Russia, trudged towards Waterloo with other grognards who shouted "Vive L'Emperor!", and I now understand why General Lee had difficulties at Gettysburg.

I never got into the very early editions of D&D -- it doesn't work as a solo game, and I never found anyone else in my neighborhood who was interested in it. 2e was my first edition, and I've tried every one since then. I think that 5e is my favorite, although 3.5e was very cool when it was first introduced.

I'm pretty flexible with respect to the race and class that I play. To some extent, I wanted to hold off until I saw how my fellow-players were leaning. BTW, Bonni, I think that a female Dwarven cleric is way cool -- I've been in parties with lots of Dwarves, but no females! :)

I'm leaning towards an Elven Ranger, in part because WOTC has recently tweaked the Ranger core class (in "Unearthed Arcana", on-line), and I'm curious to see how it plays. It isn't really the same as a splat-book variation, since it is intended as a revision to the core class (my understanding is that it will eventually make its way into future editions of the PHB). I'll need to talk to Shane and see if he will allow the revision, in-game. Plus, a campaign set in and around Icewind Dale sounds like fertile ground for a Ranger. :)

Re: OOC: Table Talk 1

In reply to Caduceus (msg # 15):

While a Kung fu kangaroo is pretty awesome, I don't think that beast's melee attacks actually count as unarmed strikes. IT would be up to DM discretion.

Of more use is Unarmored defense. Being able to add WIS (already a primary Stat for druids) to your beast shape's AC is an awesome boost and shores up one of the main weaknesses of several shapes. Should be noted that it is not meant to stack with natural armor (but is better anyways).

There's also a monk in the SCAG that basically gives you a kamehameha as a potential ranged attack, which should also work in wild shape and turn you into a lazer cat.

No offence Tancred but if you haven't partied with a female Dwarf then you haven't partied AT ALL!  :)  I am now the Dwarf and you are now the Elf.  What's wrong with that picture?  LOL.  I shall endeavor to enlighten you on the finer points of female dwarves.  I'm sure they must have some...somewhere.

Very good possibility I'll play a dwarf as well, whether I go Monk or Druid (or both as Athan suggests).

I figure I'll just go human variant to get a feat at the beginning.  Of course half-elf wouldn't be so bad or even Aasimar.

Those are good options Searcher.  I love playing Half Elves.  Aasimar would be interesting.

Woo hoo!  I shall keep my eyes open for another Dwarf.  That way I can at least have a good drinking partner (although she doesn't always drink liquor...she's complicated although some might just say strange).

Would not have guessed that for a cleric :)

I was going to propose a shared family tie, but I think I'd like to play the outsider hill dwarf far from home in the Frozenfar.
