6. The Carnival
[Aleta and Breaks-the-Chains]

Breaks-the-Chains was able to dedicate the spear to herself so that it vanished in her human form and looked like a tattoo on her right arm.

It felt strange for just Aleta and Breaks-the-Chains to be traveling alone as they set out for the sept. They traveled on Aleta's bike as Firefly led them in a roundabout way toward their destination. Aleta noticed that they seemed to be looping back on themselves and going over the same ground twice. When she asked Firefly about this, the spirit replied that they had to make sure they weren't followed. This sept was very secretive; leading the wrong people to it would be disastrous. Firefly would not or could not elaborate.

Two weeks later, just as dusk was approaching, Firefly suddenly stopped in the middle of nowhere. Aleta knew they were somewhere in the Appalachians, but didn't know much more than that.

"More Garou have been called to assist you," Firefly explained. "They are or will be here."

Parking the bike a bit off the road, under some cover, Aleta and Breaks found themselves entering an abandoned carnival. Trees and brush had overtaken everything; very little was left standing. A small roller coaster was overgrown and partially collapsed (http://media.galaxant.com/000/...sktop-1406690165.png). A kiddie ride had rusted out leaving a creepy smiley face to greet them (http://media.galaxant.com/000/...sktop-1406690173.png). The only thing that remained of the Funhouse was the front wall (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pini...b88715d93e62a582.jpg). The only standing structure was a building of some sort in the shape of a devil's head (http://media.galaxant.com/000/...sktop-1406690169.png). Mostly hidden by the trees and bushes was a giant head and chest that was tied to the ground with ropes that were frayed and worn(http://media.galaxant.com/000/...sktop-1406690198.png).

Samuel Clark

The next place that Samuel planned to visit was the Norris Museum of the Appalachians. It was supposed to have a carving of a winged wolf- the only artifact of its type that he had heard about. It was nearly dusk, but Samuel guessed he'd reach the tiny motel he had registered at in less than an hour. That was when his car began to shudder and shake. Samuel's encouragement and curses had little effect; a few yards later, the car shuddered to a halt.

From his car, he could make out some structures, but it wasn't until he got out that he realized that he was in the middle of nowhere at an abandoned carnival. Trees and brush had overtaken everything; very little was left standing. A small roller coaster was overgrown and partially collapsed (http://media.galaxant.com/000/...sktop-1406690165.png). Braden Riscal

The opportunity to do an internship for the Park Service along the Appalachian Trail was one that Braden couldn't pass up. And so he found himself and his faithful, though unreliable truck driving down an unmarked road that didn't appear to be on his map. As dusk approached, he pulled off the road to stretch his legs and study his map again. Surprisingly, he found himself next to an abandoned carnival.

Braden might have ignored the carnival, but there was a tiny light floating through the air. A light that he had seen before, although he couldn't quite remember where. It was heading toward the devil's head building; he automatically took a few steps in its direction before wondering if he should just be on his way.

6. The Carnival
Muraco Snow

He had been on the run all day ever since the motorcycle rider in black had shown up at the restaurant. The owner had been good enough to let Muraco work off a meal by doing the dishes. Muraco had been putting the garbage out when the black rider had pulled into the diner on a practically silent motorcycle. If that hadn't made Muraco suspicious, the fact that the man had a pair of some kind of small submachine gun or large automatic guns hidden under a long coat clinched it.

Muraco dropped the garbage bag, crept back into the diner long enough to grab his guitar, then raced out into the woods. Taking on his lupus form, Muraco ran off, planning on losing the man quickly. Muraco had barely gone a half mile when he smelled gas and metal on the wind. He circled around to find that the black rider was somehow following his trail.

He tried unsuccessfully to enter the spirit-world even though it would be a dangerous place this time of the month and this time of the day. When that didn't work, he ran on.

Despite being able to run all day, Muraco was starting to get tired. His wolf-instincts told him to go to earth, to hide and rest, but if the black rider had been able to follow him this far, hiding might not work.

Then, as dusk fell, Muraco realized that he wasn't running alone. A tiny firefly was keeping pace with him. The insect spoke to him in a clear voice. "Follow me." It then veered off in a different direction.

Braden was excited!  This was far better than some boring class room assignment.  Every bump along the trail could be felt, whether it just shifted his weight a bit or actually jounced the seat.  The old truck would get him where he needed to go but it certainly was useless for picking up girls.

Once at the carnival sight he had to give the map another scrutinizing glance.  It was old and messed up but woudn’t it still have been mentioned at some point? It was kind of big to hide!  Maybe it was like some welcoming joke to the internship? Like college kids got for initiation rights?

He was about to head to the rollercoaster as curiosity nipped at him but then there was that floating light.  What?  He took a step towards the rollercoat but then looked back at the light. A small shake of his head, running a hand through that red hair and puzzling at the light.  Well, if he just stood there it was going to eventually go away.

That decided it! Braden picked up his pace, first a good stride walk but then he decided to jog to catch up to the thing.

6. The Carnival
Sam hopped out of his vehicle and popped the hood on his Jeep.  Smoke wafted up from the engine, a sign that odds were whatever needed fixing was well beyond his limited ability to repair.  He stifled a curse closed the hood with a slam, sending birds squawking into the evening air.

Of course the piece of shit has to die on me right next to the oh so very creepy carnival.

Sighing, he opened his bag and reached for his satphone.  However as soon as he touched it, there was a loud sparking noise and the damn thing refused to turn on.  This time he doesn't bother to stifle the curse.  Throwing the bag back into the jeep with a snarl, he looked over the rusted out shell of an amusement park.

Well I guess I've got no choice but to see if I can find an old landline or something.  Better than sitting here on the road and hoping someone passes by

With another sigh he began his slow trek into the creepy park.

Aleta and Breaks-the-Chains
Breaks/lupus

Once she got used to it, Breaks enjoyed traveling via motorcycle. It was much more fun than riding in a car.

At the carnival, Breaks looked around to make sure no one was there, then shifted into her preferred lupus form. She stayed close to Aleta as they started to explore the grounds.

"What kind of place is this?" she asked Aleta. "And why do they have a building of a man tied to the ground?"

6. The Carnival
Braden

The entire area was overgrown. Except for some graffiti, it didn't look like anyone had been here for years. As he started to follow the tiny light, Braden was reminded of a story that his grandmother used to tell him. She said that lights like that were will-o-wisps that lured travelers off the path and into quicksand.

It wasn't a magical floating light, Braden decided. It was a firefly- not an unusual sight at this time of day. Unlike most fireflies which tended to flit around randomly, this one seemed to have a particular destination in mind. It flew straight into the devil's headed building (http://media.galaxant.com/000/...sktop-1406690169.png). When Braden reached the entrance, he saw that it was a House of Mirrors. He could see the light of the firefly flickering and reflecting off numerous mirrors as it made its way further inside.

Samuel

There was something strange about the creepy park. Maybe it was because it was dusk, maybe he was just really tired, but for a moment, it looked like there was another image superimposed over what he was seeing. Samuel saw the shadow of additional buildings, he heard the echo of a barker crying "Step right up", and would have sworn he smelled popcorn. A moment later, the echoes were gone and Samuel had to ask whether he had sensed anything or not.

Samuel started walking around, trying to guess where phone booths might have been set up. He worked his way through brush and over debris to where the head and torso of the giant man laying (http://media.galaxant.com/000/...sktop-1406690198.png). The thing was huge; the wagon next to it was normal sized. As he tried to decide what it might be made of, one of the eyes twitched.

Sam shook his head in an effort to clear his mind.  This wasn't the first time he'd encountered this sort of phenomenon.  Ever since that dream with the raven he'd been seeing things.  It was like that glimpse of something familiar that you'd catch out of the corner of your eye; yet the moment you turned towards it, it was gone. He still didn't know what to make of it, only that it had been happening with alarming regularity as of late.

As he approached the giant man tied to the ground, he couldn't help shake the sensation from before.  Something was... off.  Then he saw something that made him almost leap out of his shoes.  One of the eyes, did it just move?!  Sam froze and stared intently at the giant, his entire body tense as he slowly approached the figure.

6. The Carnival
Somewhere in the back of Braden's mind some part of him tried to warn him this was unusual and potentially dangerous.  He was too curious and excited at the bit of curiosity to bother with listening to any notion of danger.  It looked like a firefly but it was moving totally wrong. It was highly unlikely but imagine how cool it would be if he discovered some new sort of bug! He wouldn't need to finish any college or worry about credits after that.

The mirrors were going to make it a bit harder to catch the thing, but that rather added to the fun.  Braden wasn't slowing down much, but a hand was in front of him to make sure he felt any mirror before jut slamming into it.

Samuel

The closer Samuel got to the giant, the more realistic it looked. The graffiti faded away, the cracks in the plaster(?) disappeared, and even the hair turned out to be made of individual strands rather than the absurd locks he had seen at first glance. The skin looked pliable and seemed to have pores. The eyes had a liquid glaze over them and sported individual eyelashes.

When the giant eye blinked, it was almost expected.

"Release me," it said in a deep voice.

Since Muraco knew that he was being chased any help would be welcome.  He had little choice but to trust the spirit for now.  He followed the little bug where ever it might lead.

6. The Carnival
[Braden and Muraco]

It became darker as soon as Braden entered the Hall of Mirrors, with only a little light coming from the entrance and the reflections from the firefly's light. It was enough light to navigate especially if Braden slowed down a bit and felt his way along the walls. Glass crackled under his feet since it only covered part of the walls.

At first it was easy to follow the firefly; there seemed to be only one path to take. Then he realized that the path forked- which was not something you usually found in old Halls of Mirrors. Still, it wasn't anything to worry about. The building wasn't a large one.

Braden paused as he noticed that one of the mirrors felt sticky. He watched his fingers dip into the surface of the mirror, then come out pulling a bit of the mirror like taffy. At the same time, he realized that he wasn't hearing the crackle of glass at his feet. The ground felt like it had some give to it; it felt like regular ground.

Meanwhile, Muraco followed the firefly as it dodged under bushes and around trees, flying through areas that would be difficult for anyone on a motorcycle to follow. After a few minutes, the pair entered the overgrown clearing that the carnival was in. They ran past the Fun House facade and straight toward the devil's head entry. Muraco saw a human figure enter the building ahead of him but it was too far away to make out any details.

The firefly headed straight through the devil's mouth.

Braden slowed down as it got darker, and taking more time to feel everything out,  That nagging sense was louder about this possibly growing more dangerous but then that got ignored.  Childish.  Of course it got darker in an abandoned building.  The dark and the mirrors with that little light was just an odd combination.

The sticky mirror gave him pause, his forehead scrunched up as he pressed against the mirror, pulled his hand back and repeated.  The ground changing was odd, but no where near as odd as the glass. His steps had slowed to hardly half a stride with each step.

"What the hell.." whispered to himself.

6. The Carnival
Sam watched as the giant came to life before him.  His response was fairly understandable, complete and utter confusion.  "What the hell?" he muttered as he approached even closer to the prone form.  Then it spoke, its deep almost gravely voice demanding that Sam free it.  That was enough to stop him dead in his tracks, an icy fear permeating throughout his body, sapping his ability to do anything but stare in utter shock.

Moments passed, seconds dragging on like hours.  It took the clarion caw of a raven to snap him out of his panicked stupor.  He had spent most of his adult life in the pursuit of the supernatural, now here was definitive proof!  It was not the time to shy away from the unknown, but to instead confront it head on.  He took one final moment to steel himself before squaring off with the... creature.  Very calmly, Sam looked it in the eye and asked.  "And why should I do that my friend?"
