OOC Thread #2
Boston Slim, Painted Man, Keys, Sleight, Rex, Axel, Bean, Catchy, Morningstar (soon Tiger Lily), Rasputin, Iris, and Cipher.

All of you have expressed an interest in continuing.  12 people works out to 3 groups of 4 characters, which is rather neat and tidy I think.  I'm going to work out your contacts overlap (again), and then get those groups back together.

I've switched the group # for the runs we had on the go to hide them.  I'm just going to do a flat reboot of the runs, obviously they'll be a bit different from what I had started.  Everything should be fresh.

The premise remains the same, the City of Boston is in lockdown.  No traffic gets in or out.  Some corporations seemed to have had inside information, and fled the city ahead of the lockdown, while others remain trapped with many of the city's denizens.  Business is still business, however, and there is money and reputation to be made.

If you need more time to tidy things up, say so.  Let me know where your characters stand, if you haven't already.  Almost good to go here!

Also, new OOC thread.

Hah, thanks!  I am considering whether we should just do a whole reboot, with you folks making new characters.  You can, of course, keep your old ones if you want.  Likely, depending on how many people are here in the end, I'll have to grab a few new players.

But I think I'll restart the storyline so that everything is fresh, and we don't have to worry about wtf we were doing when I poofed.

Ah.  Well, we can remedy that a bit.  Are you adverse to using Chummer?  It's a 3rd party Shadowrun character creation program.

https://github.com/chummer5a/c...releases/tag/5.205.0

At the bottom is a zip link: https://github.com/chummer5a/c...0/Chummer5.205.0.zip

Create a chummer folder on your computer and drag all the files from the zip to there, double-click the .exe to run it.

If not, I could talk you through the creation of your character using the Karma system.

Failing that, you can still use the priority system to create your character.  It is up to you.

There are a lot of things to like about karma creation, but it screws over certain metatypes with big stat bonuses (i.e., trolls) because of the stat scaling. Lifepath creation is fun, but hella clunky. I know Bean was originally built via sum-to-10, which makes for very powerful out-the-gate characters but, as previously mentioned, leads to powerful specialists. I personally feel like this is somewhat baked into the game, but I'm willing to do whatever. It's just worth noting that karmagen characters are likely to be noticeably less powerful than their priority/sum-to-10 counterparts.

Well, just for fun I redid Catchy in karma, or rather I copy pasted the Priority Catchy I had in chummer to see... and she's 200 karma over. Because, yes, Catchy was built as a very focused specialist.

Now I'm going to build a new Catchy, with the same core concept, using the karma system. A more balanced Catchy, just to see where it leads me... But if past experience is a guide I'll like the new Catchy better :)

And I'm not doing rigging, and I feel that while drones come in handy they are not a must have.

I have Chummer and have used it for base creation, but find using a book so much more enjoyable. Tiz OK, I would be completely OK just playing as is if nothing else. I was thinking of changing a few things around to make the character a bit more money hungry. Kind of an all around mage, but can summon some hefty spirits.

I just need to know the limitations/benefits of Fetishes.

One fetish can be for a spell category, and multiple spells can be limited to the same fetish.

The type of fetish is important, not a specific thing.  So any bird feather, not 'a feather from the first parrot I owned'.

Fetishes are not foci, it doesn't count towards the foci limit, and it is not astrally active.  It's a totally mundane item.

I feel that the karma system deals with the biggest problem I have with trolls.  They don't start out as stupid combat monsters that I have to try to not kill the whole party while dealing with them at the same time.  I realize that is what trolls are supposed to be but every time I get a troll player They are so hard to even damage that the rest of the party is in danger of dying before the troll even takes a scratch.

As a player I like the karma system because it does encourage more balanced and believable (imo) characters for me.

I think i am just going to go with ground vehicles for right now.  That gives me room to grow....:)  Iris is supposed to be a street kid anyway....lol

In reply to Iris (msg # 48):

Yeah, but if you want to play a strong human with a karma build, it costs the same as building a smart or intuitive one. Getting a human to an "average runner" Strength of 3 costs 25 karma. Getting a troll that same two-point boost costs 65. Karma buy functionally forces trolls to play significantly against type or spend most of their starting karma on attributes.

shrug It's all part and parcel of the cost scaling and the spend-points-from-a-pool with flat costs versus buy-with-the-scaling costs. With priority, it's really hard to avoid min-maxing because you save so much karma down the road. It's not unique to Shadowrun, of course. Also, there's no "right way" to do it.

I'm probably actually going to try and scrape something together with the life module system, bookkeeping be damned, because I've never really gotten to use it as anything other than an experiment.

Rigging is IMO one of the simpler character types once you have a handle on it. You could be a drone expert with a supped up car. Heck one time I played a rigger with a full Semi-truck with trailer. Another rigger had a car and drones that could be launched from the truck and two deckers and one full mage rounded out the team. Crazy times were had by all and nobody could track down the deckers in their mobile satellite up-linked tank armored trailer.

Don't forget that pretty much everything is wireless enabled in 2070: hacking a bad guy's gun to eject the magazine is a perfectly valid tactic, and a good reason for a decker/technomancer to come on mission with the team and do stuff in the real world instead of lying on a couch wired to life support :)

Sleight:
Catchy: Mystic Adept of Thievery and no combat abilities?

Well, Catchy is actually excellent at unarmed combat, but that's not going to do much of anything to any decently armored street samurai (it's not like her strength is anything to brag about). She has plenty of nuisance spells, but no actual combat spells. She won't touch guns. For what it's worth her defenses are excellent, and she would actually be quite good at throwing grenades, if she had any ... :) Oh, and she follows Cat, so even if she could take down a bad guy she won't unless she's bleeding.

She's a mystic adept with superb agility and excellent reflexes, it wouldn't take much for her to become a dangerous katana wielder, or a superb marksm... markscatw... markscatelf, or a combat mage, or even a grenadier, she just isn't any of those things... yet.

You can list Keys as another ‘Fully Awakened Astral and Magical specialist’.
Also ‘High Charisma’ with good social skills.

N/PC’s might be left with the impression of a Corporate Trained wage-mage, laying low in the shadows.

@Bean, what type of Face are you going for?

The reason I ask is, I was thinking of a social infiltrator, so less about negotiating our pay, but the person who gets sent in somewhere for recon, dressing up as people, mimicking voices, faces, that kind of thing.

As I'm trying to think the type of character I would enjoy playing as, whilst avoiding too much overlap with people. Some redundancy is useful, too much is stealing someone else's thunder.

Given her construction via life module, Bean's not going to be as great at that stuff as a traditionally costed character (never mind a freaking social adept shakes head at how broken those can get). Nonetheless, that kind of social infiltration is her primary way to contribute to a team outside a meet. Like I said, she's not as specialized as Painted Man seems to be, and while she's got a lot of points in knowledge skills (another byproduct of the life module system), those points are not distributed as broadly.

Keys is a full magician ... and fits most stereotypical assumptions therein.

He hired Sleight to smuggle him into Boston, and arrived here a few days ago.
Therefore he is without much in the way of contacts or resources ... or a place to stay.
But he’s ready to rock’n’roll.

Unless anyone contacts me about connecting their character to Keys, I’ll just look at making friends and influencing people as I go.
But if anyone has a reason that Keys May have specifically come into Boston ... through the quarantine ... please suggest it to me.  I am happy to backstory some connection with another PC that caused Keys to come here.

Part of the problem is that most Boston material is part of the Boston Lockdown video game, and is not present in the regular published material. And no, I don't have the game, so I can't help much.

I found a storyline of the events covered by the videogame here (SPOILER ALERT):
https://forums.shadowruntablet...ex.php?topic=20787.0

And here's a wiki article about Boston

So Seems I  am a bit Late in coming back, didn't realize this game would get so active so fast. Bester is a Gun-Fu  Pistol adept/ Assasin, but since I have played this character to high Karma in an other game, I am all up for changing up. What would the group Need? Although it seems a Fighter would be useful. ( Plus Big D would be familiar with the Character too:)

We have two standard full mages ...
Two Smuggler types (1 rigger, 1 Mage) ...
Two Faces ...
A sneaky, agile cat-elf thief ...

More muscle wouldn’t go astray, or an Alchemist Mage to help us with Preparations and Foci.
I dunno if we were going with the NPC Hacker or not ... but that slot is infilled PC-wise

So we seem to be:

Sleight: Shaman, Smuggling/Illusion/Heal Specialist.
Keys: Aakened, Combat and Astral specialist.

Iris: Vehicle Rigger / Smuggler.
Loren: Combat Rigger.

Catchy: Mystic Adept of Thievery (Low Damage Close Combat).

Bean: Face and Infiltrator.

Tiger Lily: Street Sam.

Bester: ??
Painted Man: ??

We could easily do with more muscle, in my honest opinion.
Sams/Body Guards/etc are the backbone of a Shadowrun team.
I feel we have magic covered, and vehicles/rigging.

Re: OOC Thread #2
We have enough for two groups at this point or one very large group who gets hired out through one Face or another and 'we' (meaning the players) assign who will go on what run, up to and including all of us? If we do it this way we can probably do multiple runs a week, depending on who/what gets damaged and how bad. Sleight can put 17 dice into a Heal after runs, so that is like 5-6 health levels back, but anybody who is hurt more than that at the end of a run will need time to heal up. When his binding skill get's higher, then he can probably use an assist from a spirit to get that a bit higher, but I took Counterspelling at a 4 instead and have a 1 Binding.

Or we can split up into two groups. If everybody decides that we want a 3rd party technomancer I am good with that, just remember they will want a cut of the run. If Bester/Painted make a Decker and a Tank, then I think that would be best from an all around perspective and we use the 3rd party decker when we have to.

Being as Iris and Sleight are smugglers, and therefore experienced with being subtle ...  and Bean is a smooth talker, not a fighter ... I would suggest that the Adept sneaky Thief, Catchy would work well with them.   They would be Team Subtle.

As Keys is a Combat Mage, and Lorex is a Combat Rigger ... I am suggesting that they be Team Not-so-Subtle.   And be joined by other characters along such lines.

Oh good grief, I just figured out that I do not need a RCC since I do not have any drones.  So the question I have has three answers:

Should I keep the awesome one I have for the future in case I want drones?  -or-

Should I get rid of it because background wise there is no reason Iris would have bought it? -or-

Should I trade it in for a lesser one because I could see her having a smaller one laying around "just in case"?

And actually I just answered my own question, if I trade down I can add a vehicle mod that I really wanted but didn't have the cash for....lol.

Fast casting two Stunbolts Sleight should be able to take down any non-mage in a pass. Should being the operative word there as we all know how dice rolls don't always end up being what they should. He should be able to do that without taking drain damage himself. Otherwise he can throw a pretty high force Ball Lightning to take care of groups and toys without using reagents, but with reagents it goes high enough that it might even tickle a troll in max body armor. Stun Bolt is for the trolls in max body armor though. Ball Lightning is also to slow the bad guys down on the Initiative train, specially if they are all grouped together in some hallway or ally.

I've been off the grid for a couple of days, so playing catch up.

If we do go for 2 teams, then there's room for 2 different Faces, so reviewing Painted Man to see if he needs any revisions, or a complete rebuild.

There was a character I built for another game a while ago called Gonzo, who was an extreme journalist inspired by Gonzo reporting, who is in the shadows to understand why runners do what they do, whilst recording and selling his experiences for extra money on the side.

There are fun qualities for that kind of thing, too.

Bean fell into running sideways because of personal connections and the fact that her employers kinda sorta evaded laws constantly and needed her to check the language on their paperwork. And eventually to chat up drivers. And then Iris needed her to sit in on a meeting, and Bean needed Iris to get away from the Irish mafia. And now she's only working two half-shifts for the shipping company and instead pays her rent mostly with, uh, "freelance consulting."

Re: OOC Thread #2
I decided I will keep Bester as is, Gunfu/ Sneak adept. Wont kill " non combatants", works as a "freelance bodyguard". Became a runner due to lack of options after Military screw-up/ setup/ dishonorable discharge.

Which of the 2 teams he will be in, He is a "lets get in silent" first and if the shit hits the fan. Time to rock.
As far as "Friends with other runners", I presume for game ease we all know each other through small jobs here and there prior to the game start. Or at least have some Fixer/ Fence in common.

I do like the Idea of all being part of a single large "Runner group", and that we all do our parts of whatever run is set up, as mentioned doing more than one run, and each of us helps out with what we are specialized in when the time comes up. Perhaps we will have a single focus for a while if something "big" shows up. (wink Big D  :) )

PS- i don't seem to post as often as some of you.. or more precisely, there is more of a time gap for when i can get online, but i will be watching the chat during the day a bit but work don't allow me time to look in. but once i am home I will try to check alot.

Looking at the preview for No Future, and a Press Pass is showing in the contents.
Would you mind sharing the details on it? And if there is any point to a ProCam/SmartCam, or the fact there are cybereyes, drones and normal cameras available, there is little benefit to them?

Re: OOC Thread #2
PRESS PASS
There are some press credentials that are free, such as those given out to an event photographer, but legitimate cred costs nuyen. A press pass (which is registered to your SIN, of course) can be purchased from any media organization that’s willing to have you, giving some special access to areas. The press can enter a crime scene (but will always have an officer at their side to make sure they don’t disrupt anything), get into government functions, attend high-class parties (as long as they’re working) and gain some bonus legal protections. Note that many corporations don’t have a “freedom of the press” law in their corporate charter, so this is by no means a “get out of testimony free” card, but every real reporter carries one.
Availability 6, Cost 50¥

PROCAMS AND SMARTCAMS
Procams are cameras, large and bulky ones, but can have a rating (and therefore a capacity) of up to 12. Availability 4, Cost Rating x 250¥
SmartCams increase the limit of the attached camera (normally equal to its rating) by 1 (external) or 2 (internal) while connected to a DNI (a datajack to get the full +2)
External: Availability 6, Cost 200¥
Internal: Availability 8, double the cost of the camera

I haven't built a camera recently, so you'll have to judge if it's worth stuffing 12 points of stuff into one, and then having to mount it on a drone, or getting a cameraman to follow you with it. Or carrying it on your shoulder.
SmartCam: well, honestly, how many dices is your camera going to roll to need the extra limit ?

Thanks Catchy - I concur that I'm not fully seeing the benefit of a ProCam, compared to a normal camera, as if you do want 12 capacity worth of enhancements, the availability is bound to go over 12 and not be buyable at character creation.

Now, am I "legitimate" for a press pass, or is there a way to have a fake one? As pirate stations wouldn't have legitimate press, after all...

Sleight could probably just Trid-Phantasm the whole thing, with imaginary runner's faces and voices. Just have Gonzo put up the camera and record the illusion. If he can post it anonymously(TM) and monetize it as instructional or as entertainment we could actually make some credits off the runs....given the Johnson's will agree to that kind of thing. I don't think the Johnson's will want their runs reproduced....as it could lead back to them and their company....which will get us all killed.

Filming illusionary shows?
I suspect that’s already a major endeavour by many corps.

I often ask my SR players:  why does your character run?   Hacker, magician, rigger, muscle ... most any Corp would provide a Corp SIN and worthy wage for most any character in this game.

If Gonzo wanted to use a mage with Trid Illusion to make instructional or educational shows, he could do so very viably without doing it illigally.

In the real world, do you think most criminals ‘are in it for the freedom more than anything else’?

Law enforcement is just as tough as any criminal gang, and criminal gangs usually loose.  So the consequences and effort are rarely worth it.
And if it was as easy to have ‘the freedom’ as that, I suspect a lot more people (real world and fantasy) would be enjoying it than are.

I guess, as always, we chalk it up to this being a fantasy setting, without those consequences ... we just glamourise it.

Hello all, quick question what system did you all use to make your characters? I've seen mention of Sum of and Karma, I used priority when I initially made Chromium but I've made them using other systems in SR4 and there was quiet a difference between the three.

Second, does anyone have a character sheet they normally use?

Yes! Indeed, I love that cyberweapons are almost invisible until you use them...I might have a set up with a cybergun in each arm...possibly.

All right, just got to figure out if I want to have bone density, active hard wiring or some other nifty piece of cyber to compliment what I have already...bone density makes me harder to kill, so that is likely my choice....

I did not, but in all fairness I played John Wick as an Immortal in the White Wolf system back in 1999...his name was John Stock and he was the son of a British Ambassador married to a former Chinese woman. Yes, somebody came up with rules for Highlander like Immortals to play with Vampires, Mages, and Werewolves. Yes he had the merit Acute Sense: Sight, Ambidextrous, Concentration, Code of Honor, Dare Devil, Lightning Calculator, Jack-Of-All-Trades and above all....Self-Confident. Specialization in Pistols and Knives. The youngest immortals started with a lot of 17 points for freebies I think and John Stock spent nothing on extra quickening and never did over two GM's and about 3 years of once a week game play.

Whilst RPoL is designed for intermittent activity, I was in a game before where there was a Discord channel for people to chat casually, bounce ideas, without overloading the in-game OOC chat.

As such, I've made a server if people want to chat on there, co-ordinate on character design, shared backgrounds, anything really. And if things like useful links are found, they can be shared back on RPoL.

https://discord.gg/PePRDAc

If you change your name to your character name, it will make it much easier too.

Team Awesomely Subtle:
Bean: Face and Infiltrator.
Sleight: Shaman, Smuggling/Illusion/Heal Specialist.
Iris: Vehicle Rigger / Smuggler.
Catchy: Mystic Adept of Thievery (Low Damage Close Combat).
Bester: Gun Fu and sneaky Adept.

Team Brilliantly Blatant:
Gonzo: Face/Noisey Reporter
Keys: Awakened, Combat and Astral specialist.

Chromium: Street Sam.
Tiger Lily: Street Sam.

We lost a Rigger, so there is that option.

The teams don't have to be balanced, per se, just less or more limelight and different style/difficulty of missions. One of my most enjoyable games back in college was having a group of only 3 (Sam, Tank, Decker) working personal security. They were Shadowruns in all but name, but our job was not to be stealthy...at least normally. Then one of our clients got himself 'killed' fighting some Black ICE, but my character was on hand with a resuscitation patch and rolled some crazy target number (think it was a 21) to get the guy to survive. Then it was all about stealth and keeping the non-dead client alive and hidden until the right time.

Also looks like we're missing a decker if that helps.

How do we feel about people playing more than one character?

And I'd be honest the group allocations seem pretty random, any runners going to have some ability at stealth if they're going to be successful. Would it not make sense to split the group according to covering some of the basics? Like each group gets a sammy, a face, some kind of magical helper and some kind of B&E expert?

That tends to make it more successful. Right now you've got almost all the magic and B&E in one group and all the muscle in the other...

I think that the groups could hire NPCs to cover spots where they are weak.  I think it would be better than people starting to play multiple characters.

Re: OOC Thread #2
Depending on the Run, most characters from Team Subtle could also be on a run in Team Blatant (given there was no major damage) the next day/night. Just not concurrent. However, the same is not often going to be true going the other way around. Don't know if Keys has the Heal Spell, but if he doesn't then Sleight might be a pit stop at the end of a run to get those Street Sams back up and ready for the next run quick.

Re: OOC Thread #2
The characters that rely more on stealth, illusion, infiltration, and less on brute force and big bangs have been put on Team Subtle by the players who are playing those characters. Sleight and Iris have working relationship in their past and may or may not form the core of that team, but at least know each other. Sleight and Keys know each other and there may be some cross over there. Since a large portion of the players are more subtle, they were put on a team as a way of separating into two groups. Either way, we started with both groups having a Mage, Rigger, and Face, and spread out from there, but Lorax left, so only 1 rigger now.

Personally, I would like them to all be a big team with Gonzo and Bean finding jobs. The GM gives us 3-4 options of Runs to go on and the characters decide who goes on what run.

However, that may not be what others or the GM wants to do....but its something to talk about in OOC till the game starts.

Okay, well Chromium is a true hybrid, hes just as happy doing silent and deadly with stealth and silenced weapons as he is lighting people up with his shotgun.

I agree a big flexible team is better, I just can't imagine building a character without at least some stealth l, so I suppose that's my problem :D an investigative reporter who can't break into peoples offices to get the scoop is kind of strange in my mind...lol.

And I'd be surprised if the combat mage doesn't have at least access to a spell or spirit that can help him hide :D

Re: OOC Thread #2
I would like to amend the previous statement.

I would like everybody to be looking for jobs, but bring them back to the team, let our Negotiating experts do their job to get the details and decide who goes on what job. Probably not going to be taking more than a job a day, since we really should be doing leg work on each job to make sure we are not getting screwed...but we could also have reinforcements available on every job in case things go sideways if we operate as a big team.

Half the team does one job, while the other waits in the shadows as back up. Then we can switch out for the next job. Gonzo/Bean/Hacker should be able to do leg work for the next job during the current job. Kinda work it like a basketball team with a bunch of talent on the bench.

Yeah, planning and acquiring the specialized gear for some jobs will take a few days, not to mention healing time, study time etc. That said Chromium needs every job he can get! He has debts to pay and a high flying girlfriend to impress!

In the game world this makes a lot of sense on rpol it does not. One run can take literally weeks if not longer I'm not super excited about watching other people play for weeks at a time. I'll let Big D decide what he wants to do in the end but I'd imagine if we have multiple groups we'll end up with multiple runs just so everyone can play.

Pretty much this is my opinion too.  :)  I personally want to run with Gonzo because I think the concept is one of the more awesome and original ones I have seen in a game (and there was a lot of animosity toward the concept). :) I have the closest connection with Bean so I would like to run with them too but in the end it really doesn't matter to me, I just want to play with a good group. Honestly I don't think we have so many players that we HAVE to make two teams even.

Re: OOC Thread #2
It seems 5E has a much higher payout schedule that other editions and I didn't look at it before now. My character could pay the bills with 2 regular runs a month and move up a life style. That is 2 runs without any other modifiers. Course it would not meet his Karma needs to learn new spells, but it would pay the bills. If we are going up against Dice Pools in the 12+ range, which we probably will, or large numbers then we get even more cash, like lots of it.

That is the normal stuff. If we play as one big group and pick and choose who ends up on the job, then the job will probably have a total payout # that the runners split. The example in the book about stealing a sword from a gang is probably easily accomplished by no more than two of our current PC's...and probably would be posted as a $10k job as a group. Stealing the same sword from a Mafia Lt strong hold would be posted up as a $150k job. Sure, 1-3 sufficiently skilled and lucky characters could get in and out with the sword and split that big pot, but with no back up a single hitch could mean failure and/or death.

Previous editions payed out like $5000 for the job total and characters weren't expected to live past 3 game sessions ;-)

Exactly my point. With magic Healing (Sleight can manage 5 success on average) if you survive the run, then you can be up and ready for the next run before you have to pay rent twice. Relatively generous, which I think was one of the complaints from previous editions. Will make Sleight using a gross of reagents on a hard run a little more palatable.

My runners usually are in the shadows because it is what they want to do.  Why be a schlub working a quickie mart when you can run the shadows?  lol.

When it comes to pay you also have to think on the otherside of it too.  If the offer is A LOT of money chances are its just going to be a setup anyway.

If Mr. Johnson offers A LOT of money, demand half upfront, settle for a third, and skip the country !

Ok, I've never done it in Shadowrun, but I remember a memorable game of Call of Cthulhu that ended with, strangely enough, Boston being erased from the map while the PCs were making new (and very comfortable) lives for themselves in Europe. As NPC, of course, since the GM demanded we hand back our character sheets for ritual burning :)

Come on now, if you had a few hundred Karma to spend a few dozen million creds to spend, I am pretty sure you could get off the flight.....that you put your own runner team on to keep your ass alive. Now surviving for long in Europe without a corporate sponsor to provide day and night security....not to long.

The cash payout system for 5E is pretty nice in my opinion, unless you owe wads of cash to black site hospital who 'owns' your ware. My characters generally got pulled into the shadows from other more legitimate work or just started life without a SIN and never wanted one. Sleight could do legitimate work, but it certainly doesn't pay the bills and allow for as much study and research time. Even then, he has a tribe to take care of back in Maine, so anything he can spare goes there.

Being able to convert nuyen and karma back and forth works out pretty well, really. My long-running tabletop game had a number of Awakened characters who converted most of their money to karma and a few gear/ware-heavy characters who converted much of their karma to nuyen.

Just because you could stop doing it doesn't mean you would.  My characters are always there because they want to live that life. Maybe some people have a different perspective on it but I believe it takes a specific mentality to want to be a runner.  Just like any rpg the "normal" people don't feel that getting shot at in high stress situations (or hunting down monsters) is worth a months pay.

Lol, I've found a shotgun with frechette rounds is more reliable to hit for a mage and makes it less likely people realize you're a mage and go 'gank the mage!'

Other option is a grenade launcher full of smoke grenades and tear gas...because I hope you all brought your gas masks?

Anything to make them think you're not a finger wiggler!

I would rather that they just never realize that we are there till well after we have left, if then. Shotguns tend to take both hands where an automatic pistol should only take one and it is much easier to fire a handgun around a corner than a shotgun. Spray and pray covering fire gives the rest of the team bonuses if I remember correctly, or at least makes the op4 'duck and cover' while I quick cast something useful.

Matter of style I guess, but not really an option. Sleight has a pistol so he can look like a Sam with his armor and Helmet with respirator (not a full gas mask, sorry).

I am sure the GM will come up with interesting and harsh challenges for us that involve more than turning invisible and stealing some street ganger's underwear.

Hello, hello. Looking forward to joining you all! Seems most of the original group I was with is back. Glad to see that and everyone else!

I had originally built Rasputin out as a more traditional Street Sam. Haven’t quite caught up on all the banter but it seems that might still be a useful skill set to bring to the team. Let me know if there’s something we might be lacking. I’m a pretty versatile player so I don’t mind picking up most needed skills.

I’ll be a little rusty on SR5 since it has been a year or two since I’ve played. Been doing Blades in the Dark with my RL group. Shouldn’t take too long to pick back up though :)

[Edited to add]
Now that 2 seconds after posting I find the skills thread, clear lack of decking. Are we for-going the matrix aspect as part of play or shall I fill out that role? Deckers can be a lot of fun.

Yes, we are seriously lacking in the Decking department. There is a technomancer NPC contact that it seems pretty much everybody has taken that was kind of filling that void.

If you are into decking, as a player, then go for it. If not, then we will just have to 'hire' a decker for every run, which will grind into our profits, but I don't have a problem with that.

I'm pretty sure the memory test is to identify the female voice in the background not the Colonel who gives his name in the first sentence.... but I could be wrong.

Yeah, 5 successes out of 14 is right where it should be. I was referring to My memory test at 2 out off 11, which is pretty crap. Also the spirit test vs summoning was 3/6 which is high, but his resistance test was low....

Just the weird part of chance. Heck, I once rolled for my character to pick up a magical sword in Palladium and rolled a 3 in 1,000,000 (5 0's in a row 10 sided die, then a 3). The GM had required a 5 in a million chance and fell out of his chair when he saw it. Still didn't qualify for Excalibur though ;-(

I was at home for the first two days of the week looking after an unwell baby, so that was dull!

Active enough that he needs to be constantly looked after, as he tries to climb over me constantly, up the sofa, and failing that, playing with an assortment of musical toys.

Thankfully he is back at nursery, so I get the boredom of work rather than of parenting. Can check RPOL on the sly from my phone, and via my laptop whilst I'm on lunch.

They are not ? They are not !

But Howling Shadows (p.45) will tell you how much more expensive a genetically enhanced pet is compared to a regular one. Which, if you don't know expensive it is, isn't much help.

I guess you can go back to SR4 and Running Wild, and lift their price table, monthly upkeep cost, and minimum lifestyle. Although I'd really like to know what kind of pampered dog they were thinking of when they required a middle lifestyle to keep them.

Right, because I've never seen a homeless man with a dog *sarcasm*. Ok, I can see where if you're a corporate drone, married to a corporate droness, and you're leaving the dog on its own for 16 hours each day, then you'd better have a large house, preferably with a garden.

Well, would you rather have a pomeranian or a great dane while living in a very small apartment? :P  The larger the dog, the more space you need, and the more upkeep the dog requires.  Not to mention higher costs of keeping the dog, bigger dogs have more expensive health issues, usually.  Also, larger dogs require more exercise.  You wanna go dog walking in downtown Seattle, or the Barrens?  I know where I'd chose. :P

G’day I’m your potential newbie!
I’m flexible on picking up whatever if it still needed to fill out a team. The boss was saying you might be sparse on deckers as well. I don’t have one ready on hand but I can put together a concept easy enough. I do have a Street Sammie/Combat Medic at the ready. And I have an idea I am playing with jus need to see if it is more Street Samurai or Adept in execution.

If it’s more about doing quiet runs I’ll put together a Decker, if you guys like a bit more action I will do the Sammie.

FYI for Iris.

Sleight, Keys, and Bester went up stairs, out of LOS with the rest of the bar as far as I understand. The Cheers bar from the TV show didn't have a place to view upstairs/downstairs that I ever saw (only watched about 5 episodes). Unless Iris went to the base of the stairs and looked up I don't think that Sleight becoming visible would have been able to be seen. Not that I don't want Iris to see Sleight, just that he waited till he was out of LOS from the rest of the patrons of the bar to drop the spell. Kinda doesn't want to have to deal with those Orks or anybody else spying on people.

He doesn't know if the Orks are working for Jack or for the bar or what...

Another street Samurai would be welcome, but I'd love a decker, just because I typically don't have to pay a PC decker more than their share :P And I know they are always available!

Hey guys sorry for disappearing. A serious family emergency cropped up and I have been scrambling to make appointments and sort out paper work and get things sorted. Things are finally getting back to normal. I am just going to do a Samurai after all since Deckers tend to be absolutely essential to the planning on any mission they are on. So if this problem flares up again and I wind up busy again at least I won’t hold things up. I’ll have it all set tomorrow.

I went with a bit of an interesting concept to try something out. Instead of being packed with Cyberware I went all in favour of Bioware. Not the greatest samurai in raw power but can take a beating like no ones business, and more important for the most part can't be Decked out of the fight. Firing the concept alongside it in the morning.

He is coming back in from the woods...
Thus explaining his absence for a bit.

I haven’t picked up a lifestyle yet in case people had plans for shacking up in groups/teams. So long as you can put up with a guy who really likes his hikes, fresh game meat, and eventually some suspiciously lupine dogs. Strangely he cleans up well though, not dedicated face well, but enough to survive a social encounter or two.

The version of Bean for the first iteration of this game was exactly that: "all-natural" street sam. It's pricey, but you save a ton of essence. I think she would have been effective in combat, and could also hold her own in low-level social encounters (exactly what you'd want from a bodyguard).

@Rasputin: I am slightly under-powered damage wise since I can't just set strength and agility to max on a limb to get the best stats but I still managed to get 5 or above in all physical areas through ware or base stat so I can do most things competently. The bigger thing being I got a minimal matrix presence and a lot more Essence so I can avoid the usual ways of shutting down an OP Samurai with spells or matrix attacks. My other main focus was on all the sensory bioware, so I got all five senses sharpened to amazing degree, so I can bloodhound people even through the big city...

@Bean: Thanks to a comment from someone I am actually heavily debating taking the hit to Edge to switch from Human to Elf which would actually bump me to being much closer to that. Not socially competent per say but socially passable for the most part.

@Chromium: Avoiding the NAN for my character. I am a Canadian in IRL and the amount I know and deal with Native stuff puts playing the character just on the edge of comfort. No problems with other people doing it just a bit odd for me personally.

@The Big D: It’s less about money and more about establishing a few connections in the group. I worked out a nominal working relationship with one person. A more personal one with a roommate would give me another. Gives me a reasonable way to jump into the game I someone calls me up rather than just showing up at a job.

@Chromium: I could picture the pair of Samurai under one roof would wind up being the like Tony Randall and Jack Klugman in the Odd Couple. It’ll be amusing as all heck!

--- HuBlogger | 06/04/2076, 19:22 EST

OOC: By the time Knight Errant cordoned off MIT&T and Fenway park, millions of people were watching HuBlogger's stream.  Through a series of aerial drones, the dragon was tracked as far north as Salem before it was lost to sight.

NeoNET is forced to evacuate Tower 4, and has been using mages and spirits to keep the tower from collapsing.  An unidentified police spokesperson has stated that the tower is likely to be brought down come morning.

No word has been said of the thousands of baseball fans stuck inside the stadium, and there are loud calls from the public to allow the people out.  Knight Errant has so far refused such calls, and the mayor has stated that a news conference would be held in the morning of the fifth.

I am sorry to be a pain, but in the 'Current Events' thread, could we please have a basic timeline for Recent Boston?
(for those of us who do not know the scenario)

- When (how long ago) and Why (at least the officials/media reasons) was Boston 'Locked Down'?
- When (how long ago) did this dragon break free of MIT+T?
- What is Fenway Park?  is it the baseball stadium you later mention?
- What and Where is NeoNET Tower 4?
- ... and what status are those two in now?  How did the two scenes play out?
- Is Knight Errant the primary Law Enforcement here in Boston?

Re: OOC Thread #2
Knight Errant has the police force contract (currently) for Boston.

Fenway Park is a baseball park, and it is currently in shambles, having had a large dragon crash land into it.  It's under guard by Knight Errant and Ares security.

NeoNET's corporate structure is a business park with several towers.  #4 houses the main matrix connections for Boston, and a good portion of the North American eastern seaboard.  While the tower was badly damaged, the important bits are all in the sub-basements.  It's currently under a severe security cordon.  The NeoNet complex is downtown Boston.

The dragon broke free approximately 2 weeks ago.  Approximately, for while its crashing into Fenway, and attack on NeoNET, are known qualities, there's a possibility the dragon was freed before then.  Two weeks is the closest one can get.

The lockdown is officially to calm the city after the events of the dragon's escape and attack.  There were riots by the local homeless population, and rumours of a virus spreading lend some credence to the rumours that the lockdown is not going to be temporary.

SR: Anarchy was a hot mess. My tabletop group tried it for an arc--it wanted to be a storytelling game, but those mechanics seemed tacked on. The "shadow amps" flattened things even worse than 4e D&D flattened class differences. My feelings on SR6 are best described as "apathy."

My friends got me the “Shadowrun: No Future” book as a thank you gift for house sitting for him and his wife. I just powered through it. It’s fairly “meh” all told. Plenty of setting info if you wanted to flesh out the worlds view of art and culture, but they kind of soft foot around the darker stuff that gives you stuff to work with. Some of the stuff they came up with for art and music in Shadowrun is just weird, and not like workable weird, just weird to even conceive of. Also half the art and illustrations is reused.

Overall you can ignore No Future unless you enjoy the books for Lore reads. Figured I would review/warn you guys about it if you were considering it.

That said one piece of gear in there has inspired me to write up a full run for our sit down “GM tag-in” game. So I guess it wasn’t 100% wasted.

Also, quick IC question before I grab a sniper rifle does anyone else have the ability/interest in playing an overwatch/sniper type for this mission?

I am more than able to go in door to door, was the reason Chromium was built the way he was, but this is a mission where a good sniper might be worth more to take out targets of opportunity who are smoking and get us in easy?

Sleight can do Overwatch, but can't effectively see through walls to cast Stunbolt and Lightning Ball on bad guys.

Another option I just thought of would be to use Control Thought on Slim and give him instructions on what to do, then the guy with Slim out on a smoke break and just have him get real interested in the wall. Then have Sleight cast Flight and Imp Invisibility on Slim and have Slim fly away to the previously instructed location.

Yeah, a lot Sleight specific, but if everybody else is on back up, that could be Plan A. Plan B is take down the bad guys with stun stuff and then grab Slim, etc, etc.

Well, I'll give you folks a bit to hash it out in OOC or IC. :)

You could probably use at least part of Sleight's plan.  Wait for the two to come out to smoke, make the one guy face the wall, or at least look away.  Then you don't have to shock him, makes less noise, grab Slim, Iris has a plan to get in and out with a good chance of not being spotted.  Only random element then is what do the other wonks in the house do.  Could be the other part of your plan deals with them in some way so that they don't get to chase you.

I am not invested in any single idea at this point, just pointing out a possibility.

If we can figure out where the other two known associates are located during the 'smoke breaks' then we can target them all at the same time. Taking them all down in a single surprise attack that is relatively silent would be optimal.

Re: OOC Thread #2
I eventually want to get some flying drones myself, but alas don't have any yet. Had a little too much fun messing around with Kill Code customization...

That being said, I've been a bit silent and distracted by RL the past 7 days or so with being sick and stuff, but I'm still around and pushing to get myself active again. I can support with decking and even B&E stuff. No slouch with automatics either.
I've got some solid tech I'm carrying around, so even if they manage to geek the over-eager decker you guys are able to pick up the stuff and get parts of my job done anyway. I've got jammers, bug scanners, tag erasers, miniwelder, autopicker, etc. Even a fun little Faceless device. Little things that'll help make things go a bit smoother.

Like I mentioned in game thread, even if we've just got a couple hours for set-up IG and there's room in the truck I can drop into VR and hit it from the Matrix side. Probably a little better in this scenario just in case I spook them. Hitting an unsuspecting place and making a little noise, but not hitting it for the job for a day or two can usually be fine. Hitting kidnappers while they're waiting out a flood would probably be a little more volatile. Even if we run out of room in the truck, might be able to get a place nearby where I can lay it out for a bit then head out on my own after the grab is done. Just not 100% ideal, because I am a slouch for driving with a measly 4 dice :)

Re: OOC Thread #2
So since its been quiet a few days now, I think i'll suggest we move the game forward a bit, or at least start on a basic outline of plan.

I am not 100% sure on each capabilities, but i think i have you mostly figured out SO I suggest

A) Physical Ground Surveilence -Myself, Chromium, Oberon and Bean. (possibly Iris rigging)
B) Astral Surveilence - Sleight, Keys.
C) Matrix/ Rigger support - Iris and Rasputin, (I think your both riggers though??)

We need to get eyes on Slim and figure out the lay out of surrounding buildings. Get way routes ( If not into the lake, I do like that idea).

I know we all have our own ideas and they all could work we just need to DO one.. and have a back up.

I'm not even sure if we agreed on a Pay for the job yet..

So, we are walking out of the General's meet with 5,500Y each, right.

We're in no rush, so buying gear (and summoning back up) won't be an issue ... and we're gearing up for some recon, yes?

Yepyep. They just called it the 'modern' interface on the homepage. Probably because it's the first time they're updating the layout in ages. And they're pretty much re-writing the entire framework it seems. I think I'm going to keep using it.

Changing the color scheme will be a must, and there are so many you can change. I look forward to see how it develops.

Just to make it really clear OOC: Bean has info on the neighborhood that will get us close to the house with minimal risk of exposure, including to "neutral" parties that might be in the area. It's likely to be her primary contribution this go-round. :P

She'd have fed that to folk's commlinks as needed.

I really don't have any specific information to share, guys. That's no reasonable excuse for my silence (doctors and students are better for that, as far as it goes), but... basically I have some vaguely defined way to get us physically close to the house without being exposed. That's it. Doesn't cover Matrix or Astral stuff, though.

Re: OOC Thread #2
And I'm sorry for that. (And also sorry that I didn't get that more explicit apology into the previous post, for what it's worth).

Based on log-ins, we're looking at the following people still active:
Bean (probably ;) )
Bester
Chromium
Iris
Keys
Oberon (probably)
Rasputin
Sleight

That's a pretty reasonably sized team.

How do we want to handle planning, though? This is where SR and investigative games always seem to die online, because it gets too easy to just wait for somebody else, and delays push the problem farther and farther out of mind.

Keys has done some astral surveillance (and so has Sleight), and Chromium at least a bit of grounds surveillance. That leaves a Matrix sweep, and then we go in.

Do we want to run with the smash-and-grab during a cigarette break? It's efficient, uncomplicated, and would get us moving again.

Re: OOC Thread #2
I think if the GM could make things move forward by giving feedback to those that have already done some 'legwork'. Matrix and Astral stuff happens much faster than actually walking around, as it were, but often facilitates the actual physical legwork by showing us where our gaps are and letting the matrix/astral people communicate to the rest of the team to make decisions on.

Once the GM gets back to us, we 'plan' over the radio, get the special ammo people, and then go for it when the time is right.

Re: OOC Thread #2
Been a bit busy with work and family stuff the last several days. I had hoped last night to put together a 'plan'....HAH! I would say I could get it done this weekend, but I know that is not going to happen either.

I think we need Big D to let Keys and Sleight (and anybody else doing leg work) the final pieces of information. Then we need Keys to tell us if he can Banish the Earth Elemental in the back yard. Sleight can help, but Sleight doesn't as big a dice pool as Keys...but some.

Once we decide how we want to go at them...cause I think the 3 regular guys are in excess to the mage whom has not poked his head out yet.

Any other suggestions?

Re: OOC Thread #2
Just so the other players know, summoning doesn't take much time. Binding takes a lot of time (1 hour per force point or 6 hours in this case) and a lot of resources that neither mage has on them. Carrying around 300 rocks, chunks of glass, moss, etc for a Lv6 spirit binding is impractical.

Sleight gave the 10 drams worth of reagents to Keys to help him banish the elemental if he wanted it or summon a big spirit for the day without taking physical damage.

He has more 40 more drams on him.
