Chapter 1: Plaza
Tonight 1001 ghosts walk through the streets with a 1001 living residents sleeping happily inside, as was always the case in Plaza. Only the death of a resident or passing of a ghost opened up a spot for the long line of those who would love to live with Grandmother Bright's protection. Of course, Ixie was among that number, her own home, like many others, a rebuilt First Age wonder.

Grandmother Bright, however, as she often is, sits in a pagoda sipping tea in the center of Plaza. Even sitting the old woman's height is clear, standing near 9 feet tall, her elderly appearance giving off a soft faint glow. A man with deep blue skin leaves the hut, and she clearly seems pleased by whatever he's told her. His face conveys no such emotion, but he doesn't seem particularly upset either. The faceless golden men that serve Grandmother Brights very thoughts quickly fetch his dish, but then just as quickly begin replacing a fresh plate of sweets and cup of tea as the goddess spots her winged subject.

"Ah, Ixie," comes the voice, calling the fae-touched Solar to sit by her in the small pagoda. "How was the party? Tell me how the men and women in the city do outside Plaza fair."

Chapter 1: Plaza
Quixotic Quetzal had hurried back to the Plaza, though she'd actually been a little late in returning, given when such parties usually let out.  She had glided her way back part of the way, and even done a little roof-hopping as well, so, she'd definitely been in a hurry to get back. The cool night air felt nice through her hair and feathers...

When she arrived back at the Plaza she entered with a spring in her step, her mood elevating just from flying a bit - okay, gliding - but she still had a serious manner to her as she made her way to the aged and imposing Goddess's pagoda. The goddess was nearly twice her size, really - that she was kneeling down only really helped so much. When she was invited in, Ixie gently stepped inside and offered a respectful bow, her wings drawn in.

"I'm Back~!" She chimed in her perky tone, stepping over and sitting by the Goddess, folding her knees beneath her and giving her a foot or two of space, given her larger size. "Honestly, I wish you'd been able to go, it was an interesting party, but we could really have used someone as good with words as you are." She said softly, giving the elderly-looking Goddess a sad smile. "... Turns out there's a huge food shortage going on in town. You know me - I can't keep my nose out of things when there's people to help. I got Sashy and Lirin together, and a couple of others who seemed like they wanted to do some good, but really, it kind of turned into a big mess." She frowned. "Luckily, nobody actually got hurt. There was a big protest outside, but we managed to talk them down - but that doesn't solve the food problem. Lirin and Sashy went to talk to the Tri-Khan about it after the party. Apparently the food shipments are missing."

Ixie sighed a little, and tugged on one of her twintails, fussing with it and the band fixing it a bit after her flight back. Despite her upbeat tone, her stress was obvious - she was genuinely concerned, and had already made this her own problem. "I was thinking we could go look for it and see if we could find it? There are desert raiders and bandits out there, right?"

She paused for a moment, taking a sip of tea, then raising a finger. "Oooh! And there was a tribesman who wanted to help out by providing food for some of the people in need. He was asking where he should go, but I didn't... exactly know what to tell him, and I don't think the others really knew what to tell him either. I know the Plaza is ok, but... well, the city isn't."

Chapter 1: Plaza
The goddess listened like always, though even with all her years of living, Ixie never failed to surprise her. "Well it certainly seems like you made an impression at the party, which is exactly why I sent you. Actions say a lot more than words." She laughed as Ixie turned to her, asking about the desert raiders and bandits and dangers outside - not a cruel laugh, but a gentle one, like parent to child, "I don't know everything dear. But it could indeed be bandits. The Delzahn themselves are the largest group out there, but many defectors and outcasts form their own troupes as well. I can keep the plaza fed and no more, but that is exactly why I made sure to invite you here - you can serve as my eyes, my ears, my hands, and my wings outside of Plaza. In the newer parts of the city, while not entirely impoverished, are laborers and refugees - not all down trodden, but few would be able to feed themselves if what you say is accurate."

Though as Grandmother Bright spoke, she looked out of the small enclosed area the two sat on. "You failed to mention that you brought friends, Ixie. Or a friend, I presume, otherwise you trespass somewhere very dangerous," she said as she looked toward Seven-Folded Rose in Plaza's main street.

Chapter 1: Plaza
The huge woman wore lamellar armour that was of the finest mortal make and the hammer across the shoulders was clearly the weapon of an Exalt. She approached the area fearlessly but respectfully.

Chapter 1: Plaza
Ixie blinked a little, then hopped to her feet, covering he rlips with a wing lightly. "Oops~!" She gave a nervous little laugh, before bounding over and grabbing Rose by the arm, tugging her along to meet Grandmother Bright.

"This is Seven-Folded Rose. One of the ones who was there trying to help smooth all that over. Rose, this is Grandmother Bright~"
She chimed brightly, and flitted back over to where she'd been sitting, folding her legs and kneeling back down. "I'm sure you can join us for a few minutes, right?" She asked, looking to Grandmother Bright.

"I came by to ask and to pick up my bow - we might need it if the goods are stolen. Oh, and before we leave we have to let that noble know about the refugees."

Chapter 1: Plaza
The goddess nodded serenely as Rose joined them. The festivities, even cut short, had been quite active and gone on for some time and Grandmother Bright offered "No need to rush yourself into danger. Sit and enjoy the night, it is a beautiful one." She turned to Rose and a gold faced servant poured a third serving of black tea. "Tell me a bit about yourself Rose. Tell me a bit more about yourself? How did you come to Exalt?" She said the words without hesitation perhaps expecting Ixie to know or for Rose to know about Ixie.

She'll use Measure the Wind here to pick up that you're a Solar Exalted

Chapter 1: Plaza
The blacksmith bowed stiffly and took a seat. "Not much to tell. I was a blacksmith. Still am. Exalted when an Immaculate monk thought I was an Exigent. He threatened the elders and I beat the shit out of him. Now I can do what I did before, only better."

Chapter 1: Plaza
Yin felt discomfort seeing all those ghosts. So many restless souls being kept from passing on. She didn't know anything about this Grandmother Bright spirit, but if she was the kind of god to enslave the deceased, then Yin doubted she would like her. She had a nervous, churning sensation in her belly as she followed the cheerful Ixie.

She listened to Grandmother Bright's and Ixie's exchanges without saying a word. The spirit sure looked nice, but that could easily be a facade. It would require much more for Yin to open up to her. She seemed a bit distracted throughout the conversation as she kept thinking about the ghosts outside. It reminded her of her own people---all of the thousands dead---and how she kept all of their treasured feelings within her right now.

When would she let them go? When she was ready to let go.

"I am Exalted too," Yin suddenly said. "But I hear that's something you shouldn't say out loud."

Chapter 1: Plaza
Ixie jumped, and looked back at Yin, then blushed, hoopping up and rushing over  with a swpooping glide to lead her in. "Oh! Right. This is Yin~! I.. umm..  I didn't see her, out there." She gave a sheepish blush. "S-sorry, Yin. This is Grandmother Bright, the caretaker of Bright Plaza." she said, and gestured between them, too, then darted back over to invite Yinto a seat as well.  Sht took a seat and sampled a few of the fruits on the tray, mostly just a few grapes, while the others made their introductions.

Then she gave Grandmother bright a long glance, here eyes fluttering. "H-huh? Wait a second. They're Exalted?"

She turned back to Rose, then to Yin. And Ixie just started giggling, covering her mouth with her tiny hand.

She laughed for a moment or two, before announcing. "Me too~!" She smiled at the two of them, tipping her head - her twintails giving a springy bounce with the motion. "Liri and Sashy are, too. But that's a secret." She put her finger to her lips in a gesture. "I... I guess that's why I picked you out, Yin, even if I couldn't tell. Fate is weird like that." she said, shrugging her shoulders and wings.

Ixie did notice something a little off about Yin, though. "Umm.. You okay, Yin? It's kinda hard to tell with the brass face, but.. umm.. something bugging you?" She inched over next to her, and draped a wing around her back. "You know, the whole...  argument with  the guard wasn't just your fault, right? We'll make sure everything works out?"

Chapter 1: Plaza
Ixie blinked, and looked at Yin plainly for a moment, before laughing again. "They live here, silly. Well...  kinda. This is where they stay.  Grandmother Bright's plaza has to have a thousand and one ghosts and a thousand and one mortal residents at all times.  It's one of those weird things, just the way essence works. But she takes care of all of the residents, and then there's a few like me... She took me in so that I could actually find a place to live in the city. And I was gonna end up helping people in need anyway, so...  This way, I can work for her, and even get a little coin so I don't have to go stealing what I need." Ixie explained gently.

"I mean, It was odd for me at first, too. What do you say to ghosts? But most of them are pretty normal, I mean. Aside from being dead. "

Chapter 1: Plaza
"Souls should pass on to the cycle of reincarnation," Yin muttered, not at all convinced by what Ixie said. She placed her hand over her heart. "You treasure the memories and feelings of your loved ones after they pass away. You don't keep their spirits lingering. It's an awful thing to do."

Chapter 1: Plaza
"There is no jailer. Many reincarnate after they've concluded their business. I neither force them nor discourage them, merely invite them to stay. Some may be ready in a week to move on, others still have their own affairs," Grandmother Bright offered up, "One woman sought to meet with her husband each night for just a bit longer. She watched her newborn daughter grow up, met her daughter's husband, and then when her husband passed away she went with him. Another man knew his family would ruin the business he worked his whole life for, so he stayed in charge for a decade longer. Others simply enjoy the ancestor worship - many Delzahn practice it, but so do many others. And others still find comfort here over the Underworld."

The goddess was wise, but she knew she could not win over all with simple words. As long as Zhu Yin bore neither her nor the ghosts harm, she concluded, "1001 ghosts and 1001 men, women, and children are here, and 1001 ghosts and 1001 men, women, and children they still stay."

Chapter 1: Plaza
Yin crossed her arms. She understood that this was a goddess and goddesses should be respected. But she hadn't gotten a good first impression. She looked over at Ixie. She seemed to like this spirit at least. Maybe she should keep an open mind at least.

"As long as they aren't trapped here," she said. "I don't mean any offense."

Chapter 1: Plaza
"But you got a knack for giving it," Rose noted quietly. "Might do you some good to sit down and listen for a bit instead of opening your mouth, priestess."

The blacksmith cradled her cup of tea in large hands, the long dexterous fingers wrapping around the delicate porcelain gently. "Can't hide being Exalted so I don't bother. Thankfully most people don't care outside of the Immaculates and if you do them a good turn, they'll cut you some slack. The Terrestrials, on the other hand, got everything invested in them being good and us being bad. We just have to prove we're as good as them and remind the Terrestrials they have to be good rulers as Exalted."

Chapter 1: Plaza
"They aren't trapped." Ixie reassured Yin. "Actually, there's a long list of both ghosts and humans who want to live here. The ones who are in need are taken care of by Grandmother Bright and those of us who are able to help them." She said lightly. "Like I said, I live here, too. If the ghosts were trapped, I'd have a problem with it too - I know what being locked up is like, Yin - I wouldn't actually wish that on anybody, you know?" She said, lowering her head with a small shrug of her wings and shoulders both.

Then Rose spoke up, and she cracked a little bit of her characteristic grin. "Not sure whether you or your hammer is blunter, yet, Rosey." She chimed in a teasing tone. "I don't know much about all that, but I try not to show off too much. Grandmother Bright says I'm a Dawn. She said that makes me a warrior, but, ah...  I dunno about that. I am a good shot, though~!"

Ixie gave a little shrug. "I don't really think there's any offense here, though. They were just talking about details, right?" She glanced between the Goddess and the Priestess gently, an optimistic look in her eyes. "Anyway... umm... Don't tell Lirin or Sashy that I told you they're Exalted, too. It's kind of supposed to be a secret, but, hey, we all have the same secret, so... yeah..."

Ixie sipped her tea, then leaned back tisting restlessly as she stretched her arms out. "Besides, if we're serious about helping the people, we might need each other's powers."

Chapter 1: Plaza
Grandmother Bright, the matter settled, nodded at Rose's statement. "Perhaps a bit of a good turn would go far in this situation." As she looked to Zhu Yin, then to Ixie, then to Rose, she suggested, "Rather than tell the man where to send supplies and rather than tell people they're being helped by some invisible man in a glass tower, show them. You are a craftswoman are you not? Build a silo - if people ask, tell them that their food will be increasing two-fold. Keeping people happy while also keeping them safe, are sometimes two very different tasks."

Yin bit her lip.

"I'm not a priestess," she muttered and looked away from Rose. She turned her attention to Bright. "I don't have many skills. I can fight better than most, and I can heal the sick. What can I do to help?"

Ixie glanced to Zhu as the bronzed woman. "Well, you might be able to help us search for the missing shipment. And if you can fight, then maybe  we could use  that, if it's actually been taken by someone like bandits. Sashy might be better suited to helping coordinate the relief efforts here in the city, and the silo project." She said, glancing to  Rose. "I mean - if that sort of thing sounds good to you. Lirin and I will probably go on the search, unless the Tri-Khan gives us some surprising information from their meeting with him."

"Regardless, I think we gotta actually start doing something soon - plans aren't gonna feed anyone." Ixie hopped back up to her feet, at that, her wings giving a little flutter.

Chapter 1: Plaza
The tea and small treats sit well and Grandmother Bright nods you off, Ixie leading the way toward her humble home in Plaza, grabbing the crossbow she loved so much. Rose had her hammer, Zhu Yin her bronze body. They certainly looked capable of taking on the world. It was of course, still late in the evening, Sash and Lirin were still in the Old Town, with it's tall glass towers. At night, every street save Plaza's ghost filled ones was quiet - the city's many Shadowlands making few living want to stay out after dark. Until the enchanted lights of the towers close, a feeling of unease filled the night.
