1. Firefly's Rest
Today is: Friday, Sept 26th
Full Moon
Moonrise: 6:19pm
Moonset: 5:07am
Weather: Sky is clear, temp in the low 70s during the day, dropping to mid-60s at night.

The dreams had started nearly a month ago with only fleeting images remembered in the morning- a glowing light, a presence, a niggling feeling that that the dream had been important even though it had been mostly forgotten. It grew in clarity and strength until even the biggest skeptic had to accept that this was not a normal dream.

Even at its strongest the dream wasn’t very clear. The light was a firefly or a will-o-wisp or maybe a tiny fire spirit. It was calling the dreamer to follow it with, not a promise, but the possibility of something new, something that was also dangerous.

If Elders were consulted, they weren’t very supportive of the idea of trying to follow the dream. Opinions ranged from it being dangerous to foolish to the insistence that it was a false dream sent by agents of the Wrym. No one was stopped from leaving their home septs, however- although several had the impression that a more prominent or promising Garou would have been stopped.

Once the decision was made to leave, the signs were easy to follow: a glint of light off a window that held the eye for several seconds, a bit of sparkly ribbon that seemed to float in the air against the wind, a red piece of cloth that flapped furiously in the still air giving the impression that it was alive.

If nothing else, the signs were obliging. Those with vehicles found that they appeared on the road, the wolf-born never had to deal with cities or anything but minor traffic, and when the Garou finally had to sleep, the signs were there again when they woke.

Eventually, the trail led to West Brookfield, a small mill town in Massachusetts. It was sparsely populated, but on a main route so there was a fair amount of traffic. It had the usual amenities: a gas station, Cumberland Farms mini-mart, fire station, elementary school, and small town hall, but the signs led to none of these. Instead, it ended at an old textile mill on the edge of town. http://www.textilehistory.org/.../Wamsutta_Mill_1.jpg

The building was all brick; its many windows either bricked or boarded up for decades. There were some signs that it wasn’t completely abandoned. The windows on the south side of the third floor were open; light and music flooded out. There was also a new sign on the front of the little attached building proclaiming it “Firefly’s Rest”. The bulletin board advertised music every weekend and listed its association with Hostelling International ($30/year membership or $3/night lodging).

The small building in front was in poor repair and mostly gutted, but the signs pointed to an entrance in the base of the tower. There was a new door there and the stairway in the tower had been cleared of rubbish (although there was plenty on the first and second floor beyond the stairs).  The third floor opened up to an entryway. The fourth floor of the tower was off limits.

On the third floor, to the left were dorm-style rooms with bunk beds. To the right and center was an open dance floor and stage where nearly 100 teenagers danced, talked, and hung out. Old chairs, benches, and random tables were scattered around the dance floor. The band seemed to be a local one; what it lacked in ability, it made up for in volume.

There was a station to get drinks- no alcohol was served, although from the behavior of the crowd, there was apparently plenty to go around. There were other places to check out- many doors and hallways on the left side of the buildings weren’t being used, there were also several unlabeled doors in the center of the building.

OOC: Please stay in this thread; just put a note at the top of your post saying where you are (Dance floor, dorm room, outside, etc). I’ll send you each a private message letting you know where you are starting. Add in any pre-mill information you want.

1. Firefly's Rest
Dance Floor

Dru walked along the edges of the throng, feeling as if she was still in a dream. The road that had led her to this place, out on the edges of a nowhere town in Massachusetts, had been a long one. This was the first time she had stretched her legs in a few hundred miles, and she relished the opportunity to move about, even in these surreal circumstances. There was no mistaking the name of the place - she was meant to be here. But why? What had drawn her here, and what did it have planned for her?

She bobbed her head to the thrumming beat of the music. She appreciated that they had a live band instead of a DJ spinning; they might not be great, but at least they had something resembling taste. Not too shabby, West Brookfield. Okay, I guess I'll hang around a little longer.

Dru scanned the crowd as she made her way along the edge of the dance floor. It was a pointless reflex; every face was that of a stranger. But maybe she'd at least find someone she could stand talking to. She didn't know much about mill towns, but she knew small towns. The accent might change but the language was the same.

She stepped up onto a bench and over it, ignoring the complaints of the guy and girl who were sitting on it, and walked over to the drinks station. She dug deep into her jeans pockets and fished around the loose change for the few crumpled bills she was carrying - change from the last gas station, back in Pittsburgh - and nodded at the guy serving. "Gimme one of those cans of Monster," she said. "The band doesn't suck too hard, huh?"

The guy at the table beamed at Drusilla, "I'll tell 'em you said that. They've been practicing and the price is right."

He got her a can from one of the coolers and handed Dru back some change. They weren't making any money on the drinks. Drusilla spotted a half dozen cases of soda and energy drinks stacked next to him as well as some big bags of candy bars, mints, and gum.

"First time here?," he asked. "Did you get the spiel from Kathy at the door?"

1. Firefly's Rest
[Outside in the woods- Lupus]

Breaks-the-Chains was lonely. The moon had shown all of her faces since the Garou had parted from her mentor. Points-to-the-Shadow had encouraged her to follow the strange dream that had plagued her, and after all that had happened, she was relieved to be doing something she knew how to do – hunt. She hunted the little spirit through the woods, avoiding the lights and sounds of civilization, not thinking about what would happen when the hunt was over.

But now she had the feeling she was not alone. The spirit was out of sight, somewhere up ahead, but she could sense something or someone nearby. Breaks-the-Chain eased herself up against a tree, holding still in the darkness, and waited.

1. Firefly's Rest
<Dance Floor; Homid>

Malik looked about, nervously holding onto the strap of the backpack he was wearing as he looked about. The music was so loud compared to what he was used to, and despite being surrounded by teens, it seemed like they were behaving oddly. It was strange to him, though not as strange as what had led him here. It had seemed so clear, but he had no idea exactly why he was here, or even what he was looking for.

He stood looking about, as if trying to catch some glimpse of a possible familiar face in the crowd. It didn't seem to be much help though. He was a stranger in a strange land with no one to turn to. Disheartened, he kept towards the edge of the crowd of dancers and made his way towards the drink and snack station. After walking all day, he was eager to get something in his stomach.

Jesse walked straight into the crowd, still shaking off the last bits of road vertigo. He had been hauling straight here from Portland, Oregon, where he started to have the dreams. His MG had only overheated once, and then been fine to drive, afterwards. It was hard to discount the sense of fate drawing him to this place. Will I meet others like me, here? At last? he thought as he moved reflexively out of the way of someone trying to dance.

The band was trying hard, but it wasn't quite to Jesse's taste. He rubbed his eyes. He had stopped to Change last night, and he never got as much rest that way. He went up to a small group of people his age, and said, in his southern Louisiana accent, "My name's Jesse. From out of town. What's this band called?"

1. Firefly's Rest
[Outside in the Woods – Lupus]

It had been a long and lonely journey.  Chapparel had followed the light spirit for some months through forests, wetlands, plains, swamps, and the outskirts of human civilization.  At times Chapparel had grown to wonder if he had gone mad, chasing after lights.  He often grew despondent in the wilderness. No tribe, no pack, no family – was this the punishment for his failures - to wander Gaia alone and forgotten? What a cruel destiny.

And yet, he had continued on, and each time Chapparel grew his most desperate, the spirits had delivered him sustenance as he would stumble upon a rabbit or water-fowl, and once, an injured and isolated doe.  Chapparel always brought the creatures a quick and merciful end, and their nourishment, of both his body and his soul had been truly life-saving.

Over the past few days, something about the trail had changed; Chapparel sensed he was nearing either the end of his journey, or perhaps, an important fork in the path forward.  He was much closer to the humans than he had been at any previous point in his travels, and so it was utterly surprising when he caught the long-missing scent of another wolf. Upwind, but somewhere nearby! And moving in the same direction he himself was.  This brought Chapparel excitement, but also some anxiety – he desperately longed for social connections, particularly after being isolated for so long, not only on the long journey, but also among his previous sept. Yet meetings among strange wolves could often end in bloodshed.  He would have to be careful.

Chapparel slinked through the darkness cautiously. Sneaking up closer and circling downwind he could see where the large black wolf had slowed down and stopped next to a large tree.    Knowing better than to sneak up on a fellow predator, Chapparel began moving towards the other wolf more deliberately, making his presence more obvious. Keeping his body-language as neutral as possible, Chapparel attempted to refrain from appearing either too threatening, or too vulnerable.  With his ears raised, his brow relaxed, and his mouth slightly agape, he stepped into a patch of moonlight nearby the other wolf.

Dance Floor, Homid Form

Zoe was a very curious one. She'd follow a spirit into hell if it meant her learning more about the place. And this wasn't any different. She had tech spirits that lead her all the way to this place. Invading her GPS, her Phone, even her laptop. It was quite annoying at first but after she started heading the direction they wanted. She felt more calm about it and excited to find out what was at the end of the rabbit hole.

Entering the Dance floor of the building, the music was eh, it was not the punk she liked but at least it wasn't country about sad cowboys loosing there women and dogs. She looked down at her cloths and tucked in her shirt, rolled up her sleeves, made herself look a little more presentable. Not that a women with a shaved head with a black tattoo of a dragon wasn't about to stand out. She wanted to at the very least make sure she looked good. Zoe takes a minute to scan the area around her, trying to get a feel for the place.

1. Firefly's Rest
[Outside in the woods- lupus]

Breaks-the-Chains froze as the scent of another wolf reached her. She had to stop herself from leaping over to it- reminding herself that she was in someone else's territory. When the wolf stepped into the patch of moonlight, her hopes were raised that this was another of the Mother's Chosen. A lone wolf would never approach an intruder alone- the first reaction was always to call for the rest of the pack. Even if it was a wolf living alone, it wouldn't move into sight without showing its status.

She crouched down to make herself look less threatening, but couldn't hide her wagging tail and ears that twitched in excitement as she stepped away from her hiding place.

"I do not threaten your territory," Breaks said in the language of the Garou. "I am hunting. I do not want to fight."

1. Firefly's Rest
[Dance Floor - Homid]

It has been a long journey so far, the dreams and signs were constantly appearing to him. They were numerous but the Theurges that he talked to about it weren't as sure that it was important or needed to be looked into. They didn't stop him when he left and it felt as if some of them wanted him gone. It's how he felt is entire life.

He's been through cities and wilderness following the signs that came to him whether they be spirits or other signs. He traveled on foot, or paw, most of the time trying to conserve the little bit of cash he had, once he even took the advice of a Gnawer and train hopped.

The signs led him here and once here he caught sight of a girl wearing a shirt with a lion on it. A lion, it had been one of the things he'd seen repeatedly. He followed her onto the dance floor but lost her in the crowd. The music wasn't his taste and really the only clubs he has ever wanted to visit were the secret Garou and Kin only one that a Glass Walker told him about once, although the Ragabash may have been just telling tales to the other cubs at the time.

The people danced around him, constantly bumping into him. He resisted bumping back and turning the dance floor into a mosh pit, the humans couldn't handle a Garou mosh pit. Another bump and a blonde guy avoided him as he moved in response. He let out a low, short growl before making his way to the edge.

He couldn't spot the girl with the lion shirt and he realized that while he was intent on his 'hunt' he had forgotten to eat. His stomach growled. Jacob made his way to the snack station with a couple ones to get a candy bar to hold him over until he could get out and hunt later. He had to dodge around several people, including a bald girl with a dragon tattoo as he made his way to the snacks.

Once there he bought himself a couple candy bars, devouring the first in a coupe bites then savoring the second.

1. Firefly's Rest
[Outside in the Woods – Lupus]

Unsure of what to do in this situation, Chapparel was pleasantly surprised by the large black wolf’s response.  He sat down on his legs and stomach sphinx-like and his tail began to wag, mirroring that of the other Garou, as his tongue goofily rolled out of his maw.  “It’s not my territory” Chapparel admitted matter-of-factly.

“I am Chapparel of…” the Garou language was difficult to speak as it was, but his speech stumbled as Chapparel puzzled over how to introduce himself.   The confusion came evident upon the young wolfs face, as his head tilted. This had never been his responsibility in the past, and he knew not the proper customs.  Furthermore, Chapparel had not had a pack or sept for months, and despite his rearing, he was not officially a member of any tribe.  “…of…of… a distant place.” His tail wagged a little less strongly.

“I’ve been tracking something, a spirit I think, for quite some time, and it’s lead me here.  Perhaps I am meant to help you with your hunt?” The question jumped out of Chapparel filled with hope and yearning.

Breaks-the-Chain couldn't help herself, she bounded over to Chapparel looking like a puppy. She stopped less than a foot from him and leaned forward to sniff at him.

"I'm hunting a spirit too," she said excitedly. "Two hunters are better than one. This spirit is very easy to follow, but very difficult to catch. It looks like a little flying fire."

She paused as she remembered the speech she was supposed to give. "I am Breaks-the-Chains. I was born under this big moon and," her tail and head drooped, "am not a member of the Uktena tribe."

1. Firefly's Rest
[Dance Floor]
11:30pm

Malik found himself the object of some attention. Several heads turned his way, and one group of four young women dancing together gestured for him to join them.
***
There was only one person manning the snack station. He was currently talking with a young woman, leaning toward her so he could be heard over the band. The man stopped talking long enough to give Jacob an evaluative look, then get him the candy bars he asked for. The man leaned over to warn Jacob, "Remember, if you make any trouble here, you won't get back in. And this is the only place in the whole state like this." He had to speak loudly to be heard over the music, not because he was yelling at Jacob.
***
Jesse's polite greeting was met with two pair of widened eye; one young man took a step back, another pulled his girlfriend to stand behind him, she suddenly looked uncertain. The other young woman greeted Jessie with a smile.

She had to yell to make herself heard, "12-top. I'm Kara. Good to meet ya. I heard they called themselves that because they got turned down to play 11 gigs before this one." She laughed, "And they're not even getting paid here!"

"I'm gonna go get something to drink," the man pulled his confused girlfriend along with him as he headed to the snack table. The other young man mumbled something lost in the music and hurried after the first.
***
Zoe had just passed the table where a young woman who introduced herself as Kathy was monitoring the front door. Kathy had nodded appreciatively at Zoe's tattoo, then explained the rules, "No drinks or drugs inside. No fighting. If you get sick, there's a $20 charge. If you want a room, it's $23 and I'll give you a key for a locker. If you bring the key back when you leave, you get your $20 back."

1. Firefly's Rest
[Outside in the Woods – Lupus]

“Then it seems we hunt the same prey” Chapparel yipped happily; this was the best news he’d had in a long while.  Chapparel approached Breaks-the-Chains and returned her inquisitive sniffs with some of his own.  In the moonlight now he got a better view of her strong build and took note of the scarring spread about her cheek, chest, and paws. She was clearly a tough Garou, and born under the full-moon no less!

Yes, Chapparel quickly decided, Breaks-the-Chains would make a fine alpha.  He took a moment and more seriously huffed  “Breaks-the-Chains, I, Chapparel, was born under a sky without a moon, and so have no claim to lead.  I’ll follow you until one of our spirits leaves this existence, a mightier creature usurps your position, or…” Chapparel cringed slightly at this last option “you banish me from your presence”
